this book doesn't include what most consumers are looking for: information on what products/ingredients to use and which ones to stay away from. The author narrowly focuses on just a few skin types, when most people have skin that falls into categories in between the usual normal, dry, oily, or combo. There's a ton of basic information on everything from skin cancer to skin care during pregnancy, though most of the chapters are very short and barely touch on the subjects before moving onto something else. Too much information on nearly every kind of skin disease/rash/etc. that exists, and only one extremely brief (and not very useful) chapter on makeup. Sidebars and the like can be helpful, but there are so many in this book that they're distracting.

I am a Dermatologist and loved this book. While I already knew most of the things in the book, it is helpful to have information to relay to patients in plain English. I have highlighted passages and written my own comments in the margins and will place copies of this book in my examination rooms for patients to read. I especially like the chapters about sun damage and the prevention of photodamage. I am glad to see in print many of the things that I have been telling patients for years, especially about the sales tactics of cosmetic companies. This book is loaded with practical advice. It does not, however, contain directions to the fountain of youth.

This book is very informative and has so much information regarding ingredients that it is not to be ignored by anyone who takes their skin problems and its general health seriously. Although it does not give lists of cosmetics and products one should choose, it rather focuses on how to go about choosing what is right for one's own particular skin care problems. This offers no quick fixes, only useful information.

I never read books at all and this opne I finished in a few hours, not kidding!! I have since updated my whole skincare routine and my skin's looking better by the minute. Thank You Marsha *round of applause!*

OK, I might buy the book. Here are my stats. I buy a lot of products at ummm author's website? Weird that I haven't seen her book there, but it probably is. I can't renember how I happened on the site. Prob looking for an answer to something. First there are other great products there besides her own.
Well, I read all the information on a life long problem I have with the scalp. I have never read such an informative and all inclusive source of information in my life!! I am in the health care profession. I could tell she knew what she was talking about. In my case bottom line was diff things work for diff people and you just have to keep trying to find the one and she named the products, not all her own and not all on the website but they had at least one kind of each thing she named ,well I trusted my instincts and ordered 2-3 diff shampoos and rinses. One of the shampoos WORKED!!! After 40+yrs I shampooed my hair and the horrible "killer" dandruff that could only be cleared up for a short length of time by huge shots of cortizone at my dematologists office and applications of liquid 3 times a day, was gone!! zitto, I was in disbelief, of course I have to use this shampoo routinely but it doestn't take much and it isn't exspensive and you don't have to use another shampoo, this one does it. One conditioner didn't break me out or cause the _(*&^ to come back and it was in a diff product line. Also a FIRST for me even though I have tried every one out there for decades, so if you don;t know whether to buy the book or not just go read the information there. he he. I think I will buy the book just so I can read it in bed. Esp since I am getting older and wanat the best for my skin which I have kept out of the sun!! I wrote this just in case there is just one person it helps!! cos it was a miracle for me!! Also as it turned out the shampoo tht worked was one of her procucts but her rinse didn't but another rinse did that was in her recommendations, remember I got them all and IT WAS WORTH IT. cost less than one Dr app. he he. Best to all.

I liked this book because it gives you an overview of so many different skin care problems, and it gave me tips about problems I didn't know I could fix. This is a good reference book to keep around, in case you get a new ailment that you need to learn about.

This book in question is a masterpi...welll not quite. It is a very basic book. THis would be a great gift for a teenager. Or it would be a quick fun read for someone who knows nothing about skin care. Just like everyother book out there written by an expert expalining to non educated people.

Do not take that offensively. It's just a very basic book. Nothing fancy. But if you know nothing about skincare you'll learn from this book. If you know the basics, then it's a quick read. Entertaining as it is written by a woman who is bubbly. She is not serious at all, just fun to read.

This book was written with the idea of promoting the author's own product line. Sad, because otherwise it is a well written book backed with a good clinical background. If you can get over her commercial intention it is an ok read.

An informative skincare encyclopedia!

Review Date: 2006-01-01
I can't give it a five, because she does plug her own products. But having a mini-encyclopedia of skin diseases and conditions is a great thing. I wish I had purchased a book like this a long time ago. I have a dermatologist, but she doesn't take the time to really explain, in plain English, what is happening and why. The Dermadoctor does that for the kind of condition that you might seek help for (acne, eczema, hair loss, psoriasis) and also for somethings that we may not immediately seek help for, such as cellulite, cold sores, chapped lips, hives, and dandruff.

