I was pleasantly surprised at the variety offered to me. The food was delicious and it was all normal food that you have on hand in your pantry. My children are very picky eaters and they cleaned their plates and asked for more. I have battled my weight all of my life and now have a chance to eat healthy, normally and with variety. No deprivation for this girl!

This book is a very great and beneficial book. It is very entertaining also. Moshe is my father, but I am also a diabetic type 2.
I had asked my Father about eating and he had directed me to the book. The book is concise and constructive. It helped me look at other ways to do things in a positive way.
The pictures make you want to just hug Molly. They make it more real. I was amazed at the valuable way the book makes you look at things. It has helped me see thing in a different light. The ability of Molly to show people that you are not alone is heartening and I think this book should be on every parents list to buy if their child has diabetes.
Also for people that are new to this disease. It is the most clear and communicative book I have read. I thank my father and Camille Dorian for bring this book to be published. Thank you
Rebecca

Molly's Story makes understanding diabetes easy. The photos of Molly are adorable and the humor makes the book fun to read.

The book explains everything you need to know about what diabetes is and how to take care of yourself. It makes learning fun rather than work. Molly gives detailed advice on diet and exercize and treatment in an easy to read way.

Molly's attitude is positive and reading her story makes you feel OK about having diabetes.

If you were to read only one book on diabetes this would be the one. "I Have Diabetes Too" is a very easy-to-understand, readable book full of illustrations, detailed information and advice on all aspects of diabetes management. It explains how to stay healthy and prevent complications by adjusting your diet and lifestyle. It does so in such a way that it is fun to read.

I haven't seen any other book that gives so much detailed information on every aspect of diabetes (both type 1 and type 2) so concisely.

The diet information is extensive, well-illustrated and up-to-date. Information on food groups, balancing carbs and using the glycemic index is easy to understand, as is discussion of efa's (essential fatty acids) and transfats. There is an appendix that offers specific suggestions for aerobic exercise and for weight resistance exercises (which are illustrated) and explains the importance of each type.

The layout and writing style are such that both children and adults will enjoy and learn from the book. The monkey is so charismatic that I think even people without diabetes would enjoy the book (and could learn a lot about diet and exercise that is relevant to everyone)!

This is one of the books that the Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi gives to newly diagnosed children and their families as part of our We Care 2/Diabetes 101 care packages. It is upbeat, kid friendly and is perfect to bring to school to educate classmates on the basics of diabetes! We are fortunate to have the video too-it's a great film to show elementary school children to increase their understanding of their classmate's diagnosis or to teach them about diabetes in general.

I am an R.N. in an acute care hospital and this is the best book I have found for newly diagnosed diabetics. It's simple, but not childish. It gives all the pertinent information for a diabetic to get off to a good start without overloading them with a lot of medical jargon and technical information. It's officially recommended for pre-teens, but I find it beneficial for even adults. When they are ready to learn more, then they can move up to a more advanced book.

Being a diabetic for 21 years I have fought the battles that Mr. Pray writes about. In those 21 yrs I have probably read the book 6-7 times to keep me on track. Rereading the book in 2006, I have to say that Mr. Pray certainly had it more difficult than we have it today. The methods used to control diabetes then is so outdated, using urine tests and one type of insulin required him and his family to follow such tight schedules it's amazing he didn't rebell more. This book addresses the process of accepting a chronic disease not the mechanics. But they go hand-in-hand with each other. You can't have one without the other. Thank you Mr.Pray for all your help.........hope all is well in 2006.

In "Journey of a Diabetic," Lawrence Pray begins telling his story when, as a 7-year-old child, he came down with juvenile diabetes.

His onset of symptoms began when he was going away with his grandparents for the summer to Maine, when suddenly, he kept of feeling thirsty, very tired out, and the main thing was losing weight while eating large amounts of food. Nothing would fill him up, and he also had frequent urination, and could not imagine what was happening to him. When he finally collapsed, becoming very ill, the diabetes was discovered.

