Chaitow's testing and treatment methods are presented clearly and with instructions which make this manual suitable for in-home use. The text gives the rationale for the exercises and contains abundant explanatory photographs and illustrations. The information, while presented in a user-friendly, manner is technical enough for use by the health care professional. This is a valuable resource for any self-care or professional health care library.

This book is not only informative, but has great teaching aids in it. There are several laminated pages in the back of the book with several stretches and muscle energy techniques to increase flexibility and range of motion in several diferent body areas.
Dr. Chaitow has even graciously printed 'ok to copy' on these self help pages.

I found this to be one of the best high-velocity textbooks. The CD and step by step directions make this a great deal!

Simply the best on the market of its kind!

Review Date: 2004-08-19
This book is as good as the current scientific literature allows it to be, and is by far the best on the market of its kind at present!

What is most refreshing about this book is that the authors have not hidden away in the world of anecdote and hearsay, all to often seen in competing texts, and have embraced an approach informed by research evidence (where available) to the teaching of a subject that has been used for many years by a wide range of health professionals. Whilst the authors make it clear that they are osteopaths and their clinical background has informed their approach, their use of scientifically sound and generic terminology and concepts allows their work to be accessible and understood by readers from any discipline.

A masterstroke by the authors is their categorisation of manipulative techniques by the target joint in which synovial fluid cavitation is desired. Never mind the opinions of authors of less informed books about the relevance of joint cavitation. The scientific literature clearly shows that cavitation is what distinguishes high velocity-low amplitude thrust (HVLAT) manipulation from other interventions grouped under the generic 'spinal manipulative therapy' banner. These authors have taken a brave step in categorising techniques in this manner, adding clarity to a subject that is all too often obfuscated by wishy-washy opinion and an avoidance of robust empirical data.

By the same token, it is nice to see that the authors have emphasised the importance of spinal segmental kinematics in relation to the various phases of HVLAT manipulation. These important concepts are then used to aid explanation of each technique throughout the text in a consistent and logical manner.

The techniques included cover all regions of the spine, and represent an ample repertoire for any manipulative practitioner. The techniques are logically organised by anatomical region, are clearly illustrated, and a clear description of each phase of the technique is given in the text. The text is then complemented by videos of each technique on the accompanying CD-ROM, which is an extremely useful learning (and teaching) aid. It is worth bearing in mind that videos of manual therapy techniques have traditionally been very expensive, but this addition really makes this book good value when compared with the alternatives on the market.

What more can you ask for?

This review book is awesome. The CD with sample tests gives you a good idea of the difficulty level of the National exam. I also liked how the author provided explainations with the answer to a question; not just why an answer was right but also why the others were wrong. I also bought the red study guide with the really long title (The Ultimate Study Guide For blah blah blah blah) but didn't even use it. In addition to the practice tests on the CD, I read the massage therapy book by Susan G. Salvo from front to back and passed my exam the first time. Well worth the investment!

Fantastic book to review for NCETMB!!!!!

This book is so great! If you are gearing up to take the NCETMB, this is a invaluable resource. It reviews over all the body systems, so it is a great refresher. At the end of the chapters are the practice exams. What I love about this book is they don't just list the answer, they explain why it is the answer, and why the others are not. This makes so much sense, and helps when you are stumped. Also included is a CD ROM that has tons more questions. I highly recommend this book for anyone getting ready for the NCETMB.

This is without question one of my favorite wellness books ever. If you want to apply state of the art research to your health and nutrition, this is the book for you. Dr. Silverstein writes in a concise style...he gets to the point and tells you exactly how to make lifestyle changes. It will be a required text for my students in our college class: Nutrition 101. An important and timely book.

A book you want your love ones to read too!

I have oodles of natural health books that I use to guide me in the natural healing of my own family but this is the first book I have ever gone out and bought multiple copies of to give to those whom are dearest to me. This book is so easy to read and understand that you feel empowered by the knowledge you gain; the knowledge of ways to improve your health with a goal of a more natural longevity. It focuses on eating a healthier diet but it tells you why and how it affects your body. My teenage son picked it up and got excited about it. A dear friend I lent one of my extra copies to, wants her husband to read it. It is a book to share with those in your life you care about. I thank the doctor for writing it and hope more traditional doctors read it and employ some of its natural advise in their medical practices. Medical schools should have it as mandatory reading and every library should have one(I'm buying a copy for the one I work in!)

Timely, Well-Researched, Comprehensive, East to Read

This timely new book covers all the aspects of Menopause, sometimes written as separate topics in other books. Dr. Schoenbeck, Dr. Gibson and the other contributers have written a book; of women - by women - for women, based on their experience practicing medicine, published research and listening to their patients. At 332 pages, the book is quite comprehensive. Not only does it address specific issues such as Hormone Replacement Therapy, the book appropriately looks at the surrounding physical, emotional, cultural and psychological aspects of this natural process.

