What an awesome book, well written, easy to read, and sooo helpful! I saw my precious son all through out the book, and I finally felt someone understood our present struggles. I have received a lot of guidance via this book, and am eager to put all of it into practice. Everyone with a boy in their life ought to read this one.

My son age 7 years has difficulty recognising emotions. As a preschooler he was treated for a Specific Language Impairment(comprehension difficulties/language processing difficulties). His speech and language is now age appropriate.I asked the Speech Therapist for ideas to help his emotional understanding. She said I would have to ask the "Autism Professionals" even though my son does not have Autism!
I felt frustrated and misunderstood until I discovered this book. The author knows exactly where my son is coming from.At last I have found validation and help. This book is very readable. You can dip into it as it has an index or else read it chapter by chapter. The author also has an informative web-site.I would highly recommend this book.I only wish that the Professionals involved with my son knew what Dr Adam Cox(author) knows and understands!

I loved this book! It was a great tool to remind me to slow down, talk, and communicate with my two sons. Dr. Cox has a wonderful way to meld real-life examples with his parenting suggestions and I've been able to apply these lessons at home. The author's writing style is friendly & accessible which made it a joy to read. Highly recommended.

Very Useful and Interesting Book on Boys' Psychology

Hooray! A smart, energetic, and insightful parenting book. (I've read too many that rely on obvious little snippets such as: "if baby is crying, try comforting him.") This book was more interesting than I expected, and not only discusses important issues but then comes through on the critical part: what to do. The author makes a strong argument for the necessity of developing social and emotional intelligence in our sons, so that they can succeed in contemporary society. According to the author, in past generations, the strong stoic type of man may have been able to remain married and find a job grounded in physical labor, but modern relationships and economies demand a higher level of interpersonal awareness and communication skills. Boys who aren't helped to develop these skills--in ways that do not diminish their sense of masculinity and accomplishment--could be risking social and academic failure. Boys of all ages are discussed, but are divided into three main groups: shy and anxious boys, angry boys, and those who have developmental problems that make communication and relating more difficult. Because the author includes information about all kinds of situations, you might want to use your book as a reference and read the chapters that relate to your own child as it is clearly organized. I read all parts as I found it fascinating and helpful for understanding my son's friends and classmates. There's a particularly good section on dealing with school issues as well.

Reading this book is like taking a course with a great teacher who makes a subject come alive. Many case studies illustrate the author's points, and while there is a lot of depth to the ideas discussed, it's a very personable, approachable read. If you want a new perspective on why your son acts and reacts as he does, as well as practical ways to handle more challenging "boy" moments, read this and be inspired. As Cox says in the epilogue, "raising emotionally healthy boys is not a task for the timid or weak of spirit--it is a job for visionaries, parents who can see the men their sons will become. Parenting our children requires all the energy we can summon. It requires us to keep our wits, look with insight, and forgive ourselves when we make mistakes. It is both a job and a passion. And nothing we will ever do will be as important." Highly recommended.

I highly recommend this book for all parents or caregivers of boys, but especially if you have a boy with learning or attention problems (ADHD). This book not only gives very practical, realistic advice about how to understand your son if he is shy or withdrawn, but also provides great insight into why he may be reluctant to talk and how to bring him out. For many kids with learning disabilities and ADHD, the academic aspect gets focussed on but there can also be social problems at school and in the family. This book addresses both school and family issues, but we found the psychological insights to be extremely helpful in understanding why a fifth-grade boy would be having more trouble in school at this age, and also why he would talk about hobbies and technical things but couldn't tell us why he was getting upset. This book has also helped us understand an older teenager--and know when to step in and when it was fine to give him more space. When communication improves, behavior and respect tend to improve also. We've read some other "self-help" books but this was the first one that seemed to cover all our areas of concern. It's not filled with technical language but it was a "smarter" book than most we've read. Dr. Cox obviously knows about boys and understands what the day to day reality of most families is like. Despite the title, which might imply it's only for "quiet boys," it should be required reading for every parent of boys! We wish we had read this book sooner.

