A perfect place to start your IVF research

Review Date: 2004-01-22
I picked this book up as one of the first reference books when my husband and I began to investigate IVF. The book is not about ethics debates and does not begin to address the emotional issues surrounding infertility and assisted reproduction, but it does tell you the technological facts of the various procedures. The author discusses testing, diagnosis and treatments as well as giving sample calendars and timelines you can expect if you undergo the emotional and physical journey towards conception. I felt very prepared after reading (actually studying) this book, so much so that my own reproductive endocrinologist was amazed at the questions I asked when undergoing treatment.

This is not a hand holding book, it's straight forward factual information to let the reader know the options and facts about the treatment of infertility. While the author is himself a reproductive endocrinologist, there are very few references to himself or his clinic.

He's a urologist

Review Date: 2006-01-06
A urologist by training, Dr. Silber is not trained as a reproductive endocrinologist, making his techniques very technology oriented as he is not trained in reproduction, only reproduction technologies. He would do better to stop promoting technology as the answer to reproduction (quite a money-maker for the doctors involved) and stick to doing reversing vasectomies as he was trained to do. While he offers alot of good technical info the book is utterly lacking in medical and surgical treatment options, something he apparently doesn't believe in. The medical evidence points to better results and better health for mother and babies when medical/surgical intervention is used--lower reimbursement but much better for everyone involved except centers that promote IVF and tech based medicine.

Informative but incomplete

Review Date: 2002-10-09
I liked the optimism of this book and Dr. Silber's advocacy of an aggressive approach to treatment, but I wouldn't say this is a comprehensive book because it doesn't really address the emotional/psychological aspects of infertility and its treatment. Plus, Dr. Silber's self-aggrandizing tone was suprising and distracting in a book that is supposed to be about helping others, not self-promotion.

I did not think this book was very good. I have been married for 2 years and I did not learn anything new from this book. I would say that over half the book and most of the exercieses are about how to play with yourself. For those of us that are not into that this is not a good book (Besides I wanted a book about sex not masturbation). Some of the exercieses are good but they seem to repeat themself and not expand on anything. It does teach some good stuff about self control which you can learn from but not very good for a beginner and not much there for the advanced. If you have even a little imagination and common sense you should be able to figure most of this out on your own.

Barbara Keesling's sex and relationship book, Sexual Pleasure (2nd ed., 2005), is a great book for both women and men, with lots of practical advice and over one hundred exercises, some specifically for men or for women, many for both. I especially liked her clear expression of the importance and exercising of the PC muscles for men and women. She not only deals nicely with the G-spot orgasm and female ejaculation (a favorite of mine), but also brings new research results about three other female sexual arousal centers: the A-spot, U-spot, and X-spot. Readers will both learn and be able to apply Keesling's information to expand the possibilities of their own love lives.

I've been married for 13 years, and I'm madly in love with my wife. We're close in every way, but the sex side hasn't been a big part of our marriage. (Sure, having 2 young kids in the house might have something to do with it!)

This book helped opened up a dialog about sex in our marriage. Since it focuses on developing intamacy and pleasure (as opposed to offering just a variety of positions), my wife was receptive to it. She's not a prude, but she was brought up with the idea that sex is serious business. (I was brought up without ANY discussions of sex!) Keesling's book let us learn together to be open to more sensuality. It's helping my wife get in touch with herself (pun intended), and will hopefully lead to viewing sex as a natural way to relax and have fun togehter. Keesling helps take the anxiety out of it. If that's what you're looking for, then this is a good place to begin.

I really enjoyed this book! I've been looking for a training manual for my penis for a long time and this one is the best I've found so far. I believe the exercises have been helpful. When I find the right woman I will be prepared to give her so much of myself, she will die in my body. Barbara provides very good male exerices for my sensitive and reasonable hang. There should be more books like this for males who want to keep there sexual staying power.

The only missing thing, and for that reason, missing from ALL similar books, is a list of food and drink that will keep my pride and joy, health and in habitual motion without taking those pills and other crap I get in my SPAM folder that probably will hurt me.

I hope she comes out with another book like this... being bias... for males.

This book definitely doesn't fall into the "playful ideas to spice up a decade-old marriage" category. The series of exercises, with the writer's continual admonitions to NOT skip any, because they MUST be done in order, made it seem more like math homework for a class you wish you had remembered to drop in time. Too much work and not enough fun, yuk.

