It is a whole scary unknown world for the new parent, and Maureen's book gives you the confidence to understand practically the newborn baby's signs and needs and neither preaches nor gives rigid rules but instead practical advice to understand.

Maureen Gannon's book offers a soft, clear and ultimately totally professional route to give such confidence on how to help and keep the baby safely through its early days to the new parent who can easily feel over-whelmed by the new life to protect.

Starting school brings about many new emotions in children. Will You Come Back for Me? by Ann Tompert addresses a child's fear and anxiety about being separated from mom. The child in this story is dispondent after mother leaves and just watches for her return. The mother calms the child and tells her she is leaving her heart with the child and will surely return to her. She crafts a heart for the child to carry with her as a reminder. The child then makes new friends at school, knowing her mother will return. An excellent, feel-good, warm and fuzzy book. I would recommend reading it to any child who is beginning preschool or daycare, or any child who is having trouble separating from mom.

I absolutely love this book. It was given to me when I was pregnant and now I give it to all my friends the moment they tell me they are expecting. I was very interested in all of the information about the growth and development of my baby, the connections to mothering from other cultures, and my favorite part was recording my own data. I saved my journal in my daughter's hope chest and hope that one day she will see what an exciting experience I had during my pregnancy for her. I strongly recommend this as a gift to give to others or yourself!

I had this book when I was pregnant with my twins. As soon as I found out I was pregnant again, I wanted the exact same book for this baby. It has day by day progress of your baby which is fun to read. It also has weekly places to write down your mood, appetite, nausea, cravings, weight and belly size. It's a fun way to journal your pregnancy.

Love this book, but be careful

I love this book. It has day by day development for Mommy and baby. It also has lots of places to right small notes about cravings, mood, weight, and your own thoughts. I received this for my first pregnancy and bought it myself for my second. Be careful when you buy that you be sure to get the "revised" version since it has more pages to write in details about planning your feelings about the pregnancy, hopes and dreams for you baby and extra pages for notes.

i bought this book from a local bookstore and it was wrapped in plastic, so i didn't get to see what i was buying until i got it home. it has good information, but i wanted something that would let me write (like a journal should) about my feelings and put in pictures of ultrasounds. i'm keeping this b/c like i said it's good info but the title is misleading - it should The Pregnancy Book, not Journal.

I work in this field (dementia - helping families find housing and services) and I think this information does not always reflect what I know is true. For example, they make the whole area on diagnosing confusing and it could be simplified. It's either progressive or non-progressive dementia, and the physical being must be examined first to rule out causes for the symptoms of dementia, before the neurological testing begins. The housing information is truly out of date - people with dementia don't go to the psych. wards except perhaps in a small town that doesn't keep up with the times. There are communities and hospitals that deal with behavior problems - but the hospitals treat them and discharge them to facilities that specialize in dementia care - not pscyh. wards.

I think this is one book that has interesting information but it would be a crime to only read this book. Attend support group meetings at facilities, day care centers, and the Alzheimer's Association and learn from others who are caregivers and from those who are up to date.

Nothing really earth-shattering or new here, at least for me (I do know parents, however, that could benefit from this crash course in creating a respectful family with kids that are enjoyable to be around). But even if you have great, well-behaved kids, it's still good to revisit the central themes of this book: Creating good attitudes, behavior and character in our children. I don't know so much about the 5 day plan, but Leman offers some good solid strategies to employ nonetheless. Straight-forward parenting advice: B does not happen until A is completed. Some good strategies and recommendations, especially on what are "mountains" vs. "molehills" (ie. what to focus on and what to let go of). I liked his writing style - no psychological mumbo-jumbo. Just good, plain advice that everyone can benefit from.

Much of the last part of the book is dedicated to specific topics and how to handle them (from "allowance" to "undereating"). This part dragged for me a bit, as I was reading straight through, but I can see where it would be helpful as a reference point. Recommended.

Leman knows his stuff!

