the book is really sweet, especially the connection between lila and little ellie mcmillan. But I think lila should have been more responsible and told someone right away that lila was hiding at her place, but I can see why it was hard for her to do that. All turns out well in the end though. I also find that the unicorn club books show a softer side of lila, and this book is a great example of that.

Review Date: 2008-07-28
Parental love for a child is one of the strongest emotional bonds. However, love alone does not guarantee a healthy, solid relationship or a happy, confident and well-adjusted child. And isn't that what you want the most? Dr. Frank Lawlis shows you how to channel your love so that you can be a successful parent. Each chapter focuses on one of the 10 steps Lawlis suggests to build, reshape and strengthen the bonds between you and your child. His steps include learning effective communication, managing behavioral challenges, and developing the ability to cooperate, heal and forgive. The book overflows with helpful quizzes, exercises and real-life examples, adding structure and life to his advice. Although Lawlis crafts his plan to fit a 90-day schedule, getAbstract suggests that parents seeking guidance concentrate on the chapters that address their specific concerns.

This book is a favorite of mine when I work with child care providers - it now has set a standard for local providers' interactions. Local providers are still being subjected topunitive frameworks, but the ones who have this book know the difference and aren't afraid to tell other trainers that "that won't fit into my positive discipline toolbox!"

I was looking for a book that would help me come up with ideas for daycare. I was tired of time-out and I hated the fact that I followed the same routine day after day. This book allowed me to shake it up a little. Allowed me to get a better insight of what daycare should be about and reminded me how important these little ones are. Highly recommended for people starting up daycares!

This is the best book written on Miami so far. An excellent read, and reread.

A revised edition is needed, but until one comes along this book provides the best insights in Miami printed so far.

The book is physically beautiful too.

Try to get a copy with a cover in good condition. It's worth the little extra.

Insightful & well-written -- where's the sequel!

T.D. Allman's 1987 book "Miami -- City of the Future" is a thoughtful and original perspective on modern Miami (post-riots, post-Mariel). Allman is not a resident, so he's able to look at the city's complex social and political fabric with an objective eye.

The book is not organized chronologically nor by subject matter, which may test the patience of some readers. But I found Allman's style and substance unique and insightful. For example, he points out the irony of refugees so desperate for a chance at a new life that they will actually *swim* to Miami, contrasted with the "utter weariness of life" that you find in so many Miami residents. Allman writes poetically of Miami as a place that draws people with dreams, people who long to reinvent themselves. He includes stories of people from all walks of life -- one is struck by how similar the winners & losers are; their disillusionment and loneliness is haunting. I could relate to Allman's evocative descriptions of Miami's allure -- the beauty, diversity, and danger of the Magic City.

The unfortunate thing is that the book is now so dated. Part of that is, of course, not the author's fault -- Miami has changed and continues to change very rapidly. Many of the things that Allman writes about, such as the white good ol' boy political power structure, no longer exist. Allman's blithe assurance that the massive influx of immigrants would become thoroughly Americanized is not evident in present-day Miami. It's also unfortunate that Allman writes so extensively of the "Miami Vice" tv series, which further dooms the book to period-piece status. I would welcome an update or even a sequel to this book.

I purchased this when I was trying to locate a new living space for my elderly mother-in-law. As she was living in the San Francisco area and I was coming in from Wisconsin, it was extremely difficult to collect good information, but this book really helped me narrow down the choices. I would have given this five stars, but the binding was inadequate and I ended up relying on a large rubber band to hold all the pages in the book!

Useful San Francisco Bay Area Long Term Care Guide
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-10-01
This is a very useful, objective resource guide for finding the best in long term care (LTC) options in the Greater San Francisco Bay Area (apparently the East Bay has a separate guide and I believe the Guide is expanding to other cities, as well). The guide is a comprehensive overview of all of the local LTC services and facilities; chapter One describes the various functions of home care, geriatric care management, adult day care, assisted living facilities, continuing care communities, skilled nursing facilities and hospice, specifying what each does and what to expect.

