This is a very good dictionary to have on hand. I would recommend this book for everyone! It has a section in the front so that you under stand the skin, skin types & conditions, skin physiology, and product penetration. It has every ingredient for a-z. It is just a great, handy tool to have around to better help you and clients with the skin and products.

I found this book to be some what out dated. There were alot of ingredients that where not listed in this book and some our quite common when working with skin care products. It seemed to have some but not all of whats in your cosmetics so I did not find it to be very useful at all. Its on a shelf at home and not at work where it was intended to be.

The book was recommended to me and turned out to be as good as promised. An excellent resource for a basic, easy-to-understand-by-a-lay-person description of scleroderma, including its symptoms, variations, possible treatments, what to expect. My daughter was recently diagnosed with the disease and our family is gathering as much as information as possible to know what it is and how deal with it.

Some books about scleroderma are clearly written with the medical community in mind and are way to technical for the average person. This book is directed to the average person and wrote in a way that can be easily understood by those who do not have medical experience. I highly recommend this book to every person with scleroderma and to ever person that is interested in learning the facts about this disease. Get your copy today!

I even recommended this to my Docter to tell his other patients about. This is a must for everyone diagnosed and family alike.

I saw Jeanette on Fox news, and she looked so radiant, I just had to buy her book. I love it! It is so informtive! I have learned how important the PH balanace is in our bodies, and the great thing is.... it's so simple! You make a green drink with a couple of supplements and that's about it. Now I eat fruit for the PH alkaline effect, instead of the nutritional value. Jeanette made me feel like their is hope, to put the glow back into my skin, and feel healthy again. It is so easy, and honestly there are no big changes. A good way to lose weight without realizing it because the green drink has a very cleansing effect on our body. She explains it all in her book, and very well written for interest. Don't hesitate, it is well worth the money! Lynne Hansen

Dr. Graf has been my dermatologist for many years. She is not only a dermatologist, but a doctor who takes your whole life into consideration and uses her scientific knowledge to help you. I was going through some "scary" health issues that none of my doctors could figure out. Dr. Graf took the "puzzle" of my life, put it together and found that the serious problem was in fact not serious, but something that could be fixed with concentrating on body wellness and healthy living. I have never felt better. It is only fitting that she write this book to reach out to others who don't have the luxury of coming to her practice. She is a true gem and a healer.

Dr. Graf has written a great book on how to look your best! I'm not sure it really "erases 5 years overnight," but I have been using the alkalinizing cocktail, fiber powder and probiotic supplement she recommends for a couple weeks now, and there's no question my skin looks better. What's more, I have more energy than usual, and there's a strange side-effect...when you wake up in the morning, your mouth tastes good (or mine does anyway). Not sure if that has something to do with making your body less acidic and more alkaline, but it's a nice plus!

Anyway, I enjoyed reading the book and have found that her recommendations on supplements are spot on. (I haven't tried the skin care products she recommends, so I can't attest to those.)

I would highly recommend the book to any woman wanting to slow down the aging process....or just look and feel her best!

This has been an official publication of the arthritis foundation, offering guidelines and a concise, though complete overview on the rheumatic diseases and its approach. This new edition offers a more attractive text to be studied, printed with special paper and colour photos, missing only specific chapters about the drugs used in Rheumatology. Still a great book as well as a reliable source of information for those engaged in the treatment of the rheumatic patients

In medical school, rheumatology is one of those subjects that most medical students cannot really conceptualize and end up memorizing a list of autoimmune diseases along with their specific antibodies. This book has the potential to change this view.
I read this book while doing a Rheumatology rotation during my senior year and at the time it was considered the Rheumatology Bible by the attendings. For me, this book has been the best place to understand both the biological basis of rheumatic diseases and the clinical application of that knowledge.
This book is for anyone who is interested in understanding Rheumatic Diseases on a deeper level. I think such understanding is essential to any internist regardless of what his or her subspeciality is.

Embellished with colourful figures and tables, this "Primer on the Rheumatic Diseases" handled general rheumatology in way that would appeal to both clinicians and students. Its practical orientation include the diagnosis and management of all sorts of rheumatic disorders.
It familiarizes its reader with the different patterns of disease progression, before offering diagnostic and therapeutic options. It is a fine book, whose coverage of physiotherapy and pain assessment are more than satisfactory.

...getting too long. This was one of the most useful little books a med student could hope for, a really concise look into a single subject area. I used it for my 4th year elective, then the next edition for my Rheum rotation as a PGY-II, and then throughout Fellowship. I give the latest edition to each med student who rotates through our Rheum clinic, but I find they are less and less impressed by it as the size of the Primer approaches that of a textbook. The information is still excellent, but I think it's getting too big for the niche it has always occupied. If you really want that much info, buy the latest Kelley.

