I bought this book to help reduce my recently diagnosed high cholesterol problem. I'm an RN and found this book very inspiring and informative. I highly recommend it and am using most of his suggestions. The best book I have found on the subject & I have lowered my LDL and raised my HDL. Now I am trying his weight loss ideas that cover one chapter and suggest restricting carbs. I started that today. This book is worth the money and the author also writes a newsletter that you can subscribe to.

It really, really works!

Amazing results and pretty easy! Believe me, you can lower that colesterol and still eat well! Following a few suggestions in this book--I wasn't even that strict---oat bran, niacin, more vegatables, avoiding transfats ect, my total colesterol dropped 116 points in SIX WEEKS! My "bad" colesterol went from 177 to 80. The book is easy to read and you will learn tons about how your body works.

I got my total cholesterol down from 275 to 191, Triglycerides down from 221 to 96. LDL down from, 182 to 118 and HDL up from 49 to 54.
This was accomplished in 10 weeks by rigidly sticking to the zero saturated fat recommendation and half heartedly trying the Niacin regimen.
I cut out cheese, milk, whole eggs, etc. and substituted with olive and canola oils.
I have since ramped up the niacin regimen to the complete doses recommended by the book and will see if I can improve on these already impressive numbers.
Try it, it works.
UPDATE - 10 weeks after the review above I had my lipids checked again and my total cholesterol is now 133; that's pretty amazing considering my
total was 275 just five months ago and I have not taken any prescription medications. My LDL is now 75 (down from 182) and my triglyserides are now 71 (down from 221). I am actually concerned my cholesterol may now be too low. Great advice!

This book is an excellent read with practical, easy to follow diet changes. My cholesterol went from 257 to 187 in 3 months time. In addition to reading this book, I used recipes from the American Heart Assoc. cookbook, excersized almost every day, and read the "Cholesterol Down" book. This book has helped me understand how to change my life for the better, giving me the information to understand why I needed various diet adjustments.
In particular, I really enjoy the muffin recipes in the back of the book. And typically eat 2-3/day! Benecol also now makes a chewy caramel that I used to help get my intake of plant stanols/sterols as per the recommendations.

Having been on his program for 3 months I have normal numbers! I had been told that there was nothing more that they could do. I had 4 heart attacks with bypass surgery and stents put in to save my life. I went from an A1C of 12 down to 7.1 in three months with strick diet and many many supplements but it's working.I had been taking every diabetic pill and insulin known to man to no avail. My heart related tests are normal after being over by hundreds. They gave great advise you have to be in charge of your own health what works and doesn't. I am thankful and highly recommend the book.

Written by two cardiologists.By far the most informative book I've read so far on heart disease. It's an easy read, yet chucked full of information you need & must know. Unfortuneately when we see a doctor or cardiologist they focus solely on the symptom, they have little or no time to devote to prevention nor a cure. You'll be happy to know...as the book states you CAN stop deadly cardiovascular plaque before it's too late.

this was a decent book with a lot of good usuable information. It is a Must Read for anyone over 45 who has a poor diet and is over weight. It is written by medical doctors who are interested in healing the body-not just treating the symtoms. there are also many suppliments that they recommend that are available in most stores (unlike Kevin Trudeau who recommends product not even available in the U.S.)!! It was well worth the money and I strongly recommend it to any one who is concerned about heart disease.

This is an excellent book for anyone interested in Cardiac health.
Although I am a registered nurse and have a genuine interest as I have a heart condition, I think that anyone would find this book helpful.
The explanations are easy to understand and the advice is excellent. I have already been following much of what has been suggested but there were other areas that I didn't know about that were very helpful. My cardiologist advised me to read this as I don't want to use conventional medicine unless absolutely necessary, due to the side effects. I am really please with the results since I have followed this regime and so is my cardiologist. The heart is a muscle whose cells need feeding - if not we have inflamation leading to heart attacks and strokes etc
I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in living a healthier life.

