I really enjoyed this book. It was informative and innovative. I easily looked up problems and found the tools necessary to handle them. It was also easy reading in between the many other jobs one does as a parent!

It really works!!!

The tools provided by Virginia have helped me be a better parent to my daughter and has helped our relationship be more loving in every way. I feel much more in control of every situation and I DON'T HAVE TO YELL EVERY TIME!!!!

Try it... you'll like it.

I work in the nursery at my church and recently got a position with 18 mo. - 3 year olds. There are often situations that come up that are trying and this book really opened my eyes to a lot of things. It is a wonderfully written heart-warming book that gives hope to all who have struggled but are still passionate about caring for the little ones.

This is a phenomenal book! It is not a "how to" book per say but do you ever learn a lot about children and what makes them tick. I learned so much from these true stories that I know it will help me tremendously as a childcare provider and as a parent. I read a library copy but am going to purchase this book - more than a few times I wanted to highlight some things. Very good and highly reccommended.

This absolutely is the best textbook on the market for preparing to teach preschool children. The quality of the book reflects the author's intense dedication to early childhood as a teacher, center director, and University professor.

The book takes a much needed "how to" approach and is written in a clear and concise style. Beginning with understanding the characteristics of young children at different ages, the book is comprehensive. It includes everything you need to know to set up a creative developmentally appropriate environment; manage a classroom; plan an inviting curriculum, work with parents, etc. The hundreds of colored photographs help the reader see and understand quality indicators needed in outstanding early childhood programs. Treat yourself and order it today!

I highly recommend this book for any family going thru Leukemia. When my friends little boy was diagnosed 1 week ago with leukemia, I set out immediatley to find a book written for children that would explain to this little boy what was happening to him. I found and read a few good books on this topic, but this one is by far the best one I found. It is very thorough, but explained well. Every family going thru Leukemia, should have this book. It was also helpful for my own children so that they too could understand what is happening to their friend.

an outstanding introduction to leukemia for all ages

Recently,my six year old daughter was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia. Her doctor immediately gave us a copy of You and Leukemia. As a beginning reference, the book helped to explain the terms, challenges and struggle we were about to face. I have purchased copies for all of the family members so that everyone can begin to understand leukemia. Writing in a thorough but simple manner, Baker has produced an important resources for patients and their relatives.

This outstanding book for parents and caregivers of two year olds is the third in a series. It offers activities that promote total child development, including physical, mental, and the creative aspects of learning. The organization into easily located categories makes it easy to quickly locate an appropriate activity. As a grandparent-caregiver who used the books for Baby and One-year olds, I am pleased to find that the activities are just as well thought-out and age appropriate in this book as in the other two. The instructions are very clear and there are enough activities that even if only half of them were tried you would never run out of interesting things to do.

A wonderful protrayal of family life.

This is a beautiful book, both for the illustrations and for the sentiments that are portrayed: a loving home, which just happens to offer daycare to some darling children. There are concerned, thoughtful parents (who spend time at drop-of and pick-up connecting with their children) and a woman who has all the right ideas about how to be with those children.

There is just enough messiness at Ina's house to make everyone feel comfortable: a dog who wanders around, children's naps starting in Ina's lap, the opportunity to go out in the rain to mail some letters (and incidentally spash in puddles), free play in the yard, and a special birthday celebration for one of the children.

But for me, the best part of the book is a comment that Ina makes about Adam when he spontaneously shares a cupcake: "...Adam has a good heart...". I heard my grand-daughter show her understanding of this (the essential nature of children) when she repeated it about her own brother a week or so later after he had showed a kindness.

This is the best kind of learning. It is a great book to read to any child (2 1/2 years and up), showing a loving, caring adult, regardless of whether they are familiar with daycare.

Definitive Landmark work -- highly readable

This book gives a complete summary of the major problems with child care in the United States related to the high cost to parents, the mediocre quality of most care, and the difficulty parents have finding it. The authors argue that the affordability problem can only be solved through large increases in financial aid and that the federal government is the only practical source given the magnitudes involved. They also make recommendations for more public spending to create incentives for parents to demand good quality services and for providers to give it. I found the book extremely informative, authoritative, and easy to read.

Examines without bias

Finally a book that cuts through the bias surrounding discussions about childcare to give parents the straight facts. Too often the debate about appropriate care gets mired in discussion about morals and family values but the need for childcare --whatever our personal opinions are-- isn't going away; parents deserve the information in this book. For those actively searching for quality substitute care, the second-half of the book contains valuable insight into what a good care situation looks like based on the research uncovered in the first half of the book. I strongly recommend this book to any parent considering using non-parental care or anyone interested in child advocacy issues.