This isn't a book to read front-to-back, but if you are into healthy skin, I really think this is a great book to have around the house.

Once I started writing in the Journal the effects were amazing. The daily reports motivated me to stay on the program and the results, noticable with every passing day have been wonderful. I've lost weight, feel great but best of all feel in control. I can honestly say that Dr. Perricone has changed my life for the better.

It hasn't been clinically proven that Perricone skin products work. My mom (age 46) tried them anyway, and they didn't work.

His advice to stay away from grains (and whatever comes from them, of course) is great, but not new. Yes, farm-raised salmon is screwed up, eat the wild one, but again, I knew that already.

And I disagree with his complicated "system" of taking supplements. If you just eat normal food, like vegetables and fruit, NOT grains and soda, you won't need supplements. The only supplement you need is fish oil, since farm-raised animals that we eat lack necessary fatty acids.

The Perricone Prescription Journal is the best tool I have ever used for a nutritional program and it has become as essential to my day as my home keys!! Not only can I follow a daily menu at a glance, but I can keep track of my progress as far as skin and body condition: (my weight, of course but important details too like my pore size and my stress level) as well as jot down my impressions and my feelings every day! Plus I love the fact that the book is light weight and spiral-bound. Extremely handy, full of zen-like sensible advice, I recommend it to anyone with a will to win the anti-aging battle!

His advice is so logical and easy to follow it was no wonder I shed weight and felt great, not to mention looking younger, too! His menu plan and anti-aging research is not to miss! The journal was such a helpful tool to follow my progress. That is why I have previously given up on other diet plans. This was easy to follow and successful, too! Thanks Dr. Perricone!

i bought this product thinking that it is the 6th edition since that is what i searched through amazon advanced search. once i recieved this product i realized it was the 4th edition. I mean the picture on the hardcover didn't even match. That is false advertisement according to ralph nader, and the BBB. I then returned the product to the seller, who took the product back, but had the nerve to say that 4th edition was clearly written on the delivery slip as well as the online product info., which was obviously not true. I didn't react because i just wanted my money back. Then I got charged for binding damage on the book, which had it before I even touched it. I then realized that I would never buy from amazon, but from Barnes and nobles, and bargains from ebay, and I did. I bought the 6th edition from barnes and nobles. It cames faster than amazon, and was brand new, and perfect. Caveat emptor!!!!!!!( buyer beware)

while some referred to this book as "burn it and leave it," they were the one's who'd like to sworn in by contanzo in court. our physio dept required this book, but most people stuck with constanzo and in the end they were the smart ones. berne and levy gives great descriptions, but should be used as a reference book, you cant read through this book like you might be able to do with constanzo. in the end, i'd stick with costanzo if i were you.

Good...but not the best.

This Physiology text is a great book for those studying mid and upper level human physiology. It has a very organized way of introducing the material and covers the topics well. Additionally, it makes good use of many clear cartoon illustrations of hard to memorize pathways and difficult to understand concepts.

That being said, the book lacks the detail that a medical or research physiologist would want to have. I have taken several physiology courses as both an undergraduate and graduate student and have found this text to be lacking when compared to that of Boron and Boulpaep. It doesn't cover the receptors in nearly as much detail, and many pathways are simply mentioned and never explained. If you really want to know what is going on, you would have to supplement this text (or to a degree any text) with a review of current journal materials.

I enjoyed the book very much. It was very helpful. I loved the herbal remedies and the ingredients were all very inexpensive. I didn't care too much for the shampoo, it made my hair feel filmy and weighed down. But everything else was wonderful. I would recommend it to anyone who cherishes their hair.

The recipes are wonderful and have definately improved the health of my hair and scalp! A warning however: it takes some time to make your own shampoos, rinses, etc. and also to find all the natural herbal ingredients unless you live next to a health store, so be prepared to devote some time to hair care.

I cannot really say that my hair is thinning less (it doesn't seem any thicker), but I love the way my hair feels and looks and so I intend to keep using the recipes.

The book was also very easy to read and follow. I just felt that for women with long hair, a bit more of the oils, shampoos, rinses, etc. may be appropriate.

It got me heading in the right direction...

I spent $200 on all the ingredients, tools, jars, etc to make the products. The nightly treatment has an odor that stinks to high heaven. It's very time-consuming and messy to make the products and to use them. Some items need to be stored in the fridge and for the 7 weeks I stuck with it, the inconvenience became more and more intolerable.

