A useful field book.

Not the best field-guide ever, but a very competent, useful, well-compiled book overall. Drawings are useful, though could use more detail or photos in some cases. Descriptions are useful in identification.

The shining point of this book is in the details after the plant information. Uses, both local and western are given with information that would point you in the direction of further inquiries. Common and binomial names are given, making it even more useful for cross-referencing these plants.

An excellent ethnobotanic book.

Being a student of rainforest medicinal plants myself, I found this book one of the best, published or unpublished, to-date. The drawings are excellent, making field identification easy. The presentation of both the common and scientific names of plants is invaluable. I found it interesting that the Carribean people of Belize and the Carribean people of Costa Rica (where I am) use the same names and uses for many of the medicinal plants. This book is a wealth of information for such a small price, not to mention, motivation for further inquiry. Thank You!

An excellent guide for preparing for surgery and the healing process after the event. I read it as part of my pre-surgery prep and incorporated many of the things in the book as well as applying things recommended post-surgically; I am convinced it was invaluable as an aid to my quick recovery. I would suggest this be mandatory reading for anyone having any type of surgery!

Kathleen Wren and Carol Norred have produced a lovely, clear, easy to use survey of a helpful range of CAM therapies. It is organized by pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic therapies, with concise explanations of the modality, indications, side effects, precautions, indications, contraindications, and key words to remember. Winsome and humorous cartoon figures counterpoint the reading. A review section presents a playful series of crossword puzzles and other word exercises that will help readers assess and firm up their knowledge about each therapy.

This is an excellent book for anyone wanting an introduction to CAM.

Ample references for further reading provide doorways for delving deeper.

Best Reiki Book Ever!
Helpful Votes: 29 out of 29 total.
Review Date: 2003-10-28
This is the Reiki book you've been waiting for! It is really comprehensive, well written, easy to understand, and useful for anyone with an interest in Reiki, from beginners right up to Reiki Masters. It gives a good grounding in energy theory and the metaphysical causes of illness, plenty of basic information about how Reiki was discovered, how it has developed in the West and in Japan, and what the training involves at each level. However, its main strength is the way it explains how to use Reiki at each level, including all the hand positions and lots of advanced Second Degree techniques you won't find in any other book, plus creative uses for Reiki like enhancing your psychic ability and healing past lives. It includes some vital information about the need for energy cleansing and protection, plus many additional techniques from the Reiki traditions in Japan. Added to that, it emphasises the importance of spiritual development with Reiki, suggests how to manage Reiki sessions and set up as a professional Practitioner, advises on how to become a Reiki Master, and gives brief details of 28 different Reiki systems! It's an easy read, but an amazing resource that you'll want to go back to again and again - definitely the best Reiki book ever!

Penelope Quest's book is a very in depth and insightful book for anyone interested in not only learning about Reiki, but for those teachers that are interested in using an additional text to their own materials. I use this book with students both in person and distance. All have found it very helpful in explaining the concepts as well as the actual practice of Reiki. I would highly recommend this book!!

Light and Blessings to all!!

Whatever questions you have about Reiki will be answered in this book. Suitable for the merely curious or the Reiki practitioner, and set out in an easy to use question and answer format. Especially good for someone who needs help to "explain" Reiki to others, and also full of handy tips for those practicing or hoping to use Reiki as part of a complementary therapy business.

I found this to be a loving and thorough guide to help people after they are attuned to the Reiki energy, and also for those who are thinking of getting more involved with this beautiful energy. The format with it's appropriate pictures placed throughout the book and the well planned and comprehensive chapters make this a wonderful how-to for the budding Reiki Professional.

The book is filled with down to earth advice and plain talk about how to set up your business, how to interest clients, what to say to a potential client, how to set up a space for Reiki Treatments, and even loving info on how to do a Reiki session.

I feel this is a truly inspired labor of love, and that the author left no stone un turned in bringing us this enlightened helper. It has found it's way to my spiritual tool box, and I expect it may make it's way to yours also.

One of the best books on Reiki. It is packed with useful information and is very enjoyable to read. I loved it and gave three copies to friends who have just taken Reiki. They have found it very helpful. It shows you creative ways to use Reiki, combine it with other therapies and get the most out of it. The authors write in a lively informative style. They clearly have a passion for Reiki and can inspire others to improve their lives through its practice.

A terrific Reiki guide with the best picture of Dr. Usui

Review Date: 2005-07-02
The information in this book is absolutely fantastic. It has 14 chapters which cover: 1) What is Reiki?, 2) The History of the Usui System of Reiki, 3) How Reiki differs from other healing methods, 4) Reiki for personal healing, 5) Reiki Treatments, 6) Combining Reiki with other methods of healing, 7) Other ways of using Reiki, 8) Reiki with chronic illness, 9) Reiki for self-development and spiritual growth, 10) The First Degree class, 11) The Second Degree class, 12) The Third Degree or Master's Training, 13) How to find a Reiki Master 14) Becoming a Reiki Practitioner.

