This book is great - lots of fantastic tips, cute pictures and lots of honesty! Anyone who thinks they can look great by not taking care of themselves is in denial. This book helps you find the time to take care of yourslf whilst leading a busy, hectic life.

Pretty book, light on content

I bought this book hoping to find lots of tips, but I was pretty disappointed. If you've read about five women's magazines in your life, you will have already read most of the tips here- like how to make your own face masks out of oatmeal and honey etc. The pictures are pretty though.
I enjoyed 'Three Black Skirts- everything you need to survive' a lot better, and it had more useful advice.

very cute book

I thought it was charming. The pictures were cute and the advice pretty good, especially about eating healthy. I have a tendancy to eat lots of junk food on the run, and it offered easy solutions to combat this. I also liked the fashion section, but skipped the exercise section because I don't exercise. I recommend it.

I was disappointed by this book!!

I was looking for a book with tips about fashion, make-up, tips for saving time but what I got was a health book!! It is true most of the book is about exercising and eating healthy which is good if that is what you wanted but I have enough of these books at home. Only the last two chapters had what i really bought it for. I did like the cute drawings and the vibrant colors of the pages but really as a health book it's good but as a beauty guide it fails!!!!!! The explanation of the book makes it sound better than it really is!!!

Book should be titled: "The Busy Girl's Guide to Finding Time to Exercise"

This book should probably be entitled: "The Busy Girl's Guide to Finding Time to Exercise". It's true, exercising DOES make someone "look great" and feel better about themselves, but by halfway through the book I was thinking: "Okay, enough about exercise already! More about beauty secrets, fashion advice, etc." I mean this book is really great for a young woman who is trying to find little ways to exercise or loose calories throughout the day. From finding time at work to use fit time, or doing gardening work, this book tells how you can fit in calorie-burners throughout your day.

Overall, I would give the book about 3 stars. Only because the title of this book kind of mislead me. Overall, the book is pretty good. It has cute little pictures inside to catch your attention, and the reading isn't intensive or overbearing. It's a really easy and FUN book to read!

The book does eventually talk about little fashion advice, and makeup tips here and there, but it was a little too far and in between for my taste. This book mainly talks about exercise, and eating right. So, for those of you who are mainly interested in that, I think you'll like this book!

In order to get the abs that you see in this book, this would entail a full time job and commitment not only on what you eat, how much you eat and how many hours a day you would need to spend in the gym to accomplish this .. who has this type of time?

Most abs books are primarily the same. Good information but moderation is the key to life not the extreme.

I bought this when my daughter was a baby. The ideas are more for toddlers even pre-school ages rather than for babies. I do like the book, and am using ideas in it now since my daughter is older, but it was of little help for when she was a baby.

I received this book as a gift at my baby shower for my first child, and the tips are fun and useful. Now with my second, I find myself flipping through it again to find helpful activities. The book is fun and illustrated by children, written in an easily understandable tone. You can easily find what you're looking for. From games to play with your baby to infant massage, it's chockful of great ideas -- it even has delicious and healthy recipes for homemade baby food! A must-read if you have an infant or young toddler.

This book was a disappointment to me since I was looking for practical tips to commom cat problems. Her health check up list was reasonable but the cures turned me off. Reading this book, you might think that you should spend all your time cooking nutritious meals for your cat(s). The fact that most good cat foods are an adequate diet might leave you more time to concentrate on feeding yourself and your family better. My cats are well cared for but I also have a life outside making the many recipes she gives in the book.

A very useful book for the nutritionally-minded cat owner

This is one of my favorite cat books because it has taught me quite a great deal about cat nutrition. It has also stimulated my interest in the area of feline nutrition and helped me adopt a more holistic approach to cat health. Although I read the book in May 1997, I still refer to it every now and then if I have a question on cat health or cat food. This book also contains Dr. Bicks' cat treat recipes and her special '30-day new-life nutrition' program. All in all, I find this book interesting and the advice it offers both useful and quite practical.

Awesome book!

I have read this book and I must say that it is full of information in regards to feline health. For those of you who feel that too much of your time is taken in preparing Dr. Jane's recipes for you kitty or if you think that store bought cat food is good for your cat, think again! Just look at all of those chemicals like BHT and BHA which studies have shown to cause various forms of cancers as well as brain tumors (according to university and independent studies). Or the fact that almost all cat foods first 3 listed ingredients start with corn and or wheat ( major cause of allergies in cats) should be a major concern. I've recently found her line of pet food to be a great way to go if the recipes are daunting.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who is trying to break the paci habit. I have long enjoyed the Berenstain Bear books, but most of them were to advanced for my 22 month old. He loves the Baby Board books. They are just the right size for him, virtually indestructable, and the content is geared toward the younger child.