Chapter Two is particulary useful, in that it describes "who pays for what" - listing different ways of paying for LTC, costs and eligibility requirements of various forms of coverage, and which facilities and services accept which form of payment. It even lists local phone numbers.

The rest of the Guide is by County: San Francisco, San Mateo, Marin and Southern Napa and Sonoma Counties. (As someone who covers all of Napa and Sonoma counties, this was my only frustration - not having the northern areas covered). Each listing includes detailed information, including costs, unique qualities and a personalized in-depth review.

The Guide is appropriate and useful for both professionals and family members overwhelmed by choices. I hope they are able to expand into other communities - there is a real need for objective, thorough and informational, locally-based guides to long term care options.

I loved Nightmare in Heaven (Teen Angels, No 5) by Cherie Bennett and Jeff Gottesfeld. I think it was an outstanding book, as well as the other books in that series. I just recently picked up all six of the Teen Angels Books at the library, and I read them all and loved all of them. For two or three days I was completely engrossed inthese remarkable books. I went back to the library upon completing the books, and I was incredibly disappointed to note that only those six books were available. I think this whole entire series is outstanding, and I highly recommend it to any teenage girl, whether this is your "type" of book or not. As I said, I absolutely adored the series, and I strongly encourage Cherie and Jeff to continue using their apparent talent in these books. As a "book-aholic" I absolutely have to know what is going to happen to Nicole, Cisco, Melody, Scarlett, and all the others. Please don't let me down!!!!!!!! I love these books, and I believe that Cjerie and Jeff are incredibly talented writers. Whether they choose to continue this series or choose to use their talents on other stories, I wish them all the best!!!

This book is excellent in many ways. It presents literary ruminations, a description of adolescent ambition, and prep school life tied together by a plot which culminates in a very interesting ending. Tobias Wolf is a master of the short story who uses those skills to fine advantage in this novel.

This book was on my teenagers' high school Summer reading list. I picked it up and started reading a few pages out of curiosity and was immediately hooked. There are real-world moral lessons in this book; "real-world" because they are messy, convoluted, and open-ended, but utimately this book satisfies and has the reader slowing down to read and digest every word in the last few pages. Highly recommended!

This is an excellent story, it is a excellent book and something the I will stop by the bookshelf, pull out, and read a passage at random. I won't comment on Wolff's writing ability, that is well established, but he does everything that helps bring you into a story and keep you there until the end.

I don't know the technical difference between a short story, a novella, or short novel but this book is on the shorter side and you can probably read this through in a couple of hours. It is well worth it.

Though I attended boarding school and can relate to the experiencesI have no trouble recommending this to anyone because Wolff brings the color and texture of that era (1960), of boading school, and of the narrator seemlessly.

It amazes me that there is no 'Search Inside the Book' feature for this book, the first paragraph itself is just magnificent.

I entered the world of `Old School' expecting to find what I found in every other book we had to read for school. Difficult language, symbolism lurking behind every corner, and a confusing plot to follow. Tobias Wolff did not write your average core English book. `Old School' caught me by surprise and actually gave me something to think about.
One of the most interesting things about this particular novel is that the narrator remains completely nameless throughout the whole story. He is never called on by a teacher and none of his schoolmates call his name (at least not that we hear). This both annoyed me and compelled me to keep reading. Mystery or an unknown aspect of a character easily draws readers in. I also realized (completely by accident) that not giving the readers the name of the main character, Wolff was giving our narrator even more of a `mask' to wear. He has been living a lie for such a long time that his own name gets caught up in it.
All of the main characters in `Old School' are very different, but I managed to connect with all of them. George Kellogg is the `good guy' of the group. He tries to please everyone and the narrator "never heard him say a hard word about anyone" (10) and he becomes very upset when he sees any of his classmates teasing someone. Bill White is the main character's roommate, but we don't see as much of him as the other characters. From what the narrator tells us, Bill is a studious honor roll student who also has a literal mask over his face (although Bill's wasn't acquired on purpose). Jeff Purcell is another main character in Old School, but he isn't the only Jeff Purcell. His cousin attends school with him as well and because their names are identical, our narrator's friend is `Little Jeff', while his cousin is `Big Jeff' (even though neither one is abnormally large or small. The narrator and his friends simply call him Purcell). Purcell is definitely the delinquent of the group and pretty much the opposite of George. He criticizes everyone's work extremely harshly and tends to curse a lot as well.
The only part of `Old School' I disliked was the ending. The rest of the book was nicely paced and had a good combination of dialogue and just straight prose, but the ending was simply Mr. Ramsey telling the narrator about Dean Makepeace. It seemed like Wolff was just coasting; not really putting any effort to make the reader want to read more.
But that's a minor detail.
Overall, Tobias Wolff's `Old School' was one of my favorite book I have read this year, not just in English, but in my free-time as well.