A great book listing numerous coping strategies through "how it was for me" situations. Often funny, but never patronising, this book deserves to be the subject market leader for a long time to come. The section on bullying is particularly thought provoking. If you want to know what goes on inside a dyspraxic mind this is what you need!

I highly recommend Caged in Chaos because it is a book on Dyspraxia like no other. There are many academic "how to's" regarding this often mis-understood disability, but not one on what it actually is like to be dyspraxic. I really loved the fact that this book gives readers a snapshot into the dyspraxic child's (or teenager's) world. Caged in Chaos sets itself apart from all other books on the subject. How can we really help those with dyspraxia if we don't know what it feels like to walk in their shoes? Also, author Victoria Biggs' light sense of humor is very refreshing. She's an amazing person -- and terrific role model for my dyspraxic son.

This book is fantastic. It's positive, witty and full of practiacal advice for people with dyspraxia and related disorders. It is intelligently and sensitively written. Reading a book by a fellow dyspraxic, who has come through more than most people is really uplifting. Ms Biggs is well informed about dyspraxia. The book is realistic but optimistic about what is is possible for a dyspraxic person to achieve. I congratulate Victoria Biggs.

As the parent of a dyspraxic pre-teen, I have found that while there is an increasing amount of information available about dyspraxia (a.k.a. apraxia), there is not much out there about dyspraxia in older kids and young adults. Not only is "Caged in Chaos" just such a resource, but it provides an insider's point of view, as the author is dyspraxic herself (an extra star for that fact alone.)

In addition to providing many helfpul coping strategies, "Caged in Chaos" also reaffirms that "you are not alone." I lost count of the number of times that that the author mentioned experiences that my child is going through, too. As the general public is largely unfamiliar with dyspraxia, it is quite comforting to know that there are others out there that are sharing similar things.

Just The Facts

"A guide to diagnosis for parents and professionals". That's an accurate description of what this book is all about.

The book is divided into 9 chapters. The introduction tells us why diagnosis is important - not so much to label the child but to empower parents with the knowledge to seek proper treatment.

The next chapter highlights some of the early signs that make parents suspect if their child may be autistic. Chapter 3 deals with the history and theories or the causes of autism. Even the experts don't know everything and new insights into ASD are gained every day.

The couple of chapters will turn an uninformed layman into an informed one. Most of us think of autism as a single disorder with its classic signs. It is more accurate to view autism as a spectrum of disorders that can vary from individual to individual. The 5 ASDs are namely:

1. Autistic disorder
2. Asperger's disorder
3. Pervasive developmental disorder
4. Childhood disintegrative disorder
5. Rett's disorder

The author explains each disorder within the spectrum in great detail. Even though a lot of jargon is used, concise explanations are provided. The curious reader has much to gain from all this.

The next couple of chapters deal with the diagnostic process. The author emphasises on a multi-disciplinary approach. However, parents would know that the ideal diagnostic team is seldom possible. Most children are diagnosed by a lone psychologist. The final chapters deal with treatment. The author discusses the pros and cons of drug treatment, various teaching methods, inclusive schollong etc. Many real life experiences of parents with children with ASD are briefly mentioned in the book. I find it useful to let the reader know about what other parents are doing and have gone through. I have no problems digesting all the information in the book, but some of the less curious readers may want a book more suited to "dummies".

As the parent of a son with Asperger's Syndrome, I've read many books on autistic spectrum disorders (ASD's). I found this book to be a detailed, clearly-written overview of ASD's. The book contains a wealth of information regarding how to decide whether your child may have an ASD and if so, which diagnosis might apply. The book also provides an overview of various treatments, but the main focus is diagnosis.

As the mother of a little boy with PDD-NOS, I found this an excellent, comprehensive read. The author seemed to cover the characteristic "quirks" seen in these kids in greater detail than I've found in other introductory books. For example, she mentioned an obsession with the mechanization and movement of objects, something I'd noticed in my son from an early age. I'd highly recommend this to someone just starting out on their journey to understand their child.