The author approaches widening her sexual knowledge intellectually with the enthusiasm of a talent scout seeking her next discovery. She takes courses, enters programs, interviews practical experts in the love making arena. Recounting the highlights for our benefit with step by step instructions. Believe it or not, I had this on my wish list and an online friend sent me a copy. I am forever indebted. It may not be the ultimate techniques manual, but it definitely was an enjoyable book. The author is obviously a lady who enjoys living life and not just sitting on a fence listening to the lively tales of others' adventures! She also has the spirit of experiment, and either tries out different philosophies or styles of sexual satisfaction or interviews others who have. She reviews ancient asian techniques, the sexual philosophy of Tanta, and more modern approaches intended to get one "in touch with ones own body." It took me forever to read--for which I appologize to the giver--not because it was complicated, dull or lengthy, but because I enjoyed reading it a little at a time.

It's amazing how many things I did not think of before that are mentioned in this book. I read a lot, but the tips for massage, using the under-side of your tongue, using a caligraphic brush, different positions and almost ALL that is pleasurable during sex are amazing. A must read. The chapters about masturbation and genital massage are very detailed and well written. My new favorite! (old favorite: Mantak Chia's "Multi-Orgasmic Man")

I liked this book because it showcased how awesome sex is just as much about attitude and thinking as it is physical. This book is replete with fluff and not an ounce of scientific or even quasi-scientific knowledge. Instead, the author tells men how to masturbate and kiss, and her other advice is equally lacking in novelty. An average person would prefer a discussion of more substantive topics which may impart knowledge that the reader was not acquainted with decades ago.

Misinformation

Review Date: 2006-10-15
The books makes no mention that condoms could not possibly afford protection against any virus nor even mentions the real and serious dangers associated with latex condom use. Hardy a word about the 57 FDA listed toxic proteins, the twenty plus FDA toxins nor the carcinogens and teratogens (cause birth defects).

The real facts as outlined by the Editor of Rubber Technology are simply ignored.

_______

Editor of Rubber Chemistry and Technology, Dr. C. Michael Roland of the
U.S. Naval Research Laboratory in Washington D.C., spoke about his
research on "intrinsic flaws" in latex rubber condoms and surgical gloves
(published in Rubber World, June, 1993).

Roland said that what I am about to relate is "common knowledge among good
scientists who have no political agenda."

Electron microscopy reveals the HIV virus to be about O.1 microns in size
(a micron is a millionth of a metre). It is 60 times smaller than a
syphilis bacterium, and 450 times smaller than a single human sperm.

The standard U.S. government leakage test (ASTM) will detect water leakage
through holes only as small as 10 to 12 microns (most condoms sold in
Canada are made in the U.S.A., but I'll mention the Canadian test below).
Roland says in good tests based on these standards, 33% of all condoms
tested allowed HIV-sized particles through, and that "spermicidal agents
such as nonoxonol-9 may actually ease the passage."

Roland's paper shows electron microscopy photos of natural latex. You can
see the natural holes, or intrinsic flaws. The "inherent defects in
natural rubber range between 5 and 70 microns."

And it's not as if governments don't know. A study by Dr. R.F. Carey of
the U.S. Centers for Disease Control reports that "leakage of HIV-sized
particles through latex condoms was detectable for as many as 29 of 89
condoms tested." These were brand new, pre-approved condoms. But Roland
says a closer reading of Carey's data actually yields a 78% HIV-leakage
rate, and concludes: "That the CDC would promote condoms based on [this]
study...suggests its agenda is concerned with something other than public
health and welfare." The federal government's standard tests, he adds,
"cannot detect flaws even 70 times larger than the AIDS virus." Such tests
are "blind to leakage volumes less tha one microliter - yet this quantity
of fluid from an AIDS-infected individual has been found to contain as
many as 100,000 HIV particles."

As one U.S. surgeon memorably put it, "The HIV virus can go through a
condom like a bullet through a tennis net."

I have read this book and am grateful for the information. Finally, a well-written, comprehensive, informative book that dispels many myth, myths that have been around for decades. With this book, you can arm teenagers and young adults with life saving information. Condom Sense is bold and brave in a time when even pharmacists are being given the power not to dispense The Pill for personal reasons. What is next? Condoms? I live in an area that has an alarming teen pregnancy rate and a growing AIDS epidemic. This same area is trying to make "abstinence only" the sex education policy of the schools. Condom Sense should be required reading. Thank you Dr. Monica Sweeney and Rita Grisman for taking on this subject in such an eloquent and necessary way. When will the book be available in Spanish?

I thought I had all of the facts about condoms and STDs, and I was dead wrong. Do YOU know which, if any, forms of Hepatitis a condom protects you against, for instance? I didn't. This guide covers the material comprehensively.

