This is an excellent book for children who are diagnosed with Type I diabetes. It also gives parents a tool to help the diabetic child understand that they aren't so different and they can enjoy a long, happy and normal life if they take care of themselves.

Anyone who reads this book is bound to find meaningful information that can help. This is a painstaking work that shows the dedication of the author to make a difference not only among those who are directly affected by diabetic condition but those who care for them. It provides practical pointers for a better quality of life. This is definitely a winner. I strongly recommend it to all. Because if you do not have diabetic, you may know someone who is, and the changes recommended are beneficial to all. As a Physician, I want to congratulate the author for a great job.

My spouse is both diabetic and has a heart ailment. After just spending 8 days in the hospital with pneumonia, we are going to make some changes. A friend had loaned me her copy of this book while I was waiting for doctors, tests and other stuff in the hospital. I just bought my own because I wanted to sticky note and highlight half of this book. The expertise and experience this author shares brings it all into focus. When the dieticians and doctors were talking to me, I heard "Blah, Blah, Blah", but reading this fantastic book makes it all make great sense. Plus, not only will it help us lead a healthier life, I learned a lot about my own habits and how they can kill me. Thanks for this book --

The right foods, in the right amounts, with the right kind of preparation is a key element in the treatment and control of diabetes. In Light & Easy Diabetes Cuisine, culinary expert Betty Marks (herself an insulin dependent diabetic for 26 years) has compiled a superb collection of easy-to-make, diabetic diet appropriate, thoroughly delicious dishes that are especially appropriate for people with little or no time available for meal preparation. From Cucumber Buttermilk Soup (cooking time: 0, preparation time: 10 minutes); Crabmeat Salad (cooking time: 0, preparation time: 15 minutes); and Fusili with Sun-Dried Tomatoes (cooking time: 15 minutes, preparation time: 15 minutes); to Almond Rice (cooking time: 15 minutes, preparation time: 5 minutes); Sesame Bread (cooking time: 20 minutes, preparation time: 10 minutes); and Coffee Cream Pudding (cooking time: 0 minutes, preparation time: 25 minutes), Light & Easy Diabetes Cuisine is a welcome and ardently recommended addition to any diabetes sensitive cookbook collection.

but unfortunately, sometimes you have to learn about things you'd rather not. And when my good friend nuked his liver with alcohol and tylenol and nearly died, I had to find out what was up, because the staff at the hospital was really scaring me. This book, written in very clearly and from a very optimistic point of view, definitely answered most of my questions, and I am even a little more hopeful than I was when I began it. If you know anyone who drinks heavily OR already has liver disease, it's the book to read or share with them.

I just recently finished reading this new book called "Living Life With Diabetes", by John Keeler. What an amazing book he wrote. My husband is a diabetic and afterreading this I understand so much more about him. I was brought into his world for just bit, but enough that I learned so much. I highly reccommend this book for anyone who is a diabetic, is married to a diabetic, have children who are diabetic or even if you just know anyone who does. Thank you John and Good Luck.

An excellent book which gives insight into the life of a person with diabetes. It is easy to understand both for people with and without diabetes. The book gives us Johns first hand experiences of coping with the day to day challenges of having diabetes. It is an accurate, well written, down-to-earth, humourous story. The book shows us that diabetes can never be a restriction for living life to the best. One of my first impressions when reading this book was: "Wow, I'm so glad I'm not the only one who feels that way". It contains a lot of practical tips and gives the reader reassurance, hope and a sense of happiness. Instead if asking "why me?" we end up asking ourselves "why not me?".
I would even recommend this book to members of the medical profession who work closely with people who have diabetes.

A good book, but...

It's nice to see a book with more up-to-date information about diabetes, since most books like this seem to have been written in the '80s. Most of the information in the book is accurate, except for one recurring problem. The numbers given for Cassie's blood sugar, even when she says it's under good control, are consistently higher than they should be. She says everything is okay when her sugar was over 200, and she says that it should normally be between 100-150.
In actuality, blood sugar should be between 90-120. While 150 is acceptable, frequently being in that range would signal poor control. Anything over 180 is considered too high.
It's a minor problem, and it's true that Cassie doesn't have the best control, but the range of 'good control' at least should be corrected in a future version. Even though it's not majorly important to the story line, it is a bit misleading, especially if someone were to read this book for information about diabetes.
I give the book five stars because, other than that one problem, it is well written and fairly realistic, and all the other medical information is basically correct.

This book is an amazing story. It is about a 15 year old girl who has diabetes. After ending up in the hospital for writing false glucose numbers her parents baby her and treat her like she is little. She decided to work at a sleep-a-way camp for diebetic children where she meets this really cute guy, Jason. The only thing with Camp Caribou is that she is the only counselor who has diebetes and she intends to keep it a secret until her secret is revealed. All of ehr friends and Jason feel diapointed that she didn't trust them... If you like this book read- WHY ME? THE COURAGE TO LIVE, also by Debroah Kent.