However, using the organic natural products improved the health of my scalp. My hair wasn't falling out in clumps anymore. It made me realize over-the-counter brands as well as expensive salon brands were bad for my hair and scalp. I started using a product called "Super Hair Energizer" which was developed using similar theories of hair loss that Riquette proposes in her book. Now my hair is growing back and is shinier than it's been in years and my scalp no longer itches. You can buy "Super Hair Energizer" on the internet.

I was very disappointed with this book. As the other reviewers mentioned, the treatments are expensive to buy, complicated to make, and it stinks. And after all that hassle, I'M STILL BALD!

I started to see thinning of my hair a few hairs(years) ago....so after much research on the internet I bought this book and I bought everything that Riquette recommends..The oils, shampoo, vodka, aspirin, alka selzters, everything was priced at about $150.00. If you go to Whole Foods you can buy the oils and shampoo for reasonable prices..get the basic oils....generic.

THE RESULTS: After the first week or so I saw improvement in my hair texture. After first month I saw more thickness. After about three months I did see hair growth AND continued hair thickness. I think the stimulator oils and the slougher cocktail are the KEY ingredients..Just get the rosemary, almond, basil oils..forget the rest of the oils save your money! The reason I am telling you this is because rosemary promotes circulation of the scalp..and I have read many books on hair loss that promote rosemary, basil, and almond oils to promote circulation..look at the books Nutrition for Dummies and also The Bald Truth. Definitely get the flaxseed volumizer..and use that in place of your gel and hairspray..this keeps the scalp clean and adds thickness to the hair! As for the shampoo...skip it...it is too messy and too much of a hassle to make the shampoo..however if you want the best results then use the shampoos..but remember the KEY Ingredients are the basic oils(rosemary, basil, and almond oils) and the slougher cocktail. As for the shampoo and those of us who are on a tight budget...Just use plain ordinary IVORY SOAP to wash your hair with..a friend who has thick hair swears by ivory soap in making her hair thicker..im a male I have tryed it and I like it..it is 99.9 % percent pure and it seems to be working very well. It definetly adds thickness ..as far as hair growth ..probably not..I have tryed other organic shampoos with good results but they are expensive as hell..sometimes I switch back and forth using organic shampoos and ivory soap ..JUST MAKE SURE SHAMPOO IS herbal or organic or FREE OF CHEMICALS thats all you have to remember to keep your scalp clean..also you can try a product called super hair energizer..it is at superhairenergizer.net..it works well..but again it is expensive to me..10 dollars a bottle and thats not including the other products you have to use.

THE GOOD NEWS: The product works! I have tryed many many other hair growth products with much less success. Also other testimonials indicated they had good results too...The author had very very thick hair on the cover of the book. Even in the regular photos of her she has thick hair..she claims to use products and it worked for her..and it certainly worked for me and worked for others..give it a try.

THE BAD NEWS: The rosemary and basil oils which are the stimulators stink pretty bad. I have asthma so I had breathing problems from these two oils just becsuse the aroma was so strong..if you dont have asthma then you should be fine if you can tolerate the smell. The price is moderate but in the long run you save money.. Other bad news if you want hair you have to work for it..that means mixing and making products and living with the smell and hoping your spouse can tolerate it at night..the products can get messy too. Good Luck to you and I hope you grow a thick crown. (...)

I have just finished the nail tech course in my state using this book. Sadly, for being the standard textbook in the industry, the book is riddled with typos and mistakes.
They commonly say things like "course abrasive" instead of "coarse" and the review questions leave a lot to be desired. By finding an older edition I learned that some terminology has changed so you learn one term in a section, but the old term is used in the review questions. Good luck answering the questions when you don't understand what they are talking about!
Worse, your instructor will use the tests provided and I have had to have my grades adjusted repeatedly due to errors on the tests. More often than not, you will have questions that have nothing to do with what you have learned only to find they are questions from the Cosmetology text and not the Nail Tech book.
Overall, hope for a good instructor who catches these errors and will adjust the curriculum accordingly or you may have problems later.

I have taught for years and have been impressed by Milady's dedication to the Industry, until now. This new text book was headed in the right direction, with the addition of some fantastic photos for nail diseases, but it missed it's usual high standards drastically. The chapters, especially those most important to the foundation of education, such as sanitation issues and safety issues towards clients, fall far too short. A school is intended to give the basis of a long and safe career in this industry, yet this book irresponsibley dedicated more time to air brushing (which is difficult at best to learn via a book) then it did to the fundamentals of salon safety for both the tech and the client. I am very very disappointed. The chapters seem to be started off in the right direction, then are seemingly cut severly short. The book is choppy and incomplete at best. Sad to see such unprofessional results from a long time industry leader who has continually been the one who set the standards and raised the bar.