Wolff is a masterful conductor

Review Date: 2008-04-24
Early in Tobias Wolff's novel, Old School, the never-named first person narrator introduces the tradition of a literary contest that poses as the text's central line of suspense. But bubbling beneath this contest is a clutter of additional themes, tensions, and perturbations that converge in a three-chapter swirl in the middle of the novel to comprise the text's climax.

You will feel the living presences of Robert Frost, Ernest Hemingway, and Ayn Rand in this book. At the same time Wolff draws in and excites readers who are familiar with these authors, he employs the famous authors huge personalities to interest and inform less familiar readers as well.

The book is an exploration of gender and sexuality, Judaism, truth to one's self, the value of scholarship, literature, and the struggle to create, and like a masterful conductor, Wolff expertly manages these themes towards a beautiful convergence in the climax of the novel.

If I had been able to check this out of a library near me I might have done that and used the money to buy craft supplies instead, but I didn't have that option and am not sorry I purchased this book. It's important to know up front that many of these ideas are extremely simple and common sense, but in flipping through the book I have found new activities I hadn't thought of before.

I'm a stay-at-home mother and I wanted some sort of inspiration for those days when I'm uninspired or tired after a difficult night, and this book does that for me. I received the book, sat down and started reading it; I'm not yet finished but after 10 minutes I had a list of 17 things we could do together when the moment is right. It's true that some of the suggested activities I had already thought of and many of them you could probably find for free on the internet if you are willing to spend the time looking for them, but I really wanted a quick-and-dirty resource that I can pick up and use at a moment's notice for those days that I really need it. The ideas are basic, but for me they serve as a springboard and I found myself thinking of ways to alter the activities in ways that would suit me and my daughter better.

My main criticism is that I was really disappointed in the section on food and don't see myself using any of those ideas -- ever. Those really need to be updated.

The title of this book is what got my attention. I was very pregnant and extremely exhausted when I found it and I was not looking forward to potty training my very difficult 3 1/2 year old son. I picked up the book thinking I'd use it after the new baby had arrived and things had settled down, but that was not to be. My MIL called wanting to know how the potty training was going and that was it. We knew she wasn't going to let up.

Soooo, I started planning our potty party, fully expecting to fail miserably. We couldn't find the peeing doll, improvised on the dolly underwear by cutting off the toes of my husband's old socks and snipping each corner off for the dolls legs to fit through and we weren't able to get everyone out of the house during the day, but other than that, we stuck to the book as closely as we could.

The day came for my son's Lightning McQueen party and despite my husband's awesome decorating job that he pulled off BY HIMSELF while the rest of us were sleeping, things didn't start off too great. When it came time to pop the videos in, the first couple bombed and I was ready to give up. However it came time to try a video again, we slipped Potty Power - For Boys & Girls into the player and even though my son tried to resist, it was futile. He couldn't stop himself from singing along with the various potty songs which just happened to correspond quite nicely with Teri Crane's book.

By the end of the day, my son was throwing away his diapers and putting forth a real effort to get to the potty on time. Within a week or two he was dry all day.

He did continue to have accidents at night, but once we figured out he had a gluten intolerance and cut dairy, wheat, corn and peanut butter out of his diet, he stopped wetting the bed!

I think this book and Potty Power were the perfect combination for my son's needs.

This Dad's struggle is finally OVER!!!

Men's Health magazine wrote a 3 page article on this book in their Sept. '08 issue.

