Although the research base of this book is second to none, it is at times extremely inaccessible. I would not recommend this book to someone unless they have an extensive cardiac knowledge. The cardiac anatomy and physiology section delves into areas that are completely irrelevant for nursing studies. I advise looking else where for your cardiac nursing primer!.

I'm disapointed with this book, it's not quite what I expected.Allmost all cardiac emergencies are depicted with the old guidelines, that have been changed by the ILCOR in 2005.Treatment options are OK but there are many topics missing, could REALLY be better

My internship we had open ICU's...so virtually every night I was stuck caring for critical patients in one of the ICUs. As a transitional resident, I had no interest in reading the Marino ICU book (which was in need of some updating). This book has everything you need to survive and help you manage even very sick patients while on call at night. I carried this book and the Ferri book in my labcoat as references in addition to some others on my PDA. This book is very concise, and will update you in just a few minutes on most issues you may face in the ICU/critical care medicine setting. Highly recommend for transitional residents, especially for those who would have no need to purchase larger more comprehensive references such as those going into medicine or anesthesiology. For those going into Ophthalmology, Radiology, etc.. this book is perfect.

ICU rotation can always be intimidating for residents, especially the first one. Most of us start searching for a source to read as anxiety builds up. Everybody suggests Marino's "The ICU Book", which is OK, but needs time and it is not well balanced. This small book is a great source. You can quickly read it and refresh your knowledge before starting your rotation. During the rotation, you will be able to quickly review the topic and make sure you are not missing anything. I would highly recommend it.

Of course this isn't a textbook which will tell you everything but a very helpful guide to be carrying along as a med student or junior resident rotating in the icu or internal medicine rotation. good bang for your buck

I found this book to be the most beneficial with respect to understanding respiratory care. I am currently a Pediatric resident and this book helped me on several occasions when I was on call and I am grateful to the authors. The book contains all relevant material and omits unnecessary detail that other books have had in abundance. This book could be frustrating for someone who has no understanding of ventilator support, however, would be more than adequate for any health care professionals including nurses, respiratory therapists or medical students looking to tie up the loose ends. After I purchased the book, several other residents I work with opted to purchase it as well. Good luck!

Review Date: 2008-10-30
To be honest, I wasn't that impressed. This was our assigned textbook, and I tend to use the texts as references for when I don't understand something in class or in a problem set. I felt that this book often left out the explanation of "why" something happened, and tended to be less in depth than even our lectures and so I'd be frustrated that the book didn't really explain the underlying mechanisms to a process (which I think is key to understanding renal pathophys)...and don't get me wrong, I'm not one of those people trying to memorize every tiny detail. But I felt this was a little too superficial to be of much use. I ended up probably getting more out of Robbins and Costanzo's BRS Physio review (which does include some pathophys) than out of this text.

Though the text can be a bit dense and overly wordy sometimes (Glomerulonephritides chapter), it does an excellent job at explaining pathophysiology. Pictures are in B&W though, so if you're just looking for nice slides, pick up Robbins. If you're looking to gain understanding, pick up this book.

A very entertaining, yet informative look at the essential concepts of trauma care! Well written, easy to follow, and really gives a good overview of the conceptual approach to major trauma. If you need more info, you can always consult a trauma textbook, or an anatomy atlas, but this covers the essential concepts in dealing with a critically injured patient.

Review Date: 2006-08-20
I thoroughly enjoyed this book not for the "how to do it"aspects of the book but for the "why to do it this way at this point in time" aspect. As the authors point out, much of trauma surgery is time critical, and options are often limited. Surgical decision making at this juncture is the factor that often leads to success or failure - Hirshberg and Mattox succinctly list options and the reasons for following one line of attack instead of another given different circumstances. The book is almost flippant in its language on many occasions, and for those of us who have done time at Ben Taub know that this is not in character for either author, for whom the art and craft of surgery is deadly serious. The apparent flippant tone introduced into the book allows the authors to provide emphasis in a way that a chart or graph wouldn't - fluently and with humour. The book is presented in the way that a mentor may review a case in the surgeons lounge - simply, clearly, and with relevance. This is an extremely useful book for those involved with trauma surgery, and I hope to see new editions of this book at regular intervals.

