I highly recommend this book for everyone who has, or cares about someone who has diabetes. If you ever heard, "test this, restrict that, and by the way, you'll probably end up going blind anyway" and then thought "Why should I?" this is a great eye-opener. This book offers real-life feelings and experiences of other DM-ers (both types) in support of the idea that major adjustments are being/have been required in your life, and there are emotional side-effects of those changes that most of our doctors are not trained to deal with. It has some good tips, but more importantly, helps you ask the question: exactly how is this going to effect my self-image? Great section about thinking of yourself as "good or bad" based on choices that most make without a second thought. (i.e. should I go for a run?) There are also good chapters on how parents feel when a child is diagnosed, teenagers and their control issues, and sex. I especially recommend this book for anyone with diabetes experiencing depression, whether recently diagnosed or going on the 40th anniversary. One drawback - the book is a bit old, so references to the med stuff is dated

This book was so informative. It detail what the effects of diabetes are and how to adapt your life so that this very treatable disease will not overtake you. The writer of this book are the leading expert for Harvard Medical school and a hsuband of a diabetic.

They discuss diet, what to expect from doctor, monitors, medication, diet, complications and what to expect if you do and don't take care of yourself.

I suggest this book for anyone who deals with diabetes on a regular basis or wants to find out more. This book si great for both type I and Type II diabetics.

Ignorance of diabetes is not bliss, this book can scare you at first if you are just dignosed, but the information in this book will help you find the courage to find a good doctor ! and control this disease.

This is the first book on diabetes I have read since I was diginosed with diabetes. It is a great reference book with a philosphy that diabetes is to be controled by you and not you by it. It covers all types of diabetes, treatment, insulin, diet, exercise, complication, pregnecy, and how to deal with your new cronic disease so that one can live a full life.

I recomend this book for all diabetics because of the source, the ease of understanding, and the professionalism of its approach as well as it has tons of useful information. E. J. Boehm

Diabetes is a complicated disease. I know. I have it, and I've tried to explain it to people (no, I didn't get it from eating too much sugar). This book gives an easy-to-understand explanation about diabetes and its treatment--and the illustrations are great. I'm giving copies to my friends.

I Bought One For My Dad

We used to think when his morning sugar was in the 140s that he was controlled. Thanks to the Diabetic Diary we now know that was too high. We also found out that measuring his blood sugars only once a day wasn't enough. The Diabetic Diary not only gives him a place to record his blood sugars and other laboratory tests, it tells him what the goals of his therapy should be. The single page explanations are nice and informative without unnecessary information that might confuse him. Now we know what to get Dad for Christmas!

Excellent book! Diabetes runs in my family and I bought copies for those that have it. It easy to use and well organized. Even our doctors were impressed because it helps remind them of what testing should be done when. If you're diabetic then you deserve the most modern medical care and this book helps you get it!

Dr. Lodewick puts it all in perspective. He gives you hope that you can control your diabetes and therefore significantly reduce the damage that the disease does. I followed up with an appointment with Dr. Lodewick. He is competent, straight forward and impathetic. Recommended reading for all diabetics.

Awesome handbook!
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 1999-12-30
I am a third year medical student. This handbook takes a very broad and complicated disease, and makes it manageable to the diabetic patient. I have seen many diabetics take better control of their disease using the easy to use charts and information. This handbook proves that diabetes need not be intimidating to those who are diagnosed with it. The handbook makes it very easy to follow the care that is being given, as well as the care that should be given.

This is an exceptional book and tool for diabetics !

Finally, someone has written a self-help book for diabetics. The Diabetic Patient's Handbook allows each doctor and patient to know where and what should be done to benefit the patient. Knowledge is power. The handbook allows each individual to return to the doctors office with information to provide a more complete method of treatment and health care.

The book is the right size to carry in your shirt pocket or purse. It could also be taken to other Physcians and reviewed as an overall plan of treatment.

I Strongly recommend this book! It has the potential to help you save your own life and will provide you with the knowledge necessary to discuss your methods of treatment for your own well being.

I FOUND THIS BOOK TO BE EXCELLENT FOR THE JUST INFORMED DIABETIC WOMAN. SO MANY DOCTORS JUST TELL YOU THE NEWS, HAND YOU A PRESCRIPTION AND YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN. I HAVE RECOMMENDED THIS BOOK TO MY PHARMACY AND HEALTH FOOD STORE, BOTH WHO SAY NEWLY INFORMED DIABETICS COME IN AND SAY THEY HAVEN'T A CLUE OF WHAT TO DO NOW.