His family, while supportive was devastated beyond measure. His whole new regime of needles, and dietary control changed his life forever. Yet, as time passed, and Lawrence grew, he failed to accept diabetes, and had lots of difficulty with it.

It takes him many years before he learns acceptance. In fact, he grows up, gets married, and even has a child before he can even begin to not see diabetes as a stigma, but as a learning tool for others.

This is a very interesting and informative book. More than that,it is the kind of book that makes you grow up with the auther in his struggle against a disease that had been a part of his life since childhood.Every diabetic can understand the growth processes one with diabetes must go through to be able to finally accept and control this disease.Mr.Pray writes from the heart and mind of one who has learned alot and is passing on his knowledge to those who have yet to experience it.This book,a review of Mr.Pray's life from childhood to adult,is also a reflection of the lives and feelings of all diabetics.I would highly recommend it for anyone who has relationships with a diabetic.

This book is honest and realistic about the struggles of living with diabetes, but at the same time it maintains a positive and hopeful tone. It has some pretty high-level vocabulary (such as "glucose" and "autoimmune disorder") but these are terms that a child living with diabetes will need to become familiar with. The illustrations are bright and colorful and the rhyming text is fun to read. Highly recommended!

An excellent book, Julia's Journey with Diabetes explains the disease of Diabetes to children. The author uses rhythm in a "Doctor Seus-esque" manner through out the story. The art work is excellent in a folk-style manner. I recommend this book for explaining this disease to young children. The book simplifies and illustrates the symptoms, causes, complications and responses to this disease. An excellent value and it should be made available in Doctor's offices and school systems.

While there are many cookbooks today that feature meals that are quick and easy to prepare there are very few that concentrate on the special problems of the diabetic. In "Mix 'n Match Meals in Minutes for People with Diabetes" the reader will find many breakfast, lunch, and dinner recipes with complete serving and nutritional information. Each recipe has exchanges information for those who have to watch their diet closely along with information on calories, saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, fiber, sugars, and protein content.

Along with "One Pot Meals for People with Diabetes" this is a welcome cookbook of delicious recipes and a recommended read for anyone with diabetes or just looking for recipes with nutritional information.

I originally checked this book out at the library, and loved it so much I bought one for our home. Quick, easy recipes (the steak and portabello sandwich is DELICIOUS, and super quick), and allow for easy meal planning for managing the carbs for my husband's insulin pump. I would absolutely recommend!

The recipes in this book are so easy, fast, and delicious -- and full of quick helpful cooking tips -- that I'm always falling back on them rather than trying 'new' recipes in my other books. So now the recipes are getting 'old' to us! Every now and then I check back for another book of the same name/type with new recipes to try, but alas: it's not out yet. I hope they'll make another one soon. One of the best things about this book is that the recipes only use a few - in most cases 8 or fewer - ingredients, and yet are delicious and healthy. I HIGHLY recommend this book. When sticking to the portion sizes, my husband and I both lost weight without any other effort. The only down-side to this book is that the recipes are for 2 people. Now that my kids are getting older, I need recipes for more. Of course, I could always double the recipes....

Dr. Hilkovitz gets right to the point in clear, easy to understand language. The book addresses who is at risk and what the very real benefits are to take action early to identify and prevent Type 2 Diabetes 10 to 15 years before it occurs. It goes well beyond the simple diet and exercise regime and gets very specific about the latest medical treatments and drugs available. I especially like the layout of the book. The use of highlight boxes is very effective. His personal real life examples make the book interesting and relevant.

I would recommend this book to anyone who feels that they may be a candidate for Type 2 Diabetes or may know someone who is.

This is an excellent, well written book by a doctor with impeccable credentials in this area. It is a comprehensive analysis of the correlation between the metabolic syndrome and Type 2 diabetes. Metabolic syndrome is a set of conditions which include obesity, high blood pressure, and elevated cholesterol and blood glucose. Early diagnosis and treatment of this condition can prevent the occurrence of Type 2 diabetes. This book is a detailed explanation of how to recognize the symptoms for this pre-diabetic condition and an up to date listing of what medications and treatments can be used to control it.