This is a kindler gentler book on nursing. Provides good sense, good treatment methodology for the WHOLE patient. In a word CONSIDERATION, good old fashioned care and concern for all aspects of patient care are the primary focus, but don't be fooled as the didactic content and treatment modalities are definetly current.

A Great Theoretical Aspect on Critical Care

Review Date: 2006-03-19
Since this is the only critical care text book I've used, I have no real basis of comparison. I'll try to be as objective as possible.

I'm using this book for my critical care class in nursing school. I've covered several sections of this book and can say that this book explains the material rather well for the student nurse.. and possibly the new nurse on the critical care unit.

The book is well-structured and organized starting with critical care nursing in general and discussion on practicing hollistically and goals of the critical care nurse with plenty of evidence-based research to help support the future evidence-based practicing nurse. The authors then progress by system discussing assessments and common pathologies found in the critical care environment and expected symptoms, diagnostics, treatments, and how the nurse should care for the client with that particular disease. Aside from the text, countless tables, charts, and graphics are available to highlight key points and provide more indepth coverage on certain areas. NCLEX-style questions and case studies are also available to help facilitate learning.

So as a nursing student, I find the text very insightful and informational when working with critical care level clients. The pathophysiologies are indepth and helped me develop a clinical picture for my clients and the diagnostic and treatment modalities were thorough. A solid text.

Critical Care NURSING: A Holistic Approach - for NURSES only.

Review Date: 2005-10-16
I am required to use this book as part of a Critical Care Emergency Medical Transport Paramedic class (CCEMTP). This book contains a great deal of very easy to interpret information, but it is not sufficient for EMS personnel. While I've enjoyed reading this book in general and I would continue to read this book to better my personal knowledge level, I would not use it for future educational purposes unless I was a nurse seeking to increase my training level. I do wish that the authors would get together and come up with a Critical Care Paramedic book to use for EMS training; their writing style is easy and comprehensive and there is no randomness to their book - they get to the point and give you the information you need.

The disc that comes with the book did nothing but repeat the information in the book; there were a couple of tests, but I didn't find any of the disc contents to be particularly helpful. And their pharmacology information is limited; it would have been nice to be able to read more about critical care pharmacology in one book as opposed to having to purchase a completely different book.

I do like the fact that at the beginning of every chapter they give you a long list of websites that you can visit pertaining to the topic you're about to read. It gives you another source- an educational second opinion- to refer to.

If you consider buying you might want to add the little "handbook" that goes along with it. This combination works pretty well for review.
Overall, most chapters are well written and complete. However, the index is often less than ideal and can make finding a not so outlandish topic like SBE-prophylaxis rather difficult.
Should you get this one instead of the big "Miller"? Well, the coverage in Miller is still broader and more complete but at the price of a abundant prose, abundant weight and two volumes. Again, in my view the handbook makes this book more useful.

In Anesthesiology they say you are either a "Barash Person" or a "Miller Person." It is my personal opinion that Barash does probably the best job at providing content that is relevant and devoid of minutia. All sections contain material that is optimal for reading and assimilation. The text is large, yet it is far from dry. I highly recommend this as "The" backbone text for Anesthesiology!

Don't get sick. That's all I can think after reading this book.

My wife used to work as a hospice nurse. She's out of it now, totally burned out. Most of her patients were just fine to work with, she says, it's the family that drove her nuts.

Families don't come off well here: they either keep people alive waaaaaay to long, or want them immediately dead in order to get their inheritence.

Mind you, doctors don't come off so well either. The main protagonist is a doctor for want of something to do with his life. His immediate supervisor - another doctor - is clueless but has great style. The main admitting doctor is a chronic alcoholic.

