I had to read this book 3 times as there is so much information to digest. Mr Deddo has done a fantastic job of putting all of the information in one place. I have been trying to sort through the data for over 15 years and make some sense out of our food chain and the impact on the health of all America. We are all at risk because of food being processed and centralized by large corporations that worry about shelf life and return for the stock holders. Connecting The Dots fills in all of the missing peaces and provides a way to help every one sort out the food chain in our world today....

This isn't a book about diabetes--this is a book about big business and its attempt to keep Americans in the dark.

The funny part is that the message that Mr. Deddo relates isn't some outlandish conspiracy theory; it is a fascinating series of studies and facts that when pieced together, paint a bleak picture of the health of Americans in the coming years.

Quoting numerous studies (each with detailed references), Mr. Deddo explores the factors in our society that have led to America's epidemic of obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease.

What has this book done for me? It has provided me with an education on the history of the American diet, marketing, and how far companies will go to sell products, regardless of their effect on the health of its consumers.

Armed with this knowledge, I have been able to do more than "manage" my high blood sugar. In as little as five weeks, by making informed decisions about what I eat, I have gained complete control of my blood sugar throughout the day, every day. As an added bonus, I've even lost some weight!

"Connecting the Dots" has helped me take control of my health and diminish my fears of facing a future of declining heath. The author isn't kidding when he states this book "may save your life!"

As both a physician and a history buff, I highly recommend this book. It is the first book of its type to incorporate fluidly the historical, socioeconimic, and medical perspective of diabetes. It includes fun facts for the trivia nut as well as well researched new treatment modalities. Diabetics and non-diabetics alike would benefit highly from this text. New York, NY

The text boxes Martha used were soooo helpful in helping me understand some of the things my doctors were telling me. She broke everything down so that I did not have any trouble understanding the complexity of this chronic illness. Her great looks give me the courage to take better care of my self and to know that a diagnosis of diabetes doesn't mean the "end of the world" - I wish I had had this book available years ago when I was first diagnosed. I recommend this book for ALL diabetics and their families.

I never knew diabetes could affect so many different things until I read this book. The author has simplified the "medical jargon" in a way that I can understand. And her way of sharing her own personal experiences, of different complications, from the first symptom to the present is awesome. I am so glad that a "patient" has finally written a book that I can relate to as a diabetic. I highly recommend this book for ALL diabetics...

I was told by my doctor that I am pre-diabetic and advised to try to lower my blood sugar by diet alone. All I knew, or thought I knew, was that I should give up sugar. Speaking with a nutritionist taught me that dealing with carbohydrates was the key and I needed help. The Diabetes Carbohydrate & Calorie Counter begins with a discussion of diabetes itself, how to count carbs, plan meals, deal with eating out, specific chapters on sugar, fiber, and the glycemic index, and references to internet sites where it is possible to learn more. How to use a carbohydrate counter is discussed and finally a lengthy list not only of just about every individual food but brand name items as well. This is a comprehensive wealth of information that I find extremely helpful to have on hand. With it, I have managed to lower my blood sugar from a high of 120 to 90 and I am very pleased. I no longer feel lost at sea in dealing with my diagnosis.

I realize I may be a bit prejudiced, being the niece of the author, but I found his book very easy to follow. It made a lot of sense for anyone who needs to cut down on their sugar and eat healthy. The recipes are very tasty and one can see how he changed the standard recipes into ones that a diabetic can safely eat. This can help anyone work with their own favorite recipes to transform them into diabetic friendly dishes. But most importantly he gives you a guide to how to control your blood sugar to enable you to not have to use as much, if any insulin. Many of my friends have this book and have raved about how great the recipes and guides are. Some were not diabetic but just wanted to eat healthy and lose weight. It makes a perfect gift for anyone who needs to watch their sugar.

I wish I would have been handed this book when I was diagnosed with diabetes. A lot of my frustrations were addressed, as well as healthy ideas for foods to eat.

All in all, I loved this book, and plan on passing it on to my friends and family so they can see what it's like on this end of the lancet.

As the book title states, this is an excellent resource .

This book has innovative recipies for the diabetic and her friends, that are clever and tasty enough to be, actually, something you would want to prepare and eat. Ms. Meirelles is a Diabetic Educator. She gives witty and very entertaining talks to diabetic support groups in and around Oregon. Her husband is her assistant. She educates the the non-diabetic away from many of the fears and false impressions about being diabetic. She shows us how to let the diabetic decide for herself what and when she can eat, because she is capable of doing so. We diabetics get weary of others getting on our case! Her recipie books are the result taste testing of the recipies by herself and her husband . She claims she publishes only the ones he likes!

