Yes, it was illegal to be a Catholic, ordered by King Henry VIII following the imprisonment of Queen Anne. It has been illegal to be Catholic/Christian in more than one country at more than one time. There have been many symbols over the years to practice Christianity in secret as there are today in the Middle East. What a terrific education for today's Christians and/or Catholics to not take Christianity for granted.
This book is a wonderful lesson in religious tolerance.

This book is absolutely wonderful! It will bring a whole new meaning to your Christmas celebration. The book, giving an explanation of the traditional song, truly identifies the important elements of our faith. I plan on using each year with my class as we prepare for the birth of Christ.

This book is misleading...

I have read this book, done some research, and have found that there is no basis for this meaning of the song. It supposedly was sung by Catholics at the time to celebrate their faith in disguse, but nothing related in the book could reveal the person to be Catholic, even if you knew the "hidden meaning". Also, it was never specifically illegal to be Catholic in England, although for a time it was unwise. Just wanted to set the record straight.

I have been involved with Steiner/Waldorf School for many years, and due to our current location have begun homeschooling. When you take that step on your own sometimes you require a little support and guidance. For me this book has been exactly that. I wish I had known about this book years ago. We, as a family, are enjoying Shea's perspective.

Seven Times The Sun is not for everyone. It could be a springboard, offering times of the day and night where parents might want to incorporate some kind of rituals to provide their children with a stable and balanced life. But the songs, poems and traditions offered in Shea Darian's book are hokey and contrived at best, cumbersome and artificial at worst. None of the other reviews indicated the religious or spiritual aspect of the book. Darian is a minister, and all of the poems and songs have a subtle religious bent. True, parents should teach children to be thankful for all they have. But I'm just thankful Amazon has a customer-friendly return policy!

This was a very beautiful and peaceful book that came in a time when it was very much needed. It helped me slow down and understand that every day is very spiritual; that life maintenance is a part of who we are and if we just accept that, it makes everything much more simple. It helped me enrich my children's life, to finally accept them for whom they are and in so doing enrich my own life. Besides, if you have a little chant or song to sing while you're doing chores, handwork, settling down for a nap, or whatever, it always helps make it more fun. And I liked the tips and ideas on how to incorporate different rituals into your day. This book won't be for everyone, or for every lifestyle, but for those it speaks to, it is wonderful book. I highly recomend it.

This book was recommended by an instuctor of an early childhood class I am taking. I love the easy and quiet way that the writings take the reader through the day, year and life. While reading this book, my grandmother passed away. The pages of poems were great comfort to my family and myself. Thank you to Shea Darian for the peace her words brought to us.

I ordered this book for a night class and I have to say that it is serving its purpose. However the only problem was the price$$. It is way to expensive considering the older edition (used) goes for about $30 or less and is only missing about 9 of the vocabulary words found in the new book.

I was required to buy this book for my class. It is utterly boring. If I had trouble going to sleep, I just read this book. Some of the information is outdated (e.g. how the chicken pox vaccine should be given), as it's copyright is 2005, and the subject matter it contains on the health, safety and nutrition of the young child is constantly changing. The publisher needs to create a 7th edition and use different authors.

This textbook was required for completing prerequisites to obtain my Early childhood degree. But it was one helluva good book. The chapters were short so it was never overwhelming to read. At the end of each chapter were lesson plans and therein lies the gold at the end of this rainbow. This book is a treasure trove of easy lessons to implement in a preschool early childhood classroom. This is not just a fabulous textbook it is an amazing classroom and center resource.

Being the typical anxious parent with worries about daycare upon my return to work, I found Ms. Ehrich's information about researching daycare centers to be an invaluable part of her book. It was really a stress reducer. There were many valuable insights in a well written, easy to understand book. Being a NJ resident, I saw an article about Ms. Ehrich in a local newspaper whereby it mentioned the anxiousparents.com website. It is well worth a viist there too. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking to find stable, quality help with your daycare needs. It gave me the direction and confidence I needed, especially since I am a first time Mom.

