I always give this book to any friend who has had bad news like a diabetes diagnosis. The book is so funny and encouraging, and gives you such a feeling of buoyant hope -- a determination to use your diagnosis make your life even better and richer than it might have been. June, one of the authors, has been a healthy (!) active person --travelling, skiing, running a successful business, writing marvelous books -- all in the several decades since she first started squirting insulin. She makes you see how you can, too.

This book is an absolute "must have" for anyone interested in natural medicines. It is comprehensive and the studies have been presented in a fair, unbiased way. I believe anyone who reads this book and carefully reviews each study will one day have the opportunity to save lives with this information. I am Native American, we have used this medicine forever, it works.

Story of success and courage

Reviewed by Debra Gaynor for Reader Views (11/06)

James Quander was a trailblazer. He was an African American living in a society that had not yet accepted equality of all. He was a man with diabetes at a time when it was considered a disability and something that should be hidden.

After a severe insulin reaction, Rohulamin encouraged his dad to write his courageous story. Rohulamin felt that reading about James' struggle with juvenile diabetes could encourage millions of others. Others needed to know that you can live successfully with this ailment. Together James and Rohulamin wrote this book.

James was born in 1918 in Washington, D.C. He was officially diagnosed with diabetes.
Bedwetting had become a problem. On one particular Easter Sunday James woke up tired and grouchy. He wasn't feeling well and was barely dragging along. "I collapsed onto one of the two forest green park benches that we always sat on in the front yard in the evenings. I just could not move and relished the fact that I was home... at least almost in my own room, in my own bed." When his father rushed to see if he was ok, "I answered, "Papa, Papa come get me. I'm too weak to get up. I can hardly move. Come get me." James was too weak to walk. Dr. Wilder was called, he suspected Juvenile Diabetes. Dr. Wilder and James became a team working together to prevent the condition from getting worse. "Never once did Mama or Papa ever let on to me that they believed that I was not going to make it. Instead they decided that they would do everything within their human ability to provide me with a quality of life equal to that of my two brothers and three sisters."

James Quander shares his experiences with us, from being diabetic to playing basketball in high school, to his struggle with Scarlet Fever, to his academic achievements. I enjoyed reading Mr. Quander's story. It is one of success, and courage. The writing is superb; the cover introduces the book well. I highly recommend "The Quander Quality" to all who enjoy non-fiction, and to those who have diabetes or are parents of a diabetic.

The Quander Quality: The True Story Of A Black Trailblazing Diabetic co-authored by the father and son team of James W. Quander and Rohulamin Quander is the engaging biography of the late James W. Quander (1918-2004). Telling the intriguing story of Quander's diagnosis of diabetes shortly before his sixth birthday, and his dedicated and courageous pursuit to live a fulfilled and purposeful life, The Quander Quality is the inspirational and deeply personal history of how Quander eventually became on of the sixteen men ordained in the United States when the Permanent Diaconate was revived after an eight-hundred-year hiatus. An inspirational and engaging example of living and pursuing life to its greatest limits, The Quander Quality is very highly recommended as for all readers searching for a true life example of timely and enduring truths manifested in an ordinary human being with an extraordinary determination.

Hats off to Doris Cross! She's produced yet another spectacular cookbook! The recipes in this book are absolutely delicious, easy to prepare, and don't require bizarre ingredients. The taste is sensational; you think you're eating high-fat dishes when you aren't! The dishes are simple enough for everyday fare, yet elegant enough for a dinner party. Of the many cookbooks I've purchased since being diagnosed with diabetes, the ones by Doris Cross are far and away my favorites!!

Mama mia, is this good food!

Since I love Italian food and also need to eat in a balanced manner, I was delighted when I saw this cookbook in the library. It was everything I expected and more! The diabetic exchanges are clearly listed as well as the exact grams of carbo, protein, fat, sodium, and cholestrol. I tried two of the recipes, Garlic and Parmesan Chicken with Pasta, and Shrimp and Crab Stuffed Shells. The recipes were easy to follow and the taste was magnificent! I was amazed at the rich flavor and beauty of the dishes. I think this book would be helpful for anyone who follows the Zone Diet as well as diabetics.

god,i haven't read this book in forever but out of all the books i have read since this is the only one that still grabs me.i read this book, maybe 10 years back or so and i have since lost it,but it was one of the best, and most heartbreaking books i have ever read.it is also great to see that a little girl like shira can have so much courage.i would really like to read this book again but i haven't been able to find it anywhere.however,if anyone who is reading this does have the book,i strongly recommend that you read this.wow, imaging a lottle 10 year old actually sitting down to read a book.(over and over again,i might add.) but i did forget something.the courage and the heartache that that poor, beautiful little girl's family had.i wish i could find that book again. oh,did i mention that most of the book was actually shira writing it? yes, it was parts of her actual diary that she wrote as she was going through this whole ordeal.it's a beautiful compilation of a little girl's life and death. i strongly recommend if anyone has this book to read it.if anyone has the book i would really like to have it. please e-mail me and let me know.thank you very much

I had gestational diabetes and needed a cookbook that would meet my dietary needs. I bought my copy from a bookstore and loved the recipes so much I bought this one for my sister-in-law since we're trying to eat healthy together. I have continued to use it after my pregnancies and love the simplicity of the dishes. They are easy to make, tasty, and have all the nutrition facts for each recipe. I especially love the Mexican-style Turkey Soup and the Cocoa Snickerdoodles!

Really great book!

This cookbook has incredible mouth-watering photos of the food which I love in a cookbook. It has easy to make recipes that actually taste great too. I liked the variety of the food in both ethnicity and flavor. It also has a good mix of comfort food and gourmet. It covers breakfasts to dinners, slow cook to instant - its all there. Enjoy.

Very Practical Guideline

Review Date: 2003-11-18
This excellent book provides very practical guideline to insulin pumping and covers all the aspects of pumping: from the best pump wearing to the complex tinny tuning of insulin regime. Usually such kind of books contains two main parts: the first one explains whom and why need the pump, while the second part retell user guide for a pump. The reviewing book is favorably different by substance. It bases on the modern scientific research published. I am longstanding diabetic and diabetic reader, but I discovered some new facts about the diabetes, its complications, and insulin therapy. My recommendation is: don't delay, - buy and study this book!

SMART PUMPING by Howard Wolpert is an excellent resource for those using an insulin pump or considering one.

It is less complex that PUMPING INSULIN and does not cover the new technologies. It is probably due for an update, but the information on nutrition and the pump is quite unique.

It offers ways to fine tune your insulin, but was written before some of the smart pumps were on the market. For a basic guide to fine tuning your pump, I highly recommend this book.

Great book! I purchased this book because I have a student who was recently diagnosed with diabetes. I wanted the class to understand what their classmate was going through and to answer any questions they may have. I truly believe that educating children on issue such as this will help enhance their lives as well as the child who is experiencing it first hand. Thanks Kim, for a wonderful book for all ages!!

A Great Book to Send to School!

My daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes three years ago. Every year since, I've asked her teachers to let her read this book to the class at the beginning of the year. This is a great tool for the other children to understand what Diabetes is, why my daughter gets special snacks at special times, but most importantly it lets them know that she is just like every other kid. Having Diabetes is hard enough on children without the added stress it can cause at school. I encourage all parents who are in my position to make this book a part of your school education efforts. It shouldn't replace the training materials and meetings, but addresses the often overlooked element of how to help the child with Diabetes fit into the classroom.
