Great Book, needs update
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2004-04-29
I love his book, it contains an overview of mind-body interactions from every perspective. It is well written (tho the language is British English), very well documented with references and has an un ashamedly clinical orientation. There is golden wisdom in the chapter on "Successful Aging" by Luskin & Newell, I particularly liked the discussion of the effects of listening and the importance of meaning. The treatment of Ischemic heart disease and Cancer are both superb, with helpful illustrations, but both need updates. 1997 was long ago, I have not found anything newer that serves so well as an introduction to the topic. I do recommend it highly.

A superb book!

Review Date: 2000-12-28
This book by Dr. Shealy deserves to be in print, in stock, and easily available, but as I write this review in December of 2000 it is none of those things. What a shame. Shealy, who holds both M.D. and Ph.D. degrees, is one of America's top alternative doctors, and he offers here an excellent explanation of many of the best, most helpful alternative health therapies. Joan Borysenko, the noted author, sums up the book's value in a blurb on the back cover: "The most valuable, practical resource in alternative medicine available today."

Very Scientific & Yet Down to Earth
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2004-08-02
About a year ago I bought this book & I can honestly say it's one of my most used books. It's very scientific & yet you don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure out what it is saying. The first part of the book deals with different disorders such as ADHD, Diabetes, Hepatitis, Arthritis, & much more. Under the different disorders it gives different examples of what people have tried to treat them with. Then it proceeds to different scientific tests that either proves or disproves the treatment.
The second part of the book deals with herbs & their therapeutic uses. Again here different uses & tests are provided for each herb. This book also discussed dosage recommendations, safety issues, drug interactions, & great references to other material. Overall this is a very useful book. The copy that I purchased contains over 1,000 pages & it covers everything from migraine headaches to the various vitamins. I recommend this book not only to the med student but to the average person just wanting useful & real information about herbs and their therapeutic uses.

The best resource on sacroiliac problems available
Helpful Votes: 23 out of 23 total.
Review Date: 1999-07-16
This book brings together the greatest amount of current clinical and basic science information on the importance of the pelvis, and particularly, the sacroiliac joints, and their relation to low back pain. The traditional medical model has assumed for years that only spinal structures, such as the discs and facet joints, are important in low back pain syndrome. This book clearly identifies the role of the sacroiliac joints in producing low back pain and provides information on both conservative and surgical treatment.

OM massage/bodywork students, professionals and teachers

having used the old standard (TGB) to teach kinesiology, anatomy, pathology, deep tissue massage and neuromuscular therapy for years at multiple massage schools, i have been impatiently waiting for an affordable alternative. while this book lacks kinesiology fundamentals (planes, movements, etc.), it is vastly superior for learning muscles and how to specifically palapate muscles and bony landmarks. moreover, it includes theory (based on current research) on trigger points, trigger point locations, the pain referral patterns, initiating and perpetuating factors and a variety of other insightful comments on specific muscle trigger points.

this book does not replace Travell's advanced volumes, but it is much more approachable.

for the study of muscles and movement, it's incomplete, but if you can get by without the kinesiology fundamentals (as mentioned above), it does replace the old standard text (TGB) as it includes thousands of full color (not dull monochromatic) enhanced photographs and drawings, it is thoughtfully organized (not wandering hither thither and patched with blurbs here and there), includes appropriate (not misleading) palpation technique and includes accurate, current references (not using old, arcane, misleading or inaccurate terms). addtionally, muscolino includes stretches for each specific muscle, information on body mechanics, draping, and massage techniques. the Elsevier website provides further highly valuable resources for both students and teachers. finally, there are two DVDs with four hours of demonstrations.

the book can be bundled with flashcards The Muscle and Bone Palpation Manual with Trigger Points, Referral Patterns and Stretching - Text and Flashcards Package. muscolino also has a muscle and bone coloring book Musculoskeletal Anatomy Coloring Book.

the only improvement (other than providing a chapter on kinesology fundamentals) might be a spiral binding as the student/licensed practitioner will constantly be referring to it and wanting to keep it open while practicing.

thank you Dr. Muscolino (and the star-studded lineup on contributors)!

OM tat sat.

Natural Energy: A Consumer's Guide to Legal, Mind-Altering and Mood-Brightening Herbs and Supple ments

A Great Resource for Substance Use (Drug & Alcohol) Clinicians
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-10-02
Mayell's "Natural Energy" is a normalizing, de-pathologizing discussion of human desire to experiment with its consciousness and a methodical, encyclopedic review of legal, socially-sanctioned mind-altering and mood-brightening herbs and supplements.

As such, the book is a wonderful resource for any substance use/drugy and alcohol providers interested in designing "natural highs" clinical curricula for clients struggling to find psychologically healthy over-the-counter self-medicating options. Let's face it: there will be people who don't like to go to doctors. Whether we call them "resistent," or Stoic, they have and will self-medicate. For some users (or, shall we say, "chemical copers"), drinking and boozing is self-psychiatry. Mayell offers a no-nonsense guide to this kind of herbal/supplemental self-management.

In my work with substance use population (in the correctional setting), I found this tome to be of great value (along with Weil's and Rosen's "Chocolate to Morphine") in designing a "natural highs" treatment curriculum for offering clients an exploration of non-addictive self-medication alternatives.

Perhaps, more valuable than the specific herbal prescriptions, is Mayell's thesis: non-addictive responsible self-medication is a possibility.
