I owe the library a fortune because I can't let go of this book! My day care is only a few weeks old and I'm still referring to C. Pruissen's book. I found the policies section got me writing my own Policies and Procedures Statement with confidence. She is detailed in her samples and advice so that every area of need is addressed thoroughly. Best book on the subject-and I've read many. Hope it's reprinted soon!

Making a Profit?

When it comes to making a profit.. the bottom line is budget.
Can you honesty say that children are not worth every penny?
NO.
This book has a reality to the cost effectiveness of running a
seldom lucrative business. Ideally this woud be the case if you
planned a business to take advantage of the core market. In this book the author is trying to guide would-be daycare providers in a more acceptable way to manage a daycare. It definitely takes time and money to nuture a child... but it also takes love, patience, understanding, determination, committment to guide children in everyday development. It is true that one should not take on the responsiblity of handling several children at one time unless their capable and willing to make everyday sacrifices.

I knew I wanted to start a home daycare when I got pregnant with my first child so I could stay home and enjoy her rather than going out to work. I came across Start and Run a Home Daycare on another Web site and knew I had to order it. Am I glad I did. This book took me through the process in a way that made a lot of sense. What I liked the most were the forms I could use to operate my daycare and the information on child development and child safety. Being a new parent I found this information most helpful. The book's inside design is also charming and the recipies and activities with each chapter are a nice touch. I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to start a daycare. It's my business bible.

Extremely helpful!

I have referred so often to this book the edges are tattered and worn. Besides being a great reference tool for working out my policy statement and my rates, the book took me through every step I needed to get my daycare home organized. Even helped me list all the supplies and furniture I'd need, not to mention all the safety issues and recipies it has. I simply won't part with my copy.

There are lots of good arguments against the widespread use of non-family childcare where there is not enough individual attention provided for young children to develop properly. This is not one of them.

This is a pop-psychology mish-mash with a very weird political agenda behind it. I wasted several days reading hoping that something would give it merit. In the end it was just time wasted. And this is coming from someone who agrees with the basic concepts! Yeah, it's that bad.

Confirming What I always Believed in my Heart

When I was in college studying to be a doctor I had to decide then about my future since more than being in medicine, I wanted to be a mother of a large family. Though I am sure many women doctors find it possible to juggle both, I knew that I wanted to be home for my children and that there was no way that I would put them in daycare.

Then, after four children I found myself as a single mom with no support from their father. I was sure I was going to have to put them in daycare, but due to prayer and determination (knowing deep in my heart that daycare ruins children), I was able to make enough money tutoring and again my children were spared.

All this determination was without reading this EYE OPENING book to the dangers and destruction of daycare in our society. I have seen the damage daycare (and simply not being with and bonding with their mother) with many children who are now needy and unable to bond properly as adults in marriage.

Before a child is sent to be cared for outside the home, and away from his mother, the parent should be required to read this book. Even mothers who have no support will find a way (as I did) when they realize the dangers are so great to their children and their future.

Come home Mom!

Here's a book that supports what we all know deep down: Moms are the best people to raise their children. Anything anyone can do to make it easier for Moms to be healthy at home would be welcome. The stonger the family, the stronger the nation. Conversely, the weaker the family, the weaker the nation. More than ever, with the barrage of media and other dangers, our homes need smart, savvy and confident Moms. Moms who follow their hearts, and spiritual promptings. Moms have more potential to influence their children than anyone else.
They are absolutely key to family stability. That is why the adversary tries so hard to undermine motherhood and the family. He is all too aware of the unfathomable power that they hold for good. Take note Dads! Help your wives to come home and tell them every day how fabulous they are (the world is not telling them this).

The Best Book I have ever read on the horrors of child care.

This book was so inspiring, it is a shame that this book is not on the best seller list. Each chapter is written by a different expert in the field of child care. From pediatricians to psychologist and even a child care czar that owns many day care institutions, they all agree of the damage that child care does to this precious individual trying to mature. It really is a must reading for any who have wondered what has happened to America and our children.

Although there is SOME good information in this book, I have 5 things in the first chapter alone marked in red letters "wrong." As a parent of three children on the spectrum, a speaker on the subject, an education advocate with a national certification, and a person with common sense, I found too many mistakes in this book to recommend it. I try to keep up on what is out there because I talk to parents regularly who have just received their diagnosis. I will loan out this one, because the corrections are in it. As I said, it does have some good parts, but it is scary if parents, and other people, are reading this and only this and taking it as accurate.

My first grandchild is autistic. At the time he was born I had never been around an autistic person. I have read book after book about this condition - some of them were helpful. However, this book helped me understand all of the different actions and reactions I was going to face with this beautiful little boy. The book takes you through each and every step, and makes you secure that you are able to handle appropriately what comes up each and every day. I so respect all of the patience and love shown by the parents of these special children. Without the organized way this book was written I felt lost. My thanks to the author! What a great and helpful book.

