Accessible and interesting work on DHEA
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2007-01-06
DHEA is a natural hormone that declines with age from the late 20s. Since DHEA is a precursor to the estrogens and androgens, this drop in DHEA production has an effect on the body. The author mentions various studies done on rodents as regards the impact of DHEA on longevity, which is very positive. But because such studies do not automatically hold true for humans, he concentrates on the results of human studies.

Amongst the biological indicators assessed in these studies are an increase in lean body mass, improved psychological and physical well-being, better coping with stress and increased energy levels. Sahelian interviewed top researchers in the field, who although cautious, consider DHEA supplementation to be beneficial. The hormone appears to exert remedial effects in increasing muscle strength, lean body mass and immune function.

The author discusses the various ways in which DHEA may fight and prevent cancer. For example, one study showed that the hormone boosted the power of T-cell function and disrupts the oxidizing effect of chemical carcinogens on cells. Other research suggests that it may have a wide range of salutary effects including the reduction of inflammation. Much work needs to be done, but people wishing to take DHEA should do so under the supervision of a physician.

It would also be wise to simultaneously take supplements of other anti-oxidants like selenium and various vitamins. At this stage there are no clear guidelines as to dosage but it would appear that DHEA supplementation should be considered by people over the age of 40. Because of unknown long-term effects, the author urges people to take the lowest amount and with frequent intervals.

Sahelian's writing is often witty and always clear and accessible to readers with no medical knowledge. I also recommend other books by this author, like Mind Boosters: A Guide To Natural Supplements That Enhance Your Mind, Memory And Mood, Pregnenolone, and Melatonin: Nature's Sleeping Pill.

A true solution for those ready for it
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-02-15
I have had Diabetes Type II for nearly 5 years and was finding myself
being prescribed more and more medications to control my increasingly
out-of-control blood sugar. My fasting blood sugar was never in range, no matter what I did. I didn't like the way I felt on the medications--they really didn't help that much (especially taking more insulin) and I felt increasingly tired. I was on a downward health spiral.

My New Year's resolution was to get off of the insulins and the Glucophage. Following the advice in this book--the diet and the supplements, I have been able to totally wean myself off of insulin and am halfway to being off the Glucophage. My blood sugars have never been more normal, and my fasting blood sugar is always in range now. I sleep better, have much more energy and I feel like I have come out of a mental fog.

This solution works. It's not for the lazy, nor those not willing to give up what they know they shouldn't be eating in the first place. Truthfully, I wasn't ready for this even a year ago. If you are ready, this book is a miracle gift.

Please be sure to work with your doctor on this and test, test, test your sugars all day to make sure everything is okay.

I found it to be very informational. Technical but I understand the technicality. I wouldn't recommend for those who are not serious about learning this type of healing. I do think it is a must for the serious.

A new-old paradigm for doctoring
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2003-06-02
Once in a great while someone has the insight, ability, and the courage to break down barriers. In "Doctor, Be Well; Integrating the Spirit of Healing with Scientific Medicine", Dr. David Shuch breaks through a barrier that often prevents patient's from healing, and doctors from doctoring; their relation. As a practitioner of "alternative medicine" for 20 years I am face daily with the need to help my patients shift their paradigm regarding their health. And one of the most challenging aspects of this shift is to help patients develop a balanced relation with me, their treating physician. This must occur at all levels, spiritual, emotional, mental and physical. They must learn to meet me face to face and develope an open honest trusting relation, and I must be willing to do the same with them. Dr. Shuch has provided a useful and informative road map where by both patient and doctor can meet, benefit, and heal. There is an old quote that says; "doctor heal thy self", which also means for "doctor, know thy self". Dr. Shuch offers a clear lesson plan!

As I read with delight his descriptions of healing, energy and relations, I could not decide who would benefit most by his clear and warmly written guide, patient or doctor. Truth is, both will benefit, as "Doctor, Be Well", says what all patients want to say and what most doctors have not heard, but need to hear. I highly recommend that every person who requires doctoring read this book, then....give it to your doctor as a gift.

Review Date: 1999-06-10
This is definately an excellent book on how to live a healthy life and prevent the kind of life altering diseases that affect so many people at various stages of their lives. I've read a lot of books on the subject, but this one by far is the best books on actually "preventing disease". Very comprehensive in its scope.

A solid, encompassing review of the Echinacea species
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.

This book continues to be one of my favorites after having had it for over five years. The history of Echinacea use in this country and it's transport and heavy research in Germany. Includes useful information on medicinal studies and cultivation. A great little book for the Echinacea or herbal enthusiast.