Did you ever wonder if something with your child was slightly amiss? Did you ever wonder if your child's behavior was developmentally on par with other children? This book discusses the autism spectrum in detail. It is not overly complicated to read and is perfect for those who want things broken down simply and succinctly. When people think of autism they tend to think of Rain Man. In reality, autism has many different levels - the spectrum. This book contains very helpful charts for parents (particularily first time parents) who wonder if their child is developing normally. It is helpful for parents who don't even know what questions to begin to ask their child's doctor. Fascinating subject matter even if you do not have a child that is affected by an autism spectrum disorder.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is one of those childhood development conditions that responds best when diagnosed and treated earlier. There are five types of autism collected under the category of ASD: Autistic Disorder; Asperger's Disorder; Childhood Disintegrative Disorder; Rett's Disorder; and Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified. Demystifying Autism Spectrum Disorders: A Guide To Diagnosis For Parents And Professionals by ASD therapist and diagnostician Carolyn Thorwarth Bruey (Managing Partner of Developmental Disabilities Resources, Lititz, Pennsylvania) is an ideal introduction for non-specialist general readers such as parents and family members with autistic children, and has much to commend it to the attention of students of Developmental Disabilities as well. Basic, comprehensive and comprehensible information is provided on the history, myths, features, diagnosis, and treatment of children with ASD. Enhanced with a Resource Guide and Recommended Readings for further study, Demystifying Autism Spectrum Disorders is a perfect addition to community library Parenting Resources as well as Psychology reference collections as well.

A good heart is essential but not enough in rehabilitation work. This book thus gives readers the basic understanding of people with different kinds of disabilities, enabling us to work well with them. What's more, the numerous heartfelt photos show us that if we can get things right, people with disabilities can enjoy a joyful life.
What's more, the author is so kind that he even encourages readers to xerox the content if necessary provided that not everyone can afford buying a book.

I'm a pediatric physical therapist who works with many people from Mexico and Latin American countries. This book (I often use the spanish version, also on Amazon.com) contains very useful information that I can share with families to help them better understand their disabled child's conditions. It has many creative methods of building equipment for little to no money that are important in our days of managed care.

There are some conditions, like polio, that are uncommon here in America. However, some of my imigrent families have children that have had polio. I used this book to make up for gaps in my own training. In fact, I've learned something useful from almost any page. This book belongs in the car of any therapist, (PT, OT) or person who works with disabled imigrent children. I highly reccomend it.

I used the book and found it to be very helpful to families.

As a former PCV in The West Indies, I used this book for ideas to share with families who had special needs children. It has many low cost alternatives to equipment that is often too costly for families without resources. The book also addresses the need for a handicapped child to do useful work in the family unit, something that is often forgotten. Self esteem can be taught if a child is given tasks, however small. I had to leave the book at the PeaceCorps Library when I left, and think that no Early Interventionist, OT or PT should be without a copy. A copy in Spanish and a copy in English would be a great asset.

Second book I read when trying to figure out whether my son had autism/PDD. Not for the parent who is faint of heart, but excellent, balanced, and objective resource for the parent who wants a deeper understanding of the research literature. Depending on your educational background, some chapters may be incomprehensible (e.g., the chapter on neurochemicals), but almost all are accessible to the well-educated and attentive layperson.

[...] & Schafer Autism Report

Review Date: 2008-10-29
The following review was written by Jennifer James of "The Mom Salon" for mom bloggers ([...]), and also appeared in the 10/26/08 issue of the Schrader Autism Report.