Sweeney packs the guide with practical, life-saving information. It's a clear, concise, and (actually) entertaining read, despite the topic. I'm giving it to my friends for Valentine's Day. Everybody -- White/Black - Straight/Gay - Man/Woman - Adult/Child -- needs to either be informed for the first time, or have the facts laid out for them again. Condom Sense is a great way to do that. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

When Tim told me the subject of FIRST HAND , I was doubtful that the subject would lend itself to a complete book, but I underestimated the boy. It offers a wide variety of fascinating and erotic glances at one of gay sex's most popular sports. There are first hand accounts of fisting, funny and serious; a thoughtful historical background; words of medical wisdom cunningly presented; and, finally, a wonderfully exciting and moving novella of a first timer and a wise mentor. Even if fisting isn't your scene, it's still a very good read.

Notes From The Author

I'm Tim Brough, and I collected a wide variety of information for my latest book. "First Hand: An Erotic Guide To Fisting" starts with a history from noted Leather historian Jack Fritscher Ph.D. (which reads like a chronology of San Francisco through '60's and '90's) and ends with a hot piece of fiction from former Drummer magazine contributor and disabled-rights advocate, Michael Agreve. In between I covered health with a Doctor and Physical Therapist, club life with two club presidents, the online experience via the webmaster of the RedRightWeb site, a man who recounted his first encounter with footing, and, in the book's sixth chapter, dozens of brief interviews where the participants related their thoughts about handballing to me.

The books has nine chapters, if you include Dr. Fritscher's introduction. The chapters include segments on anatomy, play "guides" and instructions, the chapter with the Doctor and therapist, the segement on clubs community and the web, and the 'first hand' accounts that make up the interviews chapter.

I interviewed over 200 individuals in preparation for "First Hand," and the diversity shows. There's everything from poetry (really!) to hardcore Sm related through the book's near-160 pages. A brief index includes references to books, DVD's, events and people. I feel this is easily the most comprehensive guide to this fetish ever compiled, and I am proud of the final work. I hope you share my enthusiasm, and thanks for reading.

I was looking for a book that would serve more as an instructional guide. This book is about 95% stories of others' reported experiences, mainly from the 70's. If you are looking more for erotic reading, this book will serve its purpose. However, if you are looking for more of a directional book, try Trust, the Hand Book.

First Hand is much, much more than an erotic guide to fiction. It is a resource guide, collection of personal stories and anecdotes, history, and comprehensive and concise "How-To" manual to Fisting in addition to the erotica. The information is precise and helpful, covering everything from anal health to prepping for fisting in advance, both physically and mentally. But most of the information applies to bottoming in general as well, so it is of interest beyond the fisting community. I have read a number of books that examine anal sex for men, but found Brough's book most thorough and complete when it comes to information that every good bottom should know to be clean and ready for when the penetrating moment arrives. As manual and erotica for the fisting community, the book should be required reading. For all others interested in anal sex, it could prove an invaluable guide.

The BookThat Started It All

Review Date: 2001-08-11
In the late'60s and early '70s sexual liberation was in the air. Many -- perhaps even most -- well-heeled Americans welcomed the loosening up of sexual restrictions that had been so oppressive during the postwar era. The sexual double standard was waning, young people were being told that they had the right to sensual experimentation before and outside of marriage, and making it all possible were the new miracle contraceptives: the iud and the pill. Times had changed for the better, and it was a new epoch of progress, right?

Wrong.

Journalist Barbara Seaman had the courage and insight to peer behind the happy facade that characterized the first wave of American sexual liberation,at some troubling realities. She asked simple questions -- the kind that annoy everyone, because they're unanswerable. Why was so much research being done on female contraceptives that were potentially harmful, with none being done on male contraceptives? (The condom STILL remains the only male option.) Since sexual intercourse is generally more pleasurable for men than women, why didn't men introduce harsh chemicals and dangerous contraptions into their systems? If the pill was so safe, why was it making women feel so sick? Why were patients who reported their symptoms told that it was all in their heads? Why were the physicians and chemists behind all these products male?

_The Doctor's Case Against the Pill_ compresses many of Seaman's findings and inaugurated her career as a lifelong whistle blower and advocate of women's health. Like her later work, _Free and Female_,it is a pathfinding book that exposes the ideology behind the health industry and the self-interest of so many medical practitioners. It reminds us how easily retrograde assumptions are recycled into the most seemingly progressive and forward-looking social initiatives. Like most pioneering works, its results still brace and shock; the expanded edition incorporates Seaman's more recent research. This is a must-read for anyone interested in women's health and women's history.

As many people know, because of this book, there are now warning labels on packages of birth control pills. Thirty years ago,Barbara Seaman had the courage to play that most thankless role:the party-pooper. In the swinging '60s and '70s, her findings met with a cold reception. But because of her work, women today lead healthier and safer lives.

