This book was has been more useful than all the advice I have gotten from various doctors, articles in magazines and "skin care specialists". The writing is clear and finally so is my skin.

The only acne book you need.

I was privileged to read an advance copy of this book. As a dermatologist, I have always discouraged my patients from buying acne "self-help" books because all of them are either insultingly oversimplified or numbingly complex. And in the end, the answer to your acne problem, amazingly enough, always turns out to be the author's own miracle regimen, which he or she will be only too happy to sell you for an unconscionable amount of money.

And frankly, I never thought a book in the "Dummies" series would be the one to break that mold. However, I can honestly say this is no less than the finest and most objective layperson's acne book ever written.

Dr. Goodheart has succeeded admirably where many others have failed -- he has taken a very confusing subject and made it crystal clear. He explains what acne is, in terms anyone can understand. He outlines the various types of acne, along with various treatment options, both over-the-counter and prescription, for each, and even addresses disease "lookalikes" that are often confused with acne, even by some physicians.

And most importantly, he cuts through all the lies, legends, and myths of acne treatment. You will learn which treatments really work, and which are a waste of money. You will learn what you can do for acne on your own, and what you should leave to the professionals. And most importantly, you will learn all of this from someone without a financial interest in which treatment you choose.

Finally, an honest physician, who is not trying to sell you any miracle potions or magical snake oils, has set on paper a completely objective evaluation of all the legitimate treatment options available, including Accutane.

Everyone who suffers with potentially disfiguring acne -- and their parents -- should read this book. It will be an invaluable resource for them, and for me as well. I will have several copies in my waiting room.

If anything can help bridge the generational divide, it's this book! Easy to read, incredibly informative, Dr. Goodheart has provided a terrific overview of a subject that's often difficult for parents and teenagers to discuss. This book's given us great historical, clinical and psychological perspective---so that together we can figure out possible treatment strategies. It's helped make my husband and I a bit more sensitive about what our kids are going through---while it answers a lot of their spoken and unspoken questions. We all recommend ACNE FOR DUMMIES highly.

I was interested in this book before even buying it because I have seen Dr. Goodheart's name several times in the NY Times Science Section. And the book more than met my expectations. NOt only is it clear and informative, but I feel as though Dr. GOODHEART is talking directly to me, anticipating all my questions before I can even think OF them. And he takes into consideration not only the skin but how we all feel when we're struggling with how we look and helps give us ways to deal with that. This is a terrific book: easy to use and hugely informative. This is the book to buy about your acne troubles or even other related skin issues.

My mom gave me Acne For Dummies to read because I'm very frustrated about my acne and for the first time I read something that I could UNDERSTAND and was also very helpful. I also enjoyed some of the unusual sidebars!! I recommend this book for all teens who have been confronted with the confounding problems of acne-- this book is clear, concise and very useful. I will refer back to it from time to time to remind myself of the options available to me. I think all pediatricians should be recommending it as well as school nurses and stuff. Thanks Dr. Goodheart for writing this book!!

My wife developed chronic urticaria, nothing helped, the doctors could not do much. We would stay up all night itching. It got so bad, it was making us miserable. At my wits end, I was combing over all the journal articles I could find, reading every book I could get my hands on. I was slowly starting to make sense of what was going on, and our doctors could not. I finally ordered this book thinking it might have something about CU. It was a little pricey for a graduate student. When I got the book, I was just so amazed at how great it was. A large number of color picture, and it covered chronic urticaria, very thoroughly. It took 3 months of reading journals review articles and other books. Had I had this set, I would of been done in 30 minutes. It has everything you could think of involving the skin you could think of. This book is worth, four times what it costs.I would recommend it for educated people, but not just doctors, and sciencetists.

Good bye ROOK , The most compact dermatology textbook containing ALL the information within 2 vols is finally here. The book can be said to be the dermatology counterpart of Medicine's Kumar and clark .It has flow charts which help you understand and diagnose various conditions .It also has lots of tabular columns which give you all the facts about a topic (eg ,indications of methotrexate or screening tests done before starting methotrexate for psoriasis )in one single table which makes it very easy for you to retreive what you want in a glance.

The book also has lots of photos about common and rare diseases .The text is easy to read (flows ).This book fills a long felt vacuum among dermatologists of a standard textbook containing all the information ,which is easy to read and yet compact and handy.

I've been meaning to pick up a copy of this book for a while. I always hesitated because I figured it would be just another one of those "diet books" that would end up collecting dust on my bookshelf. Not this book. This is any excellent book that actually makes eating better fun. The first thing you do is take a quiz which helps you figure out your main personality type + sub-types. You then follow an eating plan that works best for your personality. The amount of calories you can eat also depends on some various factors such as age, activity level, etc. and another small quiz is provided to help you to figure this out as well. I like how the author recognizes that we're all different. Some people need to eat mini-meals all day long where other folks need a diet made up of sensuous meals or gourmet type fare. Whatever your inclination, you will find a plan that will work for you in this book.

