Unique & Important Book

This is a unique and well-written book of advanced therapeutics. It is a great resource for those difficult therapeutic challenges, using a combination of anecdotal experience and thorough literature review. The authors are well-known and universally respected. Unlike many "me too" books in medicine, the style and substance of this book makes it stand out among its peers.

It is friendly and informal, and makes for easy reading. The various quotes used throughout the book beautifully accompany the text and make for a more enjoyable reading experience.

A most valuable resource for all with an interest in Eczema
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-03
This is an extremely useful resource for anyone seeking clear and up-to-date information about Atopic Eczema. Although the title mentions Practitioners, the style and content are accessible to the lay reader. Early chapters look concisely yet comprehensively at the factors contributing to atopic skin disease. This material provides much interesting background understanding. The latest thinking about the various treatment approaches is discussed, and the latter part of the book deals with a 'habit reversal' approach which the authors have pioneered and which works well to augment the efficacy of a treatment regime. The tone of the book is positive and friendly. For anyone wishing to look a little further into atopic eczema and its management this book is invaluable.

For anyone wishing to gain a good understanding of the factors contributing to atopic skin disease and its management, this is a most useful resource. Early chapters examine the nature of atopic eczema and factors which contribute to it. The latest thinking on approaches to treatment are covered, and the latter part of the book details a 'habit reversal' approach pioneered with much success by the authors, which contributes to an effective and lasting treatment regime. Although the title mentions practitioners, the style and content are accessible by the lay reader. The tone is friendly and positive. This book contains a great wealth of useful information which will contribute enormously to the understanding of anyone with a serious interest in atopic eczema. I recommend it very strongly.

Pictures worth a thousand words

This book has the best collection of Behcet's-related pictures (skin lesions, etc) that you'll find in one place. If you've wondered what a pathergy reaction looks like, for example, or erythema nodosum, this book is an excellent resource. Warning -- if you're a BD patient AND a parent (and you can afford this book in the first place), it's not something to leave lying around the house for your kids to find: some pictures are horrific and might even give *adults* nightmares. If you're a doctor, this book will give you a basic overview of Behcet's -- but there's more detailed info on clinical research and outcomes in the "Contemporary Synopsis on Behcet's" (for info up to 1989) and the "Essential Guide to Behcet's" (for info up till 2002).

If you have Behcet's Disease, take this book to your doctor!

This book is aimed at physicians treating people with Behcet's Disease, a rare autoimmune vasculitis. I think its best features are the many pages of close-up color photos of what Behcet's Disease can do to your body and skin. Take this book to your doctor(s) if a diagnosis of Behcet's Disease is being considered! It's expensive, but you simply can't get this type of resource elsewhere.

There are more skin cancers than all other cancers combined in the US! For that reason alone, there is a critical need to have a text that comprehensively presents this topic.

CANCER OF THE SKIN fills that need and more. All aspects of this cancer from diagnosis to treatment are fully reviewed. Of particular help was the atlas chapter on "The Many Faces of Melanoma" showing common and unusual presenations.

A must for anyone interested in skin cancer!

Student's Most Beautyful Primer For The Field
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 1998-03-01
This is a concise book (300 text-pages). So, logically, an amount of specialty-descriptions and therapeutic "one-in-ten-thousand-cases" one would find in a typical standard-textbook are omitted here. Yet, all relevant entities of Dermatology are covered and presented in detail when needed. 200 or so full-color-pictures display each condition in a manner that aims at immediate understanding, with a tendency towards the more macroscopic aspects. Besides, this book even has got a didactic concept: Each chapter is forewarded by a summary of the entities to follow and by up to five or so well-knit stories of unsolved cases all of which made us courious to know more. Great plus: You don't have to think of rehearsing, Clin. Derm. just takes You there. And an aesthetic concept: Quite intelligent use of types, colors from blue to green, and a gifted person's coverpainting...if that should matter. Readability: The book starts off with the relavant and typical conditions and there is no superfluous information, so there is no need for a priority list. The text progresses well, non-redundancy and TV-like "consumability" are its srength. You will remermber All You read and maybe even understand it... So just go from cover to cover, within two or three days You are easily there - see You.

At the end I would like to congratulate Dr.H.Hunter Handsfield on writing such a wonderful book.

I believe this was a great book, it provided a lot of needed information on stds, the contraction of certain disease, etc. It was almost like a reference guide to me. It made me feel much better after i had gained all the needed knowledge. STD'S are one of those "quiet diseases", that nobody really talks about...However,you have to get your information from somewhere, right?....So why not get it from a reliable source with a huge layout of information.(even pictures) So, all in all i rate this book a 5, i doubt it could throughly describe std's any better then it did.

THIS TEXT IS AN EXCELLENT REFERENCE FOR THE NEW AS WELL AS THE EXPERIENCED PRACTITIONER. IT ILLUSTRATES BOTH THE COMMON AND RARER SKIN DISORDERS AND LESIONS. THE SECTIONS ON VIRAL AND BULLOUS INFECTIONS ARE INVALUABLE IN ESTABLISHING A DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS. SECTIONS ON HIV AND MISCELLANEOUS MANIFESTATIONS HELP TO ESTABLISH A DIAGNOSIS FOR THOSE NEW TO PRACTICE. THE FULL COLOR ILLUSTRATIONS AND FIGURES PROVIDE BOTH VISUAL AND DIDACTIC DESCRIPTIONS OF THE DISORDERS. A DEFINITE MUST HAVE IN EVERY REFERENCE LIBRARY

I am vet tech student interested in studying veterinary dermatology and this book was perfect for me. The photos in this book are of great quality and in addition, the chapters are very well organized and descriptive. I would reccommend this book to anyone interested in this branch of veterinary medicine. You may want to have a medical terminology dictionary on hand if you are a student just starting out...

A great first dermatology atlas!
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2000-07-05
Ever since I graduated from vet school I have been looking for a good dermatology atlas. It seemed like the ones that had nice photos had just that, no text, and the ones that DID have text with each picture only told you about the disease but not what to do with it. This book has it all - for each disease, a definition, etiology and pathogenesis, clinical features, ddx, diagnostic tests and so important - management. Oh and nice colour photos. What I found weird at first was the way the book is laid out - not by dermatoses cause, as I would expect (like - parasites, allergies, systemic, etc) but by they way they appear - pruritic, nodular, ulcerative, endocrine, etc. But in the end it made sense.

Excellent combination of pictures and text

Most books on Dermatology I know have good pictures OR good text. This one has good pictures AND good (although brief) text. Furthermore, the conditions are arranged by the predominant sign (pruritus, alopecia, inflammation, etc.) which facilitates greatly finding the disease you are dealing with. On top, the authors frequently give you a list of the rule-outs you should consider in each case. Diagnosis of dermatoses is still difficult but, without this book, it might be impossible. Iowa State Press managed again to put out a great book at a small pice. Get it!
