I am an author and a poet and during a leisure trip to Las Vegas, Nevada with my family, we were able to obtain a front row seat at the Gladys Knight Show. It was awesome. What a display of great talent! Reading her book is fascinating. The historical perspective of her story is amazing. She states how she believes diabetes eventually crept upon her, and why. However, she has it under control. The ways in which she blends her songs into her treatment plan is humbling. For example, she uses the heading in one section of the book, "Neither One Of Us Wants to Say Goodbye to the Cheeseburger," where she discusses fatty foods and how to avoid fast foods. The pictures of her family are wonderful. Her philosophy of dealing with positive people, exercising daily, and burning calories is a formula for success. The final section of the book deals with a variety of mouth-watering dishes and recipes. They are all healthy with her special blend of spices, herbs, and juices, with a low fat touch. This is an easy and relaxing book to read. It's a great treat to and for lowering one's blood sugar and staying healthy. I highly recommend it!!!

Thank you Mrs. Knight

At Home With Gladys Knight is a wonderful, inspiring book. I bought this book for my parents who both have diabetes. After years of trying to get them to follow doctor recommended diets it is a relief to have a book that inspires my parents to not only care about their diet, but their physical fitness as well.
Mrs. Knight has created a quick and easy read that is full of motivation. This book gets 5 stars in the Murphy household.

Excellent resource for cuisines of Caribbean Latino population
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-29
Beyond Rice and Beans focuses on the Caribbean Latino population, composed of individuals from Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, and countries in Central and South America.
The book is written in both English and Spanish and begins with a simple overview of meal planning, discussing the differences between the types of carbohydrates and suggested serving sizes. Most helpful is a deeper explanation of the different cuisines of the Caribbean. Each section includes frequently asked questions, the most prominent foods included in each cuisine, and tips to reduce the fat and calories in many of the dishes highlighted.
The book also includes practice exercises to further understand the information discussed. The chapter titled "Putting Together Your Meal Plan" includes examples of how to individualize a meal plan by allowing the reader to participate in choosing what he or she already eats and incorporating it into a new meal plan.
The book is filled with helpful lists and tables of common foods eaten in the regions, utensils used in a Latin kitchen, and a practical list of what to do during holidays and special occasions. There are several chapters that described the fruits and vegetables of the Caribbean. The author describes the foods in great detail, giving pronunciation where applicable, providing some historical background about the food, and listing health tips as well as stories of when she lived in Cartagena, Columbia. The book includes a very personal touch, which makes it very easy to read, and the information is well researched and includes very practical information regarding the use of the foods and where to find them.
This is a wonderful book that provides excellent information regarding the many cuisines of the Caribbean Latino population for those who are already part of it or for those who want to learn more about it.

BEYOND RICE AND BEANS; THE CARIBBEAN LATINO GUIDE TO EATING HEALTHY WITH DIABETES comes in a unique English/Spanish format and assures its value will reach into the Spanish community as well. Here are food lists, exchange lists and sample meal plans geared to Latino culture and foods, offering shopping lists, health insights, and the basics. From how to read a nutrition label to balancing a meal, this isn't your usual recipe book - plenty of those elsewhere - but a fine diabetes management guide especially valuable to non-English speakers with different ethnic foods on board.

This book laid the foundations of integrative neuroscience independent of silly metaphors and reductionistic assumptions. This in turn led to a new understanding of the functioning of the brain by showing that integration is feasible. The contents dwell on the biophysical properties of neural networks. A highly recommended book!

The contents dwell on the biophysical properties (e.g. dendritic structure, ionic channels, and synaptic transmission) of neural networks. The overall motivation is to show that biophysics of computation is an inconsistent paradigm when dealing with neural networks by showing that integration from microscopic, mesoscopic and macroscopic levels is feasible. Therefore this book laid the foundations of integrative neuroscience independent of silly metaphors. Chapters 1-2 constitute an introduction to the subject and a historical survey of neuronal modeling, respectively. Chapters 3-5 encompass the cellular level with an emphasis on nonsynaptic transmission, and computational models of single neurons from the retina and amygdala. Chapters 6-7 characterize the physico-chemical mechanisms underlying synaptic plasticity in biochemical networks and synaptic transmission in axonal networks. Chapters 8-10 form the hard core of basic theory of small-scale biophysical neural networks.Chapters 11-12 deal with mesoscopic theories of hippocampal neural networks. Chapter 15 serves as an advanced overview of the numerical methods in neural modeling of networks.A number of problems are included at the end of each chapter to give a more in-depth appraisal of the contents, and each chapter ends with some predictions in relation to future developments. A highly recommemded book!

Ms. Stern has written a beautiful book explaining the essence of diabetes to a child. The book is enhanced by Ms. Orland's illustrations. I have had diabetic friends read this book, and they all tell me they approve of it greatly. This is a disease that I had never heard of until I was twelve, and did not really understand until I was in high school. I wish this book had been around a few decades earlier.

Informative for adults, too!

It is ironic that I never really understood the complexities of diabeties until I read this book. Written simply for children and bypassing extraneous technical language, "Can Mom Have a Piece of My Birthday Cake?" is actually a wonderful "Cliff Notes" of sorts, for adults who want to acquire a basic but not oversimplified grasp of the condition. The book gives an intelligent but easily understood explanation of the physiology and symptoms of the condition, and also provides a window into the practical concerns of a person with diabetes. (The
activities at the end are a great reinforcement for kids!) I recommend this book for children, and also for any adult who would like a quick and practical overview of the disease.

When Donna Kay was diagnosed with Typ 2 Diabetes at the age of 35, she could not find an upbeat book that would help her deal with her condition emotionally as well as medically. Reading the literature extensively, conversing with healthcare professional, and having no family history of diabetes, Donna Kay (with the help of Maribeth Stephen, an experienced healthcare writer) decided to write that missing book for the benefit of others who, like her, would find themselves unexpectedly having to deal with Type 2 Diabetes and all of the life-changing consequences of that diagnosis. The result is "The Complete Diabetes Lifestyle", a work of humor, practical advice, mind-body wisdom, and motivational strategies for dealing with diabetes. Written specifically for the non-specialist general reader, "The Complete Diabetes Lifestyle " will enable anyone to create an individualized diabetes management plan and feel self-empowered to deal with making those enduring changes that are fundamental to enjoying a better life. Strongly recommended for community library Health & Medicine reference collections, "The Complete Diabetes Lifestyle " is especially valuable reading for anyone having diabetes and needing to deal with its emotional as well as medical demands.

As a former practicing Registered Nurse and part of the diabetes teaching team as well as an individual with a strong family history of diabetes, a brother who is now going blind and is impotent due to diabetes,I have closely stayed up to date with trends in treatment and new information. 'The Complete Diabetes Lifestyle'is the new gold standard of teaching/sef-help books since the ADA opened its doors. It takes material that is extemely complex by medical standards and distills the essence into useful information. Ms Kay voices very consistant questions and concerns and provides realistic explanations and answers. The book is frank and even funny at times showing that this is a real person who, when confronted with a with a very real threat took the bull by the horns, attacked the problem by gaining knowledge and has offered this knowledge in a very reasonably priced book. I wish I had had this marvelous tool as a nursing student and when teaching newly diagnosed patients.