Historically important, and still relevant today

A mere thirty years ago, the Pill's dosage of estrogen was dangerously high, resulting in side effects such as strokes, depression, obesity, blood clots, and heart attacks. Yet gynecologists at the time brushed off women's concerns, telling them that they were nothing more than "psychological." Enter Barbara Seaman, whose 1969 book The Doctors' Case Against the Pill warned women about the health risks and held doctors and pharmaceutical companies to task for their sexism -- as well as for their greed and incompetence. Her book prompted the Senate to hold hearings investigating the safety of the Pill. As a result, the Pill today is much safer, and each packet comes with a warning about potential side effects and contraindications.

Well, that was thirty years ago... why buy the book today? First, because it is an important historical record of the way female patients have been mistreated. And second, because Seaman has updated it to include new information about the Pill's pitfalls over the years as well as an excellent chapter about Norplant, a contraceptive used widely around the globe even though it causes its own host of health problems. No wonder Gloria Steinem has called Seaman "the first prophet of the women's health movement."

If you've read other books by Barbara Seaman (and you should take a look, if you haven't), you know that she is a crusader for the health of women. She will tell you the truth about what birth control and other hormones are doing to your health - and about the side effects of the pill that your doctor isn't likely to mention. Please, if you're going to take hormones, inform yourself as fully as possible about what you're really signing up to do. I came close to losing my life from side effects of the birth control pill and "natural" progesterone cream. Don't let it happen to you - Barbara Seaman is a great resource.

Recently I've been doing research on oral contraceptives and their hormonal basis and I picked up this book because I thought it might have something to tell me about how the pill worked. Of course the book has no such thing. The words "estriadol" and "progestin" the two main components of the pill are not even in the index. The book is a collection of anectodal complaints from women about their experiences with the pill without any basis in science or medicine. Seamen doesn't even talk about how the side effects reported could have been caused by the pill, she simply reports them as fact. There are interviews with laypeople, doctors, and psychologists but there are absolutely no references located in this book from peer reviewed scientific journals. She does describe some scientific studies but completely skews the results. Basically this book is unscientific, sensationalistic, and poorly written.

I don't usually buy products like 'this' - but I've been so impressed with the effectiveness of other Kelly Howell cds I've purchased - I thought I'd give it a try. I've used it now for close to a year.

First I was happy this was ALL music - guided imagery annoys me. So if you're looking for a step by step - this cd is not for you.

I must say the longer I listened to this cd the better 'things' got. At 50 something, I never experienced "multiple" anything with a partner - let's just say my significant other and I are very happy!

The more I listen to this during my 'downtime' such as relaxing or sleeping the better it works.

It's great when used alone also. This is 'helpful' when engaged in a long distance relationship - such as I am.

Soooo - I just - relax ... focus on and flow with the music ... and Enjoy ...

Great Music - exactly what you would expect

This is certainly an interesting read, though leans a little more toward the empirical than I would like. I would like for there to be more "guts" in this: for example, WHAT did couples use for contraception at this time, rather than how many people were practicing some form of contraception. It is interesting, but leaves me wanting to know more than was covered in here.

We are so dazzled by the gilded Victorian that we often refuse to look at the evidence of ordinary human needs and desires in the 19th century. Ms Brodie examines 100 years of attitudes and practices regarding an important aspect of marital reality -- the need to limit family size. The result is a fascinating examination of a topic that is usually ignored and often considered either non-existent or unimportant. Ms Brodie's energetic presentation is both analytical and scholarly with conclusions carefully supported by contemporary documentation. She also adds delightful textual flavor and dimension by threading excerpts from diaries and letters throughout her narrative.

The examination of Mary Pierce Poor's diary is illustrative. This unusual journal carefully records menstrual cycles and sexual contacts with Mary's husband Henry Varnum Poor from 1845 to 1868. When considering sexual abstinence as a birth control method, Ms. Brodie sees little evidence of this practice in the marital lives of the Poors, but does think that in 1851 they tried a physical separation for the summer to prevent conception. She quotes from Mary's diary to prove that this was not a happy solution. "I do not like to be long separated from you. We are happiest together, do not let us try absence again. I want to be with you, wherever you are, the rest of the summer, the rest of my life." Obviously, Mary enjoyed her conjugal pleasures, even if she was continuously worried about another pregnancy.

Overall this book is a extraordinary peak into the marital mores and realities of the Victorian period. It leaves no doubt that our ancestors grappled with the issues of family limitation and sexuality as rigorously as we do today. Terrific read. Great reference. Wonderful information.

While vasectomy may seem like a good idea at the time, warding off irresponsible, or trapping women and wives...often, life leads you to divorce, and eventually the desire to start a family again. After 2 failed (costly) vasovasectomies, we are still trying to decide why we made this decision. A wife with a history a "accidental "pregnancies was ultimately the cause and we will aspriate and continue to try to plan the first child in our family.
Freeze it, bank it and be glad it's there when you finally find the right person.