The Pritikin Edge is a wonderful book. It is filled with a number of great tips that will teach you how to live a healthier lifestyle. Unlike many health books that require you to go on specific diets or exercise on specific equiptment, the Pritikin Edge continues to do what the Pritikin program has done for nearly 50 years, educate! Reading this book will enlighten you and provide you with tools to jump start your healthy lifestyle program by learning how to cope with stress, eat a healthy diet, and engage in appropriate exercise for overall well being. Nothing compares to two weeks at the Pritikin Center in Miami, but if you cant make it there, this is the next best thing. After reading this book you will certainly be hungry, but not for more food, only more knowlege and health tips. I read the Pritikin Principle and loved that book too. I have found more tips on their web site. This book is well worth the minimal time and effort to read the book. Buy it used or new here on amazon. Its a small price to pay in comparison to that bypass procedure! Good luck in your search for health. The Pritikin Edge: 10 Essential Ingredients for a Long and Delicious Life

The Pritikin Edge is a concise, comprehensive and easy to digest nutritional, exercise, and life-style program that will lead you from lethargy to energy and from poor health to good health. You will also learn the importance of taking care of your mind in taking care of your body. If you like yourself, give yourself a gift. Buy a few for people you love as well. Pritikin is a way of life, not a fad, and we all need a permanent, science-based, practical way to stay healthy and feel good.

Well, life "tastes" the best--you can just enjoy it, be here for yourself, for others and if you're reading this, you probably are wanting to "save" yourself or other loved ones. Don't get into fear--the diet, let alone going to Pritikin, is not torture and deprivation, you'll not starve at all, you'll fill yourself up on people nourishment and fun! You'll laugh, you'll smile, you'll entertain and tell stories and you'll discover that miracles can happen, your health can be improved or restored. You'll regain your confidence in yourself, you'll walk tall. You'll be back in control and in charge but you won't have to be some dictator to all your rebellious voices so much any more, those voices that say to you that you deserve all the fatty meals, ice cream and cookies or just the normal toxic diet that most Americans eat every day of their lives, the wonderful meals your mother cooked for you (sorry to the well intended moms out there, don't think they had Pritikin in those days). Those voices, to the contrary, will become your buddies for they care about you in that strange manner and ways they've interacted with you over the years. I've been to "Pritikin" ten times over the years. I owe my life to these folks, the principles. Am not "fixed" or "perfect," in fact, I keep going back for a tune up and reinforcement. Yet, I have no doubt that my life has been greatly extended and same with countless others. I have witnessed this, seen so many times with my eyes, heard with my ears the transformations that Pritikin has made in the lives of so many. It is not torture, being there is fun. Learning is fun. Well, the "diet" is not a diet, it is an education, learning to start a new lifestyle within what you already have. Trust me, you'll like it. The staff is great and, I'd have to say, the guests keep me coming back. They are usually somewhat older and sort-of-like-me are either there because they've hit somewhere close to their bottom (and want to live!) or just because they are now so healthy thanks to Pritikin that they keep coming back--it's a great vacation (believe it or not--consider believing it tho) there. Buy this book. And, better yet, buy the experience (and the book). Hopefully, I'll see you there at Pritikin and by the way, I'm single, and available, lol, so hope to see you there and we'll dance!

Taking it with me everywhere I go...

I'm reading the Pritikin Edge with my highlighter. There are many nuggets of gold that I will want to refer to again and again. This book is fast becoming my new best friend and I am grateful for the information that is found between the covers. Other people talk about diets - but Pritikin is going to help me with a lifestyle change.

The Pritikin Edge is not a fad diet book. It is a book about living a healthier life through nutritious, low-fat foods, moderate exercise and stress reduction. The authors build upon more than three decades of scientific research and experience at the Pritikin Longevity Center. But they have not written a ponderous nutrition textbook. Instead, the authors offer a practical, easy-to-read (though science-based) method of healthy living with an emphasis on promoting heart health. This book is for readers of all walks of life who very simply seek a healthier lifestyle. The Pritikin Edge centers on choosing the right foods and offers targeted exercises and recipes from the Pritikin Longevity Center. I recommend a copy for yourself and some extra copies as holiday or birthday gifts for family and friends. Don't postpone taking care of yourself any longer.

