Mary Patton's book addresses the issue of emotional abuse inflicted upon children by those who are supposed to be educating them. As the mother of five boys,I have watched the damage done by the thoughtless cruelty of teachers who are unhappy with their lives and burdened by the baggage of their past. The saddest part is that these teachers do not understand how painful their offhand comments can be.Two of my sons have learning disabilities despite IQ's in the superior range. My fourth grader often comes home sullen or tearful with another story about some humiliating comment from a teacher. When his older brother was in middle school, he would sneak out of school and go home. School was about as welcoming as prison. The author brings this situation to light with compassion and understanding.

This well written, documented and academic book reads like a novel. Author explains how the British global-led economy was structured in the 19th century, its weaknesses and how it unraveled in the 1920s and 1930s. He reviews monetary policies, banking instability in the pre- and Depression era, trade and its collapse, the rising reaction against international migration starting in the 1890s and culminating after World War I, the opposition between nationalism and capital that existed after 1929 and finally assesses if a new depression could occur again. Despite the dates, the events it describes look so familiar to us today that it sends shivers down the spine.

Written in 2001, the author was still optimistic in his conclusions saying that unlike the 1930s, nobody today was challenging global finacial orthodoxy. But since Ben Laden destroyed the World Trade Center, Argentina has collapsed like in the 1930s, Brazil is on the path to renege its debt just like in 1931, many scandals have shaken Corporate America, stocks have fallen to after-September 11 levels. Le Pen, a right-extremist was a contender to Chirac in the French presidential elections. Migrations have become a hot debate in Europe. The Bush Administration like the Hoover one puts barriers on international trade (steel), does not participate in multilateral debates (UN, Climate, International Court) damaging the system of multilateral organizations, debates and trade. These collapsed in the 1930s to be replaced by bilaterel relations with the known consequences: a global depression and a global war.

Wow!! what do I say. Well-- if you want to exercise but have found that you aren't consistent or are just so so about exercising--just read this book. It offers many reasons why exercising (cardiovascular) activity particularly is so very important and really helps those suffering with depression. It takes exercising goals from simply a toning/body image mentality to very real, down to earth, important reasons to keep in shape and do those cardio activities. It is an excellent motivator and once read you will really understand why exercise is so important to mental health.

Experiences Of Depression: Theoretical, Clincial, And Research Perspectives by psychiatrist and academician Sidney J. Blatt draws upon the author's 30 years of clinical experience and research into the nature of depression and the life experiences that shape it. Case studies lead into an in-depth dissection of the psychological dimensions of depression. Categorizing depression into anaclitic depression, which comes from feelings of loneliness, and introjective depression, from feelings of failure and worthlessness, Experienced Of Depression goes on to explore a widening range of assessment and treatment tools and methods to help those in greatest need. A scholarly, contemplative and clinical work researched in-depth and intended especially for advanced students and experts in the field.