It is nice that we finally have an updated book...

I felt that the book was basically the same as the previous edition, with the exception of aromatherapy, and electric filing. Unfortionatly no one book can give all of the information that is required about a subject. That is what teaching is all about. I generally supplement the material from other books, and Florida law so our students stay on the right path. Over all I would have to say that this book was above average, and addressed many of the changes in the industry to date.

I bought this book for my derm rotations, and I can't say the relatively high price is justified. It represents your typical blueprints book...very general info, nothing specific, leaves you wanting more. It fits in your coat pocket, but I can go days without pulling it out to use it. Some of the pictures are good, but there aren't nearly enough, with the vast majority of the conditions going pictureless.

My advice is to pay a little more and purchase the baby Fitzpatrick's color atlas & synopsis of dermatology. It packs a greater punch, has as much (or more) information and way more conditions.

Hey here, Patriarch there. Ummm...that's not right. Whatever. I've got to hurry up and review this book!!! Women's hair health is at stake. On with the show!

OK gals. I've really got a lot of good info for you and this book does to. Did you know a woman's hair is supposed to be about down to her mid-back?! Yep, if you've ever seen a healthy newborn baby girl, you'll notice that her hair is this length. And no matter what you do to it, cut it with scissors, burn it with fire, shave it with a razor, as long as the girl is healthy, the hair will almost immediately grow right back! If your daughter is born and she is bald or has very little hair then she is VERY ILL. And needs the doctor's medical attention. Now if you look at most women today, their hair is about shoulder-length. This means they are pretty healthy. They probably just aren't eating right. Also, they could be eating very well and not be getting the vitamins they need due to all the chemicals and crap farmers put in our foods. Go organic and do your hair a favor. Now when a women gets a horrible disease like cancer, it is not uncommon for her to lose her hair completely. This means she will die soon. That's pretty sad.

Take a look at America's History of women's hair
1910s- very long hair, women were very healthy.
1920s-chin length hair, women were very sickly because they spend all their time doing the Charleston
1930s-still about chin length. The Great Depression caused women to be sickly
1940s-WWII helped strengthen America and American's hair. It was about shoulder length.
1950s-fall out from nuclear fission caused some women to be ill. Hair ranged from shoulder length to chin length. Some healthy girls had longer hair of course.
1960s-The hippies lived a very organic lifestyle, therefore women finally were very healthy and had hair that was about mid-back as they are supposed to.
1970s- Women were still very healthy. The hippie culture had caught on.
1980s- Reagan's trickle down economics screwed up a lot of women's health therefore hair can be seen as all different lengths. There were some women who were very unhealthy and had boy length hair.
1990s-Very similar to the 80s. Clinton did just as poorly as Reagan so there were a lot of unhealthy women.
2000-Women are healthy due to the organic health craze, but due to, as previously stated, all the chemicals and stuff we are still consuming, women are not as healthy as they should be. There is also a strange disease going around that causes their hair to be long and short at the same time! It's like all different lengths, and colours too.

So it looks like things are getting better for women's health, but things could get better. Read this book and other important health-food books gals and you will see your hair will become the proper length in no time.

This book is just a republished version of his 1995 book "Hair: An Owner's Handbook" I was upset when I received this book because I already own the 1995 version. I returned it at once.

A very helpful book. A ton of information packed into a small book. It not only explains natural treatment options, but how drug solutions work as well. Everything is explained straight and to the point. It would be a very helpful book for people just starting to experience hair loss.

Peters shows balding is part of a bigger health problem.

Hair Loss Prevention shows that male pattern baldness and prostate problems are linked and that the vitamin, mineral, and fatty acid regimen which helps one is good for the other too, as well as for the condition of the skin (so women, too, can benefit from reading this book). It's excellent for immediate protective care of the hair (advice on shampoos, conditioners, brushing, etc.) as well as a long term healthy diet which should stop more hair loss.

Very outdated material

This book is very outdated in content and is of little use to present day hair loss sufferers. Don't waste the money on it like I did. You're better off reading a more thorough and accurate book. I personally found author Daniel Lawrence's new book on hair loss gave me the most up to date information on current treatments.
