This book is very easy to read and contains a lot of information about heart disease and how to prevent it. There are a great deal of pictures and figures. I found this book to be one of the best on the subject. As a dietitian, I found it helped me understand some of the reasons heart disease is so common in the world.

I'm a hypnotherapist and was just reading this great book when a client told me about rushing her 46 year old husband to the emergency room -- with a heart attack! If she'd read Dr. Turneer's book beforehand, she might have saved her husband the crazed ER visit, and had a better outcome.

Dr. Turner's brain and life saving advice can help everyone!

Having survived a heart attack in 1998 I must admit that had I read Recognizing and Surviving Heart Attacks and Strokes by Glen O. Turner, Tim Bade and Mark Bruce Rosin before the event I might have avoided the event altogether. As pointed out, there are significant warning signs well in advance of the attack or stroke that the informed individual can heed and avoid possible death or disability.

Recognizing and Surviving Heart Attacks is written for the layman. Organized with short chapters, the book is easily scanned for specific information. Chapters such as What is a Heart Attack; How a Heart Attack is Treated; Coronary Artery Surgery; Heart Attack Early Warning Signs, You Key to Survival; How to Recognize and Respond to the Early Warning Signs of a Stroke or "Brain Attack"; Brain Hemorrhage Strokes; and the list goes on. Many chapters are only three pages long making the information easy to get at and not overwhelming. "Doctor speak" is kept to a minimum and definitions and illustrations are provided.

If coronary artery disease runs in your family you must check this book out. Ask you library to buy it.

Peace and good luck.

Answering Your Questions About Heart Disease and Sex

In writing, Answering Your Questions About Heart Disease And Sex, Eduardo Chapunoff, M.D., uses an intriguing, comfortable and witty format to address intimate health issues that are of particular concern to cardiac patients and their sexual partners. However, it would be a mistake for readers to pass up this book if they don't fit into this category because it contains a vast amount of information regarding the heart, and other physical and emotional concerns that any individual would find invaluable.

The author uses dialogue to effectively convey some of the questions that patients ask after suffering heart attacks or being diagnosed with serious heart problems. Many of them want to know the risk factors involved in making love. Do they dare engage in passionate lovemaking and, if so, WHEN? Dr. Chapunoff is honest and forthright with his answers and provides general guidelines, while strongly emphasizing that only a patient's personal physician can provide the appropriate options and timing for sexual activity.

This book is informative, well-researched and appropriate for professionals; however, it is not too technical for the average reader who may be desperately seeking answers. Other than a book entitled Sex and the Cardiac Patient published by the same author in 1991, there are no other books addressing the issues he covers. Dr. Chapunoff, with the writing of these two books, has opened a door to a long-neglected subject. He relates that many patients hesitate in discussing sex with their personal physicians because they feel that they don't know the physicians well enough or, perhaps, know them too well. Many times both the patient and physician are uncomfortable with the subject matter. The author strongly recommends that future physicians receive more exposure and training in sexology, psychology, and communications skills in medical school and during postgraduate training.

As I read this book, I recalled the time when my ninety-one year old father confided in me that he had tried to talk with his family doctor about sex after suffering a severe heart attack. He said that the doctor was uncomfortable and at a loss for words. I could understand because I felt my face turning red-after all this was my dad and I just couldn't imagine him being sexual. Especially at his age! Though I wanted to run, I listened and later thought about the doctor who had brushed my father aside when he was seeking help. How I wish I'd had a copy of this book to give Dad and his physician.

Dr. Chapunoff addresses a variety of subjects that will be of great interest and value to the cardiac patient. The first chapter is entitled Anatomy of a Heart Attack and the last chapter is fittingly named Planning for a Better Future. In between there are chapters that discuss instructions to patients, the benefits of a heart attack, masturbation, communication, extramarital affairs, sex following a cardiac crisis, sexual dysfunction, erectile dysfunction, Viagra, etc. It is this reviewer's belief that, if you are a cardiac patient and have questions in regard to sexual and health issues, you will probably find these questions addressed in this book. This excellent resource proves that an informative and educational reading experience can also be engaging even when the subject matter is very serious.

Dr. Chapunoff is a master of knowing how to pull in his readers by presenting information that is current and relevant

Author Eduardo Chapunoff, M.D. integrates both his professional experience as a cardiologist with good solid information in his Answering Your Questions About Heart Disease & Sex.