The authors emphasize that each woman is an individual. therefore, interwoven throughout the book is the empowering message for women to actively listen to their bodies, read and keep knowlegable on Menopause; and thus be in control, throughout the medical decision-making process.

Importantly, the title: "Monopause: Bridging the Gap Between Natural and Conventional Medicine", is at the heart of the message. The book talks about and gives examples of how women are working with both conventional and Naturopathic physicians to meet their individual health needs. The authors show how this is partnership is not only working, but may provide the best range of options for your particular health issues.

This book is recommended because it is not a one-time read, but will become a good reference book. Whether one needs information on bone health, herbs, perimenopause, the changing body, etc., the book will be there when you have a question.

In an age where books on this topic may be written in a week in order to be marketed to take advantage of recent headlines (such as Hormone Replacement Therapy), this well-researched book which was over 3 years in the making, will be around long after other books shelf life has expired.

A time of major transition always goes more easily if one is prepared with knowledge and support. This book offers both in very strong doses, from the cellular to the cosmic levels. Many issues surrounding menopause are analyzed and clarified in light of the authors' experiences treating patients with a balanced, blend of conventional and alternative medicine. I will be ordering a few more copies to give to friends. Can't bear to part with my own copy.

Had no idea when I ordered this book from Amazon that it would be both informative and inspirational. The background on a host of touch therapies enriched me; the real stories of healing, using hands-on touch enlightened me. A must read for anyone who wants to know more about alternative therapies and how to incorporate these in your lifestyle for health and healing.

This guide is superb! I picked it up because I wanted to know more about massage and acupuncture for pain relief. I was so surprised as the guide not only gave me the history and factual information on MANY touch therapies, it also detailed many patient stories of healing using touch. It was uplifting!! So often alternative therapy books are negative in tone. But this book was magical--it empowered me to feel like a touch therapy could actually help my back pain and gave me the confidence to try one. A great read for any age and very fresh and genuine in tone. Especially helpful--the chapter on managed care and how to get your HMO to pay for the therapy.

The text "Mobilisation of the Nervous System" is an excellent text for both the novice and experienced Physical Therapist. I bought this book to review for the Orthopedic Clinical Specialist exam, and have found it very helpful. The text does an excellent job of describing general anatomical and physiological reasoning behind commonly used evaluation and treatment techniques, as well as describing these techniques in detail. The illustrations and descriptions are good, so that if you are not practiced at these techniques you will be able to clearly see the proper postioning that is required. I would recommend this text for anyone who wants to update their clincal skills or for new Physical Therapists that want to learn more about this aspect of Physical Therapy.

Challenging but hugely beneficial information
Helpful Votes: 30 out of 30 total.
Review Date: 1999-06-21
This book is the English translation of the hugely popular German book "Aus eigener Kraft".

For the 'modern' western mind, the subject of lunar influence on our lives may sound esoteric and far-fetched, but once you start applying some of Johanna's and Thomas' advice, you will realize its relevance and practical application.

Moon Time explains to you in simple terms who the lunar cycles influence our lives, and how we can use them to live a healthier and more harmonious life - which is also a lot cheaper than maintaining the one we currently live.

It explains each sign, its significance as part of the lunar cycle, and what it means to you in your daily life. It also touches briefly on other subjects and has a chapter dedicated to builiding in harmony with nature.

It's a superb read, but also look out for the translation of the book "Zum richtigen Zeitpunkt" ("At the right time"), which has even more practical examples.

AN ABSOLUTE MUST READ

Moving Medicine: Delightful Book for All in Healing Arts

Review Date: 2000-04-05
This book is very enjoyable to read. I found myself enthralled by this odd, athletic man who fairly stumbled into a profound understanding of the mind-body connection. His life-long struggle to bring his discovery to the light of day gives this book a dramatic edge. Milton Traeger started out as an acrobat and a boxer. While working at the post office, he took the advice of an employee notice: "Take a deep breath". The book continues: "Finding himself alone, he lowered his mailbag, paused and breathed. Many years later, he would say:"That was the beginning of me."' It's a great beginning of a great story.

I am an acupuncturist who has never had Traeger work, but I recognize key principles from Chinese medicine in what Traeger does and teaches. It is also similar to Chinese medicine in that most of the 'learning' cannot come from theories, it comes through the teacher. It's no wonder that his efforts to teach what he knew in his hands took him to such far away places.

I enjoyed this book so much that I deliberately read only a chapter at a time to savor it.

I recommend it to anyone, health care practitioner or not. I think it should be on the 'must read' list at massage schools. I wish my doctor would read it too. I hope you buy it.
