Invaluable tool for the clinician, this book brings suggested scripts for the therapist to use as is, or to use as model for her/his own style when working with patients whose reactivity warrants emotional regulation.

As a Hypnotherapist, I use this book with other Therapists....

Review Date: 2008-06-01
This book has proven to be an excellent resource for interfacing with other Therapists who are unfamiliar with hypnosis. Many traditional counselors fail to see the relevance of hypnosis in their practice. This book is very easy to follow and provides a great set of tools for use with over-reactive clients. It can help Hypnotherapists understand how to interact with traditional counselors to improve results with their clients, as well as the therapist themself, to whom it is directed.

As Daitch explains, people who are over-reactive pay dearly for their emotional styles in the untold sacrifice of their peace of mind and the diminished satisfaction in their lives. They find it difficult to do one or more of the following:
* Make decisions using rational judgments
* Remain calm and clear in the face of stress
* Observe and reflect on their emotions and behavior
* Tolerate uncomfortable, "negative" affect or concurrent conflicting emotions
* Tolerate criticism without defensiveness
* Suspend judgment
* Soothe themselves or their partners
* Consider positive, objective interpretations of events or communications

A stress reaction is triggered very quickly. One must offer an intervention that is powerful enough for the person to gain control of inappropriate or excessive response. Simply providing insight or teaching them to reinterpret triggers alone is often insufficient. One must consider diffusing the stress response first before a change in reaction is possible.

Immediate benefits of Hypnotherapy to clients include:

* Stop escalation of conflict with others
* Have tolerance when experiencing difficult emotions
* Handle a juxtaposition of different emotions
* Remain calm and flexible within stressful situations

Long term benefits to clients include:

* More resiliency in the face of long-term stress/conflict
* Significant reduction in symptoms of stress disorders
* Increased maturity and spiritual development
* Greater receptivity to the wisdom of others
* Increased trust and connection with others and self
* A healthier sense of self (self-esteem, productive perspective)
* Elevated positive affect

By working with a Hypnotherapist, a variety of quick and easy to learn techniques can be learned that help clients maintain, in their daily lives, the dramatic emotional shifts they experience in the therapists office.

"Affect Regulation Toolbox" by Carolyn Daitch PhD
March 1, 2007 (ISBN 10:0-393-70495-5)
Review by Dr. Sandra E. S. Neil

As Claire Frederick M.D., says in her foreward to Dr. Carolyn Daitch's book" `Affect Regulation Toolbox' is a clinical classic". It seems appropriate to comment that these affect regulation skills are used as part of hypnotherapy by Dr. Daitch in her own practice. However, as presented by Dr. Daitch at the International Council of Psychologists workshop in Kos, Greece in July 2006, these skills can also stand in their own right, and could easily be used in non-hypnotic therapies.

The book comprises a collection of therapeutic interventions, consisting of four components, or as Dr. Daitch calls them "Tiers". Tier 1 is recognition of an overreaction, and initiation of a brief pause to interrupt it. Tier 2 is standard hypnotic induction and deepening techniques. Tier 3 is a set of tools aimed at shifting unhealthy reactive styles. Tier 4 comprises tools to address therapeutic transfer of suggestion and practice.

Dr. Daitch describes symptoms of anxiety disorders including the following: uncontrollable worry, panic attacks, poor concentration, addictive behaviours, obsessive thoughts and phobias (page 25). Further, she describes anxiety in relationships; she sees overly reactive behaviours to be at the core of many troubled relationships. These typically include: escalation and conflict, disconnection from each other emotionally, inability to access positive affect and inability to practise beneficial therapeutic behaviours. This augurs poorly for the future of the relationship when two people experience such negative states every time they enter a conflict situation.

In Chapters 4-6, Dr. Daitch looks at ways of diminishing over-reactivity, by using a set of skills, and I recommend the reader read these themselves (page 28). It makes excellent reading and excellent clinical practice.
1. Identifying the start of an overreaction and responding appropriately,
2. Calming and focussing.
3. Mindfulness.
4. Somatic awareness and cues.
5. Impulse control.
6. Co-existing affective states.
7. Resource utilisation.
8. Positive affect development.

