This handy guide gives a detailed description of depression by breaking it down and explaining the different types of depression. It provides for a deeper understanding of all aspects of depression and is helpful to those who are battling this monster. I find it very helpful to those of us who know someone who is depressed. It makes it easier to understand what they are going through. If you or someone you know is depressed, I recommend that you read this book. You will walk away with a much deeper understanding of depression.

Deciphering Scars is a brilliantly effective collection of poetry. Belz's debut shows her work to be extremely personal without alienating the reader and profound without seeming pretentious. The images she uses are accessable and universal, like the paper bag in "American Beauty." The poetry in Deciphering Scars leaves you with a visceral, empathetic experience (without any depressing baggage) that makes this a rare "page turner" in the poetry genre. Sounds odd to say it, I know, and it's something almost entirely unique - at least since Mr. Poe quit writing.

Full of stories and substance

I have had more than one bout of clinical depression in my life, and I find that the way I feel so isolated from others is one of the hardest things to deal with. When I saw this book I liked the concept, and what I found was that the many different stories from women who deal with depression were a great help. It's not always easy to find other women who are willing to discuss this issue with you, so it was a real relief to read their words on the page.
The author writes well and I appreciated the way she took on the various sides of depression and today's treatments, like the drugs and the therapies, as a journalist would--objectively.
Also, the book is smallish, which means just right in size for someone who's depressed and might not be able to concentrate all that well.
I highly recommend it.

Dr. Olen has written a wonderful piece of work. His ABC approach to understanding and conquering negative thoughts and feelings is truly effective. The book is condensed, making it possible for the depressed mind, with difficulties concentrating, to read and understand. His insights into why suicidal thoughts capture and control the mind make alot of sense and bring me peace. I honestly feel that I can regain control of my life.

Real Help for Real People

This is one of the most helpful books on managing and overcoming depression that I've come across. It's fast-paced and easy to read, and I really like the emphasis on finding practical ways to minimize the symptoms. The author has a very "take action" approach, which I've found to be very useful. I would definitely recommend it to individuals struggling with depression and to those who might have a friend or family member experiencing depression. (Every chapter includes a "take action" section written specifically for family members.)

Leslie Vernick understands women's hearts. She knows what it is to hurt and hope--only to see the hurt multiplied and the hope crushed. But she also knows the One who sees every hurt and fans the flicker of hope to a healthy flame.

Lovingly written and practically presented, Defeating Depression is a book filled with short, reader-friendly chapters that speak to women in whatever darkness they find themselves, offering light at the end of the tunnel and promise for a better future. Highly recommended as an individual or group study!

Dr. Ty Colbert offers an insightful, new, caring, and practical non-drug model of hope for people diagnosed with "depression," "mania," and "compulsive disorders." Dr. Colbert is a rare professional who is willing to openly and clearly challenge the medical model of mental health. And he's able to do this in a compassionate, caring way that realizes some people will feel angry and confused by this information. Writes Dr. Colbert, "If the medical model is a myth, and there are hundreds of professionals before me who take this position, then why is this myth kept alive? I believe that we all play a role in helping to perpetuate this myth of 'mental illness' in order to deny that we, as human beings, hurt each other." There are sections on a therapeutic-recovery program, creating soul-soothing activities, identifying areas of inner healing, understanding one's emotions each day, taking first steps toward recovery, and more. Also included are helpful appendices on medication withdrawal, the psychiatric reform movement, and other self-help resources.