I want to preface this book review by saying that neither one of my daughters has autism or autism spectrum disorder, but as I delved deeper into Hope for the Autism Spectrum I found myself surprised by how riveted I became in Sally Kirk's moving story of living with a child who does indeed have the disorder and determined immediately that this is the book that I will recommend to anyone I run across who is dealing with autism on any level.
In Hope for the Autism Spectrum: A Mother and Son Journey of Insight and Biomedical Intervention, Sally Kirk lays everything on the table about the disorder and doesn't hold back detailing her experience discovering that her child had autism spectrum disorder and describes in laymen's terms the latest medical treatments and scientific advances to help improve the lives of children like her son.
Parents who begin seeing telltale signs of autism in their toddlers will find a refuge in this deeply personal tome of a family's life living with a child with autism spectrum disorder and a mother's incessant drive to help find the necessary help desperately needed by her son.
What makes Sally Kirk's story and extensive research so essential for children affected by this disorder is she looked at the underlying physical problems of her son and figured out ways to minimize his symptoms by altering his diet, using nutritional supplements, and staying away from heavy metals. All of Kirk's recommendations in her book are easy to understand and have minimal costs.
Every part of Sally Kirk's book is easy to understand and in reading it you will hear the reassurances of a parent seasoned in this disorder. Essentially, you will feel as though Kirk is tightly holding your hand throughout your own process of coming to terms with your child who may be showing signs of autism spectrum disorder or has already been diagnosed.
Hope for the Autism Spectrum is a book that should be on every family's shelf who is going through the early trials of autism as it will save them a lot of heartache. As its title suggests Hope for the Autism Spectrum does offer limitless hope for its readers, but beyond that Kirk's writing and tone throughout assure every bleary-eyed, seemingly defeated parent who is going through this disorder that the light is indeed bright at the end of the tunnel.

I find this book easier to follow than many others that have been published. I started reading this a few weeks before seeing a DAN! doctor, and this book provided me with a solid foundation of the basics of biomedical treatment. The book is written in terms parents can understand without needing a medical background. I'm a visual learner, so the flowcharts are very helpful in understanding cause and effect. Also, there are good appendices. I refer to this book often.

I have read practically every biomedical book out there on autism for my little boy. Most of my books find new homes. This book will be on my shelf for a long time. If you have read Dr. Kenneth Bock book on autism and Dr Mccandles book you know they are good and this one is right up there with them. I felt the first part of the book was a little drawn out. The last part of the book has a wealth of information with the newest information you will need. From some of the best probiotics to purchase to alternating different fungal medications. There is even a website you can go to, if you can't afford a DAN doctor to get you the tests you need, you can go through this site to get the tests without a doctor. This book really helped me to understand more about yeast and clostradia and alot of other matters that most autistic children have and i consider I now have an arsenal of information to help my little boy. I can't recommend this book enough to anyone trying to save there child through biomedical intervention. Great book.

What the Autism Research Institute says about this book

Review Date: 2008-10-10
The Autism Research Institute highly recommends this book (I have attached their review below). I think that speaks volumes about the value of the book content. I can also tell you that the book is easy to read and understand (and even entertaining at times). It provides detailed information to parents about how they can help their children through changes in diet and by reducing exposure to environmental toxins. Its value lies in its heartfelt story and in its nuts-and-bolts advice.

Here is the Autism Research Institute review:
Sallie Kirk joins the ranks of Warrior Moms who have turned author with her new book Hope for the Autism Spectrum, (Jessica Kingsley Publishers, September 2008). In her first-hand account of the journey she's taken through the autism spectrum with her son Will, she describes how her experiences using a biomedical approach served to vastly improve the quality of his life.

As Will's story unfolds over the course of this 320-page book, readers learn of the many biomedical interventions available - all told from a mother's invaluable first-hand perspective.
A strong proponent of the Defeat Autism Now! approach (a project of the Autism Research Institute -ARI), Ms. Kirk describes with careful detail the progress Will made in the care of a physician skilled at implementing these treatments, and includes ARI's Parental Ratings of Biomedical Interventions in the appendix of her book.

Hope for the Autism Spectrum received the coveted starred (noteworthy) review in the Library Journal, which called it "An essential book for public libraries." Read the Library Journal review online

Although biomedical treatment is generally recommended as early as possible, Ms. Kirk's story proves that it's never too late: she didn't begin biomedical treatment with Will until he was 11, and it was these very interventions that made a huge difference in his progress.