I have read the book and am just embarking on my own search for quality childcare. I was surprised to read the review of another from NJ who said the book was not helpful for daycare situations. I am seeking a daycare center environment for my child and found the book invaluable. As this is my first, I am the anxious parent as described. Ms. Ehrich's book gave me the confidence and direction to channel my search in a productive and time-efficient way. The guidelines for daycare interviewing and selection focused me and gave me many things to investigate and interview for. Thank you Ms. Ehrich for this most valuable resource.

As an obstetrical nurse and working mom, I have both a personal and professional interest in childcare issues. Over the past ten years, I have read literally dozens of childcare help books. This book is by far the best - the most common sense, encouraging, informative and easy to use. It has a permanent place on my bookshelf - and I am telling all my patients about it too. If you are buying only one book on finding childcare, it should definitely be this one!

Unfortunately I found the book to be too slanted towards family home care or nannys - these are not viable options for everyone. I found there was no fair balance given to daycare centers. While the checklists/questions were comprehensive the author's overall condescending tone put a damper on the information presented. For anyone whose main alternative is a daycare center, this is not the book for you - save your money.

I've used this book for years. It gives me new ideas to try with my kids...and they work. The chapters are divided into time-frames of a minute or two, half an hour, over the weekend and so forth, so I pick one to meet the time I have. No book like it comes close in helping me show my children I love them.
Thanks....to Susan Newman!

This book is organized in time slots. Do you have 5 minutes -- here are ways you can make your child feel special. 30 minutes? Here are some different ways. And so forth. Some ideas you will probably have already come up with on your own -- or read elsewhere -- but many were innovative.

Not For Stay At Home Parents

Review Date: 2005-05-19
I think there should be some sort of qualification on this book that it is geared for parents who both work full time outside the home and spend most of their day away from their children. The book is written to help these "busy parents" [what parent isn't busy?! LOL!] fit "quality time" in for their children - and it is broken down into 5 minute or less things to do, half hour things, weekend things etc.

I think this book would be really helpful to parents who didn't have much time to spend with their children. But, for a stay at home parent or a homeschooling parent, it is essentially useless in my opinion.

Most of the things that would be appropriate for a full time parent are things that a stay at home parent is probably already doing [common sense stuff]. The rest is not geared for those who stay home with their children. [for example, the tip to "write a letter to your child's teacher on the first day of school and let them know you want to be involved even though you are a working parent".]

So, personally, as a stay at home mother, I was dissappointed. I feel like I spent money on a book full of stuff that either doesn't apply to our situation or is stuff that I already DO intuitively with my children.

Valuable Suggestions for Sensitive Parenting

This book is a wonderful resource for parents that provides a plethora of ideas and valuable inspiration on how to establish meaningful ties and a strong connection with their children that will last a lifetime. The premise is to offer a "think tank" for parents to find ways to be involved in their children's lives and to establish as many connections with them on a daily basis as possible regardless of how busy and hectic the family routine may be. Although the book is full of suggestions and ideas to do just this, I was a bit disappointed that they were listed in small vignettes in an almost laundry list fashion. I would've enjoyed more detail and depth as well as an easier way of navigating the book to find ideas. I find chapter titles such as "weekend fun" and "five minutes more or less" to be a bit vague. All in all, most of us inherently know that the little things in life are what count the most and are most memorable and the ideas offered in this book, when put into use, will build fond childhood memories, solidify the parent-child bond, and nurture a warm, loving home life. I highly recommend this work to all families.

Want a feel-good romance? This is it! I had hoped the story would live up to the delightful cover--it does . . . and then some! You'll empathize with the hard-working heroine--and you'll laugh out loud at the children's antics--but what you'll really love is how they charm their way into a no-nonsense professor's heart.

For a perfect afternoon treat, grab a cup of cocoa, a pair of bunny slippers and nestle in with Barbara's book! I can't wait to read the next in the series!

