I learned alot about people and issues with skin that I never understood before. This book was both entertaining and informative and anyone who wants to learn more about their body and their skin should read it.

No one can argue with the credentials of the authors of this interesting and engaging book. It is certainly an interesting account of the life of a dermatologist and some interesting case studies. However, if you are looking for a book on the effects of sunlight on human health I would urge you to look elsewhere. The authors exclusive focus on pathology gives them a kind of tunnel vision which misses the larger health picture and their resulting advice (in a nutshell, wear SPF 30 sunscreen and stay out of the sun) may be harmful. While they give a passing nod to the health benefits of sunlight (allows the skin to synthesize Vit D), they seem to have not read the literature on the effects of sunlight in lowering blood pressure, lowering blood sugar, decreasing cholesterol, building lean tissue, increasing the production of sex hormones, and actually increasing the resistance to infection and cancer. None of these benefits are available to the person slathered in SPF 30 sunscreen. I would urge you to read Zane Kime, MD's book "Sunlight Could Save Your Life" or Dr. Downing's book "Daylight Robbery" before you decide to follow the advice in this book. Of course, caution IS well advised. The two books just mentioned help the reader to determine how to get the benefits without undue risks. Unlike the Balin's, Dr. Dowling says that sunlight actually stimulates production of antibodies and strenghtens the body's defenses which actually help suppress the growth of melanoma. The Balin's seem to totally ignore a several thousand year history of sunlight therapy in medicine and the fact that many human cultures haved lived under intense sunlight all their lives without the constant care of dematologists and SPF 30 sunscreens and without dying of melanomas. The Balin's should pay more attention to the abnormal conditions of modern life (indoor living, ozone depletion, high use of polyunsaturated fats & refined foods) which seem more to blame than sunlight for the current epidemic of melanomas. Sunlight can be a blessing to our health if we use it wisely but you would never know it from reading this book.

This book has excellent pictures and tables, however it lacks in depth and substance. For example, in the atopic dermatitis section, there is no discussion on differential diagnosis/other clinical conditions to consider. The drug allergy chapter has a nice chart for drug desensitization, but the chapter lacks a good discussion on any of the most important drugs...IE the PCN drug section is skimpy at best. And for some reason, they don't even have devoted chapter on food allergy. Overall, I am disappointed with this book. This book is best applicable to medical students and residents. In my opinion, it will not fit the need of Allergy/Asthma/Immunology fellows or practicing staff. I highly recommend "Pediatric Allergy" (also from Mosby) which is an excellent resource for Pediatric Allergy. Patterson's Allergic diseases is also good reference.

This book has great color illustrations. It is easy reading and would be an excellent resource for the family practice office. There are detailed descriptions and also treatment guidelines as well as differential diagnoses. It is not all inclusive of dermatologic problems. However it does proviode a wide range of normally seen skin disorders. Fitzpatrick also has an atlas of dermatalogic problems but this book is much easier to read.

This is an excellent book to read. I have learn so much about brown skin and various ethnic skin type. Everyone should read this book because their is a great need for knowledge on how to treat ethnic skin. Do you know how many time I've have heard professional skin care specialist say they are afraid to work on black/brown skin because of hyperpigmentation. This book is detailed, colorful pictures and insightful information on women of color. A word to the wise...Seek to understand information for yourself before you take someone elses negative/cheap reviews. Anyone who are seeking to pursue knowledge about black/brown skin this is the book. It's worth the investment to have in your library.

Good reference work for the practicing esthetician, as there is very little in-print regards "black skin care" for the professional costmetologist. However, like all the other books published by Milady, it's somewhat overpriced. Shop around for a used copy, or check it out at your Library, or have your Library do an "Inter-Library-Loan" request for you. Whether you buy a copy or check it out from the Library, do make the effort to read it.

I edited this book, in the process of which I read several other books on hair loss. As a reader, you will find that this edition beats any other title on the market hands down. The information is clearly organized, the book is up-to-date with discussions of leading-edge therapies like hair cloning and stem cell therapy, and the Q&A section answers all the questions you've always wanted to ask. Lavishly illustrated with line drawings and photographs, this book is for women as well as men considering the best treatment options for hair loss.

The incomplete book of hair loss answers.

If you are looking for history on what people have done since 44BC until now, and if you only wish to go the route of surgical procedures
this book will interest you.
Natural hair solutions were skimmed over so quickly I had to go back to see if I had missed something. So, if you are interested in alternative options such as diet, disease control, save a tree and don't buy this book.
The Internet is a good source too after you wade through the crap that is out there. See other hair loss books through Amazon.

