This book is written by an American author Pamela Hill; a foremost authority in medical aesthetics who was a former nurse. As such; the emphasis of this book is thoroughly grounded in medical aesthetics. An extensive coverage of the fundamentals of skin care affords the therapist an understanding of how the prior application of cosmetics can affect the application of Microdermabrasion. All the main anti-ageing and `cosmeceutical' ingredients are covered in depth. An extensive chapter also covers the indications and contraindications of Microdermabrasion treatments. Treatment procedures are covered expansively with a prominence placed upon identifying safe treatment protocols and practices. As a lecturer in Beauty Therapy it is hoped that this book will aid in standardising Microdermabrasion treatments in the U.K. as this is a treatment that still has many treatment variables. During the study of my BA (Hons) Degree in Beauty Therapy Management course this book was extremely useful for my dissertation research too; purely because it provided such a comprehensive account of this popular salon treatment.

I am the author - a struggling research scientist - please buy my book! Seriously this book is about a new field of scientific research - sunscreen photobiology - what is that? Photobiology is the science of the effect of light on living matter. In this book experts describe the effects of sun light (natural and artificial) on sunscreens as well as the effects of the light that penetrates sunscreen protected skin and reaches the underlying cells (after after all sunscreens are not concrete blocks!)

My wife has Scleroderma, and prior to starting this treatment could barely get out of the bed. After close to a year on the antibiotic treatment, she is doing much better. Some of the stories in the book can be a bit scary for someone recently diagnosed with Scleroderma, but the book is definitely worth the money and could change your life. Also, look at www.arthritistrust.org and roadback.org.

This book is a life-saver!

I admit I was skeptical at first, but after reading the book, reading the testimonials on the Road Back Foundation's website (www.roadback.org) and looking in PubMed for research that supports Dr. Brown's theory and antibiotic therapy approach, I decided to give it a trial period of 11 months. It's now been 13 months and I am better. This holiday I'm thankful to Henry Scammell for writing this book and the Road Back for educating us through the website; I figured that nobody could make up ALL those testimonials. Soon, I hope to post my own story.

This book is a testament to those who have chosen a different path to treating this terrible disease, a testament to those who do not blindly accept the advice of rheumatologists trained to prescribe toxic drugs that don't cure the disease but do guarantee return visits and a lifetime of costly lab work.

Thomas Brown had the intellect to discover the truth about rheumatic diseases and the moral courage to live his beliefs. Ask your rheumatologist how many of his/her patients have created a charitable organization in honor of one of his/her treatments.

This book has the answer to this disease. It has saved my life, my immune system, and my sanity.

My 25 year old son was diagnosed with diffuse systemic scleroderma. I turned to Amazon to find something to read about the disease, to educate me about what he would face given this diagnosis. I read a book written by a scleroderma patient who was severely ill with the disease and receiving the "conventional" treatments recommended by rheumatologists and promoted by the pharmaceutical industry. It was quite depressing to say the least. My son, being a knowledgeable biologist, refused such treatments. Thanks to Amazon, 6 weeks later, I received an e-mail suggesting that I may be interested in reading Scleroderma: The Proven Therapy that Can Save Your Life by Henry Scammell. Within days, I contacted representatives from the Roadback Foundation mentioned in the book, was given a physician's name to contact and my son began treatment with the antibiotic protocol. This is not a treatment you will see advertised in every magazine. It's been around and available for use for many years, it's safe, effective, inexpensive and it works for the vast majority of patients suffering and being needlessly debilitated from the diseases of not only Scleroderma, but Lupus and Rheumatoid Arthritis. Dr. Thomas McPherson Brown successfully treated thousands of patients and attempted to get the word out about this effective treatment for over 50 years, but as his patients' recovery was "anecdotal" and not scientifically proven, it was not accepted by the scientific community. Why would you not try a treatment that bears little risk and works? To every parent and patient who has had one of these diagnoses handed to them, read this book, turn to people who can help and get your life back. As a nurse of 30 years who has administered disease modifying drugs to many patients, I am very grateful to Amazon, Henry Scammell and the Road Back Foundation for letting me know of safer, more effective options. To the reviewers who fault this book as promoting a foundation, may you or a loved one never be personally affected by one of these diseases. The information that this book and the foundation provides might save your life!

Kudos to Dr. Taylor for her personal achievements, but that does not compensate for the mediocrity that is "Brown Skin". At times it reads like a bland encyclopedia of skin issues and other times like contradictory medical tripe. Reading this book only left me more frustrated at the dearth of good in-depth skin/hair care advice for people of color. Even more frustrating, I emailed her people asking for the ingredient list for her product line. They wouldn't give me a straight answer. Instead they just repeated verbatim the advertisement from the website.