I checked this book out from the library when I had the most horrible eczema outbreak of my life: sores up and down my arms and legs, peeling of the skin three layers down on my hands. My doctors were useless.

This book was a part of a turning point for my life - reading what it had to say about the psychological origins of skin conditions prompted me to take action that improved my life on all levels.

Get this and get better!

Whenever my eczema flared up, my friends would tell me I'm too stressed out. I didn't feel that way, not much more stressed out than usual, so the timing of the flare ups and the stress level at that time was sometimes confusing.
After reading this book, however, I recognized it's much more than just the simple stress - more deeply rooted issues I've apparently held for a long time. I had vaguely suspected this may be the case, but didn't know how/where to start. This book gave me the guidance to do that on my own.

I agree with 3 other reviewers completely. I no longer feel helpless and scared when I can feel my skin starting to flare up. I am not yet free from eczema, but knowing what may be the underlying cause of it, and how to calm it down, I have much stronger sense of being in control of my skin, body and my life.

Practical, informative, and more...

Great Self Help Book

Great Self Helf Book which gives you wonderful insights into the emotional factors of your condition. Let's suppose skin conditions are partially genetical, partially caused by wrong food intake, partially caused by external conditions (wheather, dust mites, etc...) and partially caused by emotional/stress factors (some say ALL skin conditions are caused by inner anger). I suggest you take an integral approach to treat your condition and optimize your food intake and do whatever you can about external conditions. This will take the balance of your condition into the right direction. The next step is to explore the emotional/stress factors of your skin condition. That is what this book is great for!

What advantages and safeties does your condition give you? What is the condition doing for you? Why are YOU affected? Why THERE and why NOW? This book provides great methods (a comprehensive list of most common needs the skin is trying to acquire via its condition; great excercises in self-knowledge; creating a Time Line to effectively understand why your skin condition is worse or better at particular moments; why particular places at your body are affected; what it does for you (what safeties and advantages); and let's you think about what if it got better or worse) to explore the emotional cause of your skin condition. This is the first step and understanding will already bring you towards curing of your skin condition! The next part of the book gives techniques to get yourself into a healing state which will give the next boost towards healing. It also outlines what professional help can do for you.

I eventually embraced a hypnotherapist into my healing process. My own condition is moving towards complete recovery (full body eczema). This book is a must read if you want to be cured!

If you think you feel bad with eczema, just wait until you read this book! As a life long sufferer from this chronic skin ailment, with episodes coming and going, I am currently suffering from one of the worst episodes I've ever experienced. This book would make any sufferer feel even worse, if they didn't have a good basic core knowledge of the disease and it's symptoms. The authors would have you think that the patient's lack of loving parenting is the cause of your problem, among other of their "causes". The fact that this could not be further from the truth automatically debunks the rest of the "helpful" information in this tome of trival! While relaxation therapies and being aware of one's self are excellent advices no matter what the ailment, to place the blame on the patient's problems on the patient is like blaming a baby for contracting cancer. These authors should be ashamed of themselves. It's true - some people will do anything to see their names in print and sell a few books. Sure wish I would have checked this book out at the library rather than wasting good money on a bunch of hogwash!

The Human Response to Touch

Review Date: 2008-03-17
It was 1976 when I first discovered this book. I read it through cover to cover nodding my head as he affirmed what I had sensed in my young life: touch is essential to healthy human development.

Though the cover and title look corny now, thirty years later, the content for anyone interested in the human response to touch, is historic.

It is telling and tragic that our scientists had to use research on baby monkeys to document the primate suffering and distorted growth with lack of touch. We as a culture have tried to leave our mammalian and primate origins behind us, but as long as we live in our bodies, we will share the vital need for touch to fully develop and feel whole as human beings.

If you're already familiar with general information on the human response to touch and you're interested it taking it to the edge of what we know at the beginning of this 21st century, take a look at Job's Body: A Handbook for Bodywork (Third Edition). Job's Body takes the understanding of touch to a cellular level!

I would highly recommend it as a background reader for anyone considering becoming a massage therapist, and definitely anyone interested in human development and psychology.

I am only 20 years old but have been interested in the science behind human interaction for many years. I continue to read many books, but this is probably one of my favorites. The book is a great read, and covers in depth more about the actual physical interaction from birth till death than any other books I've read...I strongly suggest it.

