Depression Glass Figural Fantasies
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2001-11-24
This book features solid glass animal figurines, animal boxes, bookends, decanters, vases, and lamp bases. There are also a large number of non-animal items, notably figural flower holders (nude and draped ladies, & geishas), glass Buddhas, and sundry mermaids and madonnas. Where appropriate, the authors note reissues. Companies featured in this book include: American Glass Co., Cambridge, Co-Operative Flint Glass, Duncan, Fenton, Fostoria, K.R. Haley, Heisey, Imperial, Indiana, New Martinsville, Paden City, L.E. Smith, Tiffin, Viking, and Westmoreland. And what glass book would be complete without the ever-popular "mystery section?" There are lots of Cambridge swans, Heisey horses, Imperial slag animals. (There is a dizzying array of glass horses: rearing fillies, kicking colts, Clydesdales, Plug Horses, and so on.) Some of the items are actually post-Depression: for example, Viking's colorful Epic line, which was issued in the 50's, 60's, and again in the 80's.

This is a truly charming book, and I have obtained a lot of pleasure from it. It is filled with both black & white, and full color photos, as well as a few original ads from magazines. Many of the items are true collector pieces, and high-end, from hundreds to thousands of dollars: for example, Heisey's large amber "Flying Mare," which books at $2,200-$3,000, and L.E. Smith's green King Fish Aquarium, an enormous fish-shaped container valued at several hundred dollars (a shipping nightmare, I imagine!). Some pieces, such as Tiffin's crystal pheasant paperweight with controlled bubbles, are so rare that the authors are at a loss to put a price on them. Nevertheless, some of the smaller animal figurines are still widely available at inexpensive prices. This book is currently out of print, but available secondhand. The authors have done a fabulous job, and it is a must for collectors of collectible glass figurines.

comforting, spiritual perspective on coping with depression
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 1999-06-05
Many who are trying to cope with depression feel spiritually muddled and shamed. Rea and Carol offer an enlightening perspective on viewing depression as a human condition that even faith-filled people suffer. Their book also describes the diagnosis and treatment of depression in an easily understandable manner. Praises to these women for helping to take depression "out of the closet" and for hopefully helping many people find comfort and spiritual sustenance in recognizing that they are not alone in their suffering.

GOD'S FEET: grief unedited...
...crawl inside the head of a Christian writer whose life dips low...into deep crevices of unknown loss...wandering the streets in panic and confusion...hugging unknown passengers waiting at a bus stop for relief...sipping coffee with neighbors never seen before - prayerfully urging time to pass and heal...Laying on a hospital cot closed off from the world - questioning an emotional death and life tainted with spiritual fear -"Will this lack of earthly thriving leave that I may see God again?" A Window into the Colorful World of Early 20th Century California

James Worthen's biography of Rolph is a good read, full of details about life in California at the turn of the twentieth century. We know where we are headed in this story--to a denouement where Rolph's personal, heroic style of politics is tested by the bleak demands of the depression, but on the way we learn about early California before the Valley girls and freeways. Rolph loved people, dogs, horses, food, flying--as well as eating well and carousing with women. The book includes nicely chosen photographs of Rolph engaged in most of what he loved to do.

Sobat has created a tight and simple masterpiece. It is obvious that she has done her research about eating disorders yet she doesn't preach or pander. She lets the story unfold to its own simple conclusion in a surprisingly satisfying way. The story itself provides the reader with tools to deal with their own problems. Additionally, there are resources listed in the back. This isn't a self-help book; it's a damned good novel. But it will not harm a person with anorexic tendencies. It may well help them.

This is one of the best books I've seen about the Depression. It is made up of a bunch of articles by historians and other experts, some of whom were alive during the Depression. It has a lot of information about the causes of the Depression, how Roosevelt tried to deal with it, and how some of his programs seemed to work while other ones didn't. A very useful book for students or anybody who is interested in American history.