I was so desperate to finally try a book that really worked! Too many of the potty training books out on the market today all rehash the same "old" tired toilet training tips. Teri Crane's book is unique in its ideas and a great read. Her secret is to throw a potty party. And if you think about it--what child doesn't love to play and pretend. With a few decorations that my son Nicolas loved, he became putty my instructional hands. And the best part--I didn't have to spend a lot of money. My son was having such a blast during our potty party--he didn't even realize he was being toilet trained.

I read a few of the unfavorable reviews for this book and am really glad I kept an open mind. You can make this whole experience as lavish or economical as you wish. We probably spent about $40 on the entire party. Trust me, $40 is nothing compared to the $800 or more we were spending on disposables every year!

The whole idea of making potty training "fun", is simply brilliant! As a Dad, I can honestly say I was dreading the whole idea of potty training. But this book actually made it a great bonding experience with me and my little guy.

Some people just don't get it. This book is not just about dieting, but improving your life and living healthy. Like Marilu said "Everything is connected to Everything". I never believed in this theory, but after reading the book.. I have definitely changed my mind.
All I have to say is that this book has definitely made a difference in my life. I am much more organized now. I hear people complaining that who needs a lesson in how to organize your closet. Well, seems like I surely did.

And for those who don't like the food.. hey you don't have to follow the program to the T. Listen to your body and see what's best for you. I made some changes since I don't like fish that much.. and it works.

Thank you Marilu..

Marilu's first "Total Health Makeover" book was a revelation to me, and I have changed my eating habits ever since. I stick to almost all of her steps, but not all. When this book came out, I ran out immediately and bought it, but found it a bit disappointing. Although I do enjoy her organizational and spa tips, I find the 30-day program to structured for me to follow. I do incorporate many of her guidelines into my daily life, but just can't stand to be so regimented, with daily recipes to follow, etc. I have lifted some of the recipes, but overall, I find her "Healthy Life Kitchen" book a more enjoyable read with better recipes. For those interested in the background and rationale behind Marilu's eating program, I recommend her first "Total Health Makeover" book, unless you are a diehard Marilu fan.

I have worked with a nutritionist several times in the past. This book summarizes everything the nutritionist told me AND MORE!

It explains how to combine foods to make them work most efficiently for your body. So you can eat whatever, as long as you combine wisely, like having a protein and carb for dinner, but do not have a starch with it. Have a starch separately. And do not drink just before or during a meal since it waters down the enzymes that assist in digesting food. Neat!!

And you can't beat the price! Best $.. I've ever spent!

Review Date: 2001-11-23
I don't object to what the author says so much as what she leaves out. She makes many assertions, but usually fails to give support or references for them. I would find her much more convincing if, instead of saying "Milk is toxic sludge that only cows should eat! YUCK!" (paraphrasing here, sorry) she would list some of the studies that have proved this to be true. I could even like the "YUCK!" if she had any proof of the fact behind it. While I admire her attempt to change the standard American diet, I found this book to be, frankly, something of an insult to my intelligence.

Because it is a potentially good springboard to more advanced books, I must grudgingly give this two stars. However, if you're interested in a more healthful, vegetarian diet and have the slightest interest in knowing *why* these choices are better, I strongly recommend skipping this and instead buying John Robbins' "Diet for a New America" or any of Dr. Andrew Weil's books, particularly, "Eating Well for Optimum Health."

I first heard about Marilu's book on my 30th birthday, when she was interviewed on an Atlanta radio station. I was ready for a change and decided to buy her book. I quickly found that Marilu's Health Makeover is not just another diet. This is a lifestyle that will totally change the way you think about food. Take a look at Marilu Henner, she radiates health and birthed 2 children over the age of 40. How? Marilu believes that with good health, you can do anything! The plan is easy to get started and follow, I think it's great if you love to cook.

Marilu won't win any awards for her writing, but her style is easy to follow and at times funny. The key is, she keeps you reading, inspires, and appeals to a broad audience.

If you are looking for a new way of eating, looking, and living, you should definitely pick up a copy of "Total Health Makeover".
