Must read if you're thinking of cosmetic work on your teeth

I'm an attorney so I'm skeptical by nature, but I really think this book is invaluable if you're thinking about improving your teeth with a cosmetic procedure. It provides an explanation of the various options (in simple to understand terms) and more importantly gives you the critical questions to ask your dentist before you commit to thousands of dollars. Also, a picture is worth a thousand words, and the detailed "before and after" pictures in the book can give you a good idea of what to expect and the type of results that can be achieved. I highly recommend it.

Excellent resource for dental students

Learning the correct definitions and pronunciations of dental terminology is key for anyone studying to work in the dentistry field and Charline Dofka's book, Dental Terminology, is an essential resource for those students.

The book is clear, comprehensive and well organized. Each chapter contains optional exercises that a person could use to test how well he or she is retaining the information found in the chapter. There is also an appendix that breaks down dental terminology to prefixes, suffixes and root words, making it easier for someone to intuitively understand a dental term. Another great feature is the "sounds like" pronunciation tool and the CD that allows students to hear the words and phrases in question being articulated.

Near the end of the book, there are chapters that will help with the business and financial side of the dentistry field, including ones on office communications, appointment control, patient records and filing procedures, business correspondence, dental insurance terms, financial disbursement and banking, inventory control and legal and ethical terms.

If someone you know is entering the field of dentistry, this volume would make a terrific gift. Dental Terminology would also make a thoughtful present for a dental hygienist re-entering the field who is in need of a quick refresher/reference guide.

This book is an excellent guide for the dental field. It is very well organized and concise, yet very informative. It is very easy to reference topics and the language is very clear. The spectrum of topics is vast, but not overwhelming. It covers subjects that are currently used in the dental office. It gives the reader clear information on topics such as material and techniques, management, procedures, and basic functions needed for the student and practicing dental professional. The diskette containing the review questions and exercises is very comprehensive and challenging. This is truly a great book for anyone in the denatl field!

The text is very useful for the individual who does not have any dental experience, as well as a nice reference for someone trying to explain terminology to a novice. There is a lot of valuable information in the book and on the CD. Everything is presented with clarity. It is a great resource for your own personal dental library.

Step-by-step guidance for choosing a doctor
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2005-05-07
Now in an updated second edition, America's Cosmetic Doctors & Dentists is a straightforward reference and resource intended especially for any individual considering cosmetic surgery. America's Cosmetic Doctors & Dentists is packed with step-by-step guidance for choosing a doctor, descriptions of all major cosmetic procedures ranging from botox to breast enhancement to liposuction and dental implants, facts about costs, results, side-effects, and necessary preparation, and much more. A selection of before and after color photographs demonstrating successful results from various cosmetic treatments is especially enlightening. Yet the heart of America's Cosmetic Doctors & Dentists is a database of over 6,000 qualified physicians and dentists currently engaged in cosmetic practice. The book itself only lists their names; to gain access to Castle Connolly proprietary database of biographies of the doctors and dentists, one must use the accompanying CD-ROM and have internet access. Purchasing America's Cosmetic Doctors & Dentists grants owner the license to use the CD-ROM and access the database for up to one year. An extremely useful resource to consult for information before putting one's body or one's wallet on the surgical table.

It is very important for anyone considering improving their smile to be well informed of all their options and the risks, benefits and alternatives to each procedure. The more informed someone is the better, because then they can communicate to their doctor exactly what they want. And this book does just that. I use this book to help educate many of patients considering smile improvements.

An Exceptional Guide for Patients Needing Cosmetic Dentistry
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2004-04-11
As someone considering spending substantial time and money on major cosmetic dental work, I had the opportunity to borrow this new work from my dentist. Dr. Landau does a terrific job illustrating the different procedures in a simple to follow "before and after" type format, while explaining the basics of each procedure in layman's terms.

While I certaintly don't know the first thing about dentistry, I know what I want the results to look like, and the many explanatory pictures used throughout the work made it much easier to understand the proposed procedure and discuss the potential outcome.

For anyone in need of cosmetic help, this guide will readily facilitate a more informed and comfortable decision.

Stedman's is the best!

Absolutely agree with the earlier review posted below. This volume was published in 1999, and an updated volume should be coming along soon, but meanwhile, this exhaustive collection of words relating especially to ears, nose, throat, and teeth is without peer. If you're an MT looking into expanding your library because you've found yours wanting, Stedman's is the place to look, and this book is a crucial part of such a library.

Best reference for plastic surgery/ENT/dentistry words
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2000-07-08
"Plastic Surgery/ENT/Dentistry Words" is a gem of a reference for the transcriptionist doing work in any of these specialty areas. It is chock full with 69,000 entries derived from >40,000 medical words, phrases, abbreviations, and acronyms. These are conveniently cross-referenced. Who of us has not heard, for example, some kind of "flap" mumbled by the dictator while transcribing a surgical report; here, a list of >4½ pages of various types of flaps are blessedly enumerated. Additionally, surgical instruments and medications are handily listed as well.

Four appendixes complete this volume: 1) anatomical illustrations [54 pages of them!], 2) sample reports [op notes] ranging in variety from typical liposuction surgery to an orbiculopexy, 3) common terms of procedure [such as septoplasty terms, etc.], and 4) common herbs in both Latin and common terminology. This latter is interesting, but I am confounded as to what is its use in this volume.

Nevertheless, this handy volume is really the Bible when it comes to a reference for anyone transcribing medical reports in the above-mentioned specialty areas. I recommend it highly!

Wonderful guide for earlier jaw distraction
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-04-02
I've had this book for a couple of years now but I'm just getting around to reviewing it. While I'm not a doctor and much of the book can be over your head in some ways as a layperson, I still found the book to be extremely valuable and is my bible in jaw distraction. My daughter has a facial syndrome and has had three jaw distractions already, with more to go and I recognize many of the great doctors and their devices in the book. I even passed the book around to several of her doctors who found aspects of it fascinating even though they may have known already about jaw distraction. The downside of the book is that while it is packed with information, it's much like a computer; it's mostly passe by the time it gets published because jaw distraction has gone on to bigger and better things. I would love to see the follow-up book to this one even if it will be passe once published!