A must read for those interested in the lives of popular theologians!

Review Date: 2006-04-22
A very well written, in-depth look at the life of one of the 20th Century's greatest theologians. Kung also happens to be one of the most controversial theologians due to his official disciplining by the Curia's Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith (FMR: Holy Office).

Although I found this autobiographical memoir particularly engaging and interesting, it only covers half of Kung's life. In great detail, Kung introduces us to his upbringing, family, Roman theological education, French graduate work, early scholarly career, his appointment as a Council Peritus and then essentially concludes this work with the close of the Second Vatican Council. On at least two occasions, he refers to the "second volume of this work" which implies he will write the rest of his biography at a later time. For this I truly hope since what many consider to be his most fascinating saga (the revoking of his license to teach Roman Catholic Theology and battle with the CDF) has not yet been approached.

All in all, it is a wonderful, occasionally overly descriptive work that is a must read for those interested in the lives of major theological figures. Kung also presents a unique perspective of the Second Vatican Council which has not been seen to date.

I highly recommend this book!

This is going to take a long time to digest. I escaped from constraint by going into philosophy instead of seminary. But my impression has always been that the Church had a place for inquiry as long as you did not disrupt everyone else as you moved from reflective thinking stage to stage in your personal quest. I further thought that as you reached the highest levels you would realize that what the Church teaches was right all along. Beware thinking that the concrete interpretations you have as a young person are the only ways to interpret what was to be believed. I have found the statments of faith, for example Fides et Ratio, to be masterpieces of saying many things at once in many ways. You only fail when you try to impose one interpretation or one level on everyone else. My way or the highway. Now reading this I wonder if my Protestant friends do not have a point.

5 star book 3 star translation

Fascinating reading for those interested in the background of the Vatican II council sessions and Kung's part in them; and in the development of his theology. And for understanding who he is, getting behind the media picture of the young theological "radical". What emerges is that the Vatican's biggest problem with Kung is that they don't scare him, can't browbeat him, and are arguing with a man trained in their own methods.

Oddly, the book is written (or translated?) all in the present tense, which can be confusing at times, when some use of past tense might distinguish between what Kung thought at the time and thinks now. I don't know if this is the translator, or the author himself; at times it gets annoying and tedious, even occasionally sounding pompous, which is not characteristic of Kung judging from everything else (and that's practically his entire opus available in English) I've read of his work.

At any rate, the use of present tense is strange even in a memoir; I encountered it once previously in a biography, and almost couldn't finish that book.

Kung's memoir also contains some assessments of others (including the late and current popes) that come off unkind and "snarky", which also doesn't seem typical of Kung, even in dealing with opponents, who I think he typically confounds by courteously sticking to his position and insisting on truth. I can't help wondering if some of the "snarkiness" is also a product of the translation.

Also, there are, as noted by a previous reviewer, some odd translation errors, such as calling the USA Secretary of the Treasury "Finance Minister"; again, perhaps translation, or could be the translator trying to stay "true" (unnecessarily, in my view) to Kung's German? I have ordered the German edition (along with the new "Islam" volume) out of curiosity on this point. My German is labored, but I'm anxious to get started on the Islam volume, which could problably prove dangerous to Kung himself if it goes in the direction I suspect (urging modernization by subjecting the Islamic "scriptures" to exegesis, historical and form criticism commonly applied now for decades in Christian scriptural scholarship.)

As a theology student at Catholic University in Washington, D.C. during the time of Vatican II, I was constantly in tune with what was taking place in Rome. Many of our professors made bi-weekly trips to Rome when the Council was in session and would bring back the details.
Kung's memoirs adds the inside story to complete the picture. It is a lengthy, yet fascinating review of the various Vatican II designers and participants. Better yet, you get an excellent understanding of the reform and why it was ended before it could take hold. And the knowledge of the author comes through. It's no wonder that Kung was the top theologian and primary behind-the-scenes designer of it all. I eagerly await his second volumn.

I always find myself reading andrews' dermatology textbook when I want something fast, accurate, but unique about any dermatology theme on my dermatology practice. I think this book a must among derm textbooks. The references are clear and the authors go right to the point when explaining any dermatology condition. It doesn't go further as Fitzpatrik or Rook, but I like the authors point of view about therapy of any condition. I consider it a "cult" book. Perhaps it should not be a reference book, but it adds something more, with short texts, to the traditional textbooks, though photos could be in colors.

Review Date: 2004-09-28
I will go ahead and be completely candid and truthful with my review on this book. This I know will go very unfavorable with everyone out there and the universal notion that this is the greatest book to ever come out on Dermatology. I'll be the leper of that group.