Bottomline: If you know absolutely nothing about hair/skin then this book will be great for you, otherwise pass.

A must read for women of color

This book answered so many questions I have had about my skin. Things I never remember to ask a doctor and other things I have asked that they had no answers for me. Maybe it's because often times I represent a minority of their clientele so they don't care to or haven't taken the time to know. This book should serve you as a reference book, one you will turn to from time to time and one you will want to give to the women in your life. Your daughters, your mom and others. Thank you Dr. Taylor for being so thorough.

After seeing a dermatologist, an allergist, and two estheticians for my "adult onset acne" and spending way too much money but getting no results, I bought this book. The three day plan noticeably cleared up my skin and I'm continuing with a modified version with fantastic results. I'm a believer in the diet-skin connection and so happy I purchased this book! Plus, I'm feeling healthier and more confident, all the way around. :)

For someone already obsessed with their complexion, finding ways to control their life through a complete change of diet is probably not the healthiest method.

For me, I found that my skin finally cleared up on its own once I started accepting myself for who I am and for the skin that I am in during this instance.

I did notice that my skin appeared a bit better while eating these foods, but I would really urge people to enjoy life and not become obsessed with their skin to the point where they feel the need to control everything they eat.

Great book! But get the supplements for less...

I think the biggest complaint or criticism of Dr. Perricone's recommendations is the excessive cost of supplements and creams. With regard to the supplements, Dr. Perricone gives recommendations on the vitamins and supplements you should take. I spent some time looking at all the ingredients listed and realized that you can get those same supplements, vitamins, and minerals at your local health food / vitamin store (GNC carries a lot of them (get DMAE here) and so does Trader Joe's (you can get the Complete EFA (essential fatty acids), Alpha Lipoic Acid, but does not have DMAE), and Costco (good price for CoEnzyme Q10)! The prices are much more reasonable. (In fact, on the nvperricone website, the vitamin packets list all the ingredients and the amount of product included in the packets. In his book, he makes dosage recommendations too.) I hope this helps.

I used to have acne scars, zits and skin that was showing signs of aging. I used the perricone program for a while and did like have some positive results. But then after hearing about Microdermx on beauty forums, I tried it and the Microdermx has completely changed my bad skin into skin that I looks beautiful to me. I have about 85% less acne scars, no acne, and my skin is firmer with a glow. The price is better too than say Dr. Brandts.

His skin products don't work. His diet isn't new (and imperfect)

It hasn't been clinically proven that Perricone skin products work. My mom (age 46) tried them anyway, and they didn't work.

His advice to stay away from grains (and whatever comes from them, of course) is great, but not new. Yes, farm-raised salmon is screwed up, eat the wild one, but again, I knew that already.

And I disagree with his complicated "system" of taking supplements. If you just eat normal food, like vegetables and fruit, NOT grains and soda, you won't need supplements. The only supplement you need is fish oil, since farm-raised animals that we eat lack necessary fatty acids.

I Am Now Eczema-Free! 50 Stars!!!
Helpful Votes: 16 out of 23 total.
Review Date: 2006-04-29
I'd give this book 50 stars if I could... I was going through two large tubes of prescription medication (one immunosuppressant and one corticosteroid) every month until I read this. Now I don't need them at all! Dr. Nasir teaches dermatology at Duke University, and he explains the physiology of eczema and how the skin's barrier function is compromised. This led me to take his discussion of moisturizers seriously and I realized that the one I was using may not have been "thick" enough for my skin. So I pulled out an old container of one that I'd shelved 2 years ago because it felt too greasy and consistently applied it for two weeks and poof, no more eczema! And, BTW, my skin soaks it up in 10-15 minutes so greasiness is not really an issue. I won't mention the brand name here because I'm not sure that I'm allowed to. Also, different brands will work better for different people given that eczema is the result of the effects of about 20 genes. And if the moisturizers that you can find in any drug store won't work, Dr. Nasir recommends one that's more expensive, but available without a prescription that he says is the best moisturizer on the market today. I didn't have to go that far. Bottom line: THANK YOU DR. NASIR! AND ANYONE WITH ECZEMA, BUY THIS BOOK!