A highly recommended book for parents who want to learn about how biomedical interventions can help their child.

As a friend and colleague I tremendously valued Pierre Sollier's work with the Tomatis Method, and witnessed the elaborate process of writing "Listening for Wellness". Having had, like Pierre, Dr. Alfred Tomatis as my trainer and mentor, I can assert that this is the most in depth book about Dr. Tomatis' theories, methods, treatment strategies, and human development philosophy.

With this unique book Pierre establishes himself as a master of introducing any reader with ease and clarity to the complexity of the Tomatis Method. He illustrates the multiple facets of the Tomatis Method and its applications in education and healing, from the perspective of an exceptional practitioner and therapist. Pierre forcefully sets the stage for understanding that this method has great implications in both human excellence and well being, as well as in ameliorating and healing a number of problems. In 1967 I was the the first person to use the Tomatis Electronic Ear in the United States at a time when the concept was truly "beyond the pale" in the Boston area.. I have known Pierre Sollier since the early 1990s. Although I have learned a great deal about this method over the years, I have eagerly awaited his book. Because of his rich association with Alfred Toamtis and his ability to translate his books, he is able to offer us insight that few others could have done or would have had the patience, perseverance and inclination to attempt. His book helps review what I know and has added immeasurably to my understanding. Having spent time helping out in Pierre's Californai center, I have known of Pierre's deep respect for all his clients and his joy in the work.. That approach and dedication shines forth in this extraordinary book. Elizabeth Verrill,

I have read many books written by Dr. Tomatis and have learned so much from them. I then read Pierre Sollier's book Listening for Wellness and was so surprised at the educational value of the book. I am a Tomatis Therapist and I am always trying to learn more about the Method. Pierre's book was concise, to the point, interesting, educational and revealing as to the basis for the Tomatis Method, how to evaluate a person for the Method, how to plan the treatment and what to expect from the treatment. It is easy to read for parents who wish to continue to learn more about the Tomatis Method so I would recommend it for parents as well as professionals. I refer to the book often and would recommend it to any new Tomatis Method therapist who wants to continue the educational process. It is also a good value for the price and the printing of the book is excellent with sewn binding not glued so it will last forever. Angela Sallerson RCTC

Barbara Quinn and Anthony Malone really wrote a book for the average parent to understand. The book is not bogged down with medical terms that are difficult to comprehend but rather uses terms an average parent can understand. Thank you so much for helping parents help their special needs child.

Full disclosure: my nephew's "story" is in this book, as told by my brother-in-law. When my sister gave me this book I was moved to tears as I read it, because she wants all of us who know and love her son "Robby" to understand his Asperger's Syndrome, and its treatments.

AS is a perplexing syndrome, and the spectrum of PDDs is confusing and multi-focal. For parents, families and friends, this book is a wonderful starting point. The book lays it out in easy-to-digest chunks, most useful for anyone seeking to understand the PDD continuum and its manifestations in children and young adults.

It is clear, concise and (except for the parents' stories) unemotional. It will help anyone affected by a PDD to understand the background, the symptoms, the diagnosis and possible intervention techniques. I am delighted that Ms. Malone and Dr. Quinn are part of my nephew's diagnostic team, and that they have produced this excellent book. And I'm glad my sister & brother-in-law have shared it with our family. Without communication, there can be no understanding.

Excellent book!!! I read this book in one night! It was so easy to read and understand pervasive developmental disorder. I would recommend this book to those who have a loved one recently diagnosed. The autism spectrum is wide. It gave great detail on both ends of the spectrum. Lots of information. Had a hard time putting this book down. If you need a book about PDD, this is the one to get first.

As the parent of a child recently diagnosed with PDD-NOS, this book is fantastic and explains a lot in terms for the everyday person. It's also great for educators and people that are do not have very much experience working with chilren within this spectrum. Our son is also very lucky to be a patient of one of the Doctor's that is in Dr. Malone's practice and he will meet Barbara Quinn this fall.

