I really liked this book. It had entertaining illustrations that we can all relate to, even those who have only been caring for their loved ones for a short time! The tips were very helpful to me when caring for my Grandmother. I read the entire book, then used the tips as a searchable guide for information in the areas I needed help in at the time. I would recommend the book to anyone who is caring for a loved one or who will be caring for a loved one in the near future. The chapters are named with songs and the illustrations help to make light of real issues, which keeps the book positive. I believe the author and illustrator both went out of the way to show creativity and fun which makes it easier to read and helps to encourage you in your caregiving endeavor. I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone who is or will be caring for their loved ones. Five stars to the author and illustrator. I got so much good from reading this book that I read her other books, "Caregiving Tips A-Z, Alzheimer's and Other Dementias", The Caring Caregivers Guide to Dealing with Guilt", and "Hospice Care at Home".

Awesome information!

This is not just a how-to guide for caregiving in our homes, this book is Starr Calo-oy's personal testimony. And because she's "been there," I can trust her insight and recommendations. She offers practical advice and care instructions with uncommon sensitivity, meeting not only the physical needs of the person in our care, but their social and spiritual needs as well. This is not a cryptic medical encyclopedia, but an easy-to-read (large print), practical guide anyone can understand and benefit from. I just wish I'd had access to such invaluable and refreshing information when I cared for MY parents.

I bought the first edition of this book after transfering from a multisystem ICU to a neuro-surgical ICU. I have found it to be a very Nurse friendly book. I have several resources for neuro, some are very complex.Joanne Hickey has put together information on a very cerebral topic that is for Nurses from novice to expert.

Love neuroscience-get this book!

The Clinical Practice of Neurological and Neurosurgical Nursing is an excellent overview of the care and management of the neuroscience patient. It's perspective is largely that of neurosurgery/ trauma nursing and is focused predominately on the acute phases of care. This text is arranged topically by disease/ injury process with the introductory chapters oriented towards concerns in neuroscience nursing. The depth and breadth of the material is suitable to meet my needs in the neuro-intensive care unit of the Level I trauma center in which I work. It provides a ready and easy to use reference with solid explantions of disease process, complications, treatment, pharmacology, and nursing considerations. I recommend this text to new nurses in neuroscience at my hospital regularly and I am currently using it to prepare for certification in neuroscience nursing.

A wonderful text for anyone involved in trauma care - despite level of training. The pictures are extremely clear, and the descriptions of procedures are superb. One of the best pictorial medical books on my shelf (and there are many). Thanks to the authors for an excellent work.
Sincerely,

Trauma Library

A vivid full color atlas that presents nearly 700 images, including; clinical, operative and autopsy photographs, radiographs, magnetic resonance imaging, angiography and original drawings. Chapters are organized by major body regions including the head, face, neck, chest, abdomen, musculoskeletal system, spine and soft tissue system. The accompanying text discusses management guidelines, work up protocols and common pitfalls. The objective of the book is to give the reader a detailed clinical and visual depiction of trauma injuries that commonly present within one of the largest trauma center in the United States.

The clear and concise text, accompanied as it is with side by side pictorial comparisons of surgical disease images and treatment protocols, is extremely effective. The Emergency Medical Physicians/authors must have worked closely with the Trauma Surgeons in order to capture images during critical stages of care. ED snapshots of external signs of injuries accompanied by X-rays, and when available intra-operative pictures, give readers a comprehensive understanding of the treatment strategies employed. Most helpful to this reviewer were the photos of external signs of head injuries, followed by CAT scans and concluding with images from the operating room detailing intracranial blood collections and subsequent evacuations. Many of the images in the book depict injuries that are unique or rare, although not exclusive to large urban centers. For example, photos of close range shotgun wounds, impaled foreign bodies, dislocations and severe facial trauma. Many emergency trauma surgical procedures that may be less commonly observed in smaller trauma centers are presented in an easy to appreciate format including; catheter balloon tamponade techniques to stem hemorrhage and lateral canthotomy to reduce retrobulbar pressure of the optic nerve. The autopsy images were exceptional as well. Most notable were those images depicting severe distraction of the spinal column and extrusion of the spinal cord.

I welcome the opportunity to utilize this impressive compilation of images and techniques in my teaching and clinical work, and I highly recommend it's use to ICU, OR and ER nurses. Utilizing detailed and strikingly graphic photography and text, the book provides a thorough and comprehensive understanding of the initial presentation of a variety of injuries and treatment protocols. A fascinating and practical hands on textbook for the ER and trauma library.

Community Heallth Centers

This highly-readable book provides an accessible and personal view of the nation's Community Health Centers. It is a must-read for anyone interested in care for the poor and underserved. From their conception in the 1960s to their present status as medical homes to over 14 million poor and near-poor Americans, Ms. Lefkowitz tells their stories through a series of case studies of rural and urban centers and the people who have led them.

The author draws on her background in both journalism and health policy to portray communities and leaders as they reflect the political and social changes around them. Hers is a personal style that draws in the reader. While it is clear that she greatly admires the visionaries who made the centers possible, her subjects are real people, not plaster saints.

Great help! This book helped me fingure out what exactly I needed to put in my own concept maps. It also has some great sections that you can photocopy and take to clinicals, so that you don't miss a single thing while gathering assessment data.
Great BOOK!

I have been an nurse in a critical care area for over 5 years, this book tells you what you need to know in a concise way, and leaves all the non-essential information out. If you want to know th quick answer without reading a bunch of fluff, this is the book for you.

The best Crit Care Handbook
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2003-06-05
This is easily the best crit care handbook around. Well written chapters - the one on mechanical ventilation is the best I've read in a handbook - and hits most topics you need to know.
Downsides - it can use some updating, and I think most chapters can be a little more detailed. (better to have more detail than less)

Another good option would be Joseph Varon's Handbook of Practical Critical Care Medicine.

If you're going to buy a crit care handbook it should be one of these.

Overall I am impressed with the content in the field guide. It has alot of info that others don't have. My only complaint about it is the layout. Sometimes it can be difficult to find things, unless you know right where they are. Tabs on the pages would help this. Otherwise it is a great reference.

When you want the best go to the people who "wrote the book". UMBC continues the quality of care form the ED to the field. This is one of the best pocket guides I have ever come across, chunk full of usefull info for ANY medical provider.
