Uninspiring and poorly written member of the series
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-11-17
This was not one of the better books in the series. There's no interesting description, no plot, not even a lesson to be found. Judging by most any standard, even the fairly modest one set by this series, it failed. It is, however, unoffensive both in its illustrations and writing; I suppose it wouldn't actively hurt a child to read this.

A Liberal perspective on child care
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 1998-01-13
A primer on public policy on child care, contains proposals for a 'brave new world'-style child care system, where Government and community-directed collective child care starts from birth onwards. Zigler wants daycare to extend as long as the workdays of mothers and fathers, implement before- and after-school care, etc.

The problem is, their own data shows the obvious solution: The best "day care" is parental care. Searching for better out-of-home care is pointless when in-home care - by mothers - is the real and best solution for children. Their data is good, but the attempt to square the real needs of children with the hollow feminist ideology that in-home mothering isn't important is ultimately self-refuting.

Good Effort, Overpriced!
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2001-02-25
While having some good material for anyone considering entry into the Family Day Care business, there is very little information provided which cannot be found in books selling for half the price. The only things I found in this book which was not in three others I have read on the subject were the copies of government forms which might be used by practitioneers once they have opened their home day care business. This does not add the enough value to the book to justify the price.

Not childcare specific
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-17
This book is not specific to the childcare industry. The authors have thrown information about childcare in here and there, but the book is basically a template for a business start up. I just opened a preschool with 80 children and a lot of what is in this book does not pertain to our industry.

Business wise
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2003-03-01
The book was really good to put things in perspective of a business view. It had very little to say specifically about childcare but I thought the book was good enough to get some helpful information from it and pass it on to a friend who had nothing to do with childcare.

Not worth your time
Helpful Votes: 35 out of 35 total.
Review Date: 2000-03-12
This book was clearly created for any type of business start up and contains very general information about starting up a business. There are many parts of the book that are completely unrelated to childcare, as in packagine, sales tax and beleive it or not mail order and catalog businesses... There is some good information about things to do when starting up a business, but you can get this help from other books that also have more childcare specific inforamation.

HORRIBLE

This author is clearly trying to make just a quick buck. I bought this book for me girlfriend because she is in the process of opening a child care center. This book is totally useless... DO NOT BUY IT

A waste of time
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-10-19
This book is junk. I can't believe someone actually published it. Vade Mecum must be a vanity press. Large typeface, not much information per page. If you take out all the charts, graphs, lists, index, bibliography and so forth, there are only 47 skimpy pages of text. The only thing useful in the book are the forms, which are copied directly without attribution from A House Full of Kids by Karen Murphy, which was published in 1984, 5 years earlier. I wonder if Karen Murphy knows how her forms were used.

His skin products don't work. His diet isn't new (and imperfect)
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2006-08-09

It hasn't been clinically proven that Perricone skin products work. My mom (age 46) tried them anyway, and they didn't work.

His advice to stay away from grains (and whatever comes from them, of course) is great, but not new. Yes, farm-raised salmon is screwed up, eat the wild one, but again, I knew that already.

And I disagree with his complicated "system" of taking supplements. If you just eat normal food, like vegetables and fruit, NOT grains and soda, you won't need supplements. The only supplement you need is fish oil, since farm-raised animals that we eat lack necessary fatty acids.
