Review Date: 2007-12-15
The author characterizes the growing up experiences and opportunities of the depression (1929-1941) born generation. This generation lived through expanding times and almost unlimited job choice and security. Yet, this generation escapes historical recognition for its significant developments. Carson notes, for example, the possibile beginings of church - state mixing contrary to our constitution by the popularity of religious figures in the media - Peale, Sheehan and Graham.
Anyone born during these years will readily identify with Carson's depiction of our growing up years.

First, I thank goodness that Cait Irwin, the author of Conquering the Beast Within, is back alive and well. That book is saving many lives, including mine.
Cait Irwin's struggle with depression is recorded mainly by images in Conquering the Beast Within. She could leave the beast of depression abstract like that, but in Monochrome Days, she bravely reentered where her beast sleeps and detailed her darkest times in order to save much more boys and girls with depression. Moreover, specialists of mental health give contemporary medical and psychiatric help this time.
With Monochrome Days you can recognize what's behind your severe mood chenge and ask for the right help much sooner than the author did. Very kind, self-giving, enlightening work.

Dr. Ghaemi is one of the foremost researchers, along with Goodwin, in the area of bipolar disorder. While this book is aimed at the professional audience, it is filled with nuggets of practical information, and provides the patient with an understanding of a rational approach to the treatment of bipolar disorder, including drugs, dosing, side effects, and psychotherapeutic treatment. It is concise and to the point.

This is a "Book Review" by Joseph Baum (Garrettsville, Ohio, USA):

"From the great Depression-wracked 1930s and World War II to the new millennium, the life of a "P.K." (preacher's kid) had never been an easy one. But add these complications: 11 siblings, primitive, needy and often in war-torn Singapore, Christianity in a non-Christian and sometimes hostile environment, and grinding poverty, the "Hang" family of Singapore had seen all of this and more..and not only survived but triumphed!"

"More...Blessings by the Dozen" matter-of-factly but with great reverence tells the story of the "Hangs" - a Methodist family of Singapore (and China) during the "lion's share" of the 20th Century. The 40 years that the Reverend Hang and the family spent in Singapore was born witness to by the Reverend in his book "My Christian Testimony (1970)". Now, in "More...Blessings by the Dozen", Paul Kee-Hua Hang, Jr. looks back on the family life of his parents and his family with 11 siblings
(12 Even Dozen children) during much of the same time".

"From surviving the great Depression and World War II to, finally, an enlightening visit to his "motherland" in mainland China, this book weaves memories, insightss, and scripture together with a faith-filled testament of devotion to Christ, to family, and to a man's devotion and responsibility to both. With interesting anecdotes, and loving memories, Mr. Hang takes the reader along a journey through the life of his family and the difficulties of balancing a life that is suffused by more than one culture. This is an eminently readable book! You will love it! It will not only entertain, but it will also educate. It deserves to be read! You will not be able to put it down - once you begin to read it!"

In this book, Charles Spurgeon leads the reader to the only true source for overcoming or dealing with sorrow and suffering. The heavy of heart, of which there are many among us, can find true solace from the wisdom contained in Isaiah 61: 1-3. It is hard to believe that 3 short verses in Isaiah 61 can be the the source of such wisdom and knowledge, and the inspiration for the mourner. I would highly recommend this unique and special book for any looking for physical, mental or spiritual relief.

Death is not an easy subject to discuss and it is certainly not an easy subject to write about. Some books seem very spritual in its handling of the subject. Others miss the mark completely. This book is different. It discusses the range of feelings that those of us who grieve for the death of a loved one expeirences. What makes this book a must read for the grieving is that not only is the author a professional therapist, but she writes from experience--she lost her first husband to cancer. She adeptly combines her professional and personal experiences in such a way that I felt as if she was talking directly to me. It helped validate my feelings and have provided me with a sign that I may be able to get passed my own grief. I have been recommending this book to others who are still mourning the passage of a loved one.