This book leaves it up to the child to make the break with the paci. It lets them know that it is okay to leave the paci behind when they are ready. I think that this book will certainly help the process along when he is ready.

Very babyish pacifier book

I was very disappointed in this Berenstain Bears book. The book is way too simple for my 24-month-old. The book does not tell a story. It basically tells about Baby Bear and how he needs his "passie" and it needs him. This worries his mother and dad. One day he gives it up, without rhyme or reason. This relieves his mother and dad.

I don't know about you, but my daughter's paci does not "need" her, and I don't want to give her another reason like that to keep using it. If you are looking for a good book to encourage your child to stop using his or her paci, KEEP LOOKING!

Nick Chavez, is an actual Stylist who owns his on salon in Beverly Hills, whom I discovered through QVC. His products are excellent and so is his book. He has done an excellent job. His book is beautifully illustrated, and his tips and directions on how to syle and take care of your hair are easy to follow. He sincerely cares about a woman's hair and how she treats it. Nick covers every hair texture, which many books do not. One added bonus for those of us who are followers of Nick, he includes a wonderful little bio about how he got started, his relationship with QVC, and his family (wonderful picture of his beautiful family). Buy the book, his tips do work, and buy his products!

I was disappointed in this book- not much practical advice, almost nil hair cutting advice. He advises not washing hair every day. Ugh! I see plenty of unwashed hair and it isn't attractive. I don't use shampoo every day, but do use conditioner. Also, he is a big believer in setting hair with rollers. If you ask most males, their opinion is that women in hair rollers are very unattractive-good way to ruin a marriage. The hair styles are unimaginative (and need a set). Often he sends you to a "professional stylist" rather than helping you take care of hair on your own (Gray hair-difficult to color, go to professional.) Didn't learn anything new-all seems to be common sense.

Review Date: 2006-02-22
This book is a skimpy introduction to the Buteyko method, which seems to work. While the Buteyko method is very good, this book is deliberately vague about the details of the actual exercises. Hale spends chapter after chapter describing all the illnesses that the Breath Connection method will cure, but leaves many key questions about the method unanswered. Why do you take your pulse? How exactly do you breath shallowly? Do you use your diaphragm? Do you count? If not, how are you sure that you are doing it right?

Hale is plainly drumming up business for her clinic, so if there are more complete books on Buteyko elsewhere, I would strongly recommend going there.

The Buteyko method is a superb therapy for asthma. Teresa Hales book touches on it but does not contain it. There are many books available which are worthy of reading especially if you have asthma, fatigue and other complaints. For example- do a search for Asthma Free naturally, Every Breath you take, The Buteyko Manual or a very simple read with all exercises called Close Your Mouth.

Good luck and healthy breathing

GOOD INFO, BUT A BIT VAGUE
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-03-23
Well, how do I begin? First, I must say that I approached this book a bit cautiously optimistic based on the mixed reviews I read here. I had really wanted to get Close Your Mouth, by Patrick McKeown but I didn't want to wait. Luckily I found a local bookstore that had Breathing Free so I bought it right away. I must point out, I do not have asthma, but I know I'm a chronic hyperventilator that's been extrememly problematic this past year.

After I read it, I found the poor reviews were really based on somewhat poor comprehension of the material, although my biggest gripe is that the book IS a bit vague as some of the reviewers pointed out (Good thing I went ahead and ordered Close Your Mouth).

Does this method (Buteyko)work? I'm not sure yet, as it's only been 3 or 4 days. But I feel more controlled over my overbreathing, and I'm more conscious of it. I've already seen an improvement over how many breaths a minute I take, but not really in my controlled pause. I'm not sure if it's going to prove to be a panacea for me, but the stress levels I've been experiencing are becoming more manageable.

Conclusion: At this point, this book has been helpful, but based on other reviews I think there may be better books on the topic. Read this as an introduction, but be prepared to invest in other books.

Brilliant! - all asthma sufferers must try this out.

The idea presented in this book is so simple and radical, I read with severe skepticism. But I made an agreement with myself to give the 5-day program a try anyway. Well, it works! You truly get results in 5 days - but you have to commit to it. It's worth it. It hasn't cured my condition, but it has had a significant impact. I'm confident that if I continue to practice the breathing technique, and follow the other recommendations in the book about dietary adjustments, drinking habits, etc, the effects will continue.

i bought this book for a man with emphysema . the only good advice is to breathe through the nose. a technique taught in other medical info for pulmonary patients after they have calmed down from losing thier breath. Pulmonary rehab teaches deep breathing and other lung excersises , in every study and there are numerous, patients have improved breathing dramaticlly . so deep breathing is not a bad thing as this book would have one think , and anyone who has any education knows that plants and trees do not use oxygen they create it . the book is very redundant in speaking of the hale clinic . it critisizes medicines that are effective though have harsh side effects in helping with breath for those whom are severely ill but leaves nothing to replace them , other then breathe through the nose. however if the medicines are removed the person in all likely hood would not be able to breathe at all . it truly is not a helpful book , and when trying to go to the website , one came up with nothing but ads that the hale clinic probably gets paid to have on the so called site . or what i call a non existant site.with no contact info , it is wrong to give people a false sense of hope while giving them misinformation that benefits the seller of the information .it gives a false quick solution that does not work to those who are seeking desperately to find something , anything . and is dangerous to that person if they quit medicines tht help them breathe based on the misinformation in this book .