I picked up "The Everything Parent's Guide to Children with Autism" not as the parent of an autistic child, but as the aunt of one and as someone who wants to go into behavioral therapy/working with autistic children. However, there were many things I had yet to learn not only about autism itself but about how deeply it affects the lives of those around the child. I've been aware that it is certainly devastating for a parent to discover that his or her child is autistic, as I observed that myself, but I never realized the extent. I found myself really relating to everything that was said in this book. It certainly raises awareness to all aspects of autism and asperger's syndrome, from how it affects siblings, clarifying meltdowns vs. temper tantrums, helpful tips for improving communication skills, a child's specific rights to a free public education, etc. Despite the book's occasionally repetitive nature, it is very, very easy to understand and is perfect not only for a parent who has just been given the life-altering diagnosis of his or her child's autism, but for anyone who knows little about autism and cares to learn more. It uses everyday language and is extremely concise. Definitely, this is the book on autism to pick up (and pass on once you've read it).

The CD Rom book is not what I expected. It seems to be old computer technology (I can't believe it was published in 1999). I can get much more information on the Internet. It is cumbersome to "surf" and not very in-depth. I thought the "click" sites in the text of the Book would take one out on the internet, but it doesn't...just to other pages in the cd rom book. I am really sorry I invested the money, it is not a very good reference. The other program is to keep your pet's health records. I have three dogs, I have spent several hours trying to input the informtion, it has very small fields, will simply erase your input if the "field" is too small, and the choices cannot be modified or customized. In my opinion, if you are computer literate at all, don't get this book.

What a resource! I was impressed, and that is not easy!

Review of Family Vet:

I have never seen anything like this before. What a resource! I found this software to be very interesting and informative. I think my favorite part is the picture database. There were so many I couldn't believe they were all on that one CD. I mean I was just overwhelmed. If you have an interest at all in this subject or if you just have a dog you want to be better informed about his health this is for you, I think. It impressed me and I am not all that easy to impress. I mean when you can put in some symptoms and the software can give you potential diagnoses to ask your vet about...way cool! One way I found this practical was when I took my Pug in to see the vet. He was having some breathing difficulties, and my vet mentioned a couple things about the breed that I was able to go home and look up in the Family Vet. I mean, my vet is thorough and all but there is a difference between hearing something one time and being able to read and understand something at your leisure. Another cool thing is when my mother was thinking about getting a bulldog. I looked the breed up and was able to tell her what kinds of things the breed is known for like what diseases and conditions they are prone to. It was interesting to me just to read about the different breeds and see what the Family Vet has to say about them. If you want to know if a particularly pretty plant at the nursery would be harmful to your pet you can probably find it in the Family Vet too, and it will tell you whether or not it is safe. I mean, the list of things just goes on and on. My favorite part is still all the pictures, though, especially the x-rays (they are so neat!). I recommend this software. I think it is very inexpensive for all you get.

I am so happy there is something like this out there for me.

I have this CD. It has been so wonderful in helping me with any problems with my 3 dogs. Even if there are no problems..I refer to it. I've never come across anything more helpful than this CD. Even my own Veterinarian likes it. (I think I'll get him one) ;) There's even a place for their "health records" to be stored. That is a real help to me.

As owner of 5 cats and 3 dogs I am always looking for useful references and this beats them all! I was a little afraid to buy the cds after reading one review but I took a chance and boy ohh boy am I glad I did. It is super easy to use, written for normal people (like meself) and it has everything. The pictures and graphics are fantastic and I found the pet records keeper a very nice bonus an worked great..I have all my pets info in in an hour or so. I agree with the other good reviews and guess the guy/girl with the bad review just was having a bad day or something. For us average folk this was increadible. I have the cat cd too..I feel the cost is very reasonable for all you get. I am going to review the cat cd also.

Review Date: 2007-11-22
I read the other reviews, and, though they range from great to bad, they are all correct, depending on what you are looking for. I was required to buy this book for a class, and was pleasantly surprised to find it quite readable. There are many ideas in it for pulling existing staff together and creating a cohesive community for your center. Other ideas include actually changing the physical environment of the center to make it more child-friendly. While being a tad politically correct, most of these ideas are well thought out.
If, however, you are looking for the nuts and bolts of running a daycare, such as budgeting, hiring staff, ordering supplies, and producing meals for the children, you will be greatly disappointed, as none of this exists. The authors even state as much in the first chapter (and often thereafter!).
So, if you are ready for an attitude or vision change at your daycare, or just want some great ideas and encouragement for the normal, everyday running of your place, this is a GREAT book. If you want to know HOW to run a daycare, this book isn't for you.