An avid reader of christian fiction, this book didn't strike me at all. Although I've read previous books of Barbara Jean Hicks and found them highly entertaining I found "An Unlikely Prince" to be, well--just sappy. The "hero" is a staunch, tight professor who moves in next door to a woman who is starting a daycare center. He dislikes kids/she loves them and thus the attraction begins. I just didn't find the characters to be very developed and thought it was very slow and uninteresting.

A lot of parents think about opening a childcare center so that they can stay home with their kids and earn some money. Tina's book is a good resource if you are contemplating this move. The book starts off strong explaining the different kinds of centers you can operate- home-based, purchasing an existing center or starting a new center. And then offers pros and cons of each type.

She goes on to discusses general requirements you will need in order to get your state license for each type of center. Offers clear-cut examples of policies and various plans you should have in place like a fire evacuation plan and health and safety policies.

The prospect of opening your own business is always appealing. But as with any other business, a childcare facility, even a home-based one, will require money to operate. The book discusses financing options including opening a center onsite at major corporations in your community or city.

Lots of great little extras like a sample floor plan are included. The author also discusses how you can decide how much to charge and how to determine your rates (weekly or hourly). And of course, she gives you the lowdown on the pros and cons of each type of arrangement.

In the book you will also learn how to get reimbursed for the food you serve, how to hire employees, how to write drug policies, conduct staff meetings and honor your staff for their dedication and hard work. Other great advice you'll find include: tips for setting goals for your venture, creating a mission statement, establishing fees, and determining hours of operation.

The book even covers the pros and cons of offering an after school program- a good option as many parents work late and some schools don't offer these types of programs onsite. And discusses additional ways to make money including summer camps for kids too young to remain home alone while their parents work, and alternative hours of operation to accommodate parents who work different shifts (being open from 3 to midnight for example, or 24 hour care).

The books comes with an appendix fat with information and is written in a friendly relaxed writing style that flows across the pages and makes the book an easy read. You could probably finish it in a few sessions.

Tina Musial's How to Open & Operate a Financially Successful Child Care Service takes the overwhelming task of starting a daycare and breaks it down into the basics. It covers many aspects of owning and operating a daycare - from federal and local regulations to decisions about caring for children with disabilities to which services to offer to how to be an employer - that many individuals may not otherwise consider until they are immersed in the running of a child care service.

How to Open & Operate a Financially Successful Child Care Service starts at the beginning - from reasons why many individuals choose to start a daycare - to the continued development and accreditation of an established child care service and provides pros and cons for many of the options. Musial includes case studies with individuals who have been there, done that, in order to provide further prospective, as well as offering practical, no nonsense advice on how to make a child care service a save and positive experience for the children, staff, parents, and owner.

A Truly Comprehensive Guide

Tina Musial's guide to opening and operating your own childcare center is a concise work. Everything you need to know from common sense ideas to the bare bones that each center, large or small, consists of is all in this easy to read book.

Broken down into three parts Musial shares her expertise and wisdom compiled from many years in the industry with her readers. This book is full of information. What I liked most about this book was how Musial forces the reader to ask questions about why they want to open a childcare center, what type of personality they are and why that is important and determines what size center you should strive to operate. Each section has a clearly laid out set of pros and cons, samples of letters, real life scenarios, forms and more. There are checklists, examples of budgets and loads of reference information per state. Musial does not gloss over any of the aspects of owning and operating a childcare center. She forces the reader to take control of each avenue and path they will walk down as they being their journey and create his or her own business.

From how to interview staff and families, to increasing pay and raising rates this book has it all. It makes an excellent reference guide for those just starting out and those already in the business. The Appendix alone with its state-by-state references is worth the price of the book. If you are thinking of opening your own childcare center or simply need a refresher course or new ideas for a childcare center you already own then look no further than this book.

Tina Musial's "How to Open and Operate a Financially Successful Child Care Service" is the complete guide for anyone looking to open and operate a child care service. Building a child care service is difficult business, but Musial spells out in her book all the pitfalls, obstacles, guidelines, issues, and success that can be found when venturing into running a child care service.