Simply stated, every newly diagnosed diabetic should read and would substantially benefit from "The Diabetes Lifestyle Book" which is the collaborative work of clinical psychologist Jennifer A. Gregg (Assistant Professor, Department of Psychology, San Jose State University, San Jose, California), Glenn M. Callaghan (Professor of Psychology, San Jose State University), and Steven C. Hayes (University of Nevada Foundation Professor of Psychology, University of Nevada, Reno). The life-style changes that a diabetes diagnosis compels is often daunting and very difficult to sustain until and unless the diabetics are able to face their fears, voice their concerns, and maintain the changes in their diets, activity levels, and medical services required for a long and healthy life. The psychology, the motivation, the mental management techniques that must go along with changes in diet, medication schedules, and exercise programs are fundamental and precisely the 'how to' information and inspiration provided by "The Diabetes Lifestyle Book". No personal diabetes reading list or community library Health & Medicine reference collection should be without a copy of "The Diabetes Lifestyle Book".

This book has the potential to be a life changer for people with diabetes.
It teaches Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) principles to help people with diabetes come to grips with all the emotions involved with living with diabetes. There's also a lot of good information about the condition itself.

I highly recommend this book. I was already familiar with ACT before I read it, but the author does a fine job of teaching some basic ACT concepts. If you're a diabetic, please buy this book! Thank you.

Review Date: 2006-11-01
Authors Lea Ann Holzmeister and Patti B. Geil have complied a great reference book on nutrition as it relates to diabetes. It actually does take you from A to Z with information on everything that you might need to know a little about. It deals with alcohol, antioxidants, blood fats (Lipids), caffeine, calories, carbohydrates, insulin issues, cholesterol, glucose intolerance, kertones, preventing diabetes, metabolism, protein, and weight control as examples of how broad in scope the information is within these pages.

The book also gives you definitions of terms and organizations and treatments so you can also expand your over-all knowledge of how to deal with this disease. It is simply written and easy to understand. Nothing complicated about the book, which would make it a good book to gift to someone with diabetes. It is a quick education on this disease and a book that one should have in their medical reference library at home.

Five Stars are not enough!! I would like to give it Six Stars!!! An AWESOME Diabetes guide written by Stanley Mirsky, a medical doctor who is a well-known expert in the field, and co-author Joan Rattner Heilman, an experienced medical writer who makes the information so accessible. This is the best all-in-one source of information about this disease that I have read. This book belongs in many homes as a reference guide, for use as a "Diabetes Survival Guide" in homes where the disease is already present, and/or as a hedge against future possibilities.

No doubt about it, Diabetes (my caps for emphasis) is a scourge that is rapidly spreading across the USA and the world, killing and maiming in it's worst stages, and now reaching EPIDEMIC levels of more than 1 Million new cases each year. This disease, according to the author can be silent and insidious in it's early stages, catching many unaware of it's early presence. It has been tied to heart disease and stroke, along with the more well-known worst-case effects such as blindness and amputation. Striking children, teenagers, as well as older people, it has been tied to the rising tide of OBESITY and the SEDENTARY LIFESTYLE that is so prevalent in this age of excessive TV watching and hours of web surfing. If you fit in those categories, take note. Even if you think you don't, educate yourself just to be certain; If not through this book, search the web or other sources.

Finally in plain, very understandable words in 327 pages, the authors give us the most current information on this disease: what it is, how to detect it, the "Types" of diabetes, how to treat it, and very importantly, diet. Finally, 'hard', definitive numbers on the meaning of the results of the home blood glucose test meter results! The information of diet alone is invaluable and the surprising information in the "Diet for Dummies" area may surprise you as much as it did me. There is a list of what CAN and CANNOT ever be eaten. Gensing, marajuana, alcohol following exercise are not recommended for diabetics. This book cites definite life-style and habitual changes for some that will require discipline, more for some than others. Other important topics include the very important topic of exercise, insulin usage, and the other medications to keep it within controllable circumstances. ONE SIMPLE FASTING TEST can alert one to the possibility of diabetes or Pre-diabetes. The book cites the importance of detecting at the EARLY stage of "Pre-diabetes", where the disease can be aggressively attacked and managed or eradicated, and it cannot be over-emphasized!

This is a must-have reference guide that deserves the title "Survival Guide" and should be read by everyone. BUT this is just a guide. If you suspect Diabetes, the importance of seeing a MEDICAL DOCTOR and getting "hands on" treatment and remaining under their individualized care cannot be stressed enough. This book is an educational tool that can alert you to the early warning signs of Diabetes, assist in asking the right questions of a medical specialist if you have it, and guide you along the arc of treatment as a reference. My HIGHEST recommendation. Thank you Dr Mirsky and Ms Heilman! Five HEALTHIER Stars.

When first daignosed as a diabetic--about 3 years ago--I was at a loss for a good reference book. This book is great, it's straight forward, easy to understand and made learning about my disease simple. The book is written in an easy to understand question and answer format written by 3 experts, at least 2 of which are diabetics. I gave my original book away to a friend and now wish I had kept it. I learned so much from it, here I am ordering it again.