THE BEST TOOL TO RE-TEACH YOURSELF HOW TO REALLY EAT.

I LOVE THIS BOOK. IT COMES WITH ''POP-OUTS'' THAT HAVE HELPED ME TO ACTUALLY SEE WHAT I'M PUTTING IN MY MOUTH. THE FIRST WEEK I USED THE "POP-OUTS", I FOUND I WAS EATING FROM 500-1000 CALORIES PER DAY(NO WONDER I WAS STEADILY GAINING WEIGHT!). I WAS SURPRISED AT HOW WE LET FOOD MANUFACTURES, RESTAURANTS, AND OURSELVES OVER- INDULGE BY EATING THE WRONG PORTIONS. I NO LONGER SUPERSIZE MY FOOD, AND I TAKE HOME AT LEAST TWO PORTIONS IN A DOGGIE BAG WHEN I EAT OUT. I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANYONE WHO HAS FORGOTTEN WHAT IT FEELS LIKE TO EAT THE CORRECT PORTIONS. THIS BOOK IS FILLED WITH EXCELLENT INSTRUCTIONS. TIPS, AND YUMMY RECIPES. BUY THE WAY, THE SECOND, THIRD, AND FOURTH WEEKS OF USING THE ''POP-OUTS'' (TO RETRAIN MY MIND TO EAT THE CORRECT PORTIONS) I LOST A TOTAL OF 15 POUNDS.

This book helped me to lose 55 pounds!

I've read many diet & nutrition books over the years, looking for help in overcoming my life-long battle with excess weight. This book finally did it for me! While the eating program included in the book is similar to other healthy, low-fat diets, it was the REST of the book which got me inspired. Using a series of questionnaires, Wiatt guides the reader to an identification of his or her own "eating personality." The premise is that different personality types face different challenges to healthy eating, and need to structure their diets accordingly to succeed. This book is fun to read, and quite compelling. I not only enjoyed the read, but I've also enjoyed putting the plan into action...the first diet I've ever been on that doesn't FEEL like a diet!

I happened upon this book after my mom bought it and it's been one of the first pieces of comprehensive eating advice I've ever encountered. The author sets you up with tips for how to eat sensibly, and I've become a lot leaner since following her advice. The personality styles thing is a bit corny at first, but the approach is so gentle and effective that it's become my little food bible. Most importantly, the author enables you to make healthy eating second nature in a very enjoyable, uncontrived way.

A very refreshing look at eater personalities!!

I found Carrie Latt Wiatt's book lastnight and had to pick it up. I am a sucker for any kind of diet plan or panacea. So I bought it and started to read it right away. Immediately, I felt a sense of relief in reading what I read on each of the different personalities of eaters. Mrs. Wiatt doesn't try to fit everyone into one category because she knows, from years of study, that everyone eats differently and therefore relates and uses food in different manners.

I do hope to be able to use the simple to follow plan she has formulated for my "food personality." Many people have been successful by following Carrie Latt Wiatt's advice and I am inspired to believe I will be successful too!!

I love this book and believe it will help relieve other people who get stressed out by their personal battles with food, weight, body image and the diets that don't work.

This is not a diet book. It is a book that deals with the heart of why we eat the way we do and re-directs our focus on HOW to eat for nourishment and rejuvenation, as well as, complete health and well-being. END

This book is a decent intro to the topic if you don't know much about it, and definitely gets points for being a quick, easy read. I would recommend it to someone that knows very little (or nothing) about lupus, but not for anyone that has a good knowledge base already. It does contain a lot of good information, but a lot of it is obvious common sense you don't need to pay for (like.. are you tired? rest! or a great way to exercise is to walk!)...

Two of the biggest names in Mexican Dermatology and international skin tropical disease research/patient management have combined to edit a very useful, practical book about tropical dermatology. The text includes chapters from the editors and 28 expert contributors (mainly from Mexico) covering all dermatoses (mostly infectious diseases) common to the tropics. Each chapter is concise and the writing style is uniform - all diseases are subdivided into the same subsections - brief historical introduction, geograpical distribution, etiology, clinical picture, and treatment. The text is easy to read, well indexed and adequately illustrated, although all figures (nearly 200 in all) are in black and white in order to keep production costs low. The book is a compact size with a ring-binder spine in keeping with other volumes in the Landes Bioscience Vademecum series. It is an ideal book for a big coat pocket or the clinic desk drawer. It is the sort of book that is extremely useful if one happens to be puzzling over a patient from the tropics and thinking "I wonder if it could be that...?" Chances are that the memory can be focused very quickly with a quick dip into this book.