Acid/Alkaline Confusion
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2006-04-13
This book promotes the theory that certain foods are considered to be "acid forming" or "alkaline forming" in the human body, and that to maintain the desirable alkaline state, you must choose your foods carefully.

Ms Lark's recommendations differ from most acid/alkaline balancing diets, however. Ms Lark seems to think that acidic foods are "acid forming" (i.e. bad), while in fact many acidic foods are actually "alkaline forming" (i.e. good), meaning they create a desirable alkaline state.

Ms lark suggests taking lemon juice or cider vinegar to correct excessive alkalinity. According to most charts on acid/alkaline forming foods, lemon juice and cider vinegar, although themselves acidic, are actually alkaline forming in the body. Thus, Ms. Lark's recommendations leave me believing that she is confused about the very system she is promoting.

Wrong chemistry

Review Date: 2004-03-17
The book, as the title suggests, purports to explain some factors influencing health in terms of chemical principles, such as acid/base balance. However, there are serious errors in the book on the chemical facts that are fundamental. For example, the authors state that oxygen is beneficial because oxygen is alkaline. Outright wrong because molecular oxygen is by no means basic (a better term for ¡°alkaline¡±), or alkaline, in any sense of the acid-base definitions. In other parts of the book they claim ozone is good for health. The fact is that ozone in the breathing air is very harmful to our pulmonary system. Ozone is chemically active and generates radicals to the extent of being toxic in the low concentrations. It is almost criminal to advocate use of ozone generators in the living environment.

I bought this book by hazard a couple years ago, but never got around to reading it, until now. I just offered a copy to my college-bound 17-yr old so that she may begin a lifetime of good eating ethics, or at least be aware of the consequences of not doing so.
Not being born in America, I know a good deal about eating the right foods, but this book has put it very concisely into perspective. I especially appreciate the scientific approach that Dr. Lark has offered us.

This book is basically a calendar that you use to fill in what you ate and what exercise you did and note how it made you feel. It is a companion book to The Chemistry of Success. I bought it used so I'm not out alot of money and its my own fault for not reading the editors reviews more carefully.

This book offers no useful information. I was expecting fresh ,new coping techniques and ideas in behavior modification for difficult behavior. Mr. Azerrad seems to feel most problematic behavior can be resolved by asking the child to be reasonable and to stop it.This book is the literary equivalent to that old joke:"Doctor, Doctor it hurts when I do this..."and the Doctor replies,"Well don't do that anymore."

The book provides a system for positive reinforcement of good behavior. I agree with the author's basic premise that parent fall into the habit of reinforcing bad behavior via attention to it.

Ignore the diatribe against ADHD drugs if you want, I don't think it's all that well-founded, perhaps it's too broad brush. But I would agree with his diatribes against just about every other book every written on child rearing, lots of them teach parents to inavertently reinforce bad behavior. "The Incredible Years" is another good book, available from U of Washington Parenting Training program.

I congratulate Dr. Azerrad on immediately alienating those he claims to serve

all before even getting to the first chapter. Oh, wait, he needs no one congratulating him--he does that himself at least 10 times per chapter with each case "example."
This book claims that ADHD and other similar disorders are caused by the parents of said children, bringing behavioral therapy back into the dark ages where parents of such children sent them off to institutions to raise when they felt like failures by the system that claimed to want to help them. He blames every other type of behavioral intervention for creating kids with attentional, defiant and other problems, yet amazingly most of his examples are of children with very minor issues caught quite early in the game--their first 3 years--when most issues are easily corrected by maturity.
If ADHD and other developmental disorders are caused by the parents inability to discipline, then why are only 25% of a single family's kids diagnosed? He never adequately answers that which totally defeats his thesis.
Yes, his behavioral recommendations are sound--positive reinforcement only for positive behaviors and swift removal of positive reinforcement for negative behaviors with immediately telling the child that the behavior is not to be done. This is absolutely nothing new and he adds nothing to what teachers, counselors, psychologists and, yes, caring parents already know.
The only other positive I'd say about this book is that its a quick read with short chapters--easy to take in during trips to the restroom...
Obviously I will not be recommending this book to the parents I work with as an occupational therapist.