Something I like very much about Musial's book is that she explains in detail not only the "common sense" things anyone would imagine encountering in child care, such as child safety, keeping everything clean and sanitized, knowing who is dropping off and picking up the children in your care, and planing for emergencies, but also the things that do not enter one's mind right away, such as strategically marketing your service, planning events and parties for both the children and the staff, and even learning (ethical and fair) ways to save money on taxes. There is also a list of helpful resources for all fifty states.

Musial uses a very friendly, engaging tone in her work. There is a very thorough glossary in the rear of the book that explains all the important terms a person going into child care service should absolutely know, the book is divided into fifteen well-organized chapters, and Musial breaks down many of the common issues one will confront in opening and operating a child care business with easy to read "Pros" and "Cons" lists. I certainly recommend this easy-to-read and comprehensive guide to a person like myself who has virtually no idea what is entailed in starting and managing a child care service and also to those child-care professionals who are looking to refresh and update their knowledge base.

A Great Guide!

It's no wonder that the shortage of childcare facilities increases everyday. The red tape and unforeseen complications involved with opening and operating a daycare center turn away potential owners time and time again. However, there is hope for anyone determined enough to open their own daycare. Tina Musial is your beacon of hope as the author of How to Open & Operate a Financially Successful Childcare Service. This comprehensive how-to guide breaks down the complexities of day care ownership into simple and manageable steps, which most any one can implement.
From the very first chapter, Musial presents information that every potential child care owner should know, but didn't know who to ask for it. She covers the various standards and requirements child care centers must meet, and explains the proper paperwork that must be filed in order to do so. Many of the start-up steps she details are items that most would have NO CLUE needed to be completed in order to start a child care facility. Musial's attention to detail ensures that readers will be thoroughly informed of what to expect during the opening procedures.
Each aspect of obtaining ownership and opening a child care facility is covered in simplistic detail, but Tina Musial doesn't end her book after owners have opened their daycare doors. She further outlines essential knowledge needed to run a successful center well after opening day. From suggestions concerning what to charge patrons, what to feed the kiddos, and how to compete with both the fancy and low-cost daycares, Musial offers practical advice for every headache that owners could possibly encounter.
For anyone who has a dream of owning and effectively running a child care facility, Tina Musial's guide should be the daily handbook that you turn to for answers. This book receives five out of five stars for its amazing attention to detail, and its simplistic style and outline. How to Open & Operate a Financially Successful Childcare Service is a must-have for wannabe daycare owners!

Weighing in a nearly four pounds, this is one book that truly lives up to its name. I cannot ever recall seeing a resource book that had more ideas between the covers. There are action stories, fables, folktales, rhymes, puppet stories, listening stories, games, craft projects, recipes, dances, activities, and more. There are old favorites, new favorites, and everything in between.
The book is quite easy to navigate, thanks to the handy thematic chart as well as two unbelievably comprehensive indices. There is a general index as well as a theme index. Need an activity for shapes? Just look under the topic and you will find nearly fifty from which to choose. Want to explore outer space with your students by way of a folktale? Photocopy the story patterns found in the appendix, trace them onto interfacing, color, and put them on flannel board. Now you're all set for "The Sun and the Moon," a short pourquoi. Can't remember the words to "This Old Man?" They're in here. Need a recipe for soap crayons? Snow dough? Wheat paste? They're in here too. As I sat with my colleagues viewing the book, I challenged them to think of a every early childhood game they knew of. No one thought of a game that was not included in the book!

Put this book on your shelf and you will never be stumped for ideas again. Additionally, I highly recommend this title for beginning teachers. They will find it a valuable resource to which they will turn again and again. (Indeed, I found it so complete and well-done that I bought a copy for a former intern who is now preparing to teach first grade.)

For GROUPS of children

The only reason I gave it less than five stars is because I thought it would have some activites for a single child. Almost everything in it is for a group of children. At least the dances, games etc. Some of them *can* be modified for one child though.