Excellent resource!

This is a very informative & understandable read for parents & educators of children with ADHD. It gives a lot of useful interventions that are easy to set up. It's a great resource for those CSE meetings to determine if your child qualifies for any help or adjustments in how his work is review & graded. I would recommend this to any parent who is navigating the Special Education & 504 Maze.

From the wide range of ADHD symptoms and common difficulties parents face in diagnosis and handling ADHD kids to solutions to these problems based around four rules, Dr. Kutscher discusses the basics of handling ADHD kids, offering checklists, discussions of both school and home solutions, and more. Any health library strong in ADHD solutions and diagnosis needs this easy approach, which will appeal to parents common confused by jargon and medical studies.

I recommend this book to any parent who has recently entered the ADHD world with one of their children. My 9yr old daughter was diagnosed with ADHD inattentive type this spring. ADHD Living Without Brakes is the first book I read after sitting through the parent feedback session with the child psychologist who performed my daughter's neuro/psych test.

I found this book to be a wonderful diving board into deeper waters of ADHD reading, if you will. In 130 pages, Dr. Kutscher clearly, consisely and effectively tells us about ADHD in terms of brain physiology, emotional effects on the ADHD'er, strains on family life and a memorable explanation of what it must feel like to have ADHD. For me, that last bit was unexpected and cherished. So many times while reading this book did I stumble across an "ah-ha!" moment of recognition.

After reading ADHD Living Without Brakes I understood my daughter exponentially better than I had before; and I felt confident in choosing further reading on ADHD that would have seemed overwhelming at first (you know, the three inch thick books on ADHD that include a maddening amount of information of which you'll only need a small percentage).

Dr. K's descriptions of ADHD's effects on the brain's executive functions are invaluable. Understanding executive function opens the door to sympathy and help for the ADHD child. His explanation of co-morbid dysfunctions are eye-opening.

He gives parents simple steps we can take to make our child's life function smoother and for us all to feel more sane at home. Using his techniques has worked well for us. His suggestions are basic, loving and realistic, rather than a complex system that needs special training and memorization.

I only have two criticisms of Dr. Kutscher's book:
-- Be warned that his language can be a little harsh toward parents in a couple of places. I'm guessing that his experience has been with many families who have lived in a crisis mode for a long time. For those cases, the blunt language is very appropriate and it's good to get it out there to keep our perspective clear. I will grant that Dr. Kutscher also gives parents grace in the book as well. Thank you for that! There's a balance -- just don't be shocked when you come across a couple of zingers aimed at parents.

-- In my opinion the summary should have been handled much differently. The book is 166 pages long; 35 of that is the summary! The summary literally restates ALL the pertinant info from every section of the book. That's great and everything; but it doesn't do it in bullet form, instead it's another narrative, most pages containing huge verbatim chunks from the front of the book. Good grief that was laborious to read. Yes, it's very important to read all the information more than once; but I didn't expect such a long winded summary. Brief notes with page numbers for cross-referencing would have been fine.

All that being said, I find this book my favorite so far, in terms of telling parents why ADHD looks, acts, sounds and feels the way it does. This book helped our family tremendously. I keep it next to me at my desk.

These are my kind of fables! I love the different points of view. It's past time people on the spectrum and people with a myriad of challenges had a turn at bat.

As a child, I said I didn't like "stories with morals" because they were the kind "people tell when they're mad at you." This is a refreshing change of pace from the preachy, personal dig and judgmental tone that many moralistic tales take. Kudos to this book!

Searching for a book on fables / folktales and was delighted when I came across this book. Although illustrated and retold by adults with disabilities, I think this is a great book to encourage and empower students of all backgrounds, special needs or ELL. I especially like the section of "What This Story Means to Me" after each fable.

This is a charming and unque book. The artists' stories provide a nice counterpoint to the fables. Having not read Aesop's fables since I ws a child, I was amazed how insightful and apropos they remain. This book would make a nice inspirational gift.