Reading this book could add 10 to 20 years to your life.

If all you can do is buy one book, this is the one! This book is warm, understandable, thorough, educational, and worth every penny. To make things even better, it is full of wonderful recipes! I consider this book a companion, and I am not alone anymore.

I have been diagnosed with diabetes for almost a year. I have struggled through materials from different sources, doctor visits, and nutritionist visits for months and was still confused. With this book in hand, I feel more positive, more grounded, and more capable of managing my disease.

If I could rate this book freely, I would give it more than 5 stars.

The "Chez Panisse" of Diabetic Cookbooks!

This book provides me with meals that are as delicious as the resturants I frequent in Beverly Hills. It is different from other cookbooks in that, it is not typical Diabetic "American." You do not feel as if you are preparing or eating a meal for diabetes. This cookbook is romantic, especially when you are planning passionate evenings and breakfasts. Another equally import ingrediant of this gourmet book are the educational guidelines for explaining how to critical think through what your goals are and how to achieve them in a chapter by chapter "diabetes 101" support style. Mary Donkersloot wrote a very savy book for everyone to feel as if they are dinning in Beverly Hills or at the Chez Panisse!

This book contains everything I want my patients to know.

Diabetes is a major part of every family physician's practice. Though the DCCT in Type 1 diabetics and similar evidence in Type 2's mandates better control, the patient must do the bulk of management with our guidance. Unfortunately, the amount of time we have for education and the coverage for diabetes educators may be limited under managed care. I found a solution to this dilemma with The Simply Gourmet Diabetes Cookbook. The first 116 pages of the book contain the best, most concise, patient friendly explanation of diabetes and its management I've read. With nary a wasted word author Mary Donkersloot covers the New Guidelines for diabetic nutrition, the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, carbohydrate counting, weight loss, exercise and cholesterol. In the next 300 pages, she has written a complete cookbook from breakfast to desserts. A very helpful appendix contains the traditional exchange system values for common foods, a guide to reading the new nutrition labels and lists of lean, medium fat and high fat meats along with "free" foods.

Besides clear writing, the formatting is clear with well organized tables. For Type 1 diabetics, the chapter on carbohydrate counting explains how to maintain a consistent caloric intake and match one's insulin requirements for any changes. One big help is advice on compensating for sweets like occasional desserts (for which the author includes a variety of recipes). Also helpful are recipes for various ethnic foods like burritos, quesadillas and enchiladas along with information about eating out at regular restaurants and fast food restaurants. For Type 2 diabetics, chapters on weight loss and exercise essentials are superb.

The recipes are quite varied and well organized. They all contain ten or less ingredients and most have just three steps so they are easy to make. Each recipe lists total calories, percent of fat, sodium, carbohydrate choices and food exchanges for easy calculations.

The cornerstone of good diabetes control is consistent caloric intake and this book tells patients how to accomplish this. It contains everything I want my patients to know. As you all know, after informing patients of their diagnosis, the first question they usually ask is, "What should I eat?" Rather than searching through my files for my diabetic diets, I'm going to be recommending this book to answer their questions, to start them with a good diabetes education, and to save me time.

But the best thing about the book is the recipes!! Sweet potato chips is one of my family's favorites. I am cooking more often and enjoying the outcome thanks to this book.

I read this book as I sat beside my 13 year old daughter's hospital bed-- she had just been diagnosed with diabetes. It presented important information in a much more user-friendly way than the formal diabetic education we were receiving. It showed the challenges we would face, and helped me understand more the impact on the entire family.

I highly encourage all of those involved with diabetic children to read this book. I will be loaning my copy to my daughter's counselor so that she will be better equipped to help my daughter cope with her diabetes.

This book is so well written. Being a mother of a 12 year old girl who has diabetes, I could not put the book down. I laughed, cried and felt like I was there with the characters in the book. It gives the reader a good insight as to how it feels to have a loved one with diabetes, and how you are not as alone as you may feel in this situation. It also has an educational value, without feeling like you are reading another "facts only" manual on diabetes.