Other than that this book is a treasure trove of stuff. It is so jam packed with stuff to do I couldn't imagine any daycare or preschool running out of things to do. Also it list everything in the back of the book in themes. There is a small thematic chart in the front but does not include everything like the back of the book. Also half of the book is full of things to photocopy or trace for feltboard/magnet board stories.

I bought the book to use in homeschooling my toddler and while I won't get as much use out of it as a preschool this massive tomb will still keep us very busy.

This book serves largely as a vehicle to publish the creative works (poetry and songs) of one of the authors. The remainer of the content of this book is trite and generally useless. Fully half of the pages are listed as APPENDIX which consists of pictures to be copied for use in the activities suggested.

Great Information in Layman's Terms

I first checked this out from our local library...it was so GREAT, I went out and bought one for my company. The book comes with a CD that has templates that you fill in the blanks...it also tells you in Layman's terms what the documents are, when/where/how/why to use them, provides clear examples, and steps on how to fill out the templates. I would highly recommend this and "How to Form Your Own Texas Corporation" (from the same author).

* NOTE: I have the 2nd Edition, which is no longer available, but there is a 3rd Edition.

The new version of this book is now being sold under a different title: "The Corporate Records Handbook". Don't buy this old version.

the best book I've found

I've recently set up several corporate structures for small business ventures. In preparation, I took a couple of short classes at a local community college and read several books.

Most of the information in other books was very general. They would say something like, "you must do X to protect your corporate status," without telling you *how* to do it.

This is the only book I've found that clearly describes all the steps needed to properly set up and maintain your corporation. It does not cover choice of corporate structure or the actual incorporation process, but instead explains all the things you must do to maintain the legal and tax protections provided by your corporation once it is established. It also includes an extensive set of forms, all on CD-ROM. The forms are supplied in Rich Text Format, also known as rtf, and can be read by most word processors.

(Note to Macintosh users - although the book says that the CD-ROM is not "supported" on the Mac, I had no trouble opening and using the forms.)

I borrowed this from the library to check it out and now I own it. It covers everything you can think of needing. And it explains every form in detail ....the why and how.

The BEST book I've found too!

I borrowed an older version of this book from the library and had to buy it. This is THE best book on corporate minutes I hve ever read...and I have read many! It is very specific. It has all the forms in print and on disk. It not only tells you how to fill in the forms but why! If you run a small corporation and don't want to pay a lawyer to do all you minutes, this book is a must!

A Lukewarm Review

I'm not nearly as enthusiastic about this book as other reviewers here. The rhymes aren't always spot-on, and if your child doesn't attend day care or preschool, he or she may not be able to relate that well. (The setting is a day care, and the person in charge of the kids is busy trying to change everyone's diapers.) That said, the illustrations are fun, and it's not a bad book overall. I'm just lukewarm about it.

My 19 month old daughter loves this book, it is one of her favorites. We read the story to the melody of "10 silly monkeys". She picks this one out a lot for book reading time. She enjoys pointing the dog out on the different pages, and as anyone with a toddler knows - she LOVES babies!

Makes me smile.....

It is just a delightful book that anyone could share with a child. The illustrations and story are so true to life. A way to count with a child. I look forward to Ellen's next book. A collection for a grandmother's suitcase, I think.

What a fun and beautiful book!

Bought this book for my grandchildren and it was a great hit. Since then have given copies to a bunch of friends that have toddler grands that embraced it with giggles. The rhymes just flow and the counting is fun. The illustrations are irresistable. The tiny kids just like playing with the velcroe closure. I highly recommend this book.

A Warm Inviting Image of Daycare

What a sweet gem of a book with all the ingredients to make it a child's favorite. It's got a fun rhyming text that counts down from 10 to 1 that will have young children 'reading' along and on their own; the text artfully creates a portrait of daycare that shows the warmth and fun and ebb and flow of the day in such a lovely way, and the illustrations bring the story to life in a wash of colors, complete with a dog that's fun to search for from page to page. To top it all off, the book closes with a diaperesque velcro closure. I wish when my oldest child was heading off to daycare we had this book.

It's the perfect before nap book, but likely will be pulled off the shelf by toddlers at many other times.
