Successful Management of Open-Heart Surgery Patients!
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 1999-12-11
This book is based on the experience of the Paul Munk Cardiac Centre in Toronto Canada from where all the contributors come. It is divided into six sections progressing from pre-operative considerations to postoperative ward management. A third of the 40 chapters are surgically orientated but these are useful for anaesthetic trainees to read. Knowledge and understanding of each other's perspectives are essential for first class patient care and this book can provide both.

Throughout the book useful research and audit data from the Toronto computerized database is given, sometimes compared with published figures where they are available. The book has several chapters on complications and the Toronto way of avoiding and managing them, with some notable successes.

As a book this is based on one large and successful centre's way of doing things, it works. There is a selectied reading list for each chapter with mostly up-to-date articles. This handbook achieves its purpose of being a source of practical information for trainee doctors, nurses, perfusionists and other healthcare personnel involved with patients undergoing open-heart surgery. Anaesthetists on their cardiac module would find it helpful and the appendices at the back of the manual give the Toronto algorithms and protocols, from wich some departments may get useful ideas.

Numerous Practical Strategies for Getting Students to Ask Questions
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-11-25
Learning begins with perplexity. In fact, some forms of teaching (the Socratic Method) rely entirely on the teacher asking questions. Students also understand things more if they ask questions rather than just go through the memorization-and-recall routine.

But how is the teacher to pull this off? Many ideas and methods are presented in this book. To begin with, the student can complete a "How Curious are You?" self-survey.

The teacher can provoke thinking with statements such as: "I am thinking about something that is green." A set of question drivers are provided for book reports. One of the questions is: "What made the plot believable?" Detailed questions related to compare-and-contrast activities are also provided.

Instructions are given for constructing a Wonder Wheel. The "I wonder..." can be combined with: who, where, why, why, what, etc. Colored hats can be used to represent different student approaches to questioning, such as the student wearing a red hat examining the emotions and feelings in a story, a student wearing a black hat focusing on the negative aspects of a story, etc.

Question-building matrices are included. For instance, the: who, what, when... can be successively combined with: is, did, can, would, will, might.

Different sets of helpful websites are featured. For example, there are websites that make it easy for the teacher to ask questions through tailor-made crossword puzzles.

excellent resource for families regarding end of life issues

Review Date: 1999-06-19
Dr. Postley's book is easy and gentle reading about a subject that, I feel, our society does not speak about freely. By using his own experience, he shows that we all have the capacity to get through these difficult times in our own way. I think he gives excellent advice about how each patient, family and friends should deal with the medical profession; he gives good suggestions for questions that should be asked. As a medical student, it was enlightening to read about what it is like "on the other side." I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to know that others are going through similar experiences and how they dealt with their grief and difficult situations surrounding this.

an outstanding book on dealing with illness

This is a truly profound book about a doctor's perspectives on illness and death, largely revolving around his own mother's illness, but drawing lessons from it that are important for all of us. I would recommend this to anyone who has been touched by serious medical illness, and to anyone who needs their faith in the medical profession renewed
