I purchased this book to compound on the basic sign language I was using with my daughter. Although able to hear, I found that sign language gave her a means of communication at a much earlier age which decreased frustration for the both of us. By the time I was using the information from this book, she was speaking (or at least able to communicate with me) and the book became much more useful at the Pediatric hospital I work at. The book is now part of our library, for reference, when working with the deaf children on our floor. The book is easy to understand and covers many of the words and phrases we convey everyday to small children.

I originally purchased this book to compound on the basic sign language I had already taught my one year old daughter. Although she is able to hear, sign language reduced the amount of frustration in trying to communicate verbally, since sign language was easier to learn. I found that by the time we were able to work on larger phrases, she was speaking (or at least able to communicate her wants and needs) and the book was unnecessary. I do, however, find the book useful at the Children's hospital I work at. It contains easy to understand phrases that we use everyday with small children. The book now has a permanent home on our floor for all of the nurses to use.

We also have three older children learning ASL and this book is very easy for them as well as adults (we have found that sometimes it's harder for adults to learn a new language!) to follow. It contains the alphabet as well as catagorized topics that sitters (or non-signers) can easily turn to and sign to other hearing impaired individuals. This little book has been a very helpful tool in our home and has made our transition into the deaf language a little smoother.

I found the diagrams in this book difficult to follow, and it didn't contain some words I wanted to learn, while it did contain some I would be unlikely ever to need. Also, the signs are NOT ASL but Signed English. However, I have seen other books in this series at the bookstore, and I might buy the ones on food or school. This book, however, I didn't keep.

Although Dr. Day is a dermatologist, I must say the information in her book was mundane and certainly not very new information. What was informative was her section on rejuvenation techniques that are presently available. Her focus on attitude, diet, makeup, and style brought nothing new to the table. Her section on hair loss was inadequate. This information should have been a 25 page pamphlet but certainly not a book. I will commend her for not hawking her skin care line too heavily like others have done (does Perricone ring a bell?). Just not very revolutionary.

Dr. Day's book can best be described as inspiring. It not only does justice to your skin (yes, it really will look that much better if you follow her recommendations), but it is guaranteed to also change your life for the better. Her three 'R's (read the book), nutritional and facial product recommendations, as well as so many other valuable pearls, made a huge difference in the appearance of my skin in just two weeks, not to mention creating a happier medium for myself. This book is highly recommended, and is one of the best on the market that I've read for benefiting one's overall health, with results of looking like way more than a million bucks!

"Subtract Years From Your Appearance Change Your Life," proclaims the author of the book 'Forget the Facelift.'

The title and back cover caption could not be more appropriate. The promise delivers, if you follow the program detailed in this book.

Firstly, Dr. Doris J. Day is one of the few doctors around that is in the medical field for the right reasons. I am fortunate enough to reside in New York City and be a patient in her private practice.

Secondly, Dr. Day believes in good health; physical health being equally important to emotional health--the introduction is entitled, "Beauty isn't only skin-deep." She discusses how the stresses of modern life can substantially take it's toll on one's skin. Sample menus, recipes-for meals and additionally for do-it-yourself skin treatments, facial exercises, fashion tips, and obviously a specific skin regimen and education targeting skin saboteurs are all included in this book!

Thirdly, I don't know too many dermatologists and/or plastic surgeons that don't "over prescribe." Dr. Day is rather conservative, insomuch that she would suggest surgery as an exception rather than the rule, potentially not even as an alternative treatment because it is not necessary.

Good skin does not need to be costly, or overly time consuming. Coincidentally, or rather brilliantly, Dr. Day also has created a skincare line simply called 'Good Skin.' Clean, easy, simple skincare.

Having radiant, glowing skin needn't be complicated, and 'Forget the Facelift' is a testament to that statement.

I loved this book

Dr. Doris Day promised a younger me in 2 weeks with just simple lifestyle changes. Until I saw the results first hand, I doubted the possibility, as anyone would. I was surprised to find that these changes were not painful resolutions or deprivation; they felt more like self indulgences.

In her refreshingly smart and insightful book, Forget the Facelift , Dr. Day helps us confront the fact that dealing with life's stress is not easy but basically unavoidable in today's world. She explains how physically and emotionally there are saboteurs at every turn and navigating them is easier with a little professional medical advice as well as some sound ideas on treating yourself better. She gives us examples of how she has helped many of her own patients look years younger even before they had any treatment in her office.

But don't be fooled by the spiritual side of this brilliant doctor; her book is filled with medical and technical answers to questions we all have, written in a way that we can understand and use to our benefit. Understanding the physiology of skin really increases awareness of what damages us and what helps us glow. She lists ingredients to look for in beauty products when faced with the confusing array of choices. In addition, she includes what can cause problems and what her favorites are. She names names - there's no hiding from Dr. Day.

She also provides time saving skin care routines, quick ways to eat healthy meals, an explanation of ingredients, vitamins and supplements allowing you to figure things out on your own. These are all ways Dr. Day helps you become educated in looking great.

And finally, if all of her `pearls of wisdom' leave you still wanting more youth, she gives straight forward information on some basic skin enhancing procedures and treatments such as peels, botox, fillers, laser treatments, the thread lift and other new and non invasive (doable at lunchtime) procedures that you might want to consider.

Dr. Day has packed a great deal of valuable information in to a quick read. Take my word for it, it is well worth your time.