Dr. Daitch says that it is the mastery of these skills, in the midst of stress and conflict, that will truly enable patients to experience freedom from the heightened emotions and reactions that keep them trapped for so long.

In Chapter 9, "Application of Tools with Severe Anxiety Disorders", Dr. Daitch uses tools from Tiers 1 and 2, before using tools from Tier 3 to address a Panic Disorder. Further the patient is given strategies from Tier 4 that she can implement in her daily life. These include tight fist, mindfulness with detached observation, mindfulness and releasing, sensory cue/anchor, age progression short-term and long-term, imaginary support circle and parts of yourself (very reminiscent of Virginia Satir's Parts Party).

In Chapter 10, Dr. Daitch applies these rules within a marital, committed relationship. These include Gottman's description of the "Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse" as applied to couples - the four main destructive behaviours which are often evident in failing marriages: criticism, defensiveness, contempt, and stonewalling (Page 186).

Dr. Daitch's gives an example of a couple at marital war with each other, Jonathon and Janice, who attend for therapy. Dr. Daitch lays out her treatment goals as follows:
* Diminish defensiveness by each taking responsibility and owning their parts in conflict
* Practise active listening or mirroring
* Validate and empathize
* Practise using visualisation to rehearse effective communication
* Help the couple learn from each other's adaptive style
* Contain verbally damaging exchanges
* Increase empathy
* Close `exits' (that is, activities which are designed with the express purpose of avoiding each other)
* Establish `date nights' away from the children
* Develop positive expectations about the relationship and experience regular positive affect
* Increase the awareness of the impact of verbal and nonverbal communication

The tools which she used for Jonathon and Janice were `Arm and Leg Heaviness', and `Parts of the Self'.

Chapter 12 is called "Roadblocks and Challenges". The most significant challenge to a therapist's successful implementation of the Toolbox is getting the patients to practise. She also talks about working with those who have low hypnotisability, managing resistance from different perspectives, and matching tools with client needs and styles.

In the epilogue, in which she focuses on the therapist, she describes how we have to learn to trust our own voice and style. She emphasizes the importance of self-care and self-acceptance for the therapist. Daitch quotes Louise Hay, stating that the most important thing the therapist can do for their patients is to love themselves, and stop self-criticism.

After 36 years of clinical practice myself, I believe that Dr. Daitch's therapeutic tools are very useful, and I have used variations of them in different ways and in different situations throughout my own career. "Affect Regulation Toolbox" is an invaluable resource, allowing patients to maintain a healthy response to stress, and facilitate effective clinical work for a happier life. Dr. Carolyn Daitch has done a service to the whole field of psychotherapy.

A Must have for every Hypnotherapist

As the director of The Denver School Of Hypnotherapy, I am always looking for really good books on hypnosis/therapy to use as a textbook or to put on our recommended reading list, and this book fills both needs. About 1/3 of the way into the book, I had decided to use it as one of our main textbooks, replacing one we have used since the school opened. Ms Daitchs' professional easy to read style of writing makes this book a must for any psychotherapist who wants to expand his/her practice and offer the best support possible to clients. When Ms Daitch states, "For clinicians who are discouraged with unsuccessful traditional psychotherapeutic methods and want to be able to offer their over-reactive clients explicit strategies with long-term results, Affect Regulation Toolbox is an invaluable resource..." I couldn't agree with her more. This book gets two thumbs up and 5 stars from me

Practical Tool for Clinicians
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-04
This is a practical book that both seasoned and newly trained clinicians will love. Written by a highly experienced therapist, it fills a void that has existed in therapy literature on the topic methods for helping patients with affect regulation issues.