The advice he gives in this is so simple and practical...I can't believe the difference I've seen in my kids. It only took me two days to read the book and the kids turned around in just a couple days. THANK YOU Dr. Leman!!! I love his humor and his common sense approach to parenting. Now, my kids believe what I say when I say it and they take it seriously...I no longer feel like I'm talking (or yelling!) to myself and our whole family is able to enjoy our interactions with each other much more!

All parents must read!!!! simple to apply, solid information ,and very enjoyable to read.

"Have A New Kid By Friday" is the most relevant, down to earth book I've ever read on child rearing. Kevin Leman has compiled a "how-to" list of difficult situations parents face in every day life in an easy to follow, easy to implement way that makes following the book enjoyable for the parent, life changing for the child... preserving and enhancing relationship and accountability.

Taking away cookies and car keys. What a disappointment!

Review Date: 2008-12-17
I heard about this on a James Dobson radio talk show, and immediately purchased it. I read every word through to Friday. What a disappointment!

It just seems to be a boundless list of things to take away from your child. Maybe it works well for little kids. But my daughter was 14 at the time (15 now), and I needed to learn to communicate with her! Not to take away chocolate chip cookies and car keys (she doesn't even drive yet!)

After you get through to the Friday chapter, the majority of the book is on Problems and solutions. It has a list of potential problems. I would identify a problem and read it through with deep interest noticing this problem described my daughter to a T, but then the solution was always the same, Take away the car keys, or ground her, or something like that.

My daughter is responsible. She makes straight A's. She goes to church. She participates with the family. Her problem was her hot temper. Taking things personally. Getting easily offended over little things.

I needed to learn to communicate with her! I needed to learn how to talk to her and LISTEN to what she is saying to me so that I don't brush off her "little problems" as insignificant and let her know if they are real to her, they are real to me, so that she didn't blow up in the first place! I didn't find that out from this book. Instead I found that out from another book:

"Mom, I Hate My Life!": Becoming Your Daughter's Ally Through the Emotional Ups and Downs of Adolescence (A Hand-in-Hand Book)

I felt the "New Kid" author was very arrogant in assuming the problem is always with the child. There seemed to be nothing to help the parent realize they were part of the problem. If you want to spend your life grounding your child and taking things away from them, get "Have a New Kid by Friday." He doesn't seem to have a clue about the mother-daughter relationship.

Otherwise, if you want to learn where YOU can improve as a parent, where you can learn to listen to your child, learn the different mothering styles and identify yours and how to improve based on that knowledge; if you want to learn HOW to communicate in the first place so that the bad behavior doesn't occur, then get "Mom, I hate my life." Granted this book is for teen daughters (if you're daughter has started at 8 or 10, read it now).

Maybe "New kid by Friday" will work for you and your toddler. I never had toddler problems.

The only reason I didn't give this book the lowest score was because after reading it, I realized my daughter is wonderful compared to the other kids in this book. She makes straight A's, she gets up in the morning on time and goes to school on time, she does her homework without being prompted, she helps around the house, she's funny, sweet, very responsible, goes to church with us without complaining -- all things listed as problems with other kids. It helped me realize that grounding her is not the solution as she doesn't deserve grounding. She doesn't deserve to have her cell phone taken away.

She instead deserves a mother who will listen and learn to communicate with her and see that to her, her problems are real, not insignificant, and thus allow us to talk and care about each other so that the Katie-boom moments don't occur. Again, to learn all that, you'll need another book, "Mom, I hate my life."

Blessings.

A father and son relationship can only benefit from this book
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-12-04
Don't miss the point of this book, Knighthood as defined by the author involves becoming a real man through faith and walking with Christ. This text is talking about biblical manhood. The author helps to point out that a boy can for example become an excellent student through study and determination under a parents tutelage but still end up uneducated in the truly important things in life. A father can even train a son to be an Olympic medalist but he can still turn out to be a miserable human being.

As a father doing such things as getting down on the floor and playing with your son and being involved in a sons activities, schooling and sports are very important - but don't be confused all of those things aren't enough. This book points out the need for benchmarking and rites of passage for young boys within a community of Godly men.

