Unique debut novel

This is an unusual novel, quite unlike anything I have read before, and even more difficult to classify. It's not so much science fiction as thriller, and even then the driving force of a mother's love makes it something else again. It is this absence of an obvious genre that makes it a compelling read.

I won't revisit the plot, as this has been done quite well here, but suffice to say that it is really thought provoking. Is this current time or the very near future? It is certainly a world we recognise, and yet when we move forward in the story we encounter technology that we have never seen or even imagined.

For those readers who are looking for something a little different and challenging to your way of thinking, this is an enjoyable read. For a debut it is sensational.

This book goes to the areas which most other home repair manuals tend to avoid like sump pumps problems and radon remediations. Illustrations are only black-white and not step-by-step. But is a good value.

Encyclopedia brown cracks the case was great. This story was about a boy whose parents were detectives. Evrey chapter is a difrent case that Encycoledia solves. I loved this book. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves mysteries. Especially becuase it had a case that is solved by Encyclopedia in each chapter.

The two surviving Bloom triplets (Rose died at birth), have lived a very good life until Lily tries to kill herself over a boyfriend; deadhead Iris knows she cannot cope because she is so shook up. She flees her relatively happy middle class Colorado home. On the road she meets Oregonian environmental activist Blair Jaeger fleeing a situation that went wrong. They journey together stopping in San Vacio, Mexico for some needed respite.

The hotel is a dump so Iris asks elderly ailing American expatriate Henry Whitman if they can rent his other house that he owns since he only uses one. Henry was going to refuse until she notices and comments about his Scrabble board. As they play Scrabble every night, a warm relationship forms until he begins to show signs similar to Lily's. Iris wants to flee out of fear for what Henry might do. She has no one to turn to as Blair is off to his next environmental event and the married doctor that she is half in love with ignores her. She soon realizes she needs to be with kindhearted dying Henry who has given her back her life one tile at a time.

FALLING THROUGH THE CRACKS is a deep character study that focuses predominately on Henry and Iris as each find a way to live through their warm relationship. The story line enables the audience to comprehend why Iris fled Colorado and is considering running away before Henry dies, but she has matured so plans to be there for the person who was there for her. Barbara Haynie provides a deep look at people nurturing one another during a time of crisis.

An interesting tale, from the time we learn how to think, to the present.

A candid view of substance abuse and then full recovery. Remember the movie, Basketball Diaries? well this book was similar to that movie. It sheds a very clear light to the trials and tribulations that this individual experienced and how he dealt with it and eventually overcame it. I enjoyed reading it.

If you have cracks growing in a house founded on clay soil, then you need this book. Read this book before you pay any money to anyone to do anything to your house. It's only 100 pages long, but it tells you everything you need to know to take action (or inaction) on your house as appropriate. Money and time you spend on this book will be the best investment you can make on your house.

A collection of some of the best intelligent insults of all time
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-08-26
The intelligent insult is the greatest literary form, done well it is superb, done poorly there is nothing more lame. This book contains some of the best of all time. Witticisms by luminaries such as Dorothy Parker, Oscar Wilde, Henry Arthur Jones, Will Rogers, Hedda Hopper and Mark Twain grace these pages. After reading this book, my only comment can be "Well done!"

I read at least one chapter/essay a day, usually in the morning with my morning coffee. The one I read becomes my "chuckle" for that day. A great way to start off any day on a lighter side! The book/author is a riot!
