Ruth, a young girl growing up during the Great Depression, has trouble understanding why her mother always seems to see the positive side of bleak situations. "Count your lucky stars" constitutes Momma's inevitable reply to her two daughters as she teaches them how to handle life in the face of job loss, food insecurity, hand-me-down shoes from the neighbor, and the closing of the local school. When Ruth's father gets a new job far from home through President Roosevelt's Civilian Conservation Corps program, Momma counts her lucky stars that the family can pay the mortgage while Ruth sees his departure from home as another star that burns out. Only when Ruth takes the initiative to use her skills in addressing the needs of the youngsters around her does she begin to have a brighter outlook on life.

This outstanding book will help children to gain a richer exposure to principles that are crucial for a basic understanding of the economic world around them. The lessons about unemployment, scarcity, and recession contained in The Lucky Star are important building blocks toward achieving a solid grasp of economics. Teachers and parents can use the book's poignant illustrations and clear text to help children come to terms with potentially difficult economic times they may be experiencing themselves.

If you are interested in how FDR turned the country around and infused it with a sense of optimism, replacing fear and confusion with purpose and concrete plans, read this book. A more descriptive title would be "Voices of the New Deal," because this is a book of the recollections of many of the prime architects of Roosevelt's programs.

When I first picked the book up, I noticed the date and thought, a lot has changed since then. Yes, and no, as I started reading I learned more about depression (I have been on medications for nearly 25 year), than I had from my stack of books. Most of my other books had an agenda (I knew this when I bought them leaning toward either how to benefit most from pharmaceuticals to scarying you if you went on a prescribed route). I always try natural first, and over the years I have stopped pharmaceutical treatment to try new herbal "answers" and combining herbs with my medications, which didn't work for me.
What I really value is the authors address the allopathic/pharmaceutical route and the herbal route and a combination approach (and what not to combine).
They first explain the body, in easy to understand terms and why it lacks the proper chemicals. They don't advocate one train of thought.
Here is what you can expect, every chapter is broken down into little subcategories for handy reference too:
What is Depression? (is it the blues or do you have an imbalance)
1)All About Antidepressants (the history and different types of imbalance)
2) Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors
3) Structurally Unrelated Drugs
4) Cyclic Antidepressants
5) Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors
6) Bipolar Disorder
7) Herbal Antidepressants
8) In the Future

It's the most controversial drug of our time. Prozac has been hailed a the miracle drug of the century and condemned as the nemesis of human individuality. Just what is Prozac? Is it right for everyone? "Making the Prozac Decision" was written to help you separate the facts from the myths about Prozac and other antidepressants, from the newer drugs, including Zoloft, Paxil, and Effexor; to MAOIs and tricyclic antidepressants. Differences between medications, their side effects, interactions, and potency are discussed in each section.

Depression can be a debilitating and sometimes life-threatening condition, but for those suffering from its symptoms, there are viable and effective options. "Making the Prozac Decision" will help you to discover and explore those options, providing the help and hope you need to make the right decisions for you or your loved one.

As a primary care physician, I am pleased to have a book I can recommend with enthusiasm. The style (narratives and vignettes) is particularly effective. It is concrete, thus enabling the reader to know exactly what the author is talking about and to recognize him or herself in the text. The strategies are more salient because they are presented after putting the reader into the context.

I have watched the movie based on this book several times and loved it! Recently i found the book at the library and read it. It was a million times better than the book even. This book is about a girl growing up during the deprssion who is just your average high school girl. i think that it was one of the first teen comedies. anyways, she falls for a couple of guys and a bunch of embaressing things happen, and it ends with Margie having her pick of the guys. I would definately recomend this book to anyone.

If you're answering your call to counseling the needy, those in pain, the lost and forgotten then this book is for you. John White answers the many hidden questions about secular and Christian counseling. His style of writing is superb, easy to understand yet difficult since it's a complex subject. But the difficulty makes one yearn to search on, to continue helping those in need. I'm currently reading one of his other many books called Parents in Pain. He breaks down this complex and mystical service in bite size pieces easy to digest. Of coarse, with the grace of God John White has the ability show us how the mind and behavior can be changed. Outstanding book.