If you come from a family that the father is or was absent, due to divorce, or death - and haven't ever been "knighted" by another father figure - a substitute like a stepfather, grandfather, an older brother, family friend, a coach, or a special teacher then this book will be of some use to you raising your boy on his life's journey. I am a Christian and have a son. I studied this text with a small group of men at a men's group at my church. One of the reasons this book and its ideas are so warmly received is because so many fathers have never been "knighted" themselves. I will agree that yes some of these things from the book can be learned in a classroom, in the sports arena, locker room, scouts, or in the military - but definitely not ALL of these things and probably not with a focus on putting God first. The books strongest concept is that a real man rejects passivity; a real man accepts responsibility; a real man leads courageously and finally, a real man expects the greater reward.

This is a GREAT group study book for men because it provides the catalyst for discussions on topics men rarely talk about. It is also very good as an audio book for the car. The only downside I have found is that the audio book can only be purchased on cassette.
Rating: Strong Buy

Every Man Needs to Read This

I cannot thank Robert Lewis enough for this book. I pastor a church and will be ordering the "Raising a Modern Day Night" DVD series, as well as enough books for the men in my church. I am going to teach a class where our men read a chapter or two at a time and then get together and discuss what we are learning. I have already mentioned this to a couple of men in the Church and both of them said that they themselves wanted to be a modern day night. Robert Lewis also has a .com website called Mensfraternity where I am going to be ordering his Manhood series for myself and my church.

The book is divided into five sections. They are "The Need For Modern Day Knights", where Lewis lays out the desperate need in the modern world for fathers to take their role as dad seriously; "The Knight and his Ideals", where a vision of manhood, code of conduct and the need for a transcendent cause being instilled in our sons is laid out; "The Knight and His Ceremonies", which for me was the most interesting part of the book; "The Knight and His Round Table", which speaks of the community of men that your son needs around him to reinforce the stuff discussed in section 2; "The Knight and His Legacy", which has a very important chapter for dad's who think that they have blown it and it is too late for them.
I cannot recommend this book strongly enough to every man. Some men will say "I don't have any sons", but every man has been a son and this book will heal and help you in your manhood or in your relationship with your father. May God richly bless you as you take the journey through this great book. Buy it, I promise you will not regret it.

As I began reading this book, my initial reaction was negative. The author obviously was portraying knighthood in a romantic fashion, one drawn more from Hollywood movies than research in the area. It wasn't long, however, that I gave him a mulligan on that one and listened to the more important points he was making. I finally decided that if he wanted to use a romanticized notion of knighthood, I could deal with that because he was also saying a lot of things that needed saying. Lewis' premise is that boys have know idea what a man is. That resonated. I also liked his principles of manhood: A real man rejects passivity, accepts responsibility, leads courageously and expects the greater reward. Even more appealing to me was his assertion that ceremonies that mark key life passages in ways that make them memorable for a lifetime are important. While I am proud of the men my sons have grown to be, even without the book, I can see how memorable ceremonies in their lives would have been advantageous. All in all, this is a book with enough insights in it that it would be worth the time of any father, but especially of boys in the 10-12 year-old age range.

Lewis addresses a major need in our society: raising our boys into men. This is a timely message because we live in a society that has completely forgotten that there is such a thing. Or else its definition of a man is far short of what the Bible calls 'a man'. Lewis offers many helpful tips on how to celebrate rites of passage from boyhood to manhood - tips that I may just use with my own sons.
That said, I felt that his overall view of what a man is still fell short of the biblical standard. What was lacking in this book was 'how' this is done. To come up with good insight and goals to strive for in wanting to become a man is one thing - to show young men 'how' that is to be done is quite another. Our power to become men and to live like men and to treat women as they should be treated and to stand for truth the way we're called to is rooted firmly in Jesus Christ, not in our best intentions to be men. I'm not sure that Lewis wouldn't agree with this; however, I did not read much of it in his book.
We cannot just give ourselves a good vision of manhood and then strive, in our own best intentions, to live it out. We WILL fail at this if it is not rooted in our life source Himself, Jesus Christ. I appreciate what Lewis has done - he has narrowed the gap between what little writing is out there on biblical manhood and what should be. But I would have liked to have seen our Savior magnified more as the Cornerstone for how such men are made and sustained.