I bought this for my wife who has postpartum cardiomyopathy so we could really understand what the cardiologist was saying and doing. Prior to reading it we had been concerned that our cardiologist wasn't engaging us in many "standard" heart failure treatments that we had researched which might improve her daily quality of life. This book really helped my wife and I understand all the CHF jargon and, most importantly, what the heart meds do and how they are supposed to work in the body. Because of this book and other research we have engaged another cardiologist for a second opinion and learned that there are indeed other treatments and therapies available to us. Net Net - this book helps you engage in knowledgeable conversations with your doctor which is key to your survival and successful treatment.
4 stars only because I wish the author had expounded more on some of the topics.

Kathy Kastan's, From the Heart: A Guide to Living Well with Heart Disease,
brings awareness and understanding to women who are facing emotional challenges AND living well while in the process.

I wish this book had been available to me after my heart attack. I also live with the aftermath of 16 coronary artery stents and a quadruple bypass surgery. This book gives women with heart disease "peace of mind" and validates that you are not alone. While reading this book, you will catch yourself nodding and thinking, "This happened to me. That is where that feeling came from! Now I understand."

One of many messages emanating from this book is to take care of the mind-body-spirit connection: that it will promote healing and assist in living a healthy life. Every woman should be given this book before any heart procedure or surgery, to better understand what to expect emotionally and how to deal with their challenges.

Thank you, Kathy Kastan, for this wonderful book!

I have never heard any of this information any where. This book is a must read. There is enough information here that makes a strong connection between calcium deposits, nanobacteria, and heart disease.

They do a great job in translating the terms for non medical people. Additionally, I would say that the relationship between the information presented and cancer represented about small percentage of the book, but the linkage is important and worth considering nevertheless.

I just finished reading an extraordinary book, The Calcium Bomb: The Nanobacteria Link to Heart Disease and Cancer. It also explains for the first time, the possible etiology and outline for a real treatment of my own ailment (which I know quite a bit about) ankloysing spondylitis. This is a work of excellent investigative scholarship and if its basic premise is true, namely that nanobacteria create calcium shells to protect themselves and can only be killed once they are unsheathed, then it may be one of the most important health books ever written. The relationship between nanobacteria and atherosclerosis and arteriosclerosis is portrayed convincingly.

Arterial Plaque can be removed
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2007-09-16
The book discusses how a newly discovered microorganism, nanobacteria, are responsible for the plaque that accumulates within our tissues as we age. Plaque buildup is what causes heart disease, and other circulatory issues. Beyond that it describes how the use of EDTA suppositories and the antibiotic tetracycline have been used remove plaque from arteries and restore health to many who would certainly die without this therapy.
There is some controversy in that nanobacteria are not currently scientifically accepted as being living organisms, and that they are not accepted as the cause of arterial plaque formation. The authors give compelling evidence that they are organisms and they do cause plaque formation. Beyond the scientific argument about nanobacteria, there is no debate that arterial plaque and calcification are major contributors to heart disease, and that EDTA chelation therapy can remove this plaque in many people. The book gives numerous examples of those who have been saved from this therapy, and it provides references to where this therapy can be obtained.
It does downplay the effectiveness of oral EDTA chelation, and it highly recommends the use of tetracycline. In that, it seems to favor a therapeutic regimen that is currently available through only one source, and at a premium price. I am trying to give useful information here rather than a simple review. I have researched this to quite an extent and believe that oral EDTA chelation is fairly effective, it is much easier to take, and it is a lot cheaper than the suppositories they recommend. Beyond that garlic and curcumin, are very safe and effective herbs that offer some anti-plaque benefits.
This is one of the best books I have ever read. It is very thoroughly researched and referenced. Currently the web site www.calcify.com simply displays a message stating that the authors are working on an updated version of the book. I will certainly buy it as soon as it's available. I am disappointed that this book is already out of print and that currently it is selling for such a premium price. If you suffer from life threatening heart disease then by all means buy it, it will be worth every penny to you. If you have more of a scientific interest then you may wish to wait for the updated version or research EDTA chelation therapy on the web.
I would prefer that the future version of the book focus more on methods of removing plaque from the body and less on the scientific debate over nanobacteria.

Good book, but there are other factors involved in calcification.

This book is the natural complement to "Calcification: the Aging Factor," by Mark Mayer. While these books are on the same subject, they are both very different in content. The Calcium Bomb is about nanobacteria; while "Calcification: the Aging Factor" talks about other factors that can contribute to calcifications.