My favorite parts of this book is the best quality and largest photo of Dr. Usui which gives true meaning to the saying "A picture is worth a thousand words." The section about when not to use Reiki (don't give after a pre-operative anaesthetic has been administered or during an operation. And much more info I'll need to know as a nurse.) Also, I learned "If a person is suffering from a particularly severe complaint, it might be wiser to avoid the problem area completely for the time being, allowing the energy to flow through from the other areas and reabalance the system in that way." Unfortunately I learned this after the fact of touching the upper arm of my pastor who had rotator cuff surgery. I had to stop because he was so tense me getting anywhere near his shoulder. Also I should have asked first if I could do Reiki which I also learned in this book. There is just a world of information inside! My very favorite part I will write out as it is only a paragraph on page 72 but I've used it and it is so powerful I can hardly believe it!

"Using Reiki to Balance the Chakras: Sitting in a chair, place one hand on the forehead and one on the back of the neck. Then place both hands on the shoulders. After this, place one hand on the chest and one on the back. Next, place one hand on the solar plexus and one hand on the corresponding position on the back. Finally place one hand on the abdomen and one hand on the tailbone. This short treatment will balance the chakras effectively."

Note: I did this exercise [above] as a first level healer and it worked just as strong as where I am now at second level! It really works! Try it after having/viewing an attunement. A good attunement dvd I recommend is the Reiki: First level attunement by Steve Murray offered here at Amazon. o8E

One can find many books about Reiki and feel that the writer does not know deeply what he or she is talking about. But Walter Lubeck is not only a writer and does not write to sell books... He is a Reiki Master! All Reiki Masters should read his books.

Here's a comment from the authors of Relieving Pain Naturally, Sylvia Goldfarb, PhD, and Roberta W. Waddell:

"Although we strongly believe in the efficacy of alternative therapies, we consistently urge caution with selected alternative remedies, and we do not believe that all alternative remedies are automatically good, while all conventional treatments are automatically dangerous, as the Publisher's Weekly review implies."

I found this practical guidebook to pain relief a valuable resource. The organization of the book provides easy access for researching a variety of conditions which are the common culprits in causing pain which can be incapacitating in various degrees. The explanations of various treatments for these conditions are clear and well-written, and include sections on "how the treatment is used," cautions to be observed in selecting any particular treatment, and clinical studies done to measure effectiveness of each treatment. There are references to help the reader get additional information about specific or general conditions and treatments as well as listings of organizations and websites. The typeset was large enough to be seen without eye strain, and the print facilitated my ability to find the portions and chapters which were of interest. All in all, this book proved useful to me in the process of seeking relief from back pain, and I would highly recommend it to other readers.

THIS IS A WONDERFUL BOOK - I COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN. I'M CURRENTLY READING IT FOR THE SECOND TIME. IT'S A VERY QUICK READ. THIS BOOK IS GREAT FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO WANT A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF ROLFING - OR ARE EVEN CURIOS ABOUT IDA HERSELF. IT SEEMS AS THOUGH IDA ROLF'S PERSONALITY REALLY SHINES THROUGH IN THIS BOOK. I FOUND IT TO BE VERY "LIGHT" AND "FUN" TO READ - AND ALSO VERY ENLIGHTENING.

It's All About the Attitude

"If there is one thing a Rolfer must remember," says Ida Rolf, "is to keep in mind that Rolfing is based on the theory of gravity." This is essentially the underpinnings of the attitude the Rolfer should consider when approaching a potential client. This book which is an amalgam of the wit and witticisms of Ida Rolf more or less defines the attitude of the Rolfer, the mind-set in which one is to take as a form of preparation. Rolfing is not a therapy, nor is it out to cure any ailments, disease or otherwise - it is aimed at elevating ones health for maximum mobility. The body is desgined to move, however, there are obstrctions that we are not always entirely aware of. Although gravity is constantly at play with us every day, we do not take into account the effects of gravity on the body. In Ida's understanding, gravity means structure, which also means relationships. Not just relation of the muscles to eachother and to the bones, but the body to the earth, the body with gravity. What is that relationship? The feet has to move along with with earth, to feel the ground, rather than resist or flatten as if it were a land mover itself. Gravity can be worked 'with' rather than against, which is the whole intention of Rolfing. This book is an easy read, however, because it is thought provoking to the person who is interested in Rolfing, you may want to enjoy some of Ida's brilliance and knowledge in her work. 'Rolfing and Physical Reality' is a good companion to her major work 'Rolfing' which explains the anatomical aspects of the body that has been shifted and unset. While the latter works as a presentation for the appreciation and observations for the Rolfer, this book acts as the thread for the Rolfers mind. I reccomend one with the other and should be read in tandem.
