Human Behavior, Learning, and the Developing Brain: Atypical Development is an anthology of essays by experts in the field
concerning the latest research on brain-behavior connections in atypically developing children. Covering brain development
in children with autism, Williams syndrome, learning and language disabilities, ADHD, and cognitive deficits (in the case
of infants of mothers with diabetes), Human Behavior, Learning, and the Developing Brain addresses the molecular and genetic
bases of brain development, as well as neural structure and function, behavioral manifestations, and sociocultural contexts.
Applied tools range from genetic markers and functional brain imaging to classroom evaluations. The practical use of this
congregated wisdom can facilitate the prediction, early identification, and professional intervention to the benefit of children
with atypical brain development. An ideal text for graduate-level psychology students and college library shelves.

This book is a gem. With humor, wisdom, and candor, Dave Hingsburger challenges his readers to come to grips with (and celebrate)
the humanity, dignity, and worth of persons with disabilities. His frank discussion of sexuality is an overlay for a book
that's really about freedom and basic human rights.

Although this book is a bit pricey it is well worth the money. It has wonderful introductory sections that address all aspects
of basic developmental biology including a description of development of specific organs, signaling pathways, and relevant
molecular processes. By describing how these processes can go awry as a consequence of gene mutation it manages to make clear
why an understanding of developmental biology has direct impact on biomedicine. It is densely packed with important information
and makes an excellent reference manual. My graduate students loved it!

This book helped me to realize that there are many parents out there who are faced with life changing news everyday. Through
reading the experiences in this book, it showed me the different emotions wrapped up in families with disabilities. I am
studying to be a special education teacher, and I know that this book will be a reference for me when relating to the parents
of my students. If you are a special educator, or anyone whose life has been touched by a child with a disability, you MUST
purchase this book!

This book gives excellent suggestions on what can be done in different situations that a speech pathologist may run into.
It also briefs the reader on many of the tests used in clinics today and compares them to each other. It tackles cultural
and testing issues. Many disorders are defined in the book as well as what to do about them. It also includes quizzes at the
end of each chapter.

"Using the Program Guide: This Program Guide provides what you need to understand concepts and strategies for teaching social skills; master instructional skills and procedures in a step-by-step process; and obtain practice, feedback, and evaluation. Although the guide is intended to be the closest on-paper approximation to in vivo training, only you can supply the elements that will bring training to life. Make a commitment, be creative, and schedule you time carefully..." [from book]
"Group Training Manual: This book supplements the Program Guid to Learning to Get Along: Social Effectiveness Training for People With Developmental Disabilities.
The Teaching Strategies and other techniques described in the Program Guide are essental to successful implementation of the group training procedures described here. If you have not yet studied the Program Guide and completed its learning activities, do so before you continue.
The format supplied here and in the Program Guide blends structured and unstructured activities so that training can occur on two levels: Individuals are taught new skills systematically and are then given ample opportunity to use them spontaneously with your guidance and support. The Program Guide provides methods for teaching social skills in the context of ongoing activities and events; this book will prepare you to use those methods for formal teaching of social skills in a small group setting.
Teaching social skills in a series of structured group sessions has two main advantages: It lets you work with a number of people at the same time, and it sets the stage for a variety of spontaneous social behaviors. This approach also brings challenges. In particular, it requires you to introduce new skills while at the same time managing and responding to ongoing behaviors. Because of the complexity of the undertaking, we recommend that you teach with a partner.
Part I of this book includes chapters to help you get your group training effort started. Chapter 1 introduces the components of a typical group training session, and chapter 2 gives step-by-step instructions for conducting a Skill Lesson. Chapter 3 highlights necessary operational preparations, both for the instructional series and for each session. Chapter 4 will guide you through a practice session before you teach about group instruction.
Part II presents session outlines based on the 21 Core Social Skills introduced in chapter 5 of the Program Guide. Specifically, each session outline does the following:
* Gives you step-by-step guidelines for conducting a Skill Lesson on a particular Core Social Skill.
* Outlines auxiliary procedures (e.g., refreshment time and activities) that reinforce the skill and create opportunities for incidental teaching to support other effective social behaviors.
* Identifies skills that are especially important in each of these auxiliary procedures.
* Offers a context in which to teach target behaviors, or social skills identified as important for individual clients.
Finally, appendices provide supplementary training materials, including four scripts to teach relaxation skills, the details of activities and games used to augment the group training sessions, and a consumer satisfaction survey." [from book]

This book covers so many topics that I can't even come up with a summative word. It's all over the place!
That's not such a bad thing, but it just makes it difficult to fit this book in a niche. Is it for undergraduates? Graduate students? Veteran Teachers? Politicians? Everybody?
I guess that makes it pretty intriguing: lots of options for early childhood settings. Check it out.

Rebecca Chilvers met many children in her work as a psychologist at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London. Once her experience allowed her to understand the uniqueness of children with autism she wrote this book to allow them to be heard. The amazing thing with this book is that she lets the children's voices be heard -not hers.
As many children with autism have difficulty expressing themselves through words, she included their artwork- in full color. This makes this book un-like any other book published on autism.
Poetry written by siblings is also included.
I am lucky to be the mother of one of the children chronicled in this book.
What I feel the reader will most enjoy about this book is the author has intertwined what research into autism has shown with what the children with high-functioning autism feel. This insight helps what the children say and draw make sense to the reader.
Some of the topics covered include -
What is so different about me ?
School - social problems, fitting in, help and support
Family dynamics,Handling obsessions,The future -social ,educational
This book would make a lovely present for a special education teacher, an art teacher, a parent or a pediatrician.
I hope this book will help society to understand these delightful children and include them more in our society.
