The doctors who had to say no - Inspirational stories
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2000-07-05
Imagine making your way through medical school, learning little or nothing about natural fertility regulation, and prescribing contraceptives only to later learn the potential physical and spiritual damage you may have caused your patient.

This is the path traveled by the 15 physicians who share their very compelling stories in this wonderful little book.

All 15 were, at one time, doctors who prescribed contraceptives for their patients. Each story, tells in a unique way, how each physician made the courageous and often difficult choice to no longer prescribe contraception.

The testimonies should be read by any physician concerned with the health of his or her patients. Their witness speaks loudly in opposition to a culture which has embraced the contraceptive mentality and the infertility, abortions, death, and destruction that go with it.

It takes a special person to do and compile this many nice things! Dr. Hatcher's sensitivity, humor, and candor allow him to understand human nature and connect with people in a way that is becoming a lost art. These thoughtful suggestions truly helped me consider the nice things that I do--and how I would like to do more of them!

I purchase the newest edition every year. It is concise, logically laid out, and meets my needs as a busy nurse working in college health. My only complaint is the small print, becoming more of an issue the older I get! Hee hee! But hey, that's what glasses are for!

A revelation: Leads to a focus upon woman-centered midwifery
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-01
This book is a must-read! I've been involved in maternity care reform (and revolution!) for thirty-one years, and Murphy-Lawless' book makes crystal-clear just how destructive and repressive obstetrics has been for women historically, and why most women today have been seduced by so-called "scientific obstetrics," their birthing experiences taken from them in so many ways. It pinpoints over and over again just how women's strengths, flexibility, emotional and physical abilities to bear their children have been denied them systematically for three hundred years. This book, rich with factual research, gives us a great deal of knowledge and strength, for once we understand the forces that fashioned modern obstetrical practice, we can regain the power and the strength to fashion a world in which we become the subjects, the "agents" of our own experiences, mainly by asserting that having children is a complex, profound event of life and health. Listen to the birthing stories of the women you know. Listen to what they say, and what they are not saying. See where they have felt strong, or felt that something important has been taken away from them. Examine your own strengths, and your own fears in the light of the information in this book. Have a wonderful read!

Reviewing Sex

This work serves as both an incredible study of German feminist history, but also as an interesting look into the social construction of birth control in a rather atypical Western nation. Grossmann is clear and concise, chronicling the period by major players and important legislation, focusing mainly on the movement to reform Paragraph 218 (the anti-abortion clause in the Civil Code) but also touching upon satellite issues, such as eugenics, cultural backlash, and of course the effects of the Third Reich. This book is as equally informative as it is interesting. Overall a great read.

Natural birth control

Review Date: 2008-01-21
When a dear friend of mine wanted to know about natural birth control after having twins that would not violate the dictates of his religion (and his wife spoke primarily Spanish) , I did some research on the web and found this book for him. Not having read it personally, I can only say that they were very enthused, and "learned things they never knew" which I thought was terrific. The twins are 3 now with no younger siblings so something worked.

A truly great resource
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2000-08-19
I wish I could provide this book to everyone who teaches about sexuality and HIV, as well as those who make policy, funding, administrative, and other decisions about sexuality and/or HIV education. This is the single best resource on this topic in existence for new educators and veterans.

It's all here: theoretical foundations for educational programs; descriptions, definitions and samples of a wide range of teaching/training methods (enough lectures, already!); how-to-choose which methods, when, why, and for whom; and a historical and current context for sexuality education. This comprehensive content is presented in a variety of ways, including real stories, some funny, some sad, all well-chosen to illustrate and enrich the valuable teachings.

If you're only going to buy one resource on sexuality/HIV education, make it this one.

You may have been eleven once, but you were never their age. Thanks to the Internet, graphic images in the media, and their "know-it-all" friends, kids today grow up earlier than ever. They have questions, and as a parent, your responsibility is to clear up the mixed messages and lead them to a healthy, value-centered view of sexuality. Sure, conversations with your kids about sex and their changing bodies can be uncomfortable --- but they don't have to be. Jim Burns gives expert advice on how and when to talk with your children, and he provides answers to the most difficult questions your kids and teens might ask, like:

How far is too far?
If you do "everything but sex," are you still a virgin?
Is self-stimulation wrong?
I think I'm addicted to porn. What can I do to get help?
Is a boy/girl sleepover okay if there's a chaperone?

The world's culture may have cheapened sex, but God's view of sexuality is wonderfully made. Talking with your kids at a young age will help them make more godly decisions along the way, but they'll need conversation with you at every age. This is your opportunity to establish in them a lasting sexual integrity that will extend throughout their lives.