The patients? Well, they're suffering from fat, cigarettes, booze, or old age.

Only one nurse comes off at all well.

This is one damned cynical book. Like I said: don't get sick.

This book is sharp and funny

Writing Excellent
Plot Excellent
Pace Moderate

I love this author's work -cynical, black humor, my personal favorite. He writes exceptionally well. His writing could make an insurance brochure interesting. The plot itself often takes a back seat to his cynical description of the medical field. As a professional in the health care field, a lot of this stuff is sad but true. The plot moves along well even though it's frustrating watching the protagonist sink into a quagmire brought on by his bad decisions. This book is an excellent read. That being said, dark humor is definitely an acquired taste.

I plucked this book off a library shelf in 1996 only because the author's last name caught my attention as being similar to my own. I took it and 6 other novels home and sat down to take a quick preliminary glance at all of them, happening to start with CC. Three hours later, I was still in the same place, alternately howling with laughter and shouting out "Richard Dooling is a GENIUS!" This novel has everything--everything I like, at least: black humor, mordant sociology, unusual but believable and mostly even likeable characters, a plot that keeps you turning pages as fast as you can while at the same time wishing the book would not end, mystery, surprises, an inside look at an arcane profession, and finally, wisdom that doesn't seem hokey. I went back to the library in search of information about the author and--this was 1996, remember--found only a couple of reviews, in library journals, and the reviewers had not understood the book AT ALL. Its fortunes improved somewhat after his second novel was published. The movie was also superlative but went largely unnoticed. I recommended both novel and movie to many friends, and several told me one or the other was just too "strong" for their taste. Maybe it just hits too close to home. I have found most of the same qualities in Dooling's subsequent novels, which because of their subjects--Africa, cyberspace--may be far enough removed from what really hurts us here in the U.S. to be more popular.

Absolutely hilarious if u r in the medical field!

Before taking on Richard Dooling's "White Man's Grave" (a National Book Award finalist), I decided to try out a shorter work of his, namely this 1992 debut work. Frankly, there's not much of a story here. I think even each of the five-star reviewers on these pages would attest to that.

What there is, however, is wonderful insight on the medical profession, especially regarding the dynamics and motivations of ICU care. For anyone in medicine, or even for someone who has a good friend or relative in the profession, "Critical Care" is a must-read. For those who live the life depicted in Dooling's book, there will surely be laughs, head-shaking assents and the occassional exclamatory "Yes!"

Where this book also excels is in its depictions of where the medical and legal professions intersect. In fact, the hospital's in-house counsel has some wonderful things to say to the book's protagonist, Peter Werner Ernst, about 'the truth':

"You must understand that in any litigation conducted by competent attorneys the truth will come out; it's only a matter of when. you must also understand that it is far better for both you and the Medical Center if the truth comes out sooner rather than later."

"Cross-examination can be a very unpleasant experience, even for a witness who is telling the truth. Successfully telling lies is almost impossible. Lies change. The truth does not change. If the honest witness gets confused during questioning, he or she need only remember the truth and cling to it and give the same, consistent answers to every question, even questions for which the witness is unprepared. If the witness is not telling the truth, his or her story will change. A good lawyer will easiliy detect that change and will let the witness go on changing the story. Then the lawyer will confront the witness with each change and ask him to explain it. In his panic, the witness can't cling to the truth because he is lying under oath, which is a crime. More changes inevitably appear. Then, as you can imagine, things get worse...It can be a humiliating experience."

Not only is that superlative writing, it's also about the most spot-on writing on that subject I've ever encountered. I was recently a witness to a cross-examiniation in which that exact sequence of events unfolded. A witness got tripped up in a key lie - he told it once in the morning depostion, then messed it up when trying to re-tell that afternoon. When the lawyer pounced on those differences, it wasn't a pretty sight. The truth would have been a far more effective strategy. Kudos to Mr. Dooling for brilliantly encapsulating that important 'life lesson.'