The book, which covers the major aspects of most if not every dermatological disease is very thorough in scope though extremely and poorly organized. This is the downfall of this book which for completion purposes just scans over the major point in an extremely wide part of medicine, Dermatology. You have the book mention something in passing and then for no reason in a later section would go back to what it covered with more details. I have no idea why that happens a lot in this book. I admit there are excellent chapters out there, but their poor organization and lack of reasonable trend just puts the book off. The book may have the right wording and the ease in language, but simply fails to put things together in a coherent way. Another major problem is that the book's pictures are B&W. In a time where color images are ubiquituous, this is not acceptable. A lot of people I know have mentioned these negative features, though they still like the book because it's the only book out there that they can carry around and still look through between clinics or grand rounds.

I believe that for residents out there, that books like Ftizpatrick, the critically-acclaimed Bolognia and the bible Rook should be required reading for all residents to build the basis of sound, strong and a lasting base for their Dermatology education. Andrew's could be used for a fast quick reference, but not the one that should be counted on making life and death decisions in dermatological care. Andrew's is good, but not that great and certainly not even closest to being the best.

The new edition is updated not only in therapeutics but also in the latest in genetic defects underlying the genodermatoses that the boards love so much. It concisely covers clinical dermatology in a very readable format. One thing it lacks is an organized chapter on therapeutics.

I was looking for a little guide to help me identify skin conditions quickly, at the bedside. Derm Notes is a nifty little book, that has alphabetized tabs and skin conditions for quick reference. My only complaint about this guide, and one that won't apply to most potential purchasers, is that as a pediatric provider, there are a few key conditions specific to peds missing from this book. I would love to see a peds derm notes, but since there is none, this book is the next best thing. Highly recommended.

Great for rotations!

I am a PA student and bought this book for my surgical/clinical derm rotation. This book is an excellent review of the most commonly encountered problems. There is a section which specifically covers lasers and what they are used for and at what strengths, which was very helpful. I kept this in my pocket for the whole rotation and was constantly looking at it in my free time. I eventually showed my preceptor and she was so impressed with it she eventually bought one too! A definite necessity for the clinical setting!!!

This is a small pocket guide with excellent text information. The only reservation I have is about the pictures. The quality of the images is a little low.

A Great Resource

This is a great pocketbook for anyone who is learning dermatology. Not only is it full of helpful visuals, but it is concise, small, and very user-friendly.

Derm notes is a concise reference that quickly defines each condition, gives etiology and prevalence within patient populations, and presents treatment options. It also contains images that are excellent for recognizing conditions as they present in the clinic.

I am currently on my Pediatrics rotation and have referred to Derm Notes frequently to confirm diagnoses and consult treament plans. It can't replace a large derm atlas, but that isn't its function. This book does what it's designed to do, provide a fast and accurate clinical reference for students and providers.

This book can take a lot of abuse. The plastic pages are tear-proof and can be written on and wiped off. Mine has seen heavy use without a mark or rip to show for it. This book is money well-spent.

My teenage son was recently diagnosed with a form of Scleroderma (Morphea) that is believed, at this point, to be only localized. However, the endless tests have continued as we try to define the parameters of his disease and condition. This book has been EXTREMELY helpful to me in understanding all the "doctor speak" in plain English so I feel less overwhelmed with the enormity of it all.

I HIGHLY recommend this book if you or a loved one has been diagnosed with this very rare, difficult to understand disease.

I cannot say enough about this book. After being diagnosed I felt completely terrified and powerless. This book walks you through things you can do to ensure you receive the best treatment possible. Full of great facts about scleroderma that my doctor either didn't know or just didn't tell me. Really stresses the fact that you must be your own advocate and that is a great impetus to get out of bed and do everything you can. Emotionally supportive, just a wonderful book (that came for me at exactly the right time).

I purchased this for my niece who was just diagnosed with scleroderma and her medical team were not educating her as to the long term affects and prognosis associated with this disease. After reading the book, she was able to quiz her physicians on those points she needed clarified and has been very satisfied with this book's comprehensive overview for the newly diagnosed scleroderma patient. Highly recommend this book.

This is a wonderful book! As a newly diagnosed patient, I have found this book to be the best book I have read on scleroderma. Not only is it the most comprehensive, but it is extremely well organized and easy to read. The information and guidance the author provides is both practical and uplifting. I was so impressed with this book, I even bought a copy for my doctor!
I highly recommend this book for anyone with scleroderma, regardless of how long they have been living with the disease.