This book is great at detailing the emotional aspect of psoriasis, but fails miserably when it comes to treatment options. Calling it "A Patient's Guide to Treatment" is misleading. If you are having problems handling psoriasis emotionally, this is the book for you. If you are looking for concrete medical information, The Handbook of Psoriasis by Charles Camisa would suit you better.

Booklist: "Author Speaks Wisely..."

Review Date: 2000-11-02
Psoriasis is an unpleasant, disfiguring disease, whose sufferers often hide away from life or are pushed away. Its cause is unknown, and there is no cure. It can affect people of all ages, and sufferers can die from the disease or the complications of treatment. Cram has long dealt with psoriasis patients and understands current knowledge of it and how patients and others react to it.

Stress doesn't cause it, yet reducing stress often can help in managing it, and psychological scars are usually the main problem associated with it. Cram speaks wisely about those matters, drawing on stores of his patients to show how such scars may affect all aspects of life and how they can be handled effectively.

Many HMOs will not pay for adequate care, so Cram's advice on finding a doctor is important. In addition, he describes various treatment methods, speaking especially well of psoriasis day-care centers. Self-acceptance is the major goal, he says. -William Beatty--Booklist, Sept. 15, 2000

I bought this book as a gift to my wife, but when I received it, I noticed that although it's a hardcover, and has a nice picture on the cover, and despite the price, it is not suitable for a gift. Not as a relatively special gift anyhow:
It's really thin (I don't know much about make-up, but I imagine you can't describe many techniques in 150 pages with huge type size), and the paper is rather coarse. Colors are somehow faded (pictures look rather old) and, overall, I believe the book is not truly worth the price.

Pamela Taylor's Makeup Techniques is an essential tool for anyone who enjoys the behind the scenes information of a true makeup professional. This book covers the A-Z content of all there is to know. It includes chapters on color theory and mixing, all application methods, proper brush usage, and many different ways og applying the latest makeup techniques. Also available as of Jan 2000, is Pamela Taylor's course on Video which is an exciting and colorful video featuring Taylor working on a live model. The video is excellent, and also highly recommended. See it in the video section of Amazon.

This book has wide information about chemical peeling and will be a good guide for surgeons and dermatologists.

I find the first part of this book the most helpful for me. I own a book on essential oils by Neals Yard (which is excellent by the way) but most of the information in the second half of this book is contained in the essential oil book I already own. So this book is great if you dont have any or much information on essential oils, especially by Neals Yard.

The ingredients listed inside this book are either very expensive (i.e. rose absolute) or extremely difficult to find. Also, the recipes are not that appealing or practical.

My conclusion, the Author either doesn't want to share practical recipes or is out of touch as to why a person would want to make their own products --- simple, good recipes and more importantly it doesn't break their wallet.

This book is definitely not worth buying!! There are better books out there.

Probably the best kept secret on homemade personal care products. This one is infinitely better than more expensive books I've seen. Comprehensive information, beautifully presented. Nothing trendy or trivial. Loads of easy, laboratory-tested recipes and great color photos. Very clear, step-by-step instructions on making deluxe vegetable-based cosmetics for five different skin types. Among the many topics covered: Skin, body and hair care, natural hair dyes, several types of liquid, cream and lotion bases, herbal preparations, use of essential oils, fragrancing, perfumes, toothpastes, mouthwashes and general health issues. An excellent glossary of herbs and cosmetic ingredients is included. London-based Neal's Yard Remedies deserves the loyalty of their international clientele. I wish the U.S. had a few of their wonderful shops. While you're at it, "The Bath and Body Book" by Stephanie Donaldson is a perfect companion volume. Beyond gorgeous and reasonably priced. Superb information on homemade skin care products and inexpensive ways to create some of the most luxurious bathrooms imaginable. Breathtaking color photos. Also sold by Amazon.com.

I rarely say this, but this is a book that I regret purchasing. The recipes sound interesting but many of the items I would have to order. They are generally items that I have not heard of before or are expensive essential oils. Even though I am a soap maker, the ingredients still were not what I consider to be easily accessible. I ordered other books by Janice Cox and those books were so much more enjoyable and I know I will make many of the cosmetics/facials. I found myself skipping through pages in the book by Susan Curtis because it seemed to read more like a textbook. This is a book I will not use often.
