I was privileged to be Bryon's 2nd grade teacher and saw first hand EB at it's worst. Bryon took everything in stride as if it was an everyday occurance. He was protected by all the members of his class and they always pushed him to participate whether it was baseball, basketball or any other game that normal kids played. He was an inspiration to me and I did have the book which was autographed by Bryon and Lillian, but loaned it out to someone and it was never returned. If anyone knows of one I could buy to remember the story and remember a child that was such a blessing to me and all who came in contact with him. I am now a pediatric RN and have taken care of 3 children with EB and none of them were as bad as Bryon was when I knew him. I have heard in later years that the family had found somewhat of a cure for him and the last I heard he was in high school playing soccer. What a wonderful account of the LOVE OF GOD demonstrated in spite of all the pain!

Here's a biography of faith that will make your heart glad..

"The heartwarming story of a small boy's rare courage and struggle with a rare skin disease that has caused pain and suffering for Bryon since birth. His story of strong faith in God's love is a lesson for all of us. His cheerful disposition is a tremendous contrast to the severity of his condition. When you read this story, you will realize that in the midst of sorrow, God alone can draw the sting out of every trouble and take the bitterness from every affliction." This is a wonderful book and you will be touched by it's story and how it will change your own outlook on life.

Bryon has Recessive Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa... the same exact condition my son has. RDEB is a rare skin disorder where the skin is so fragile a minimum scratch causes 2nd degree burn-like wounds, it is a devastating condition with no cure that does not improve with age.
In this book Lillian describes in detail her life with Bryon from birth and beyond. It was a tough book to read because of the vivid images it brought to me, but a must to read for any EB parent and their loved ones.

Yikes- Lice is a fantastic read for both children and adults! Author Donna Caffey wonderfully explains the lice epidemic in a well written rhyming children's book. I would personally recommend school nurses across the nation to include this book on their shelves.

Caffey should be encouraged to write more books on changeling subjects for children.

This book should be on every students school supply list. When our daughter came home from school with lice I was as horrified as she was. This book explains these naughty little creatures at a level we all can understand. Makes for enlightening reading on such an unenlightening subject.

Perhaps the Right Choice for Younger Children - a review of "Yikes-Lice!"

This book covers the basic material about lice - size, means of transmission, what's needed to get rid of them - in a fashion suitable for even very young children. One of the ways it does this is by using drawings instead of photographs. Photos tending to be scarier for the really young as lice are sort of monstrous when greatly magnified.

The other thing that the author does is to provide two different textual approaches to the information. The first is normal prose, and the second is a rhyme. For really young children I think I would talk about what the pictures showed, and use only the rhyme on repeat readings.

Three Stars [C+]. Cute, colorful and non-threatening, this book covers the basics but wouldn't be a great resource for an "advanced" book report on the topic of lice.

The Accelerated Reading designation/ATOS is 4.3 for this book.

My two girls loved this book. My 4-year-old really enjoyed looking at her skin under the magnifying glass.

Have fun observing.

My five year old is intrigued by this book. Although the book suggests using a magnifying glass to do so, the observations it asks the reader to make can largely be done by the eye. I read it to him at night and, lying in bed, he and I look at our own skins and spot the similarities and differences in a gentle game of observation. It encourages the act of looking at the familiar with a new and curious eye. And the information it gives is solid and uncondescending.

Your Skin and Mine

Detailed explanations on the two layers of skin and feeling your skin. Your Skin and Mine centers around four kids, Mary, Henry, Mark and the other one is a boy who is telling the story and never offers his own name for the reader to learn. On page 24 they go into detail on melanin, which is grains of color to protect the body from the sun. He states that Mark's skin makes a lot of this while Henry and Mary's skin does not. There is no explanation on how he knows this or why it is different.

He has freckles on his skin and in the summer his skin does not make enough of melanin so he needs to rub on lotion. It is explained that darker skin can get burned by the sun so all should wear sunscreen. Mary and Henry have light brown skin and Mark has dark brown. This boy with freckles is the only one to have white skin.

This little boy and his sister helped their Mother clean the attic while wearing their bathing suits. This seemed funny to my son and he wondered why the boy was not wearing a shirt and the girl almost knocked over a lamp while chasing a spider with the broom. It must have been summer time since the siblings went outside to hose off the dirt from cleaning. He said his Mother thought this was easier than washing more dirty clothes. This is one idea I wish that was not in the book, as my son will want to do this as well. The last page has the kids cooling off with lemonade explaining how they were cool on the inside and out.