As Dr. Chapunoff mentions in the introduction to the book, one of the most common problems in discussing sex with your health provider is embarrassment. And another problem is that only up to recently has there been a concerted effort to address in detail the subject matter. Even Dr. Chapunoff admits that before he wrote his book, he knew very little about advising patients as to the precautions they should take before, during, and after sexual intercourse. As a result, when he first set out to research the topic, he was astounded when he discovered that there was very little information pertaining to sex and the cardiac patient in classical medical and cardiology textbooks or in medical journals. Only during the last ten years has the subject been taken seriously with clinical research and clinical observations of heart disease patients and their sexual performance.

In an upbeat, direct, straight forward conversational style, Answering Your Questions About Heart Disease & Sex provides basic facts about a multitude of concerns that directly or indirectly relate to cardiac patients and their sexual partners. Examples of some of the questions explored are when should a person be able to resume sexual activity after a massive heart attack? Are there any special sexual positions one should adopt after a heart attack? What is the danger to engage in passionate lovemaking if you have hypertension, heart failure, valvular heart disease, aortic aneurysm and/or cardiac rhythm disturbances?

Dr. Chapunoff is a master of knowing how to pull in his readers by presenting information that is current and relevant to not only cardiac patients but also to others who may be thinking about the topic but were too shy or embarrassed to discuss it with their physicians.

Divided into four parts, the book begins with the basic facts to sex and the heart. It is here where we learn about the reality of experiencing a heart attack and its ramifications insofar as concerns its benefits and yes, believe it or not, there are some interesting benefits. From here Dr. Chapunoff explains cardiovascular disease, sex, aging, sexual dysfunction, female perspective, risks of sex, communicating with your doctor and sexual partner, and what to do after a heart attack. Dr. Chapunoff also explains and explores erectile dysfunction, exercise, and nutrition. Quite interesting, Dr. Chapunoff states that the majority of doctors and patients avoid discussing the right time to resume sexual activity following a heart attack, an acute cardiac crisis or cardiac surgery. Unfortunately, this has led to many a patient deciding on their own when to once again become sexually active with some disastrous results. Unfortunately, as mentioned, the timing for resumption of sexual activity is not determined by a book or general principles as every case is unique and should be treated individually by your health-care practitioner.

Dr. Chapunoff also explores myths and facts surrounding sex and the heart with some humor thrown in as an example, a physician to his patient: "You are telling me that you had sex without waiting for my recommendations, and as soon following your coronary? Walter, didn't you think it was risky?" And the patient's reply: "No, I thought it was worthy!"

As Dr. Chapunoff mentions in his introduction, it is difficult to tell which of the topics dealt with in the book are more important. Questions that you never focused on and perhaps considered trivial, may be extremely important for your cardiac health and sexuality. Consequently, the book will prove to be invaluable to widen your horizons concerning the subject matter, however, as mentioned, this educational guide should not be a substitute for any of your physician's recommendations. Medical treatments are not provided by books but rather by doctors.

The Great American Heart Hoax: A Wonderful Book

Review Date: 2008-11-16
It's a rare book that can be both horrifying and empowering at the same time. "The Great American Heart Hoax," by renowned cardiologist Dr. Michael Ozner, is one of those books.

"Heart Hoax" is horrifying because it reveals many troubling facts about America's cardiac surgery industry. As a longtime medical advocate and critic of our healthcare system, I've known that too many heart surgeries are being performed in America; I just didn't know how many too many! In his book, Dr. Ozner reveals that, of the more than 1.5 million angioplasties and coronary bypass surgeries performed annually in the U.S., fully 70-90% are not only unnecessary, but are also detrimental -- and in some cases, even cause death. I knew that many diagnostic tests expose patients to radiation, but I didn't know that the 64-slice CT scan -- so often used to detect clogged arteries -- gives a patient the equivalent of the radiation from FIVE HUNDRED X-RAYS. And while I had known that the simple cholesterol test, which doctors routinely use as a predictor of cardiac risk, does NOT give the full picture, I did not know that it correctly predicts risk IN ONLY 40% of cases -- AND that there is another blood test (which doctors normally do NOT use), which can correctly predict cardiac risk in 90% of patients. All of these facts -- and more -- add up to what Dr. Ozner refers to as the "Great American Heart Hoax." The truth, writes Dr. Ozner, is that invasive cardiologists HAVE KNOWN many of these "dirty secrets" for years, but have chosen to ignore them, in the unholy goal of "following the money."