A Flawed, But Useful Instrument
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2005-10-23
I underwent ECERS-R evaluation using this same instrument when I worked in a poor, predominantly Black elementary school. I have concluded that this instrument, though thorough and insightful, somewhat downwardly grades poverty-stricken classrooms by pointing out what they don't have (and often can't get due to financial constraints). On the other hand, it rewards more affluent school districts due to their ability to supply more materials, resources, and equipment.

Even though I find it easy to follow, it allows way too much subjectivity for the assessing agent. How you rate my DISCIPLINE and STAFF-CHILD INTERACTIONS would depend on your experiences as a teacher in a certain cultural context. An assessor who mastered his classroom managing skills under the guise of a school district in a community devoted to authoritative discpline may misinterpret the cues in an authoritarian-dominated classroom as "inappropriate". In reality, appropriateness and inappropriateness depend on one's cultural context even with buttressing empircal research. For some people, authoritative classroom management allows children to "run wild", "control the classroom", and "do what they want to do too much".

To ensure the proper use of the instrument, administrators should:

1. Ensure that his teachers possess a copy of the ALL ABOUT THE ECERS-R companion book which details step-by-step how to put together an ECERS-R classroom.

2. BEFORE the official assessment, direct teachers to do an ACCURATE, well-guided, appropriately-paced self-study of their classroom.

3. BEFORE the official assessment, support the teacher's suggestions and requests to pull their classrooms up to ECERS-R standards.

4. BEFORE the official assessment, stay mindful of the things that a teacher can control and which things the principal can only control.

5. AFTER the official assessment, support the teacher's need to fix deficiencies.

6. AFTER the official assessment, make a concerted effort to fix the deficiencies that stand out of the teacher's hands.

In the end, all early childhood professionals should realize that a developmentally appropriate classroom doesn't begin and end with the ECERS-R despite its well-earned reputation.

Please use proper, realistic discernment.

I would suggest buying two books (if no others) on designing early childhood environments: Kritchevsky's/Prescott's PLANNING ENVIRONMENTS FOR YOUNG CHILDREN PHYSICAL SPACE and this one.

Isbell moves you through ever meticulous detail to designing the class, from setting up your mental/education viewpoint to understanding appropriately scaled furniture for the correct child age.

Highly, highly recommended because I used this book as my instruction manuel for constructing my well-reviewed Pre-K classroom.

Some good ideas, but utimately lacking
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2007-05-28
First the good: The book has pleanty of creative ideas, like using see-through jars and storage units so kids could awe the materials they're about to choose. There are also tons of neat ideas for making storage racks out of hangers and plastic bottles.
Now, the not so good. The authors base their work on the Reggio Emilia school system in Italy. However, they never show a picture of these superb Italian schools and the philosphy behind these schools is generalized.
In an an ideal world, all of our preschool centers would look like the ones written about in this book. However, the authors never take into consideration that the majority of teachers are constrained by budget. They can't buy nearly half of the material the authors suggest for each center. The ideal centers in the book, roughly sketched, are huge and if they were paired all together, the preschool would be the size of a grocery store.
The book continues to be very general and never dives into the detail about design. Instead it tells you, for example, in the area of color, to buy a color wheel and learn how to use it. I would think the purpose of buying this book would be that I would learn every thing possible from the book and not have to find extra resources, until the book was exhausted.
The book goes on to say that every child learns differently at certain ages, but I think it's safe to say that boys in general learn differenlty from girls. The book doesn't mention how to design a center if you have 14 boys and three girls in the room or how to accomodate learning preferences.
Finally, the authors never consider culture as one aspect to designing a preschool center. How can a center reflect a child's home culture and language?

I really wanted to enjoy this book. The interwoven subjects of soccer and sex and soccer moms sounded irresistible. And, for the first 3/4 of the book it was very difficult to put the book down as it was so entertaining and spot on with it's depiction of the mania known as youth soccer.

But somewhere along the way the authors lost focus and the last few chapters of the book are about as compelling as watching paint dry. They became predictable and slogging. I finally gave up in the last two chapters and skipped to the end.

I also must say that the book focuses UNNECESSARILY so on some unflattering stereotypes and one can almost detect a certain hostility about a certain group that felt more sincere than mere fiction. I did not appreciate that aspect of the book one bit.

All in all, it was an entertaining, if not informative, read on the ins and outs of youth soccer, a scattered almost categorical listing of sexcapades within the lives of the various characters, and an ending that read more like a 'to do' list than a story of the lives of characters who should matter but in the end don't.

After inheriting some old furniture that had belonged to my late grandmother, I invested in 2 books about repairing/restoring furniture...this one and the one written by Brian Hingley. Both are good books, but this one was written by Albert Jackson and David Day, who live in England. Some of the terms are different than what we are used to in America. For example, the authors explain how to make your own cleaning solution using linseed oil and 'white spirit'. I'm not sure if their reference to white spirit means regular mineral spirits or something else like acetone or naptha. In another section, they cover the repair of cracks, dings, holes and other surface imperfections using 'stopper'. Most folks will easily recognize this as what we call wood putty or filler.

This isn't to slam the British, just to point out that some of the terminology and names used in this book may throw some people off. Even some of the terms used for various parts of a piece of furniture are different. Not to worry, since there's lots of four-color illustrations to guide you, although I prefer the color photos used in Hingley's book.

One final note: Most of this work seems centered around the repair and restoration of chairs and tables, although many of the tips and methods can be applied to many types of furniture. If chairs and tables are your particular forte or speciality, this might be the book to go with.

Hope this info helps.