Dr. Daitch has compiled more than 30 specific self-regulatory skill sets. She describes them for the therapist along with the indications for their use, and then models the practical language in the form of a script. Therapists are not going to get bogged down in this book, but will be able to easily and rapidly begin using what they read. The techniques are specifically tailored for use with over-reactive types of patients-the population where traditional talk therapy commonly proves frustrating and inadequate. The methods are applicable to either individual or couples therapy.

A valuable table at the beginning of the book recommends which of the techniques may be most applicable in the treatment of conditions such as generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, PTSD, and phobias. The table also guides the clinician to the most appropriate techniques for reducing various symptoms such as worry and rumination, counterproductive thoughts, self-criticism, hopelessness, fear of the future, irritability, insomnia, somatic distress, hypervigilence withdrawal, codependency, and feelings of abandonment. The practitioner is also directed to which techniques are most applicable for the enhancement of resiliency, self-efficacy and self-esteem, self-soothing, skill rehearsal, impulse control, positive affect, empathy, positive expectancy, detached observation, emotional connection, and mental flexibility.

The author begins by assisting other therapists to understand over-reactivity and then provides a scholarly overview chapter on the psychophysiology of emotional reactivity. The remainder of the book is very pragmatic. One chapter focuses on helping clients identify the start of an over-reaction and how to respond appropriately. Another chapter is on focusing attention and calming strategies. Still other chapters concentrate on healing strategies, behavioral and practice session rehearsal, tools for common anxiety disorders, tools for severe anxiety disorders, tools for use in relationship therapy, and tools for use in parent/child, sibling, work, and friendship relationships.

As each technique is introduced the author lists the 4-5 goals of the method. The practical wording of a script is then modeled for the reader, followed by a commentary and sometimes an example. Thus the book provides the therapist with techniques that he or she can begin to immediately use in treatment, providing the patient with new, practical skills for affect regulation which they may then be assigned as home work. A final chapter assists the reader in handling roadblocks and challenges (e.g., noncompliance with practice sessions and resistance).

Although many of the techniques have their origin in hypnosis and cognitive behavior therapy, a high level of sophistication in either of these approaches is not essential to finding the book useful clinically. An appendix provides therapists with further useful resources, including videotapes, books and sources of training, as well as resources for clients (workbooks, CD's). I highly recommend this book.

Too complex for me! Especially with three kids a job a husband pets and god knows what else. I do believe in his theory, though, and I'm certain it works. Maybe when my last baby goes to college I'll give it a try.

At last, a palatable diet that's easy to stick to!

Wish I'd read this book before moving to Seattle, one of the darkest cities in North America, and living there for 17 years! Each year when the rains started and lasted for months and months, I'd typically gain 15-25 pounds. If the sun came out long enough in the summer, I'd sometimes lose most of my winter weight. When the sun was out, diet was easy. When the sun was not shining, I could not stop eating. I arrived in Seattle weighing a petite 103 pounds and wearing a size 5 and left Seattle barely able to sqeeze into a size 14-16.

Now I've moved to a sunny state and have quite a few pounds to lose. The high-carb, low-fat diets left me hungry all the time. The low-carb diets left me feeling depressed. The carbohydrate addicts diet was too restrictive, no carbs except at one meal per day. On the Circadian diet, I don't feel an overwhelming urge to eat all the time. In fact, last night, after a very small dinner, I felt more full than I usually do after a very large meal. The diet is palatable, too. While protein is emphasized during the day, a little bit of carbohydrate is allowed, and it makes the meals a lot more appetizing. So, I can have a few chunks of pineapple with my cup of cottage cheese when I'm in a hurry and have to prepare a quickie lunch. Or I can have a piece of high fiber bread with my omlette at breakfast. And I can have some protein with my carbs at dinner. Eating out is easy. After failing at high-carb, low-carb, Weight Watchers, Diet Center, et cetera, I finally have a satisfying way to eat and am losing weight. In fact, I easily lost three pounds my first week on the diet. I learned a lot of useful information from other diet books but could not stick to the diets. After reading The Circadian Prescription, I find losing weight is pretty easy! With the other suggestions in the book, I overall feel much better than I have in years!

