I am a BSN nursing student who has a multitude of books containing information needed to complete clinical paperwork, dragging all of these books back and forth to clinicals was back breaking, this book is a must for any student, it's pocket size and wealth of information is worth every penny paid. I wish the authors would come up with a book like this for every area. I highly recommend this book, and will look forward to others of it's kind

I have found every BRS review to be the best around, and usually it's all you need for the USMLE. Dr. Latha Stead's book is no exception. She has written an excelent review on a broad and heterogeneous subject, with great questions at the end of every chapter. Thank God for BRS! I just wish there were more titles for the step 2...

Highly Recommended Emergency Medicine Review Book

This title, part of the very popular Board Review Series, is a concise review of emergency medicine focussed toward medical students doing an emergency medicine clerkship and 1st year residents from all services rotating through the ED It is a concise review of EM that one can read easily in a 1 month block. The book features 20 chapters divided by organ system representing the most common complaints seen in the ED. Every topic is divided into:

1. Clinical presentation which covers symptoms & physical exam findings

2. Diagnostic tests which includes labs and imaging studies. The most relevant or crucial labs are highlighted in bold. Others are listed with findings that further support the diagnosis but are not required. For imaging tests such as radiographs and CTs, the specific findings one may note are described.

3. The Treatment section covers theABCs, pharmacological therapies, patient comfort maneuvers, and which consults to call.

4. The Disposition section covers which patient to observe and D/H, which ones toadmit to floor, which ones warrant ICU, and discharge instructions. Many topics have subsections on definitions, risk factors, and prognosis.

Every chapter has 10-20 USMLE-style multiple choice and matching questions at the end, with detailed explanations of the correct answers. The end of the text has a comprehensive examination consisting of 200+ USMLE style questions, none of which are repeated from the end of chapter questions. In total, the book contains 400+ questions. The book is a recipe-style book intended to be carried around in the ED, packed with tables and figures one so often wishes they had at their fingertips. (For example, the ACLS algorithms, the Rosenbaum Eye chart, a chart contrasting cardiac murmurs, toxicology anitdote chart, bhCG correlation with gestational age, table of male GU emergencies, etc...)

In contrast to other EM review books, this one has both adult and pediatric dosages for all drugs listed, makes extensive use of charts, tables, illustrations and figures (key for studying!) and includes unique sections on bites & stings, biological warfare, and occupational (needlestick) injury.

This text provides an excellent overview of the diagnosis and treatment of surgical emergencies commonly encountered in the field of vascular surgery. It is well organized by specific body areas and there is a section on general concepts that will be especially useful to those in residency and fellowship training or beginning a vascular surgical career. The excellent illustrations help to augment the text.

As an anesthesia resident, I was looking for an introductory text to provide a solid foundation for my first year of training. This book fits the bill. I get bogged down pretty easily by certain texts, but this book is easy to read and understand. Would also recommend to short timers in aneshesia (medical students rotating for weeks or months) as it focuses on key topics without too much minutia.

"Guided Imagery with Children"
Successful Techniques to Improve School Performance and Self-Esteem
By Sarah Berkovits
Publ. Whole Person Associates 147 pp

Sarah Berkovits' all-embracing knowledge of children and the many problems that accompany them make this book an impressive source of ideas to help both parents and teachers. The book is well laid out enabling the professional reader to easily access easily suggestions appropriate to the problem at hand.

The vivid examples of childrens' writing and their art show clearly that guided imagery has a positive, beneficial effect on the child. It is most pleasing to have seen at first hand the significant change that takes place so eloquently conveyed in the book and witnessed too in my own professional work using Ms Berkovits' suggestions. I have seen at first hand the successful outcomes deriving from the application of these suggestions.

For those facing these problems in the classroom and to parents coping with them at home, I warmly welcome and recommend this book as inspiring, helpful and original.

This book is terrific for learning how to deal with high risk situations involving obstetrics. AWHONN is a state of the art nursing association and this book is a tremendous help to those who want to further their knowledge on high risk maternity care. I would recommend anyone who is a Labor & Delivery nurse or in the obstetric field to read it.

This book is a very good addition to your library, regardless of whether you're an infrequent performer of invasive procedures or if you're practicing in a busy PICU. I particularly like the illustrations for teaching procedures. Students and residents can read the descriptions and see the pictures both before and after either observing or performing a procedure and really consolidate their knowledge of the technical specifics. This book should be part of the library of any ICU that cares for pediatric patients.

A must have book...

Pocket and Reference Book

Review Date: 2001-11-17
For us we have used it as a pocket and reference book in our facility.

Most imaging books on trauma are either written by the physicians for the physicians or the radiologists for the radiologists.

Fortunately, this book provides the best of both worlds. Easy to read and explanation provided that gives meaning to why we do this and that in our facilities.

Perhaps an update would include more radiographs or line drawings which would make reading easier.

All you ever need while on duty

This small book makes it easy to carry around while at work for quick references.

There are useful tables and best of all recommendations on the types of view (plain radiographs) that would be appropriate for each situation. In addition, highlighting the advantages of using a particular view.

There are overviews, on how to improve and reduce risk of missing abnormalities on films taken at the emergency department.

Overall, the book is divided into chapters that are sensible that makes referencing easy. I would recommend this book for physicians (especially trauma), nurses, technologists and interns/housemans.
