This classic of ethnobotany was first published in 1924. Louis Lewin (1850 - 1929) was a world famous pharmacologist and this interesting work remains a landmark of psychedelic research.

The preface provides an overview of psychological considerations; the introduction looks at the motives for the use of these substances, the importance of the mental constitution in relation to external stimuli, tolerance and habituation, and immunity against poisons.

The author then looks at the mode of action and the classification of narcotic and stimulant drugs. The next section, EUPHORICA, investigates mental sedatives like opium, cocaine and codeine and its derivates. Next is PHANTASTICA (on hallucinogens) which deals with anhalonium lewinii, Indian hemp, fly agaric and the solanaceae.

Alcohol, chloroform, ether, benzene and nitrous oxide are discussed under INEBRIANTIA, whilst HYPNOTICA: SOPORIFICS deals with stuff like chloral, veronal, potassium bromide, sulphonal and kava-kava. The last chapter is called EXCITANTIA and investigates camphor, betel, kat, caffeine, tea, kola nut, guarana, cocoa, tobacco and others.

This early work remains a fascinating study of an impressive array of psychoactive substances from around the world. The text is engaging and will appeal to the general reader as much as the scientist. The book concludes with notes containing bibliographic references, and an index.

This book is great for a quick reference guide to check on medications that may be affected by massage therapy. It is thorough and I have been surprised to find so many medications that I never heard of listed in the book. This is a very helpful tool!

This book is simply amazing. If you are looking for alternative methods of medicine. This book covers it all. I have an 80 year old Stepfather that has had many problems with aches, pains, from old age and after years of hard manual labour. The medication that his normal doctor gave didn't seem to be helping a whole lot. So I started researching alternative medicine. I must have looked at 12 different books, but not a single one has been as much of a blessing as this one. I would like to personally thank the author of this book. It is a must buy!!

I couldn't wait for this revised version of the Volume One: Upper Limb to be released, and I was not disappointed. Unlike the traditional Kapandji figures, the volume is in full color, but in the same style of illustration as before. In most cases, the color adds to the understanding of the concept and is not just gratuitous. In addition, however, there is much more detailed explanation of the mechanics, more clinical application, and the addition of some intruiging questions in biomechanics such as "Codman's Paradox" and "Why Does the Forearm Have Two Bones?"

This is a thoroughly delightful expansion of a work that I first discovered in 1976 and which has changed little since then. The drawings remain incomparably lucid, yet detailed. Interestingly, this edition includes an index, something that has been missing from previous editions of any of the 3 volumes. Yet, there is no bibliography, which was included in the 5th Edition of Volume 2: Lower Limb.

My only criticism is that Elsevier has not made a teaching slide set (CD) of the drawings available to those of us who use these in our lectures.

Deceptively simplistic, this volume offers valuable insights into the movement of the joints. It arrived in beautiful condition and has been a valuable resource.

Anyone who works with or cares about end of life issues should read this book. Kearney, an MD with a specialty in palliative care (he worked with Cicely Saunders!) is a gorgeous, heartful writer and his ideas about healing are cutting edge and profound.

All Hospice people, medical students, physians and nurses should read this book.

As a beginner to essences, this book helped me choose what to use, and how. I use this book for human and pet needs.

...how much information is powerpacked into this pocket type booklet. It is a grand reminder for the most vital and commonplace ailments, and I wouldnt' miss it for the world. My shelves are bent with Hoffman, Duke, Ody, and the likes, but my travels are accompanied by this little treasure. Chances are if you are in a bind and can't remember, this will save the day. Fit for beginners as well as long time practicing herbalists, and a wonderful gift to open newbies eyes into the grand world of herbal healing. The only problem is to keep it. Don't let it leave your sight, it's one of those which won't come 'home' again. Best by more then one. This book won't cure major illness, but it'll sure patch up the daily scrapes!!
