This book blends basic science, anatomy and physiology into this concise volume. Written primarily for surgery residents at
any level of training, this handbook emphasizes applied pathophysical, indication for medical versus surgical intervention
and the detailed surgical techniques used at the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Harbor-UCLA. It provides easy-access
reference in its contents: description of fundamental concepts with immediate clinical applicability; well-illustrated, step-by-step
summaries of surgical techniques;discussion of management controversies; presentation of techniques such as venovenous bypass,
hemografting, autografting and thorascopy.

Timothy B. Hackett and Elisa M. Mazzaferro's VETERINARY EMERGENCY & CRITICAL CARE PROCEDURES will also appeal to this specialized
audience of veterinary medicine students, holding details for general practitioners and specialists as it breaks down key
emergency and critical care procedures. Hundreds of black and white photos throughout illustrate the written word, which comes
from two leading emergency and critical care specialists who have much clinical experience behind their words. A 'must have'
reference for any serious veterinary medicine collection.

Subjects covered are interesting and usefull.
However, images being in black and white, plus the fact that photos taken sometimes are too close ups, are difficult to give a clear picture of the procedures, even for an experienced veterinarian.
The book is dealing with emergency cases so any misunderstandings can lead to unpleasant outcomes.

The print edition is probably more usefull than the Kindle edition. This book's usefullness relies on it's photos that illustrate
the techniques. I got this hoping to use it as a teaching tool for my staff, but the pictures just don't come out well on
the Kindle (don't get me wrong - I LOVE MY KINDLE) but this book is best used in print.

I am studing with ICU nurses for the CCRN exam and we have a variety of books to study from. This book is very straight forward
and to the point. It is in outline form with just enough info to either confirm your knowledge basis or to let you know
that you need to "dig" for more. Each and every section is correlated with the outline from AACN for studing for CCRN exam.
The rest is up to me - see you at the testing center.

It all depends on what kind of review book you are looking for to study for the CCRN. This book is generalized and broad.
I prefer study guides that do not make you go to other references to relearn what you need to know. I like it all in one place.

This book is a great reference for the novice and experienced neonatal intensive care nurse. It is easy to read and understand.
It has helped me to understand the physiology of the diseases and the treatments available. I keep it close by in the unit
for a quick reference. I also have taken time out when I am not busy to just browse through and find things I have never
heard of so I have a "heads up" before a baby hits the unit. I highly recommend it. It is certainly worth it.

This book is a disappointment. While it covers a huge range of issues specific to the neonatal population, this book is in
an outline format and fails to give the reader a descriptive, in-depth analysis necessary for most to develop a solid understanding
of any complicated disease or congenital abnormality.

the item was in good condition, though, and it came quickly. just hoped the seller gave a more accurate description.

After attending one of Ms. Mimms courses, I bought this book. It is explicitly detailed and offers the critical care nurse
a sound base of knowledge. I have implemented several of the chapters into our competency program and refer to it regularly.
Thanks to Barbara, we have a reference guide soley for the purpose of teaching new critical care nurses.

This book is very fundamental. This is for beginning nursing students. As you progress through the program, you are expected
to be more scientific with your rationales. This book do not have scientific rationales. I would not consider this to be a
good source.

I tend to read a lot of neuropsychiatry books for work and this is the latest from Jeff Cummings - an author who seems to
do little wrong! The production value on this book is very high - quite a few color illustrations are used. The text is, in
general, sensible and useful but there are some minor inaccuracies and some topics not covered. In places the depth is not
really adequate and it may not offer quite the same coverage as competing volumes. Overall, excellent in places, but some
omissions - therefore I would give it ok(3stars). I am sure the next edition, will offer more.

The contents are solid, but $32.00 is an outrageous sum for what amounts to an oversized brochure (big print, lots of white
space and only 92 pages long). You will get much better value for your money by buying any of several EMT-B pocket references
available. More content, lower price, and a much more convenient form factor. The AAOS should be ashamed of itself for gouging
the profession like this.

This book enabled me to study material for the CCRN exam in a test format. Next to the question was the rationale for all
the answers listed as to why it was correct or incorrect. While studying the material, I was also getting exposed to the
way questions would be formulated on the exam. I passed my exam using this book as my main study guide. I highly recomend
it.

This book contains CCRN type questions with explanations of their answers seperated by body systems. Then toward the end
of the book there are a few practice exams. There is no review of the body systems outside of the question format, so basically
its just a book with a 1,000 CCRN questions. Unless you have passed CCRN in the past and just looking for extra test questions
to get you in the mindset of taking the CCRN, the book is pretty worthless.

Compiled of easily readable chapters, which are narrow in focus. This allows one to read on a topic without becoming overwhelmed
with a large scope of material. Well organized and thought out. More in depth and focesed on particular problems of critically
ill surgical patients that other popular texts.

The editors of this textbook, presumably on the management of surgical ICU patients, have missed the mark. Many chapters
in this text are written with no thought whatsoever to the differences that are faced in the management of critically ill
peri-operative patients. For instance, the chapter on Myocardial Infarction addresses coronary plaque rupture as the sole
relevant etiology of MI in the critical care setting. At least in the surgical ICU, and I suspect in the MICU as well, low
flow states play a major factor in the development of ischemia and the propagation of thrombosis leading to MI. No mention
is made of this phenomenon at all. This is followed by a treatise on the management of these patients with thrombolytics
and antiplatelet therapy with no regard for the fact that a number of these patients are post surgical or trauma patients
and may need to have an alternative treatment plan at least considered. This is only one example in a text that repeatedly
fails to consider the patient population it is proposing to help clinicians manage. I wouldnt recommend this text to anyone
proposing to use it to learn the fundamentals of surgical critical care. i cannot speak to its validity in general critical
care, but that is not the Title of the Text.