This is one of the best books out for preparing heart healthy recipes and the big plus is that there is so much more information than I expected regarding the heart and how to take care of it!

Before buying this book I first checked it out at the library because I don't need any more useless cookbooks in my house. I was thrilled to find that this book is not only a great cookbook but also an amazing source of heart-health information. Having a strong family history of heart disease, I must be very diligent about maintaining a heart-healthy lifestyle. This book answered every question I had and then some. It gave me some reassurance that my family history is not a death sentence and gave me the knowledge I need to maintain a healthy lifestyle. I was so impressed with this book that I bought two copies - one to keep and one for my brother.

Excellent cookbook and more

The first half of this book covers basic heart health and behavioral changes that lead to better health. This information is well-presented and is would be enough to implement heart-healthy eating. But we also get the added bonus of the second half of the book which covers a number of easy recipes. Don't wait until there's something wrong, start now and stay healthy!

I love this book and have already bought it for a friend and have recommended it to a bunch of my friends.

Don't buy this book, if you don't want to live, a long and
healthy life!
Don't buy this book, if you don't mind, helping your Cardiologist pay off his Ferrari!
And don't buy this book, if you don't mind, having your
entire chest cavity ripped open like a Crab shell!

But, if you want to actually "cure" your Heart disease,
instead of just "treating its symtoms", then, DO....BUY
THIS BOOK!

EECP is the #1 Heart Theraphy in China!

Buy this book and then learn why the almighty ($) based Western Medicine is much more apt to "operate", than the less invasive based (less trama and less bleeding) Eastern methods.

EECP has already been approved by the FDA for Angina!

It also works on, and CURES, Congestive Heart Failure, (since it "renews" the Heart muscle itself and is refered to as the "Natural By-pass")! It, (EECP), has also shown great results with other diseases, like Alzhiemer's, Parkinson's, Sexual Dysfunction and even Diabetes.

But it does have a very notable side effect! Most patients lose
10-12 pounds after a course of treatments! So, we might have to throw in, weight-loss!

If you have a loved one going through the pain and suffering of the current Heart treatments, you, NEED, TO BUY THIS BOOK!

EECP - passive exercise - super benefits

The following are my notes to myself on this great book.
( I take notes on each of the 200+ books I read each year)

Alternate names: virtual exercise, passive exercise, deep tissue massage, big squeeze (austistic?)
The 35 session program strengthens the cardio system - by applying pressure at the right time during each heart beat. Makes it much easier for the patient to get into exercise later.
Stronger and become better able to deliver more blood, oxygen, and nutrients.
Typically needs to have second treatment in 5 years - similar to by-pass and other heart treatments. Far less expensive than US invasive techniques.
35 session treatment plan was established in China. China now has 1,800 EECP centers (US has 650 locations) . 74% of Chinese patients maintained improvement for at least 7 years pg 58. Also patients were 4X less likely to suffer a cardiac death in the following 8 years. Chinese doctor's salary, until several years ago, was based on keeping person healthy, not on treating problems. 1 million Chinese have had EECP treatment. They use it for a wide variety of circulatory conditions, including strokes, Parkinson's disease, and visual impairments (pg 59)
Blood flow is critical to Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ayurvedic Medicine, Ancient Egyptian Medicine, and Ancient Greek Medicine pg 34
EPA approval for chronic stable angina and cardiogenic shock, then in 2002 congestive heart failure pg 61
There was a successful double-blind test of EECP in 1999.
Which prompted Medicare to being paying for that treatment for that heart problem in that year.
Very impressive international Angina statistics on page 75. 5,000 patients,
140 centers, patients had been diagnosed with heart problems for 10 years on average,
85% had undergone at least one bypass surgery or angioplasty or stent previously
42% had diabetes
32% had congestive heart failure
84% were deemed inoperable
Results after 3 years: 35% no angina, % of patients with 4 obstructed arteries went from 23% down to 5%
In the US, EECP is used for Stable Angina. Elsewhere it is used for both stable and unstable (comes on suddenly) angina - success rate being 74% and 80% respectively.
Her report on use with elderly: 24 patients with average age = 85.
96% reduced symptoms, increased activity level, and improved physical mobility - all with no adverse events. 81% maintained the benefit for at least 1 year.
Diabetes (9.5% of population) and EECP
Study of 658 patients with diabetes and symptomatic heart disease.
87% has previously had invasive procedure and were not candidates for additional surgery.
69% responded favorably and
72% still had benefits 1 year later.
None worsened. Also improved blood sugar control pg 106
Also helpful with Rheumatoid Arthritis (1% of population),
tinnitus decreased significantly in 47% after just 5-10 sessions (pg 102),
Some forms of deafness and blindness are also treated by Chinese with EECP
She believes that EECP gets you to the next fitness level, from whatever level you are at. pg 111
Sleep better; a side affect reported by many patients
While EECP is now offered to patients as treatment of last resort, various studies indicate that it could be the first treatment for heart disease. pg 123
2.4 million Americans have coronary artery disease and are considered to be inoperable. pg 123
Vasomedical leading manufacturer - 650 locations in the US 800 455 3327 www.naturalbypass.com
Washington as of Feb 2006: Seattle, Yakima, Long View, Vancouver
Poor blood flow -> blockages.
So she feels that need to work on better flow, not cleanup the consequence of poor flow. pg 124
EECP was first developed in US 30 years ago, but then widely adopted and evolved in China
Future: she believes that it will become the first treatment for heart disease, and perhaps even a way to prevent heart disease. pg 160