I had dimly begun to suspect the reasoning myself - advertising bombards us with "Carbohydrates Are For Energy", but they always seem to put me to sleep during the day when I need to think clearly. Peeking inside, Dr. Baker says effectively 'duh you idiot that's right save the carbos for dinner'. Liking this reinforcement of personal intuition, I immediately bought the book !

"Protein-in-day, carbs-at-night" is of course not patentable, but it seems to work, and the details are worth $1.00, plus which it is fairly information-dense, not one of those padded tomes.

This book is a literally a lifesaver! For years I have struggled to stay awake, alert and function with ADD, Candida and other health problems....the diet that is recommeneded allows me to feel alert when I need to be alert and relaxed when necessary by eating differently at different times of the day,and not be famished and weak with hunger in-between. This concept is radically different from anything else that I've ever read..but it works! I've always assumed that somehow each individual was so unique that we needed different diets ....this is a diet that seems to work for everybody, regardless or age, sex, health or lack of it...The breakfast shake in particular is a gem..and can even be used for lunch if needed..it gives me lots of energy and carries me to lunch without the usual mid-morning hunger that usually plagues me.
I have even introduced a friend to the concept and she was blown away too. Thank you Dr. MacDonald, from the bottom of my heart.

As someone with an interest in healing through natural or spiritual means, I wasn't sure what to expect from Ted's book. What I found was a lot of corresponding and pertinent information that reinforce's what I have been previously told. This little book goes directly and simply to the energy centers and gives basic explanations as to the effects various colors have on the body. It's a good read for someone just beginning to delve into color energies, but also for those who are more enhanced. I have no trouble recommending it for your library. I tried using one of the plant energy experiments on a dead Dogwood tree in our front yard that was killed by lightning over twenty years ago and within four weeks of using the twenty minutes worth of Reiki energy on the dead tree stump, there appeared four new sprouts right beside the stump that were little Dogwood trees.

In the back of the book there is a personal journal for a month worth of your energy healing and journal to learn if you are actually living in the moment being aware and grounded or spending the majority of your day zoned out on other things like daydreaming/ worry Etc...

While this book seems largely unknown in the Reiki community, it is a most wonderful resource. It really does help understand the process of living in the moment and feeling the energetic effects of simply being.

The author describes the journey that this book represents not as being a "how-to" guide for Reiki, but as a "why-to." Narrin truly feels that Reiki cannot be adequately described, and therefore she leaves that to the reader to find their own Reiki experience. Thus, the book is left to be a journey into understanding the tangible, real-life benefits of approaching life holistically and with intention.

I strongly reccomend this book to everyone, not just Reiki practitioners. It will honestly enrich our human experience. Jus the author's personal story related in the book is wonderful, and it is so nice to see a Reiki book that isn't regurgitating the same information as every other.

The exercises are interesting and unique to most Reiki books. Her descriptions make the practice of Reiki easy to understand and the drawings are helpful. The storys add interest and give a refreshing perspective. Certainly a lot of thought has been given to the creation of this very useful Reiki book.

If you're just starting to explore this arena, and you need guided imagery, this is an excellent c.d. Headphones are recommended and I would say they are a "must". Why? Because the full benefit of the c.d. is very diminished without them. This is a finely crafted, well executed and technically balanced production.

Why only 4 stars then? I find the opening music and his accent irritating - but - you overcome those factors by focusing on what you purchased the c.d. for, and if you don't, then you are missing the point of buying it.

I listen to this CD almost nightly. So far, I've had many visions where I see very clear, video-like scenes play out in front of me while I have my eyes closed. One scene, I saw an old town with one fast moving person and the view narrowing on that individual. Another one I saw three moving viking like ships swaying side to side. I believe my third eye has opened. Another time I had an out of body experience that lasted the duration of the second track. I floated to the top of the ceiling then floated down beyond my body. I opened my eyes and saw a room full of electric guitars and folding chairs. I meandered around the room and ended up in another place with Egyptian hieropglyphics and drawings on two walls and on the ceiling. I heard the CD counting down and I returned to my physical body.

