Critical-Care Books

I was lucky to get this book at a used-and-reduced price; however, that doesn't change the fact that the book is outstanding in it's content. I own Hazinski's pediatric ICU "bible", but this book is SO much more detailed. If you want to learn peds cardiology...REALLY learn not only the congenital malformations but the surgery for each malformation with detailed diagrams in a step-by-step process, then this is the book for you. Each section starts with detailed embryology and expands your knowledge base from there. Most of the PICU nurses I work with have grabbed this book out of my nursing bag to use as a reference many times in the month I've owned it. They are all planning to buy it in the near future. This is a great book even if you don't plan to take the AACN certification exam for RNC. I highly recommend it!

As a physician, I've used this textbook and I believe this is a "must have" book for all physicians dedicated to Critical Care Medicine. Extensive and detailed review of all items. I advice you to buy the "Current Therapy in Critical Care Medicine" book (written by Dr.Joseph Parrillo) as a complement from this excellent textbook. I hope a new edition will be planned (and I hope somebody tells me about it!!!)

Only saw it in the International Congress, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and have a good expentancy about its containts. I heard Dr. Ronco in his talk.

The editors are professors of nursing from different universities. The foreword was written by the series editor and the preface that includes a discussion of the evolution of gerontological nursing and it as a specialty was written by Dr. Fulmer. There are 37 contributing authors. The book has four parts and 23 chapters including: Chapter 1, Standards of Practice: Gerontological and Critical Care Nursing; Part I: Basic Issues with Elderly Populations-2. Common Geriatric Problems, 3. Becoming Frail: Failure to Thrive, 4. Delirium, 5. Comorbidity: Assessment and Impact, 6. Pain, 7. Nutrition, and 8. Injury Prevention in the Elderly. Part II: Nursing Assessment and Management-9. The Clinical Approach, 10. Pharmacological Therapy, 11. Patient Education, 12. Evaluating Outcomes, 13. Discharge Planning: Design and Implementation, and 14. Family Resources to Critical Care. Part III: Specialized Practice in Critical Care Settings-15. Trauma Care, 16. Medical Intensive Care, and 17. The Coronary Care Unit. Part IV: Social and Policy Issues-18. Ethical Decision Making, 19. End-of- Life Care, 20. Spiritual and Religious Care, 21. Ethnogeriatric Issues in Critical Care, 22. Legal Issues, and 23. Policy Issues. The chapters end with summaries and references most of which are from the 1990s, but some date back to the 1960s. There are tables throughout the book that list such information as the Braden Scale, the confussion assessment method, cumulative illness rating scale, weighted index of comorbidity, complications, risk factors, screening questions, resources, examples, drug classes, selected instruments, predisposing factors, common medications and side effects. The book ends with an index. The stress of hospitalization can contribute to medication side effects, infection, incontinence, delirium and falls. This book can help critical care nurses provide excellent geriatric critical care by restoring physiological stability and by preventing functional decline.

Layout: major organ system; each system 's commonly-encountered failures described in detail; assessments and interventions for each including pharmacotheraputics; diagnostic procedures for each disease entity and description of procedures. Layout is consistent, therefore, predictably easy-to-follow; quick-referencing enhanced.

Book contains about 185 case presentations,presented as clinical vignettes followed by a page long discusion and ending with 3-4 pearls for that paticular case.

This book is very high-yield for medical students and junior residents who rotate through the ICU. It is practical and compact to carry in your white coat and reviews and explains fundamental ICU physiology and management.

It is a great reference to use before and during an ICU rotation. This book is highly recommended.

This book is a perfect refresher course. It helps pull the various concepts of critical care together. The concise question-answer format keeps you from having to search through pages and pages to get the answer you want.

This easy-to-understand book helps simplify the complexity of CTDs whether you're an HS&E professional, plant employee or person off the street. It's full of good visuals, practical applications and won't give you a hernia carrying it around! Great training aid to help people understand what's meant by a "neutral" posture or other technical terminology when you're preparing your next session. Valuable tool to have on your reference shelf. Used it during my undergraduate work and have been using it ever since as a reference tool. Too bad there aren't more like it.

This an extraordinary compilation of critical care medicine. It covers, in-depth, many issues and complexities of the branch of medicine. A must fo the dedicated practitioner.