The only non-invasive, not the only non-surgical

I really like the sound of this treatment, no pain, no real risks and lots to gain. The book is very convincing that EECP works. Also, it is apparently covered by health insurance in the USA. The hardest thing might be committing to the one hour treatment sessions, five days a week for seven weeks.

On the down side, I was tempted to give the book 4 stars since the author trashes chelation therapy (on pg.190) but in all honesty, the EECP treatment if not the book, does deserve 5 stars! Braverman states that chelation therapy is unproven, 'harmful - even fatal - when administered to the wrong person'. I don't agree. Perhaps she is so sold on EECP that she felt it unnecessary to research chelation therapy. Having worked in a chelation clinic for over 10 years, it's my opinion that Chelation and EECP could produce far better results in tandem than either modality used alone and there seems no reason why they could not be used simultaneously, if not synergistically. After all the negative comments, there is one redeeming sentence at the end where she states "Chelation does not interfere with EECP, so you may undergo both therapies if you choose" p.191. I would be surprised if Dr Julian Whitaker, MD (from the Foreword) doesn't use both in his practice. Like chelation therapy, EECP requires some maintenance treatment down the track whether it be 1, 2 or 5 years later. A full course of EECP runs about $6,000 (covered by insurance) over 7 weeks; a full course of chelation runs about $2,000-3,000 over 10 weeks.

A Magnificent Life-Saving Book

Immensely readible and clear, this book documents the amazing efficacy of a simple, painless, out-patient procedure that resolves problems of angina and heart disease in 80% to 90% of sufferers without the pain, anxiety, costs and risks of having invasive cardiologists put stents in your arteries or attempt open heart surgery.

It shows, only too clearly, that the vast majority of cardiologists and cardiac surgeons are declining to advise patients of this option until the patients are so far gone from invasive efforts that no more can be done surgically.

At this point, if ever, these exhausted patients are told about EECP only to discover that it will work even for them.

The book also shows how double standards are used by professional entities to demand ever more "gold standard" studies of the efficacy of EECP while surgical methods, used universally, are not required to meet the same standards and, indeed, cannot ethically be tested to these standards anyway.

I learned about EECP from a Life Extension Magazine article, researched it myself and insisted on trying it. My decent and loving cardiologist readily agreed to the procedure once I raised it, agreed with my reasoning ( mainly non-invasive procedures before invasive ones), and said it had helped some of her patients. But had she told me about it before I insisted on trying it? No.

I read this book only after receiving my first EECP treatment and it explained to me, among other things, why I needed less nitroglycerine walking the dog even after one treatment of the thirty-five recommended! I do hope that all sufferers will read this book and, then, give a copy to their cardiologist.

Faced with this inspiring and documented book, I think your cardiologist will accept your wishes--as mine did--and that, in the end, the cardiology profession itself will be forced to come to its senses.