A Valuable Reference for New and Experienced Directors

During the past two years,I have often gone back to this book for support and suggestions. As a new director, I have found many helpful ideas for training and handling staff. One of the best suggestions was the reading of children's books at staff meetings. I have read these books or had staff read them. I often wish that there was a longer list of appropriate books to read to staff. At this time,I need to refer again to the community and parent relationships sections. It is an excellent book for new directors and experienced directors that are ready for the challenge of taking on new ideas. When starting my first year as director, my staff created a mission/vision statement for our preschool. We spent 2 days sharing our memories of childhood and our expectations and philosophies of early childhood education before we finalized this statement. A year later we reviewed it, which we will do annually. Thank you to these authors for this wonderful first step that helped to pull my staff together, something we all constantly and continually strive to do.

I have no idea whether the book is any good or not, but I would not suggest buying it through Amazon. I ordered this book when I was barely 2 weeks pregnant. Now I am 2 months pregnant and still have not received it. The shipping and delivery date have been changed either 2 or 3 times. My last shipping date was almost a week ago and my newest shipping date is over a month away. There is no point of buying a daily pregnancy journal if you are going to miss whole trimesters. Amazon has really screwed up on this one.
*** UPDATE*** I have decided not to cancel this order just to see when it would finally ship, after-all I do plan on having another baby someday!! I am now half a week shy of being 5 months pregnant, and I received an email today asking for my 4th or 5th approval (again) for delay in shipment and delivery. IF the book arrives within the new delivery dates, I should get my book at about 6 months (remember I ordered this book when I was 2 weeks pregnant). I am starting to get a kick out of this situation...
UPDATE***** Amazon has written me an email canceling this order because they can not acquire the book. I am 6 months pregnant, and this whole debacle has totally turned me off of Amazon considering that when I wrote an email to customer service about it they offered me $5.00 off of my next purchase, but when I went to pay it only applied $4.49 (not even enough to cover the shipping). I think I just may be done with Amazon altogether.

I used this book for my first pregnancy. I liked that it had everything organized by week, but the way it's designed, you can also just write a free form summary of the whole week. To me, that was better than writing daily. There's a notes section at the bottom of the page that lists weight, diet, exercise, habits and next dr's appt. It also shows development milestones for both mother and baby each week, as well as helpful hints. It also has six weeks worth of after-the-baby-comes pages.

I looked at other books available and decided to go with this one again. It's hardcover (not spiral or paperback) and is sturdy, plus why mess with a good thing?

It's going to be interesting for me to now go back and compare my new pregnancy to my old.

An ideal gift for first-time moms!

This pregnancy diary is divided into the three trimesters beginning with the first week of pregnancy and ending 6 weeks after birth. It gives a brief week-by-week synopsis of the changes the mother-to-be should expect to experience in her body along side a weekly summary of the baby's development. It also provides weekly helpful tips and hints on subjects such as lifestyle and alternative healthcare. There is a section for documenting weight, diet, excersise, habits and the next doctor's appointment. At the back of the book there is a small family tree as well as a place for ultrasound pictures and photographs. Overall, it is a delightful book with space for recording a few lines of writing from mom-to-be each day of this very exciting and memorable time.

Review Date: 1998-06-02
This book gives the reader the opportunity to have a little bit of everything. In addition to a structured and detailed fast, Serure provides the reader with many different exercises to invigorate, soothe, and release the spiritual and emotional selves, as well as the physical. The only criticisms would be that at times, it was necessary to hunt through the book for a certain piece of information (e.g. finding out when it's best to take apple cider vinegar), thus giving the book a disorganized feeling. Also, although Serure mentions many things, she fails to give details on how one might find out more if desired (e.g. mentioning longer fasts are better in the beginning of the season, but not giving any advice or recommendations on longer fasts). Lastly, as a beginner with fasting myself, I went through the program carefully, following every detail as closely as possible. It would have been helpful if Serure had given some general lists of substitutes or things that are acceptable to put in the juice/broth. Otherwise, this book was wonderful. It leads the reader gently through a brief juice fast with not only the necessary plans and details, but enough information to excite and inspire anyone to improve lifestyle and eating habits.

If you are a beginner like myself, this book may not give you everything you're looking for... There is a lot of information about fasting and fairly detailed guidelines on how to do a fast, but there is also a large amount of info about spiritual healing and other subjects that kind of turned me off. The information was a bit confusing for me to sort through (not well organized). I was looking for more of a text book and this is more like a chicken-soup-for-the-faster kind of book. I found a little bit more science in Paavo Airola's books as well as some helpful info in a pamphlet on cleansing that I got from one of the Wild Oats chain supermarkets. For some general information and one of many daily guides to a short fast this is an ok book, but if you're looking for more hard facts or need more instruction, I would check this out at the library, and use it as a supplement to other more focused books.

We used this book to prepare our two year old son for a transition to part time daycare. The text is clear and concise, a few lines per page with illustrations. The illustrations show ethnic diversity. The author avoids stereotypes, for example; the mother works as a car salesperson while the father is a teacher and there are male and female daycare workers. The book takes a young girl through her day at daycare and ends with mommys and daddys return. There are tips for parents at the end of the book.