My son did not agree with the toenails and hair cuts not hurting, he did not learn why his fingers get wrinkled and funny looking after taking a bath. Just the past two days we had a new worker in our house and he was full of questions for her as her skin is darker than ours. He wanted to know why her feet were dark, her hair was another shade, how she did the braids and what happened to her nails since they were red. Then he wanted to know about the things in her ears and if they hurt. I still have a need for a book that will help explain differences to my son as this did not really touch upon that aspect. Your Skin and Mine is a nice book but goes off in directions that are of no interest for us at this present time. It would help to know the name of the fourth child and it was not suggested to wear sun glasses, and my son keeps his in his backpack.

This atlas is just a collection of 3,000 average to good clinical pictures. There is an interesting differential diagnosis section in which a list of diseases considered a close differential diagnosis is given for each disease. The theory part the definitions / information is too brief, the online links are however pretty useful.

This book is covers a very concise and clear area of Pediatric Dermatology. The index is easy to use and photographs are clear. It should be a very useful reference book for any busy pediatric practice or for those pediatric residents studying for the Pediatric Boards.

The best thing about this book is the differential diagnosis found inside the front and back covers. Determine the type of lesion you are looking at (vessicular, papular, etc) and it gives you a good differential subdivided by age. In my mind, a must have for a busy clinic or teaching program, in addition to Hurwitz. Weakness is somewhat superficial on treatment.

There are so many people who say there is nothing you can do, but after reading this book I feel there is some hope. Contains many suggestions, and gives several areas and methods of modification. Didn't suit my personal needs for the present, because I have a breastfed baby w/ the condition, but will work for us in the future I'm sure.

Superb theoretical and practical book about valid approaches

This slim volume provides a succinct and thorough exposition of the nutritional aspects of both ameliorating and curing these two skin disorders (which are not really skin disorders at all). In plain, very straightforward language, Terrass outlines the causes and cures of these pesky skin outbreaks. You may be surprised at the small size of the book, but the cogency of the information contained within makes it a non-pareil, and a sine-qua-non of healing.

This is not a book written by an amateur with a success story. Rather, Terrass is a professional with a relevant (nutritionist) background, making his knowledge available to you. He correctly explains the flawed nature of conventional approaches to these two "skin" disorders, and outlines the theory and practice of real healing. There is only one omission I can think of. There is no discussion of the important cleansing subjects discussed by Pagano and Jensen. This book focuses instead on the chemical aspects, and sets forth a case for specific dietary supplements and alterations.

I just got this book mailed to me and I guess I should have checked how many pages the book has. But yes it only has 43 pages and it is 27 dollars!! The pictures are incredible and I haven't started reading it so I don't know how the information is but this is just a warning for you that the book is not as thick as all.

Every professional who works (or wishes to work) on R&D should carry this book wherever he goes! It contains just everything we need to know about cosmetic science and technology. And particularly it has a specific part of it dedicated to product testing and regulatory matters. Save yourself from a hundred of heavy and useless books just because 2 or 10 pages of them are important. Buy this one: it is almost complete and 'carriable'.

Too Comprehensive?

Review Date: 2008-12-23
This is an excellent comprehensive and beautifully illustrated pediatric dermatology tome. As such, it should be particularly useful to specialists in this area. As for value to the primary care provider, it may be a bit much. I like to maintain a library of various pediatric subspecialty texts in addition to the standard Nelson Textbook of Pediatrics. Given so many areas to cover, I like to keep these in a price range not much north of $100, and preferably under that. So, while this is a superb text, my preference as a primary care provider is for Weston's Color Textbook of Pediatric Dermatology. It is organized well, illustrated nicely, and priced better. It is also sufficient for all primary care needs. If it's not in there, it merits a dermatology referral.

I bought this book since a University offered me a Molecular Medicine postgraduate class. The truth is I find the book too basic, but I gave it four stars because even though It's simple, It has a very good order and few but very well searched examples. It is a very good choice for somebody willing to have a first approximation with molecular medicine; for somebody with background in the subject I don't recommend it.
