A Must Read For Everyone!

Review Date: 2005-09-11
Mr. Kleespies magnificent text is a must read for everyone!! One never knows when they will be faced with end-of-life care decisions and we must take the time now to be well informed and prepared. I believe that the lay person as well as the professional will gain a great deal of knowledge from this book.
A wonderful companion book to this is a marvelous new publication by Renata Vestevich entitled "Grant Me My Final Wish: A personal journal to simplify life's inevitable journey."
We all need to make our wishes known while we are still able to communicate and this journal will take you step-by-step through this process. It is something that you can begin writing in now, filling it with your requests for just how you want that inevitable day to be carried out. You can also fill it full of precious memories and photographs which will become a treasured keepsake for family members.
Now is the time..in the present..for us to become well informed about such issues as outlined in Mr. Kleespies text. After reading it you may want to go one step further by beginning to personalize your own wishes in Ms. Vestevich's beautiful journal.
Thank you both for helping us prepare for such challenging issues right now while there still is time to do so...

Great little book of "Fatherly advice" about Emergency Medicine
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-05-24
Drs. Wrenn and Slovis have put together a gem of a piece of literature. It is, basically, a book of pearls on how to be go the extra mile and be a truly excellent, caring Emergency Physician. For years, I have been dispensing "fatherly advice" to my residents on how to be a "top notch ER Surgeon," but they go so much farther and have so much more material in their book. Kudos to Drs. Wrenn and Slovis on penning a must read work.

Comprehensive and Complete
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2004-08-24
This book was well-planned from the outset. Three of the most highly respected authors from the US, Great Britain, and Germany bring treatment philosophies together in a manner that pays great attention to pictoral demonstration. A comprehensive book dealing with current approaches to cranio-maxillofacial trauma has been long overdue. Of particular mention here is the respect to which these authors have given to reconstruction of the soft-tissue component of injury, including facial nerve injury. The book is well-written in general. The treatment concepts reflect current practice standard, including the use of modern imaging and case preparation techniques. The color illustrations are well chosen throughout. It is highly recommended

Outstanding tribute to the original Ellenhorn
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2004-02-28
The original Medical Toxicology by Matthew Ellenhorn was a fabulous resource for the clinical/medical toxicologist. That it is still widely used despite being published in 1988 is a testament to it's impact and utility. This third edition of Medical Toxicology goes back to those first edition roots: a plethora of useful topics written in a clear, consice manner.

The book provides excellent detail needed for the understanding of a wide range of toxicologic problems. Treatment recommendations are as evidence-based as possible given the field of study.

The third section of the book focuses on one of the key elements of being a toxicologist: detective! The section is titled, "Diagnosis of the Poisoned Patient: The Toxicolgist as Sleuth". Rarely do patients present with a (accurate) diagnosis. It's the job of the clinician to take all the available information, work through the possibilities, and identify the most likely agents that could be causing the observed effects.

This is an outstanding resource and should be considered for critical care and emergency clinicians as well as poison center staff (especially those still in training in these areas). Given the popularity of TV and movie scripts that include toxicologic information (e.g., CSI, ER, etc.) those writers would do well to review this text.

The Appropriation of Meaning
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2006-03-20
This book represents a significant leap in our understanding of mental disorder. If we existed in a world where society was guided by the latest efforts of sharp thinkers (rather than cost/benefit analysis) then we should be seeing major changes in the existing insitutions that provide care for people with 'mental health problems'. The book begins with the following thesis: Intentional (meaningful) mental states are causal as they can be used in the explanation / prediction of action. They attend to this thesis in the first part of the book. These mental states are not reducible to physical states, rather they are 'encoded' in physical states in the brain, something akin to how information for producing a particular phenotype is encoded in the DNA molecule. Their account solves the following problem: Ever since Karl Jaspers set the limits of understanding, 'true madness' has been excluded from the domain of meaning and relegated to that of biological dysfunction. Thoughout this book Bolton and Hill show how in biology as well as in psychology there are many possiblities for disorder in the absence of any physical dysruption. Disorder can be envisaged as occuring from the intentional stance only if intentional mental states can be construed as having causal power. Their account drives meaning back into previously 'meaningless' phenomena.