Obviously, great care was taken in the development of the characters in this story. This is evident in how the reader is drawn into the story. It is an inspirational and hopeful story involving a person who handles not one but two chronic illnesses and leads a full life while encountering numerous obstacles. These obstacles are human; financial; family; federal court; big corrupt manufacturing companies; her career; while coping beautifully with her medical obstacles her multiple sclerosis and diabetes. There is suspense, love, family devotion and humor. The references and resources are enlightening. The main character, Selma, is an inspiration on how to live a full life. Her illnesses are not the center of her world, but a part of it she copes with. Great reading, a novel I applaud. Well done!

The detailed descriptions of symptoms covering diabetes and MS will leave any healthy person finally understanding what life can entail with these illnesses. I'd challenge anyone to read it, and not be grateful for their own health. For a novice author, this is an excellent read. An abundance of resources and references are included. I give it five stars.

No Waisted Words, Just Understanding

I want to recommend this book to anyone who has diabetes or is involved with someone who has it for the very simple reason that it makes understanding the disease and what to do about it something that everyone can read.

The no-nonsense approach spells out just what is going on, why it is happening and how you can easily take back control of your life and your health. The writing of the book takes the guess work out of understanding where other books I've read seem to go to deeply into the science of the problems without relating them to everyday experience.

If you are in this situation and you need someone to talk plainly to you about it, give this book a try. Ithink you will be glad you did.

Great Recipes even if you're not a Diabetic!

This cookbook is printed in black and white, there are no pictures and the pages are a matte finish. So if you're cooking and you splatter something on them...it's there to stay. Perhaps that's how you know which recipes to make again, LOL.

I really liked that each recipe had all the nutrition information. There are calorie counts, food exchanges, fat, carb and protein grams, etc. This cookbook is just not for diabetics. It's for anyone who wants good recipes and tasty dishes. I really liked the Italian Peasant Salad. I do not have diabetes, nobody in the family does...I just like good cookbooks and making new dishes. This is one for the record book.

The Toasted Almond Chicken Salad I am making using the left-over turkey from Thanksgiving instead. The cookbook also has a month of meals, it includes breakfast, lunch and dinner. With all the recipes included and which pages they can be found. What an awesome idea, I wonder why more cookbooks don't incorporate these little extras?

The chapters are divided into breakfast, lunch, dinners and speed meals. There are no dessert recipes for the obvious reason. And I won't make broccoli now without using oil infused with saffron. That was just delicious. All the food ingredients call for fresh, bottled sauces, bottled salad dressings, dried or fresh herbs. Basically items that can be purchased at a regular grocery store. Gotta appreciate that.

You won't be disappointed in this cookbook especially if you're not a diabetic. You definitely will not find flavorless food in this cookbook. Buy!

Being diagnosed with diabetes does not mean being condemned to a lifetime of bland foods and tasteless menus. Now in an expanded and updated second edition, "Mix 'n' Match Meals In Minutes For People With Diabetes" by Linda Gassenheimer (a syndicated journalist, food expert, and the author of twelve cookbooks) has compiled a selection of quick and easy dishes appropriate for breakfast, lunch or dinner and which can be switched around in a 'mix and match' strategy for menu planning and fine dining. Each recipes is provided with a 'Shopping List' of ingredients required, cooking instructions, and 'Helpful Hints'. This new edition features a section of 'speed meals' that can be prepared quickly, easily, and still produce healthy, hearty, tasty dishes that will please any palate, satisfy any appetite, and conform to the dietary requirement of diabetics. The sample menus provided offer dishes that range from Grilled Turkey Sausage with Mustard and Sweet Pickle Relish; Spicy Grilled Cheese and Tomato Sandwich with Oatmeal; and Chinese Chicken with Cashew Nuts; to Italian Roast Pork; Sauteed Scallops with Saffron Vegetable Pilaf and Mocha Froth; and a Ham, Mushroom, and Onion Pizza with Spinach Salad. Thoroughly kitchen cook friendly, "Mix 'n' Match Meals In Minutes For People With Diabetes" is an absolute must for the kitchen cookbook collection of anyone having to prepare meals with respect to diabetic diners that will appeal to all the other members sitting down to eat as well.

I ordered the book Outsmarting Diabetes because I have been diagnosed as being "borderline diabetic" so I wanted to know how to deal with my condition. The book points out all the good change of habits that lead to managing the condition such as loosing weight, exercise and diet.
It is a good reference book so I can maintain a healthy lifestyle to help me deal with my health problem. I found the book very helpful and informative.

A little bit of valuable knowledge.

Know someone with diabetes? Have it yourself?

This is a book that fills in some blanks. Some of this information is not told by your doctor, some is from Europe. All is relevant to you.

Will it save your life? I honestly don't know. But some of the information, such as taking 300mg of AlphaLipoic Acid, twice a day, to reduce the pain of neuropathy -- works. Tried it, amazed at the results.

Passed it onto several doctors and other diabetics. It's that good.