Aside from dermatologists, this book will certainly be of interest to mycologists and indeed any physician who either practices in tropical countries or sees patients that travel to the tropics. For trainees in dermatology this book provides essential core knowledge (for example, all you need to know about rhinosporidosis in 500 words and 3 illustrations - remember this next time you examine a patient with an odd intranasal papule!) and would prove to be a good investment. Drs. Arenas and Estrada are to be congratulated on producing an important and readable book. It has been well received in Mexico and it deserves to be an international success. The reviewer's copy of this book has been donated to the Calnan library at St. John's Institute of Dermatology. I encourage you to have a look at it, and then buy your own copy.

This manual is directed at a broad audience: medical students, general practicioners, health professionals, and humanitarian organizations, as well as well informed and careful travellers. It is of interest to anyone living or working in a tropical area. Presented in an easy to read format, the book has 358 pages and 206 figures with black and white illustrations. The text is concise, precise and written in english for broad audience appeal.

Three quarters of the world population live in tropical or subtropical regions which are often characterized by extreme poverty and severe living conditions. It is here that the grave tropical diseases are concentrated, constituting tropical pathology. Roberto Arenas and Roberto Estrada are dermatologists practicing in Mexico, a country where they are able to observe the full spectrum of tropical pathology, rendering them highly qualified to direct the publication of this manual of tropical dermatology.

The editors have compiled this brief, but complete, manual with the input of experts in the field of tropical dermatological diseases. 70 dermatoses, are presented in order of importance. The mycoses (22 of the 70) are presented first: superficial mycosis, psuedomycosis, subcutaneous mycosis and mycosis by opportunists. The other chapters describe other tropical dermatoses, mycobacteriosis, pyodermas, treponematosis and genital ulcers, parasitic dermatosis, virosis, etc. For each of the 70 diseases detailed, the co-authors describe the geographic location, epidemiology, etiology, clinical picture, laboratory characteristics and treatment. Each chapter ends with selected bibliographic references.

In short, this manual is practical and highly recommended. It is simple but complete, making it perfect for the reader who would like to expand his information base about tropical dermatology. The only regret is that the excellent photographs are not available in color which would add value to this handbook.

With his previous work included in publications such as The Atlas of Dermatology and Medical Mycology, Dr Roberto ArenasÕ participation in any publication pertaining to tropical dermatology along with Dr. EstradaÕs experience in community medicine are automatic guarantees of the bookÕs quality. This book is clearly written and easily understood. It covers a broad range of tropical pathology including general mycosis, parasitic illnesses, malnutrition induced skin disorders, tropical ulcers and contact dermatoses from marine animals and arthropods. Tropical Dermatology should be included in libraries of Dermatologists, Mycologists, Pediatricians, Internists, and General Practitioners. While its target audience consists primarily of physicians and health professional in tropical and sub-tropical areas, the book also serves as a beneficial resource for physicians unfamiliar with tropical medicine as well as in areas where these illnesses do not prevail.

This is an interesting and complete book. Due to its diagnostic and therapeutic orientation, it is of very practical use. The black and white photographs are of good quality and the references are well selected and up to date.

This handbook will be useful for physicians in training as well as physicians of non-tropical countries.

Drs. ArenasÕ and EstradaÕs professional acumen is well known throughout Mexico as well as the UK, France, Italy, Thailand, Peru and Brazil.

This editorial novelty is a handbook for students and physicians, as it is a compendium of the most frequently encountered and important tropical dermatoses by naming their geographic distribution, etiology, clinical characteristics, and treatments. Superficial mycosis, pseudomycosis, subcutaneous mycosis, systemic mycosis, opportunistic mycosis, mycobacterial infections, pyodermas, treponematosis, genital and tropical ulcers, parasitic, viral and contact dermatosis, insect bites, dyschromias and many others are included.

The need for a tropical dermatology handbook has been accelerated by the current phenomenon of rapid globalization and the fact that 75% of the world population lives in the tropical and subtropical regions. Most of these dermatoses affect not only these regions and lower socioeconomic groups but also the immunocompromised hosts, so frequently seen in our daily practice. Patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplants, immunossuppresion treatments and those suffering from AIDS are becoming a daily challenge in our practice, as they are occasionally compromised by these tropical dermatoses, most of them well known in the tropical region of Mexico.

Through the collaboration of 28 authors, the main concepts of these dermatoses are clearly elucidated. There are 17 chapters, 358 pages, 8 tables and an outstanding iconographic collection of 206 black and white clinical, microscopic illustrations.