Fantastic!

This is the first CD I have tried by Glenn Harold. I had tried another CD by someone else and it was ok, but not as relaxing as I wanted. This one blows me away! This is not even his Sleep CD and I usually don't make it past the first chakra! Which is something for me because it usually takes me forever to fall asleep and I don't sleep well during the day (I work 12hr night shifts in a hospital) I sleep so much better even in a short amount of time. The more I listen to it (in my sleep) the more I feel its affects. The other day when it got to the end of the session and he was slowly waking you up with visualizations, I was still asleep but lighter and I actually started seeing the objects he was talking about with my eyes closed in vibrant colors which is not usual for me. I felt wonderful when I woke up. I never really had much faith that hypnotherapy worked until now. I can't wait to try more of his CD's and to tell my friends!

Oh and for those worried about wrapping the headphone cable around your neck, try securing it loosely above your head. As for me, I usually toss and turn and tear the bed up when I sleep. Not any more, I'm so relaxed I don't move at all!

This author is The Matriarch of Herbalism among the inner
circle, which includes well known practicing herbalists,
"celebrity" herbalists, other authors, and many thousands
of community herbalists all over the world.
My 30 year old copy- my very first herb book -
is falling apart so I just ordered another because it
contains a lifetime of tried and true herbal information
for personal and professional practice. Anyone starting
out in their understanding of this field, as well as
anyone who has been studying for years, should have this,
and all her books, on their shelves, and use them! If
you do, you will "get it".

This book is recommended to educate and enlighten those
who have been brainwashed by the media to think "herbs
are drugs", or poisons, or worse- as it clears up issues
of practical usage, and proper usage, and everyday
applications, by someone with decades of experience ,
well respected the world over. It contains useful, full
descriptions of many common herbs (the "materia medica"),
some not so common, some , in older versions, which may
have fallen out of use or access. A story emerges of herbal
use all over the planet for health care, and along with
this information, the author shares her insights into
incorporating natural living to promote robust health
and vitality.

No fads here- just classical, timeless, tried and true,
unchanging , eternally helpful enlightenment.

Some people might question starting off as a novice with an herbal written primarily from a European perspective. When I was recommended this book, I was somewhat skeptical of what I might learn. I was a bit disappointed at first, because some of the herbs I found weren't even native to my continent.

However, over time, I have grown to love this book, as well as the author. The reason this book is so great isn't just the information about the herbs - there is similar information in many places. The book is great because as you read it, you begin to FEEL the herbs. You begin to gain a sense of what true herbalism is.

In our Western culture, we often think of herbal medicine in the same way we think of modern medicine. When you are sick, you take something. It goes away. You are now well. The end. This book counters that attitude - subtly, yet in a very profound way. This book encourages the reader to think of HEALTH, not just healing. To pursue an ongoing relationship with the plants of the earth - not just a one time quick fix for what ails you (although there is plenty of that information as well.)

If you are like me, and NEW to the entire concept of herbal healing - do yourself a favor and purchase this book. There are more comprehensive books out there about specific herbs - especially North American ones - but if you TRULY want to gain the proper perspective about herbs and your health, this book is priceless.

I also recommend books by Susun Weed. Her writings are similar in keeping in tune with the SPIRIT of herbalism, not just facts about individual herbs.

One must first note this herbal was first published in the U.K. You gotta love the older herbals written before the over-inflated danger warnings, suppressions of the medical society and fears of legal action. Yes, herbs are medicine, but also food. With a little guidance and a lot of common sense & caution, herb use can safely serve many. Lots of great info on 200+ herbs with a simplistic approach to use, charms the reader to say "Encore"! Suffice to say, "I'm a pleased purchaser".

I LOVED this book. It provides a fascinating inside look into the unconscious mind and the power of hypnosis and counseling. Even if you have no interest in hypnosis per se, this is a great study of human nature and relationships.
