This is a great book for those beginning to learn cardiac CT. The physics part is not very extensive, but is clear enough for a non-radiologist (ie cardiology fellow) to follow.

I bought this book because I had heard of Budoff and ended up completing the course offered by Rumberger. The book was thorough yet concise, easy to read yet containing complicated subject matter. My friend bought a different CT book and he ended up reading mine becuase he liked it better. Definately would recommend the book. The book will also help you fly through Level II training.

A reasonably helpful book when learning how to do cardiac ct.
Latter chapters seem a bit out of context (?? written earlier than the first half of the book).

Out of all the books in my collection on pediatric cardiac conditions I will have to say that this is the best one out there so far. It has more defects in it and describes them in simple terms then the others books I have seen. This is the first book a new parent should purchase when they find out that their child has a cardiac condition.

A must for parents of children with CHD

My husband and I found this very useful when our child was first diagnosed, I was always referring to the list of terms and the pictures.

My only regret is that of another review in that the statistical information is out of date.

Very Good

I learned a lot from reading this book when my daughter was in the hospital having her first heart surgery. But the mortality statistics are outdated. The outcomes for children having heart surgery and children with HLHS and Truncus are much more hopeful than they were in 1992.

As parents of two children with congenital heart defects, we found this book to be a wonderful resource. It is a must buy for parents who find themselves faced with the prospect of raising a child with a heart condition. This book does a wonderful job of describing the types of heart defects in terms the average person can understand.

Very good, but the information seems outdated.

This book was very informative, but we have found that the newer publication released in 1998 was more up to date. "Heart Defects in Children - What Every Parent Should Know" was written by a nurse, and has easier to understand explainations of the defects. It also has a draw in heart section where you can more easily visualize your child's defect. Check it out.

I found this book very intuitive, illustrations are wonderful, the author insights are exceptional. Although, I'm not a surgeon, this is still very good book for the anesthesiologist to understand the surgical perspective.
When I miss people and everything at Children Hospital-Boston. I get it all back again reading a chapter ,any chapter. It's so sentimental.

The book is what it claims to be, and have given me as an ultrasound technician an enormous amount of help. I especially liked the extent of anatomical detail given in the text. The illustrations, both line drawings and echocardiograms are of high quality.

This outstanding work on paediatric echocardiography is a reference book. It exhaustively deals with embryology and correlates them to congenital heart diseases. This information makes the task of cardiologists easier enabling him to seek the abnormality, and their associated defects. paediatric echocardiography is often likened to looking for a black cat in a dark room. This text, I believe throws an illumination on the elusive cat. it also deals with all congenital diseases in great details along with comments on surgical aspects and their aftermath as seen on echocardiography. Truly this book has great merits for all echo-cardiologists.

Complete information for specialists
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2001-02-15
I used this book during the preparation of my thesis. For this purpose, it was sometimes too detailed and complex. I think this book will be helpfull for congenital heart specialists, since all information is included for every heart defect, very well-organized. Every chapter on a certain malformation includes the history, physical appearance, auscultation, additional investigations and a clear summary. A lot of illustrations of ECG's or x-rays and pictures clarify the text. The book is (as the title says) specifically focussed on the clinical recognition of a malformation. For other purposes, such as studying longer-term outcome, the book does not provide the information.

This is an excellent pathology book covering practical pathologic aspects of congenital heart disease. If you are looking for a book on echocardiography, this is a nice supplement, but not a primary echo text.

A Classic

Review Date: 2008-09-30
This gem of a book will become a classic that belongs on the shelf of everyone with an interest in congenital heart disease. It distills the essence of the elegant papers, lectures, and texts on the subject that have been presented by Dr. Anderson and his esteemed colleagues through the years. The photographs and diagrams of congenital heart disease are indispensable to the beginner who seeks to understand cardiac morphology, and will be a permanent addition to the library of anyone who hopes to pass such knowledge on to others. The only somewhat unfortunate thing about this book is that it's title is somewhat misleading, in suggesting that it is, somehow, a handbook for those who seek to learn how to press the buttons on the echo machine and produce beautiful images without perspiring like the rest of us. The title almost trivializes the value of this volume. An earlier reviewer expressed these concerns, but that neophyte pediatric cardiologist has, by now, I would hope, realized that he unwittingly bought a book that he will need to guard from theft by junior colleagues in the future. In anticipation of that I am ordering several more copies, myself.

Good add to paediatric cardiology fellow library

I bought this book for my first Echo rotation in paediatric cardiology fellowship. This book concentrates on morphology of CHD in cross-sectional description with some echocardiography empasis. I must say that the echocardiographic findings were not clearly described or shown as I expected from the title of the book.. I think it is a good add to beginner library as morphology book, which can help to understand the anatomy of complex lesions better when you do Echo However, you will need another source to learn the echo finding for different CHD.

One of the MUST READ books in pediatric cardiology!!!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-07-19
This book gives a nice historical perspective of each of the common lesions a pediatric cardiologist faces in daily practice. It will take you through the morphology of each lesion, the diagnostic tools used, the available treatment options, the short-term and long-term outcomes, and survival curves.

Upon reading each chapter, you have a comprehensive understanding of why we manage certain diseases the way we do today. I think it's important to know what had been tried previously and what failed so that the field can continue to advance. If you want a book citing multicenter clinical trials and to tell you the advantages of an ACE-I over ARB in heart failure, this is not the book for you. However, if you want a read that will strengthen your true understanding of the cardiac conditions we treat and how we arrived to where we are today, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK. ***IF YOU ARE A PEDIATRIC CARDIOLOGY FELLOW, THIS IS A MUST READ***

Better than I thought at first... but still not good
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2005-01-12
The information contained in the book is somewhat interesting, and exhaustive in scope. It is best used as a "history book" without clinical applications. This is not how I interpreted the title and was hoping for more information about the natural course of CHD and how our approaches and diagnostic abilities have modified that. That being said, even with the "history book" approach, I think this is still a fair book (at best). There too many things to consider when putting together a book with such lofty goals of the title, and, perhaps it is impossible to actually achieve those goals. This book tries to be so comprehensive that it becomes incomprehensible. It is EXTREMELY confusing in the way it is presented. This detracts significantly from what you can actually get out of the book. Dr. Freedom clearly knows what he is talking about, but he could have found a much better way to convey it.
And last, but not least, with all due respect to Dr. Freedom, the editing in this book is AWFUL!!! Too many mistakes to count in EACH chapter, wrong diagrams/labels. This book would barely be passable if written by an individual who did not speak English as a primary language.