So, why do I say that this book is also empowering? Because, the exposé takes up only one part of the book. In the second half, Dr. Ozner gives us the "good news," by laying out his solution: a 10-step prevention program he has used successfully with his patients for nearly 30 years. It combines the Mediterranean Diet -- with lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish and healthy fats -- with nutritional supplements, exercise, stress reduction, and lots more. After reading this book, you will know how to prevent a heart attack and, if you have already had one, how to greatly reduce your chances of ever having another.

This is a very important book. I cannot recommend it more highly. I have been recommending it to every one of my friends and relatives who are at risk, as well as those who are already (perhaps wrongly) taking statin drugs preventatively. "The Great American Heart Hoax" shows us all a better way.

I always like a recipe that is enjoyable to browse through, and this one is just that. Most of the recipes are side-by-side with photographs which look delectable. I definitely recommend this cookbook!

As a psychologist working with a young client who has heart disease, I found this to be an excellent reference. The sections on personality variables and clinical interventions have helped me to deepen my understanding of some of the variables underlying his psychological reaction to heart disease, as well as to plan effective interventions. The lay reader may find some of the information too dry and may well want to skip many of the chapters -- this is definitely a book written for professionals. But it is one which I think many lay people interested in the issues involved in cardiac psychology will find useful.

An important book on an important but neglected topic

Although this book is a collection of scholarly articles, it is an easy read. Its subject is the often neglected problem of the psychology of the cardiac event. I know, having had a heart attack, an ambulance ride to the emergency room, days in CCU, and corrective procedures, that the event and the aftermath are quite stressful. The patient often needs attention even beyond a cardiac rehab program. I also know that the psychologists and the cardiologists are not connecting as they should, partly from time constraints, but mostly from a kind of technical gulf between them. Whether you are a heart patient or a medical professional, you will profit from reading this book.

I'm enjoying the messages in this book...the stretching and flexing exercises are wonderful! I combine them with my daily 3-mile NordicTrack workout and feel that I'm actually being a friend to my heart now! (I lost a brother a year ago to a heart attack "out of no where", so I'm glad to work on the heart of my matter!)

The reason behind each exercise is explained and then the proper way to do each one is illustrated! Certainly, the "user friendly" aspect of the book caught my interest right away! While I'm very active and healthy, the exercises in this book seem to enhance my feelings of fitness! My heartfelt appreciation, Dr. Wexler!

Who needs another exercise book? Well, it turned out I did. Dr. Wexler explains how exercise affects specific body functions and from this flows his emphasis on correct breathing when exercising. His recommendations differ from those given by various fitness instructors; since Dr. Wexler is a distinguished cardiologist I am now following his recommendations. This slim volume is user friendly in that the 29 exercises are clearly illustrated and the text is well organized and tightly written.

GREAT BOOK AND A GREAT READ!!

This is the best book I've read that covers heart disease detection, prevention, and reversal PERIOD. A mandatory read if you have heart disease in your family!! I've read many of these types of books because I have heart disease in my family and have been dealing with genetic high cholesterol my whole life. Everything you need to know about heart disease in one book...it's like a complete handbook on heart disease.

The first part deals with what it is actually like to have a heart attack and what to do to stay alive...this is worth the price of the book alone. The author believes that absolutely NO ONE should ever have a heart attack much less die from one with a little proactive work from you and your doctor.

The book outlines all the various ways to properly test the likelihood of heart disease (just one example: Don't just take a cholesterol and stress test; but actually testing the size of your body's cholesterol may be more valuable to know since you can have a heart attack with as little as 30% blockage and traditional stress test only detects blockage of 70% or greater) This book is absolutely full of this type of useful information which can keep you around for a very long time.

Also, I really liked the way this book has all the up-to-date medial detection and medical treatment technology and goes way beyond the basic stuff you see in all the other medical publications (Details the different types of cholesterol tests, stress tests, heart scan technology, etc.). Also runs through the good points and bad points from a cardiologist standpoint of the more popular diets that people use (instead of just singling out fat as the culprit like every other medical publication.)

This book is technical but simple for the lay person to understand because of the easy explanations Dr. Devane uses. The book gives you today's most up to date tools to PROPERLY detect and reverse heart disease. Just knowing all the facts that are out there makes it easier to motivate yourself to take control and responsibility over making proper decisions if you or someone you love has to deal with heart disease.

Excellent background of epidemiologic information complete with crisp charts and graphs, great up to date explanations of pathophysiology, well formed treatment recommendations and guidelines presented. There is a wealth of up to date information consistant with the current primary literature on laboratory and diagnositic tests, medications, diet, and patient assessment.