Informative and Easy to Read

June Biermann and Barbara Toohey team up with Dr. Lois Jovanovic-Peterson to create the best question and answer book for the diabetic female. The book is divided into three stages of life. Each stage is categorized into developments common with the age group. There is even a special chapter about diabetes and pregnancy in the second life stage. Complications are discussed, but not emphasized. Living life to the fullest is the goal. Type 2 diabetes is also discussed briefly. The tone of the book is lighthearted and often funny. There are several antecdotes about life with diabetes and how to answer some of the questions a person is asked by well meaning friends or family. This book is a must for both the diabetic patient and her loved ones.

It works

I have used Dr. Ingrams products for 2 years now and I still have my liver, unlike "DRUGS" that have been know to cause death in some cases and other complications. Just look at your television and watch the "drug" commercials and listen to the side effects.
Anyone who says that Dr. Ingrams products are not working for them then they must be doing something wrong.

I had a serious toe nail infection went to a drug store and the druggist said i would need a doctors note to get a product called lamisil a drug that she said would destroy my liver if i were to use it. She then whispered to me to go to a health food store and see what they have. I did and now no toenail fungus. Using the oil of oregano and oragamax.

It works and works well.

Everyone with diabetes should read this!

there wouldnt be as much typeII diabetes.

The recipes comprising the Easy Diabetic Meals provide easy-to-follow directions and ingredient amounts for both 2 and 4 servings, feature easily-located and common ingredients, and lack the complexity of some diabetic cookbooks which require long preparation times. The result is a set of complete 2-week menus for three different calorie levels and meals which embrace the concept of appeal for the entire family, diabetic or not.

Fabulous book! The menus are easy, quick, and tasty. Being a single person, I am too tired to cook when I get home. This book has help me change my bad habits. Like anything, once it becomes your routine, life is simple. The only thing I would change is the title. I would call it Easy Healthy Meals For 2 or 4 Servings. I'm not even a diabetic. My eating habits have improved and I am losing weight without dieting. Don't hesitate to purchase it.

Are you getting the right "Exchanges for All Occasions?"
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2004-04-24
"Exchanges for All Occasions" by Marion Franz has been through 5 "editions" since 1983. Although these books share the same title, they have DIFFERENT SUBTITLES, different ISBN numbers, and are very different books.

The history is a little fuzzy, but the earliest editions (C1983, 1986, 1987)were called "Exchanges for All Occasions" and "Exchanges for All Occasions: Meeting the Challenge of Diabetes." They were published by different publishers and their editions and revisions overlapped. The 3rd book was titled, "Exchanges for All Occasions: How to Use the Exchange System for Healthy and Creative Food Choices-3rd Edition," and was published in 1993.

The special one is the 4th edition, titled: "Exchanges for All Occasions: Your Guide to Choosing Healthy Foods Anytime Anywhere-4th Edition." C1997, ISBN 1885115350. This book is very, very good, and also very, very rare. When it can be found, it goes for about $40.00. It is a terrific book and its exchange lists include "carb-counting," WHICH THE PREVIOUS EDITIONS DO NOT, along with extensive exchange lists and other information about meal planning, carb-counting your own recipes, and dining out. It has a salmon cover and is a 5.5" x 8.5" trade paperback. If it can be found, it is very expensive. I have one and probably wouldn't part with it for any amount of money (within reason).

There is also a great little pocket guide, that was published in 2000. It has the identical salmon-colored cover, but it is a tiny book and is called "Exchanges for All Occasions: Pocket Guide to Healthy Food Choices Anytime, Anywhere"(notice the different subtitle). This little guide, C2000, ISBN 1885115563, is the book that all the Amazon reviews, for all editions, are referring to. Notice the reviews say it is a very handy size. It has the same exchange lists, including carb counting, as the 1997 book, but none of the other information. It is a very handy pocket book with good exchange lists for everything, including ethnic restaurant foods.

All of the different Amazon sale pages for the different editions are mixed up, and they mostly show the cover of the 4th edition and the good reviews of the pocket edition.

Because the 1997 book is so valuable and so good, you often will find the 3 older editions (1983-1993)listed under the 4th edition's ISBN for a high price, or even the Pocket Guide's ISBN for a moderately high price. The earlier 3 editions of "Exchanges for All Occasions," which were published in the 1980's, do not have carb-counting and do not have the salmon-colored cover that is shown on all product pages for these books (further adding to the confusion). These old editions are readily available on Amazon at a very cheap price, and sometimes masquarade as the 4th edition at a high price. Buyer beware.

Marion Franz, makes the unknown possible. Anyone with diabetes knows what it means to be restrict ed. This book, is a guide to those who chose to live their lives as normal as possible. As anyone who has a disease or has dieted, restrict ing one self too much, can lead to indulgence. Marion Franz gives us the knowledge, to use as a tool, in planning for those special occasions yet, remaining in diabetic tight control. Thank you, for giving me, more freedom of choice!
