This book is a quality overview covering most facets of long term care facility development. As with any broad coverage, there will be information that does not apply to your project, and areas that you will need other sources to complete the picture. But the authors of this book know their stuff.

Written by architects and planners for same; but accessible to the lay reader. A good tool for those interested in developing long term care facilities and senior-oriented communities.

A Very Care Bears Thanksgiving Celebration
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-18
"Giving Thanks" is a "Care Bears" book made extra-special by a rare appearance from the Care Bear Cousins, who have gone mostly unseen since the series was revived. in this book, the Care Bears are planning a big Thanksgiving banquet and Thanks-a-Lot (a rarely seen Care Bear) has been particularly busy setting things up and making invitations. He's sure that things will go great -- until a big rainstorm threatens to spoil the entire thing. Of course, if you think some rain could spoil things for this group -- then you don't know the Care Bears or the Cousins.

This is another fun book in the series that expresses the usual series concepts of teamwork and friendship. It should be a hit for any Care Bears fan -- particularly around Thanksgiving-time, though any time will do just fine.

A different time

Stoltzfus studies the roughly twenty years after World War 2, and the social attitudes in the United States towards women, in that time. She found that picking the topic of whether a government (federal or state) should offer child care to women in the workforce was a good focal point. It let her study the women's efforts to get this maintained after the war years, when it was introduced as an emergency measure. Plus, the reactions of the lobbied politicians and bureaucrats were typical of the prevailing social attitudes towards working women.

It really has not been that many years ago. Yet the echoes from these pages makes it seem like another era. Probably it was. When any employer could fire a female employee soley because she got married, or pregnant, with any risk of opprobrium.

The book also goes into the intertwining of the child care issue with that of race. How, in this pre-civil rights time, many women who had to work were Negro. Which naturally made harder the lobbying of white legislators.

A good source

This book is a good source for child care information and how to choose the right type of child care. I have the 1990 release which is beneficial but not current enough. I would recommend Sonja Cooper's "Child Care-A Parent's Guide" which has a 1999 release to supplement current information. Both include state by state information, references, or websites in the back, which are good tools. Hope this helps!

I read several books on hiring a nanny, and this was the most comprehensive and well written resource I came across. I ordered it after speaking with the author on the telephone. I was very impressed by her during our conversation and remained impressed after reading her book. Finding and hiring the right nanny for your family is one of the most serious undertakings you will ever face. Cora Hilton Thomas gives you the information to tackle this task with confidence.

An entertaining horror book.

I loved the idea of this book before I even started reading it. A "special" school is created to experiment with making better students, and later citizens, by emotion control. They use a small chip inplant to do this. That right there is a good horror recipe. But it gets better when someone decides they want some revenge on the faculity. I recommend this book to all gory horror fans. Although i only gave it 4 stars because i thought the ending could have been a bit better, but still worth the read.

A Great Read! Hilarious.

The book documents the misadventures of a retired grandfather`s thirteen years as a full time nanny ("manny"?) for his grandchildren, starting with the six week old children of his twin daughters and continuing as they and their two siblings make their contributions, ultimately growing the brood to nine.

Now, I must confess to a slight lack of objectivity. ( I wrote the book...). Since Amazon doesn`t see fit to provide a synopsis, I see no harm in providing one myself, in a shameless attempt at self promotion.

Several readers contributed the "Great Read" and "Hilarious" descriptions. My conscious is clear....Really....

First Steps Toward Cultural Difference: Socialization in Infant Toddler Day Care
Published in Hardcover by CWLA Press (Child Welfare League of America) (1989-01)

An intriguing study.
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-12-22
Miller explores differences between expectations and socialization between children attending day care who hail from poverty (barely getting by/helped along by Social Services), middle class (teachers, janitors, salesmen, factory workers, etc.), upper class (doctors, lawyers, etc.), and ultra class (millionaires) homes.

After reading this qualitative study, you will see that expectations when children grow into adults and the necessary skills that will facilitate such a transition emerge as the main reasons why all children do not succeed in day care.

It's a superb read.