I've had eczema since I was born. At times in my life it has become severe and others it has been calmer, but reguardless always there. There really is no "eczema free", so I wish the title was not so misleading. Anyone who has had eczema for many years knows that it is and will always be a problem for them. Worring about what fabrics your wearing, making sure that everything you use is fragrance free for sensitive skin, not being able to truly ever enjoy a shower or bath or swimming, yes and worring about what you eat and drink for me its no acids or wheat, and spending thousands of dollars on dermatologists and creams and lotions and the list goes on and on...
I dont believe that most of the medicines a dematogist gives you work. I've tried many oral steroids (which leads to weight gain and a quick fix that doesnt last long), steroid and cortizone creams(which are costly and after years of using no longer work and simply leave scars),Even the all natural creams have not worked for me.Recently I even resorted to try a medicine that significantly lower your immune system. Horrible mistake! Sure my skin got better for a little while but I had a vast of other problems that occured shortly following this medicine and eventually my skin of course worsened. I started having terrible bladder problems, lumps in my [...] that had to be removed, fatigue, staff infections that turned into mrsa, all of which I accredit to the lower immune system from the medication.
So to all of you suffering from eczema or dermititis please be aware that there is no ecezma free for life as this book states, as great as that may sound. Please just be aware of that if purchasing this book. Although could be somewhat helpful if new to eczema stress makes eczema worse, and soap does irritate the skin. It is impossible to stop scratching so please understand that if you are around someone with eczema do not nag them about scratching it makes them scratch more, trust me! Please be careful when going to a dermatologist you may waste money on a quick fix that wont last, which seems like what this book offers. Try changing your diet ultimately if you have eczema you also have many allergies try not eating wheat and watching how much acid you consume. If someone has a cure let me know but this book is not it.

This book could more aptly be named `What We Think We Know About Eczema & Some Things That Might Help You'. There is some interesting information however this is just another doctor who thinks an Eczema rash is CAUSED by scratching. Those of you that have Eczema know that while scratching makes it worse, the bumps or rash itself comes first.

While I did find a number of his suggestions worth trying [such as washing with oatmeal rather than soap & eliminating B-complex] I found some completely insane like taking a bath in diluted Clorox!

The book is worth reading if you don't know much about Eczema but I caution parents to do further research by talking to someone that HAS Eczema. Some of these ideas can make your child's rash much worse. And the ever present push from western medicine doctors to give you cortisone, then when it doesn't work - stronger cortisone, just hasn't helped me at all - not to mention the side effects & potential birth defects it can cause.

I also don't agree that Eczema has nothing to do with what you eat. There is a lot of information out there about the benefits of Essential Fatty Acids [Omega 3.6.9] to those with eczema. This has been a far more helpful to me & my infant son. You might also want to consider allergy tests. [There are also foods that are irritants that you may need to hold off on during a flare up.] When your system is stressed common sense tells you that it all has something to do with why your Eczema is flaring. Remember Eczema is a symtom not the problem.

The best book I have read on eczema is:
Superimmunity for Kids : What to Feed Your Children to Keep Them Healthy Now, and Prevent Disease in Their Future (Paperback)
by Leo Galland, Dian Dincin Buchman
Superimmunity for Kids is a much better book for adults or children with eczema. After reading the Superimmunity book I wanted to lower the number of stars I gave for this review but it wouldn't let me.

I am truly grateful for the gift that Dr.Ping Zhang has bestowed upon her readership through her comprehensive research spanning thousands of years of eastern medicine. The concept of self healing in an integrative fashion allowing for the optimizing of the mind body soul connection is reflected in the pages of this book. The information is referenced in such a way that one can learn and apply principles of nutrition, qi gong, including self massage, conscious movement, and breath work, with direction and focus to produce a feeling of well being and synchrony. One can experience the compassion, knowledge base, and dignity of this practitioner as the fuel to motivate the practice of the principles that are referenced. My patients and I have borne witness to the dedication, and comprehensive care and dedication that direct both her practice and her writing.

This book is way too complicated for a regular person. Some of the items mentioned to either eat or use for an anti-wrinkle treatments (such as pigs feet or different fungi) are things that I would never use. I think the only way you could achieve most of these things is by purchasing her Nefeli cosmetic line, which is not cheap. The accupressure points are also very confusing. I would not have purchased this had I known this.

TCM=Traditional Chinese Medicine and it works! Accupressure really helps my skin glow, amazing. (Just a couple of days of doing the accupressure exercises, I began receiving compliments like, "you're skin has a beautiful texture, what have you been doing?")

My qualms with the book? What do you think of using a Pig's Foot Mask on your face? That's right, the book talks of boiling and cutting a pigs foot which, refrigerated, you're supposed to apply to your face over night!

Eating Bone Soup is also suggested in this book. Eating meat and/or killing animals just so I can look good just doesn't sound right.

Besides, boiled bones to fight wrinkles? Staying away from meat is best. Meat has fats and these days hormones and chemicals that are bad for the skin, let alone everything else in the body. Insted, eat fruits and vegetables (drink lots of water too) and make your skin look gorgeous.