There is no doubt that "Tropical Dermatology" reviews the basic tenets of public health in the field of tropical dermatology. The editors, Roberto Arenas and Roberto Estrada, illuminate this with their knowledge, abilities and experience as teachers, writers and editors. They succeed in selecting a group of well known authors who are experts in their fields, and succeed in obtaining an interesting handbook that is versatile, precise, concise and easy to read and comprehend. As it is written in English, it goes beyond the medical language of international barriers.

This "Tropical Dermatology" handbook should be on the bookshelves of all of us interested in the fields of dermatology, infectious disease or public health.

This is a must have for all dermatologists. This book is small in size, but massive in content. I have always said, "If it ain't in Andrews', it ain't worth knowing." and this is still true of this version. This edition has great color pictures (although I always thought that the B&W photos in the previous editions were so terrific that you could still "see" the color in them.). This is another book that you really shouldn't be without whether you are a resident or practicing dermatologist.

Forget the hype about Bolognia, this is the best book on clinical dermatology out there today. Written by three of the top clinical dermatologists in the country, there is a unity of writing and approach and and a consistent high quality level that you don't get with texts with hundreds of co-authors (many of whom are in training themselves). There is also a refreshing aspect that this book is written for practicing dermatologists and avoids much of the incomprehensibility of so-called academic dermatology texts. Andrews is much improved over the last edition with color photos and the input from Dirk Elston, one of the most prolific dermatogists in the country. This is the one book EVERY dermatologist should have on his desk.

This is a must have book for non-dermatologists and dermatologists alike. This text has replaced Habif as the traditional textbook for non-dermatologists, because of its concise straightforward approach to dermatology, making it easily understood by the non-dermatologist. For the dermatologist, it is simple to read, but not lacking in depth, such that it can serve as the main textbook for refreshing the information learned during residency without getting bogged down with useless minutia. I use this as the textbook of choice on a daily basis.

definitely more useful as a reference than a picture only atlas. text gives an adequate introduction, but usually only a superficial examination of the topic to be discussed. definitely overstates the association of alcohol with various dermatologic conditions -- likely due to where the author practices.

The concept of differential diagnosis in dermatology is a pretty tough one. This CD Rom atlas handles this with great finesse. The authors bring out the points of differentiation between various diseases in their own style .The Discussions cover almost all the major diseases that a physician sees in his practice and also some uncommon ones. The clinical pictures are good , but i was dissappointed with the brief discussions regarding therapy , but then again one must remember this is a book on differential diagnosis and not therapy.

The CD ROM of the ATLAS OF DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS in DERMATOLOGY is worth the buy , with more than a thousand pictures along with facilities to zoom and shrink the pictures and a user friendly software through which one can navigate quickly between topics , pictures and the chapter guide(a sort of index for each chapter). The pictures are great , besides common diseases , photos of rare disorders are seen at the end of each chapter. Worth owning, and adding it in your collection.

As a resident in dermatology, I can strongly recommend this book. It provides concise thorough chapters on many aspects psoriasis, including its different clinical manifestations. Perhaps of most use are the chapters on treatment which summarise very well how to use the oral immunosupressive medications, retinoids, tar, light and more. Highly recommended for 1st and 2nd years.

As a full time Phototherapist in a busy Dermatology practice, I find "The Handbook of Psoriasis; Second Edition", indispendable. After reading Dr. Camisa's book I find myself able to provide better patient care, through an increased insight into the disease that the majority of my patients suffer from. I also highly recommend this book to my patients as a tool through which they can better understand and control their conditon, as it is written in such a manner that both the professional and patient can gather valuable, useful information.

I read the entire book cover to cover in one week, and I will now keep it in my clinic jacket. The content was succinct, thorough, and up to date. The writing style made reading easy, and the format will allow for quick referencing. Finally, there is an affordable, comprehensive source providing clear guidelines for treating complex psoriasis with high risk medications.

An excellent addition to any Dermatologists bookshelf

The Handbook of Psoriasis would make an excellent addition to any Dermatologist's bookshelf. Concise and complete, this reference provides current and pertinent information on all aspects of psoriasis ranging from classification and genetics to pathology and treatment. The chapters pertaining to treatment are especially comprehensive and would definitely assist the clinician in the treatment of this often frustrating illness, regardless of their career level. I was very impressed by the discussion on the immunosuppressant and retinoid drugs. Nebulous topics in most texts, Camisa eloquently clarifies the most essential factors regarding the use of these drugs(critical information that will be valuable not only for psoriasis but other dermatological disease entities as well). A definite "keeper" of a book which I highly recommend.
