Only 3 pages on how to write your application!
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2005-02-10
This book promises to help you with a tough task such as getting a cruise ship job. That's why I wonder HOW you can write an attention-grabbing application when the author provides you only with 3 pages tips on cover letter and resume writing. If he has been lucky enough to get a job I doubt that anything from the brief advice in the book and the 5 years old addresses and telephone numbers will help YOU to achieve the same result. If you really want to get a cruise ship employment the only book which I feel confident to recommend in written form is the category's bestseller- Cruise Ship Job in 14 Days.

5 years old, useless information

A true expert will keep his book up-to-date giving his readers the most accurate and current information. For the past 5 YEARS this book is NOT touched from its author. This is the reason why most of the addresses, telephone and fax numbers are outdates and useless. Tell me how your application will reach a cruise line, so they can consider you, if the address from the book is wrong? The only current and full with instructions from the Professional Association of Resume Writers book is Cruise Ship Job in 14 Days. Check it out.

Nice try!

This is a nice try for a good quality book. It is neither updated for the past 5 years, nor it offers something more than good tips on cover letter and resume writing. I doubt that anyone can defeat the severe competition for any cruise ship job having only this as foundation and advice.

I have also bought Cruise Ship Job in 14 Days and if I have to compare them it's just like Ph.D thesis and pupil's notebook with tips and tidbits of basic information. I followed The L.A.S.E.R Strategy for Next Generation Applying and got a job in 10 days as an Engineer onboard of Royal Caribbean Cruises. That's why if you really want a cruise ship employment at least you will need the current addresses of the cruise lines in order your application to reach them. Does the author care that the ones in his book are 5 years old? NO! Will you rely on him for the best possible advice and strategies on getting a cruise ship job?

"all new, second edition"- Lie! The prove
Helpful Votes: 46 out of 46 total.
Review Date: 2005-03-01
When I looked at the book I neither found such information on the front or back cover, nor in its content. It is clearly written "first edition March 1, 2000" and this is the truth! The author can and do say anything in the description BUT the ugly reality is that he is shameless enough to lie you only and only to sell you his 5 years old, low quality book.

As a Sales Manager with 11 years experience I am telling you that his tips are practically useless for marketing and selling yourself to the cruise lines. That's why this author and his book are for 0.5-star rating because trust and honesty are the foundation of everything. Instead of shamelessly lying you, it is better to finally move his ass a little bit and at least update his book although it badly needs a transplantation of valuable content! If you are looking for the latest cutting edge stategies for applying and writing an impact cover letter and resume, the only book in the world I recommend is Cruise Ship Job in 14 Days!

5 Years Old Useless Book!

The author states in the book description "all new second edition" but this is lie. It is still first edition written more than 5 years ago. This automatically makes all addresses, telephone numbers and time sensitive information good for nothing. Furthermore, there are only few pages with tips on how to apply. If he has succeeded to get a cruise ship job his book has NO potential to help anyone to do the same. Instead of it I highly recommend the only "exceptional, 5-star" book in the world at this category "Cruise Ship Job in 14 Days". Thanks to it I got a job at Royal Caribbean Cruises in 17 days and from July 1 I will see those paradise-like islands sailing on a 5-star luxury cruise ship.

I didn't find this book very useful maybe because it is too old and it has not been updated for quite a long time. However, there are other books on the market which can be very useful and helpful.

I didn't find this book very helpful maybe because it was written too long ago and since then it has not been updated. However there are better books out there which may be rather useful.

Too many cities, too little information...
Helpful Votes: 14 out of 14 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-26
The descriptions of the ports were extremely limited due to the number of ports covered in this book. Since most people who cruise Europe tend to cruise one region, it would make more sense to have more detailed books devoted to specific regions. I bought this same type of book for an Alaskan cruise last year, and it was great, but there are fewer ports in Alaska. It does have some good information, but overall, I was disappointed.

I purchased this book for my boyfriend who is a cruise director. I flipped through it after he received it and I came down with a headache from the illiterate prose that soaks each page. Punctuation, spelling... it belongs on Deck Zero.

Standard material if you're familiar with cruise ship life
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2002-05-23
This book is entertaining if you have never been exposed to the folklore and mores of cruise ships. Odds are, that if you have ever been on a cruise, you have heard these anecdotes and jokes, most likely from your Cruise Director. It's full of old standard tales (the woman who got stuck on the vacuum toilet; the passenger who asks if the crew sleep on board the ship; etc.) but unfortunately didn't supply a single anecdote that I was not familiar with. If you ever worked on a ship (I haven't), forget it. You have heard the tiny cabin/ shower jokes ad nauseum I'm sure. Fun material overall, but nothing new, and I found the author's tendency to present the information as if it were totally novel most annoying.

Where is the prove for dedication to quality?
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-01-22
The author puts a lot of stress on his dedication to quality and great but not related experince. However the book since its publication in 1995 or 10 YEARS AGO has NOT been updated! Taht's why if you read it I am sure that you will end up with the same conclusion that he likes and knows to "talk" about quality but when it comes to delivering it, there is nobody already 10 Years! It's better to consider one of the other books.

The book is good at scaring people!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2005-01-22
Yes, it is difficult to work on a cruise ship and no, noone has died so far despite all the scary things which the author talks about. If you are motivated all you need is a great application package and the current contact information of the cruise lines. Unfortunately this book is written in 1995 and since then is NOT updated, so forgt about up-to-date adfrsses and telephone numbers. It gives some information on how to write your application but it is so general that with the severe competiton for every open position nowadays, relying on it will surely doom your chances.

Total JUNK - don't buy this book
Helpful Votes: 28 out of 28 total.
Review Date: 1999-04-01
One of the worst books ever writen. Not one single 'secret' of the cruising world is revealed in this book. Huge revelations include: "one should select their cruise agent much like they would their lawyer", page 64; and "by prepaying early, many cruise lines will discount their fare". Duh. Talk about exposing secrets! Be still my beating heart. This is one of those fluff books where there really is about 20 pages of information but hey use huge type and big margins. More than half of this book is simply a listing of addresses of cruise lines. I wonder if these addresses are meant to be the secrets? What a ripoff. Do yourself a favor - keep looking for a real book on cruising, but don't buy this one.

This book is too general. Current and up to date information is available on the internet. Each cruise ship only mention briefly of what the children program is about. Half the book is devoted to the Europe tour. I doubt too many US family travel with young children on a cruise ship. Not worth to buy this book.

Such books make me wonder how is it possible someone to sell a product and DOESN'T care at all how incredibly outdated and useless is its content/quality. Well, then its up to us to think carefully for what we will give our hard earn money. I want a reliable and up-to-date book and that's why will NOT recommend this one because since 1996 it is good for nothing.

You will find everything on the internet, with one click of Google, there are "no secrets" nothing, great book if you want to be entertained and be an armchair cruise ship employee without leaving home, but that's about it, our daughter already had far mor PERTINATE material on hand than this book even had in all it's pages. Too much "filler", meaning a lot of empty writing and words, to make the book look big and interesting.
